    Inland Empire  (2006)

Further into the labyrinth we go with David..if the twists of "Mulholland Drive" lost you,(did you see what i did ?) then i dont expect you will get here... It's over-long and sprawling on first viewing ,but the apparently barren sections are punctuated by such genuinely shocking imagery, that you will go back for more, but with a deal of trepidation.. A crazily quick run through from me..The fracturing of the "narrative" begins almost straight away..the first section echoes "Mulholland Drive"and then "Lost Highway" ,as reality  and artifice is undermined and characters appear to transform..a thread that is introduced in the first few scenes dominates the middle section..the final section brings the climaxes of shocks and mind games, further twisting into the labyrinth..the end-title sequence with all Lynch's assembled "lovelies" ,like waking from a nightmare, provides a welcome sigh of relief.

    Control  (2007)

Having lived through the events portrayed, followed the music press devotedly at the time...the story was a given...I had a good idea how it would look...."24 Hour Party People" gave the now dead Tony Wilson's perspective..Anton Corbijns photos from the NME were regulars on my bedroom wall, and as he has said, Joy Division's career was documented almost entirely in black and white..the film just had to be that way too,and it is brilliantly realised....I never did own a Joy Division record .I did admire the sheer heart-wrenching artistry ,but really found it too relentlessly melancholic. Maybe ,like Cobain a few years later, you could detect the creator remaning too immersed in the down side of the manic process of music making and performing.

"Control" as a piece of moviemaking  is a triumph for Anton Corbijn and the actors, who were determined to perform the music live..and they are brilliant,at least as good as the real thing. In one sequence ,it seems that we are hearing the recorded version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" which segues seamlessly into a live performance by the actors!...Apart from Sam Riley, Samantha Morton is just wonderful , Toby Kebbell is hilarious as manager Rob Gretton(portrayed by Paddy Consadine in "24 Hour,..")and Craig Parkinson is a totally believable Tony Wilson..Sad but superb...

    Cruising  (1980)

    The Exorcist  (1973)

This was when Pacino (and De Niro,of course) never mind Bill"tThe Exorcist (1973)" Friedkin could seemingly do no wrong...Just imagine how "controversial" this was back in 1980!..the "deep cover" that the character embarks upon breaches a lot of taboo areas, and just think of how ,rightly or wrongly, the stigma of HIV hung over things...One abiding memory is how we joked about being careful NOT to let ANYTHING hang out of your back pockets.

  • Heavy stuff ...Darling

    Wetherby  (1985)

Tim McInnerny is best known as "Darling" from Blackadder, but this is no laughing matter... I found Wetherby disturbingly good..it played on my mind for a long time ..I remember the tenuously related deaths seemed to have drug taking references,or they appeared that way to me.at the time. Paranoia and the knife edge of mental illness also seemed clear themes..the relationship between the Vanessa Redgrave character and the investigating Policeman ,Stuart Wilson is especially intriguing...

  • Ferris Bueller why?

    Rushmore  (1998)

    Speed  (1984)

I'm with you CinemaRian, but it just seems like innocent fun or something..FB's DO has been on T.V loadsa times but i only saw it all the way through today, and laughed quite a bit. I knew a Ferrari was involved,a very pretty boy and girl..a tortured "authority" figure, the school principal..er,that's it . Maybe it's notable for "breaking the fourth wall"but doesnt add up to much apart from looking so shiny and fun and the opposite of "world weary",i laughed AT it aswell as with...they visit an ART gallery for cryin out loud!....It's the antithesis of everything that would pass for a "high school" comedy now ...like Rushmore (1998) or the wonderful "Ghostworld" or "Napoleon Dynamite"...and i couldnt help wondering all those idle thoughts like. Why didnt Mia Sara make more films, how come the only other thing i can remember seeing Alan Ruck in is "Speed" Why oh why did Jennifer Grey get a nose job!?...and how Matthew Broderick looks so cute,a lot like Ellen "Juno" Page...
