The Departed  (2006)

You guys!  You guys!  You guys! I've just seen the most amazing move!  It's called The Departed, and I'm telling you, it's almost as cool as Snatch!

I never thought that a seasoned vetran like Martin Scorsese would follow the trend and make a movie that is all plot and says absoutley nothing, but whatdaya know?  I was wrong.

Since the whole movie is about plot and coincidence, I will (and maybe cannot) reveal much of the plot here.  But the central Earth-shattering premise revolves around Leonard DiCaprio as an undercover policeman trying to infiltrate Jack Nicholson's crime orginzation.  Unbeknowst to him, Nicholson has placed a mole of his own in the police department (Matt Damon) and the rest of the film consists of a cat-and-mouse game the two plays as they try to figure out who they are.

Probably the best thing that I can say about the movie is that it's two hours long and never boring, and is generally well acted, even though Leo still seems fake at times.  But what is the point of this movie? After watching for over two hours and seeing some of the filthiest langauge I've ever seen in a movie, we are left with absolutley nothing of value.

Watching the film, I came up with another potential exploration as to why Scorsese is overrated- perhaps film critics are older versions of white suberban teenagers who listen to gangsta rap.  Movies like this could be their way of feeling gritty and non-elite.  Whatever.  The Departed is interesting while watching it, but anyone who says that "Heaven has come to movie goers", or compares this to Taxi Driver and Raging Bull hasn't seen enough movies, or is on drugs.
