'Stevenage is great,' says protagonist Phil. 'If you like concrete.'
This film is a low budget, character based drama with heart and balls. It grabs you from the beginning with schoolboy Phil seeing his mother commit suicide, and doesn't let go. The film weaves the stories of the four main boys together nicely, showing their lives come together or destruct in the long summer following their final school exams. UK residents will appreciate the dry, subtle humour which makes no apologies for its Britishness, and the acting is top notch. Recommended highly if you want to see young stars such as John Simm, Andrew Lincoln and Marc Warren earn their equity cards. A kick-ass soundtrack full of hits by the Stone Roses, Velvet Underground and more tops off this superbly directed movie.
