Ten Canoes
Herzog came to mind early on in this film. It has an incredibly naturalistic feel to it that really makes you feel like you are not watching a film. In a way, we get two stories in Ten Canoes. Both are told to us by a narrator. One is a story about a tribe setting off to make canoes. While they are gathering the bark needed, an older tribesman tells the main story of the film.
Completely set in the Australian Outback, this film feels like we are part of the tribe, and that we are personally being told some sort of parable or legend. Ten Canoes has a perfect pacing & running time. Nothing unimportant is added, and unexpected humor comes at all the right places. It's nothing like most films being made today, and it will stay with you for a long time.
