I will love Russell Crowe forever for his portrayal of Bud White. This Oscar loss hurt more than Goodfellas and I will always be cynical about the Academy for rewarding Titanic over this. 3. The Player - OK, this one definitely feels like and looks like a 90's movie, but it will never feel dated to me. Like most of Altman's films it is a capsule of a specific time and place. This is the ultimate film lover's treasure hunt - references galore! 4. Hard-Boiled - I will throw in an international film with this John Woo action pic. and it's a brilliant one. I prefer this over Woo's The Killer, but they are both perfect genre representatives. Woo's bullet ballet has become a parody of itself, but this film is a masterpiece of staging and Chow Yun-Fat turns in his best performance. 5. Bottle Rocket - This is Wes Anderson's "smallest" film, but it is indie perfection. The Wilson brothers have never been so good and I laugh just thinking of certain scenes in this favorite. I can forgive Anderson for The Darjeeling Limited (which is hard for me to do) because of Bottle Rocket.

I watched it based on the recommendation from TV Guide's Matt Roush, who's opinion I greatly respect regarding everything on the small screen. However, I don't really know why Roush recommended this one (I'm guessing it's because it is a semi-return to "TV movie of the week" miniseries of the 70's and 80's. I was never a big fan of the original - I fell asleep the first few times I tried to watch it (and I do NOT fall asleep during movies). I guess if you love these biological nightmare stories and all the dry medical debates that go with them then you will like this and Outbreak. I thought this version was overlong and miscast. Sitcom actors like Christa Miller and Eric McCormack really struggled to bring any kind of serious emotion to their line readings, and I tried to like Ricky Schroeder, but he didn't help his career with this role at all. All in all, I feel like I should have taken a pass on this and done something better with the hours.

If you are a Sopranos fan you can see a lot of inspiration for Adriana's death from this movie. I always respect Bertolucci's eye for cinema but his characters are always too messed up for me - psychologically, emotionally, and especially sexually. He also doesn't seem to get that less is sometimes more. However, I will always respect him for his writing contribution to one of my favorite cinematic masterpieces - Once Upon a Time in The West.

It's a true story that works against usual Hollywood formulas and is beautifully shot by Lucien Ballard. I am stunned that the actor that has consistently disappointed me since he became a leading man came up with such a solid film. I usually hate Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford's directed efforts and I respect their acting much more than Affleck's, but Ben Affleck may have found a true talent for directing. Body: There are a lot of movies that I love that have heists in them but they are usually a means to an end and the bulk of the film usually deals with the fallout of said heist. Straight up heist films I love are : Jean Pierre Melville's stylish and masterful Le Cercle Rouge and Un Flic. The Hot Rock and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (good call, Rizzo) are two of my favorite seventies Heist movies. One Heist film I just love is The Great Train Robbery - there is one perfectly choreographed scene that involves a lanky Donald Sutherland (he was so awesome in these quirky roles) and an impossible-to-get key that is a site to behold. Just recently I saw The Brinks Job and The Day They Robbed The Bank of England on TCM and I liked them both (but i do like Peter Falk and Aldo Rey respectively so that might have something to do with it). Finally, even though it is not a heist film I love what DePalma did in Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise's famous spy scenes. DePalma always could set a scene with the best of them. All the others have already been metioned previously and I concur with Riffifi ( great movie-making and that umbrella trick is great), The Usual Suspects (but again, it seems like it more revolves around the aftermath), Heat always gets my blood stiring, and Point Break ( the robbery scenes were kind of new for back then and had a nice edge - plus, that movie has one of the BEST foot chases ever) and Inside Man was pretty stylish ( and anything that gets Denzel and Chiwetel Ejiofor onscreen together gets my vote). One of my favorite comedies that revolves around a heist is Quick Change - Bill Murray cracked me up and this exchange brings tears to my eyes when I watch the movie - classic Murray:Grimm: [sobbing] The man is an animal! Ripping out phones, urinating on desks... you see what he did to Ms. Cochran's shirt? There's a scratch here, I mean, it's not deep, but... it's there. Phyllis: It's okay. Chief Rotzinger: Did he hurt anybody else? Is the strain beginning to show on him? Grimm: "If I could sleep ten days and nights in a rice paddy, I could certainly last in this lousy bank." This is what the animal said to us! He says to Ms. Cochran here: [makes humping motions at Phyllis] Grimm: "Baby! Up your butt with a coconut!" I think he was prepared to do it! Keep in mind this is my own opinion and you are talking to someone that enjoys a strong traditional narrative in his movies too. I'm all for creativity, but I like it to have some logic (within the plot, characterizations or dialogue) within the writing otherwise it feels a little.....well.. for lack of a better word...masturbatory.
