  • 15.gif Wire, The - Complete Second Season (5 discs)
    Close this panel
    Starring: Dominic West,  Wendell Pierce
The slow-pace ,( that some saw as a virtue) is gone, the acting seems tighter...things seem to have been boiled down a bit..character and story threads are embedded from season one of course, and pay off ,big-time...there seems to be more humour ...
When you hear Tom Waits (singing his own song ) on the theme tune
you realise that this, the second series, just clicked things up a notch...

  • Great T.V. H.B.O. is as good as the BBC

    Mona Lisa Smile  (2003)

    300  (2007)

    28 Weeks Later  (2007)

I see that every episode seems to be listed individually here, but, this is my review for the first season of "The Wire"..it was recommended to me by an American podcaster,Michael Vox.

I have watched it all on DVD..Season five (the last season) is just starting in the U.S.Season 4 on DVD is on my shopping list for this week.

A Slow slow , burner ...at first you think, how on earth am i going to follow this ?, all these characters, the judicial and police jargon , and the impenetrable patios, that," well , you ain't maybe never gonna get with that program Iiieeeeat?"...('alright') ,the long slow  story arc really pays off...
There are some flaws, the acting quality is a little patchy, but the sum of the parts overcomes that .. i listened to a smidge of the writer's commentary , and i think 'the Wire' does do what he intends..it's not just a 'cops versus bad guys' ..'us and them' , detective story..it does make you think about the 'human condition' through the specifics of the characters...not all the bad guys are 'unsympathetic' characters..not all the 'good guys' are so good...i think we all know this but it's very satisfying to see played out..basically it's just great T.V.

Despite being an H.B.O. programme,"The Wire" has remained a "cult" hit,it seems. Spotting "Wire" characters ,as they go from strength to strength in movies has been fun ..and many of the top characters are British.Hurrah!

In the case of Idris Elba "28weeks later", i just had no clue, his accent is flawless,i'd say. I vaguely recall his appearance in "Absolutely Fabulous"..same goes for Dominic West " Mona Lisa Smile","300",although he did seem more familiar.

Channel four seemed to have aquired the rights to put "The Wire" on its "On Demand" online facility...but nothing has shown up yet..Thing is ,of course is that hardcore fans really only want to see season four and five. We've bought on DVD or downloaded up to now.

. A 'technical' gripe from me..why is this in 4.3 for cryin' out loud? Is it a budgetry consideration?. Maybe this has been an issue preventing take-up by a mainstream outlet in the U.K. I see that it is has shown on "F.X"  a digital channel that i do not have
and some of those 'lesser' channels are still in 4.3..whatever...

The title of this review,is not a judgement on the skill of the filmaker or anything, just a statement of fact from a personal point of view..

I could not get past the first "thumbnail" of the 11 year-old.

At the time,i could not carry on watching,i was just finding this too upsetting. I'm afraid that this chronicle of the desecration of Iraq just confirms what i feel anyway.

I know i'm sounding neurotic, but this,no doubt worthy and compassionate film was making me feel voyeuristic , and ,in a way ,wallowing in some sort of liberal self-congratulation.

  • "Pure brilliance" get it on DVD!

"Pure Dream" television.. brilliant and brave, a subversive piece of T.V art...expertly carved -out over two seasons,"Life On Mars" was and is everything that makes the BBC still great, and worth every penny of the T.V. license fee..
A U.S version has long been talked about.Should be good.
The thing is,why bother?  We lap up the H.B.O. content without question, why does something this good have to be "re-made" for the American market?...nevermind "shoulder to shoulder" we are often "joined at the hip" culturally.
The main character appears to ,ultimately confirm what many of us would affirm, that dreams are often preferable to reality..and then ,of course, this is a T.V character, inhabiting a fiction... His and our guide is the" test card "girl!... "He's in the best selling show"....ANYTHING is possible...overall this left me feeling , by turns ,uplifted, contemplative and melancholy...

  • Did you mean "State of Play" (2003)?

    Trainspotting  (1996)

    Human Traffic  (1999)

    Love Actually  (2003)

    Basic Instinct 2  (2006)

    Stoned  (2005)

    Hot Fuzz  (2007)

    Atonement  (2007)

    Shameless: Series 01  Production Year

    State of Play  (2003)

I came back to this because of John Simm's brilliant performance in 'Life On Mars'...
Just listing the cast, and the writer gives an idea of how good this is...
John Simm"24 hour party people","Human Traffic", Bill Nighy,"Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy","love Actually" ,"Shaun Of the Dead" , "Hot Fuzz"etc ,David Morrissey, "Stoned","Basic Instinct 2",loads of fantastic T.V. KellyMacDonald,"Trainspotting","No Country For Old Men" James McAvoy." Last King of Scotland","Atonement"...written
by Paul 'Shameless' Abbott...the story is one of 'political intrigue'...but it's really about the lives of the characters...
Apparently, there is a Hollywood version in the pipeline.. Brad Pitt
as the John Simm character!..i hate it already!

Latest news ,that i know of ,is that the writers strike may have claimed this production, with Brad Pitt dropping out... all i would suggest is...if you insist on "remaking" get the best, get John Simm, and keep it set in England...you know what? just forget it!...how could it possibly be better than this production anyway?

    Déjà Vu  (2006)

    Denzel Washington is great..
This is typical of director Tony Scott.. great explosions,a fresh take on 'time travel' a neat ,well told story and some taut acting from all concerned..enjoyable and not entirely forgettable.
