    The Siege  (1998)

This movie could not have been made after september the eleventh 2001...

For many, this would have been an introduction to the concept of "Islamiic fundamentalism" and the suicide bomber.

Even granted the truck bomb at the Trade centre (1993?),it would still seem a wild juxtaposition,to jump from an ambush in the desert, somewhere in the Middle-East,to the streets of Manhatten...

Viewing this again recently,i was struck by the contrasting scale of reality versus fiction.

Usually the movies run away with things, but in this case the catastrophic horror of 9/11, it's consequences and the reaction of the USA and Britain just dwarf the fiction on offer...

Well explored are the "civil liberties" issues...things do not go up to Presidential level, and New York deals with things locally by bringing in the Military.Cue testosterone showdown between Denzel and Bruce. The "internment" of all young Moslems in New York ,an idea that they have taken six seasons of "24" to get around to flirting with,(i havn't seen it all yet) is the one step that outdoes reality, playing with our emotions ,as a central character is involved, the great Tony Shalhoub...

In the movies ,a maverick "rule bender" like Denzel cuts through the departmental crap.

What is still precient ,and forms the backbone of the film, and,of course the "love interest" is what we now know to be an accurate portrayal of the way the  FBI, CIA  and Police are all very seperate bodies .

Their vested interests, poor communication and lack of shared intelligence, are explored here, and we know those shortcomings  to be significant in failing to see 9/11 coming.

  • An Oscar for the wrong film

    The Departed  (2006)

Oh dear..i enjoyed this hugely through the first three quarters,,especially Leonardo DiCaprio..but it  left me (Bourne)Ultimat(um)ely exasperated!

Because,of course,i knew it to be a "re-make" of a favourite of mine,

"Infernal Affairs" , i tried hard not to compare the two films..

However ,as the Jack Nicholson character,( "the Joker" was it?),meets a James Cagney-like demise, and the body count starts to mount, i just started to laugh my socks off..Head shot after head shot, who's next?..what about that woman who kept smiling at Matt Damon, okay she takes out Mark Walburgh , then, Alec Baldwin is waiting round the corner for her.. talk about spelling it out for us. The amazing tensions set up in the first third or so are just squandered, and become totally risible ,sacrificed for the sake of explaining the plot...
We all know that Scorsese should have had an Oscar before now,

maybe two ,"Taxi Driver", "Goodfellas",throw in another for "Raging Bull" , amazing, ICONIC ,life charting movies... He ends up getting it for this , a vastly INFERIOR re-make of a near perfect film..very sad.

maybe"The Departed" should have won "best film in a foriegn language"?.

  • Sandlers only good film

    Punch-Drunk Love  (2002)

Finding ,as i do ,most of Adam Sandler's "output, totally unfunny...i would say that this is undoubtedly his BEST so far...

The character seems to have anger issues, possibly an "Aspergers syndrome" sufferer?..bi-polar obessive compulsion,or whatever we are calling getting a bit nutty these days, seems to come into it,especially concerning Harmoniums.

Emily Watson ,knowing her only for the infuriating "Breaking the Waves",seems inexplicably  transformed into one of  the SEXIEST women on the planet .

Mary Lynn Rjaskub, i've loved her in everything from "The Larry Sanders Show" to "24" is wonderful,as one of the many sisters.."Barry,your sister's on line one..."

Philip Seymour Hoffman,is someone else who is never less than tremendous, and has gone from strength to strength..As far as "PDL" goes "That's that.."

This is a triumph of quirky ,darkly comic, yet romantic film making...

Director P.T.Anderson is ,of course, about to be lauded for his latest ...

    Ghost World  (2001)

I just happened upon the news that Brad Renfro has died...just 25.

First thing i think of is "Ghost World" and "Bully",of course...

    What a waste...
