Group Name: Movies we do not want to see - Try to convince us to see these movies!
Group Description: Want to be a member? Send me a message with a list of at least 5 movies that you do not want to see.

There are many movies that I do not want to see. I'm not sure if its right of me to decide never to see a movie without seeing it. You know...like when a kid says they hate mushrooms even though they admit never trying them. So maybe this is a good spot for people to display movies they don't think they want to see, and see if anyone can convince us to try them out.
Body: Here let's discuss simply, the greatest cinematography we've experienced through the art of film. It can be the cinematography that fed your eyes a magnificient feast with it's lighting, point of view, various lenses used in particular shots, etc. in a film or in a documentary. Go back as far as your childhood or just to today and discuss a film or documentary that you believe to hold some great cinematography and explain how and why you think it had the effect it did on you. Have fun!
Body: Looking back at all of my movie going experiences in the past and comparing it to this film I have come to the conclusion that experiencing this film was truly one of the most engaging experiences of my life. From the very beginning they show how mysterious this bridge is and how it draws people seeking a solution to it. Uneven people go here to end their sadness and confusion. We see them jump off of this bridge as if they are entering a better place. They dont rely on showing people jump off of the bridge into the ocean. Instead they focus on what these people were like by interviewing their families and friends. The study of the human mind is very interesting. This is the study of the mind of people that saw no hope and no other way to continue living so they found that the best way to end this was to jump off of "The Golden Gate Bridge". The camera is looking at the bridge 24/7 for about a month. They filmed over twenty deaths of people jumping off of the bridge. We dont see all of them which was a wise decision on the directors part. We just see the ones of the families that were interviewed. We don't really think about this as much as those that actually consider shortening there life by choice. Most of these people aren't insane or anything. They just couldn't find any other way out of how they were feeling. We get a fascinating look at an interview with a man that actually jumped off of the bridge and survived. He talks about the experience and that right after he jumped that he wanted to live and luckily he did. Now he is trying to help suicidal people all around America. This story is disturbing at points and yet incredibly intriguing. Towards the end of the film I began to look back at the end of "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". I'm of course talking about when the princess knew of a bridge that if she jumped off of she would be able to join her teacher whom had died. She made this choice because she saw no other way to complete her life. She knew she would never come back but know one could change her mind. You can't change people because when someone wants to take their own lives they have made the biggest decision of their lives. Many of these people believe that they will be going to a better place. With all of the mystery in this world how can you prove them completely wrong. Only the one that created the person that made this decision can know. We can only wonder..........
Body: There have been many criterion collections of Ingmar Bergman's work. I own Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander in the Criterion edition and I still haven't made time to watch their full length versions. Now that he has died I feel a burning need inside that I must watch these films. Not only watch them with my 5 senses but embrace the magic he created with these stories and a camera. I have not seen many Antonioni films but I plan on watching all of his after I am finished with Bergman's films. You're right quint, they should come out with a complete criterion collection of all of their films. They both create such thought provoking films that i'm always amazed that they made the films they did. Roger Ebert once wrote that he flew down to Sweden many years ago so that he could interview Ingmar Bergman. He said that when Ingmar Bergman arrived at the set of his new film that he was directing at the time, that everyone acted like he was the pope. I think you can say that he was the pope of films for the time he made these films. His films were religious and were as thought provoking as many verses in the bible. Antonioni had a completely different style of filmmaking but he still made films that were as challenging as Bergman's films. What are some of your favorite Bergman or Antonioni films? How did you interpret them? Let us discuss them now because this is the time to look back at two masters of the cinema who contributed so much more than we could ever imagine!
Body: I saw it on dvd as well! I'd have to watch the film again to be able to tell you when she says that to Christian Bale's character. I know she tells him this after they're married. Watch the film again and just watch the scenes after they are married and are having conversations with eachother. It should be there somewhere. I'm going to try and rent that film again so I will know.
Body: Even though all of you should know this already, if you haven't seen the ending of "The New World" then STOP READING THIS RIGHT AWAY! Interesting perspective on the ending tmoney. I believe that most of what you're saying is quite true. But you are missing what Pocahontas said to Christian Bale's character which lays out the last images of the film. I've only seen the film once and that was about a year ago so I may be a little rusty on the exact words she said to him. She said,"I will always be like the trees in the forest watching over you and giving you shade; I will always be flowing through you like a river." That's why Terrence Malick decided to put the shot of the trees and the river at the very end because that's who Pocahontas was. Like you were saying, she basically is one with the forest and the trees and river are the main elements of this forest that she represents. She was a calm being just like the forest and she left in a calm way. It's very quiet at the end and all we hear are the rustling trees and the flowing river in the distance. Through every image and sound, she is there. She's now the wind that moves along silently, flowing through the forest which will forever remain who she is.
