Recently, a friend of mine asked me to go with her to see Martin Scorsese's The Departed. Typically, I shy away from violent films, but I absolutely LOVED this movie! Of course, it didn't hurt that The Departed features an All-Star cast, including: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg and screen legends Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen.
Full of plot twists and turns-- not to mention the largest body count I've seen since Goodfellas (Scorsese's Oscar-winning film of 1990)-- The Departed gives a suspenseful and thrilling look into a modern day battle of good vs. evil -- the Boston State Police Department vs. the South Boston-Irish mob-- or visa versa. With the lines blurred so well by the film's characters and the actors who bring them to life, it can be hard to tell the good from evil.
Damon and DiCaprio are outstanding in their roles as two of the Boston State Police Department's finest (or worst), while Nicholson and Wahlberg bring understated comic releif to such a violent film.
This film is not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking for a film that delivers on all levels-- The Departed is a must see.
