    Anacardium  (2001)

This indie film was really interesting.  I loved that it was basically the interaction between the two main characters.   From the start we know that Richard Ruccolo' s character has insinuated himself into the other mans life for a reason.  Every sentence he says is baiting, and digging for information.  Figuring out his motive is the ride of this movie.  I guess ultimately this film is about revenge.  How sometimes people become so overwhelmed with the "idea" of something, that the original motivaton sometimes gets lost along the way.  It also shows how there are always 2 sides to everything, and that sometimes the actual truth is only a matter of interpretation.  This isn't a great movie.  But it's definitely interesting.  The two leads are charismatic and you get caught up in the movement of it.  The ending could have been better. But if you like quiet films that are not just about big bangs, and CG effects, then you'll enjoy this one.

    Burnt Money  (2000)

I really enjoyed this movie.  Very stylish, great direction.  The chemistry between the two main characters is undeniable.  Parts were a bit hard to follow, I think that has to do with the editing, but still a good one.  Based on a true story, this is a real thrill ride.

    Stealing Home  (1988)

I love this one.  A little surprise of a movie.  Not a mindless piece of fluff.  You care about the characters.  Mark Harmon's character is a man who has lost everything.  He is jolted back into life when he is told someone from his past killed herself.  He returns home, and amid flashbacks to his childhood, we learn about the girl (Jodie Foster) and the impact she had on his life and his family.  Along the way, he is awakened back to life.  Jonathan Silverman is great as his best friend.  (He has the best line in the movie, my title quote)  This movie is funny, touching, sad, and very nostalgic.  I watch it every time it's on tv and I own it so whenever I feel that nostalgic tug, I can watch it.

  • Great premise-poorly executed, but still.....

    Shiner  (2004)

Ok, this is one of those movies with a great premise, and you go in really wanting to like it.  I actually will give it a "thumbs up", but it is mostly for what the movie could be, then what it is.  If someone had a bigger budget, better lighting, sets, etc, and a tweeked script, this could really be a great indie film.  The story revolves around sets of people, whose lives are full of violence.  There's a hetero couple, where the man is abusive, and bullying, yet it is obvious she stays because that's the kind of relationship she wants.  There's the two buddies, who are straight (or at least so they say), who enjoy going to gay bars, letting guys hit on them, then beating them up for sport.  Of course, when the friends get back to their apartment, they are strangely turned on by the violence they inflicted, and the two then fight each other in a strange homo-erotic, yet completely straight way.  There's the muscle building guy, who has a stalker.  Who in turns becomes the stalker, when the guy is scared off and stops following him.  (This was the most developed of the 3 stories and my favorite). There are a few surprises, which save the film when it starts to fade.  Like I said, very interesting premise, you can tell this movie was a labor of love to make, but the way it is done, ultimately hurt it .  I own this movie, I've watched it several times and it is a good one for a collector.  Definitely worth a peek for those who like small made films.

    New Year's Day  (2000)

This is one of my favorite films.  With characters you grow to care about,.  The acting and the direction is so good, that  you can almost feel their sadness.  There are moments of laugh until you almost cry, and some that are extremely serious.  The scene with the cop is a fave.  The two main actors are wonderful and hopefully they will continue to put out work for us to enjoy.

  • Hilarious sports movie!

    Guys and Balls  (2004)

Hilarious sports movie about a guy who loves playing soccer.  When he is "outed", he deals with getting kicked off the team, shunned by his town, ignored by his father, and being distanced from his friends.  So he decides to start his own team of gay players.  His search sends him to some unsuspecting places.  Of course, there is the big match up with the old team and the new one.  Some really cute scenes where they have open tryouts.  And a blossoming love between him and a team mate.  This was a really laugh out loud film.  I love good foreign films and this one is great.  You won't be disappointed.