Body: You know Pixar has really come out with some great films. They just played Monsters, Inc. on ABC tonight and I caught the last 10 minutes of it. The ending was perfect and very touching. It reminded me a little bit of the ending in Sideways which I loved and I think is a truly underrated comedy. The two endings both end at the door which opens to something that the two main characters both truly need. We only see the main characters on the final shot and they are looking at or about to see their future and what will bless them with true happiness. They are both bittersweet endings and will always have a place on my favorite endings!
Body: You know I just thought of another film that had an ending that never really occurs in action films. I am talking about the ending in "To Live and Die In L.A.". That ending must have have really suprised people when the main character, the good guy died. He was killed while fighting the bad guy. I'm sure that turned a lot of people inside out and it probably angered many because so many Americans are use to the good guys winning, not dying.
Body: Yes, much of what you're saying is true. The endings in films are like our own lives. We are constantly searching for truth and we want answers. Not everything ends up being crystal clear to us and sometimes we'll never find what we're looking for but in film there's always a reason for the ending they chose, just like our lives. It's obvious we won't always understand an ending and sometimes we might make up our own. Most of the time the writer and director know what their ending is suppose to mean even if no one understands it. Terrence Malick knew exactly what his ending meant in "The New World" and he knew that if the audience truly paid attention to his film, then the ending would make perfect sense. There's not always a meaning to every ending and this is indeed true. Our preconceived notions when going into a film aren't always fulfilled and that's an interesting psychological truth to film. We can all see the same ending and yet we have all seen the same thing from our own perspective which creates a different ending for all of us. One person may expect a happy ending while the other may expect a sad one. What if neither are satisfied because they weren't sure if the ending was a happy or sad one? Does that mean that the film contained no meaning? Now what you are writing about is your philosophy on the viewers perception of the ending of films and that is not the answer to the discussion I began. What I am asking is about the films that seemed confusing but in reality have a perfect reason of why they ended that way. Have you seen "The New World"? If you have then did you understand it or did you guess? If you understand film then you will know after careful analysis if the end of a film could mean anything or if there was a specific message or statement being presented to you! Many endings are debatable, this is true, but then there are endings that involve you to put all of these pieces that you gathered from the film to come up with what the filmmaker intended the audience to understand. Right?
Body: Here is were we will discuss the endings that kept us guessing or the ones that we must clear up for others that may have not understood the ending. Let me start off with a film that had an ending that I never found confusing but for some reason everyone i've ever asked about the ending just ended up guessing. I'm talking about the film "The New World" with Christian Bale and Colin Firth. The ending was perfect! Who knows or has absolutely no idea what the last images in the film meant? Any takers?
Body: Oh also lukasblu, if you have ever seen an Ozu or an Ingmar film than you would think this film was moving at the perfect pace. You cannot judge a film based on how it's paced unless it moves slow for no reason at all or it moves too fast for no reason at all except to entertain the audience. Babel knew it's pacing style and it was used to fit the mood of the film which can turn off some interest in a lot of Americans today that are used to fast paced Hollywood movies.
Body: Yes, Amorres Perros was fantastic and 21 grams could have been better. "Babel" was a very deep film and has been misunderstood by many and I see you are one of them as well. What did you not like about it? Haven't seen "Short Cuts" but I certainly would like to. "Nine Lives" was a wonderful film or should I say films. Which short stories were your favorites? Why? My favorite was the one were that woman bumped into her old boyfriend at the grocery. That was brilliant and she was incredible in that scene!
Body: Oldboy was such a great film and what a disturbing one as well. Now I remember the ending! That really left a mark on me from that one scene that really summed up the entire film. You could see such an incredible amount of emotion in his facial expression when he was hugging his "daughter". The emotion I saw overpowering his entire face was a strong sense of feeling lost and a bit of confusion as to were he was and were he's suppose to go. I really love it's twisted ending and it was mixed with a bit of sadness which I found all the more perfect to conclude this very dark film.Another ending that I think was truly misunderstood by a lot of the people that saw it, was the ending in The New World. I want to know who truly understood the last three images in that film. To this day, I haven't found one person who understood that ending. So who got it?
Body: "Magnolia" is such a unique film and so very interesting every time you watch it. How does Paul Thomas Anderson create these stories and so many characters to move around in them as real people to were we actually care about them? Well he definitely suprised everybody with the frogs falling from the sky but it made perfect sense and it really put the film on another level. Great film!