    Metropolitan  (1990)

I absolutely love this movie!! People either love this movie, or just don't get it.  Talk about a perfect script!!  Perfect casting, beautiful sets.  And chocked full of quotes.  "Tom, Audrey....cha cha cha".  "She went to one of those horsey-girls schools....she'd never shower, only putting on more and more makeup...she'd be silent for days, then talk insessantly about Paul McCartney."   "The SFRP...."  I think Whit Stillman is a genius, and this is by far his greatest work.  But I would stand in line for days to say anything he wrote or directed.  GREAT FILM.  GOTTA SEE IT

This is one of those really cute gems that no one has ever heard of.  Ethan is a conceited, playboy, who claims he is looking for Mr. Right, but his actions say otherwise.  Way too picky, he always seems to find something wrong with every man he dates.   If you're looking for a gay themed film that will enlighten you, or share some social conciousness, this is not that movie.  But if you are looking for a cute film, with likeable characters, a funny script and some "awww" moments, then don't miss this.

    Read My Lips  (2001)

I love foreign films, or should I say, I love good foreign films.  This is one of them.  The two main characters who couldn't be more different, yet are exactly what the other one needs.  Carla is an office worker, who is dedicated, and hard working, yet completely overlooked and underappreciated.  She is utterly alone and is yearning for someone to come into her life.  Enter Paul.  A con who has the words "bad news" all but tattooed on his forehead.  His parole officer sends him on job interviews and when Carla sees him, she is intrigued.  He is completely unqualified, but hires him anyway.  Paul then uses Carla's talent for lip reading to his advantage in a far fetched robbery scheme.  She loves the excitement and thrills, although she is very frightened at the same time.  I know I'm making the plot seem kind of bland, but this movie is anything but.  Great direction, perfect casting, and a very interesting plot keep the film going.  You will find yourself rooting for them and wanting them to each get that happy ending that they are searching for.

  • Great novel, good film

This movie is set in a time when people actually "were" their jobs.  Mr. Stevens has spent his entire life serving those who were above him in social stature.  He devoted every ounce of his being into his work, and until he meets new housekeeper miss Kenton, he is content with his life.  Raised to keep all of his emotions hidden, to see but not be seen, he has no way of ever letting his feelings be known to her.  Both are too proud, too scared to let the other in on the way they are feeling.  When Stevens looks back on his life many years later, the truth of what his life was, is and will be, is quite apparent to him.  The sets are gorgeous, the acting fabulous, and the script is a faithful adaption of a wonderful novel.  This is one to not be missed.  I own and have seen this movie at least 20 times, and still tear up at the exact same place.

    The Dreamers  (2003)

This is one of those films where the style beats out the substance.  Still, i did like it.  Movie buffs will enjoy the scenes where they try to come up with a movie reference that stumps the other two.  Also the scenes where they run through the Louvre are great!  Could have done without the hints of the "are they or aren't they" when it comes to the twins, though.  Wasn't necessary to the plot.  Still, the scenery is beautiful.  The actors are great, and it is definitely worth watching.

  • Funny movie.

    Just One Time  (1999)

This is a really cute film.  Kind of dated, but funny nonetheless.  Jennifer Esposito is adorable and the ending makes everything worth while.  I especially loved the scenes where all the firefighter buddies are at the gay club, feeling really out of place one minute.  Then dancing up a storm the next and making plans to go back on "wig" night !!!  Cute, cute film.

    C.R.A.Z.Y.  (2005)

This is a really good film.  Deals with the 4th son in a family of 5 boys.  Born on Christmas day with a strange birthmark (dark hair except for a patch in back that is blonde and stays that way).  He is considered special by his mom.  He is kind of a misfit, around his brothers who all have designated roles in life: the jock, the egghead, the cool one, the baby.  His mom is a devout catholic, who believes her son is a healer.  His dad just wants him to love music like he does.  (His dad is a HUGE Patsy Cline fan!!).  His older brothers torment him.  His baby brother adores him.  After all, he was his late birthday present one year.  Throw in the fact that he might be gay in a strict catholic household and you can see why his life is so troubled.  This is an extremely funny, very real film.  I really loved this movie.  This is not your typical coming out film, not at all.  It's a film about how real families are, and how we all interact with each other within the family dynamic.  The casting is dead on, the performances great. This movie will make you laugh out loud, tear up, and cheer for the underdog.  I especially loved the way the title is "explained" at the start of the credits. Don't know why I didn't see it sooner!!

  • Perfect film!

This is one my all time favorite movies ever.  Please don't let the fact that it's a "foreign" film scare you off.  This movie plays like magic.  It is about as perfect of a film that I've ever seen.  It is funny, heartwarming, thrilling and just plain magical.  Watch it!!!!!  You won't be disappointed.
