If you are a member of this group, you love everything about the Super Bowl of movies, especially the movies themselves! Group Name: Movies we do not want to see - Try to convince us to see these movies!
Group Description: Want to be a member? Send me a message with a list of at least 5 movies that you do not want to see.

There are many movies that I do not want to see. I'm not sure if its right of me to decide never to see a movie without seeing it. You know...like when a kid says they hate mushrooms even though they admit never trying them. So maybe this is a good spot for people to display movies they don't think they want to see, and see if anyone can convince us to try them out.
Perhaps while writing it will come to me that the movie DID suck. Things I liked: the camera work, the soundtrack, and the young actors. I also REALLY like movies where good things happen. I think its way too depressing to always have terrible things happen just because its like "real life." When I go to the movies, sometimes I just want to be super happy for the characters. YAY! GOOD THINGS HAPPEN SOMETIMES IN REAL LIFE TOO! Anyway, I also liked the cycles within the film. I know that is one of the things you disliked, but the repetative structure worked for me. The cycle of question and memory was not so rigid that it didnt still feel like a fluid story to me. And the cycle of betrayal and redemption between the two brothers was probably my favorite part of the film. I know you thought that Salim's reform was "inexplicable" but I saw it as the last part in a cycle. Stuff I didnt like: the flatness of the adult characters and the odd mix of debauchery within a tale about the absurd. You spoke pretty adeptly about the adult actors so I wont go into it. But I continue to be bothered by how strangely the movie works in regards to its mix of light and dark material. It shows the slums as beautiful with sweeping camera shots and orchestral music as kids playfully scamper away from security guards. But then we see how those kids might be treated if they were caught when Jamal is tortured later in the film by the police. Or when the men from the "Orphanage" come and take the kids to create maximum profit beggars by making them blind or lame. I guess in the end, this is a film that is more deceptive than it appears. Its fun to watch, the ending is happy, and everyone can leave knowing that two more slum kids will have mega bucks and love to keep them warm at night. But in reality thats pretty slippery ground to end the movie on. In retrospect it smacks a bit of exploitation and Hollywood sweets. What about the rest of the orphan kids? What about the terrifying corruption and evil we witnessed throughout the rest of the film? Maybe I'm thinking about it too much, but I am starting to wonder if other people are not thinking about it enough. I dont know. Some films are not meant for some people. My aunt didnt like the Dark Knight because it was . . . . .TOO DARK. Well, fair enough. Maybe you didnt like this movie because you hate love? Fortunately, I doubt that. So, back to the question at hand: Did this movie "suck?" No, it didnt. But it wasn't great either.
Body: I get it. The formula that is. Stuff happens at work. Stuff happens at home. They relate to and effect one another. The element I have responded to on each episode is the reaction of Ron vs. the reaction of Mary. (As a side note, its weird how they are listed as un-named, and yet they are called by name in the episodes ??) We get to see Ron's day job and then we get to hear about Mary's time at work. This is very familiar to me as when at home I rarely bring up work while my wife seems to speak of nothing else. I wonder if this is just coincidence but it seems likely that Swanberg has hit upon another tidbit of relationship realism that gives this series its charm and "truthiness." I found myself chuckling uncomfortably or grimacing during the first section of each short and then grinning during the home interactions. However, after reading the comments of the other posters from previous episodes, I have begun to wonder if this series is meant for or somehow just more accessible to people in “committed relationships.” I’m not even talking about the artistic parts of this. I mean just basic enjoyment. Going home to a spouse is an experience that not everyone has. Does that give me a leg up on enjoying this set of shorts? Are single people less likely to like it?
Body:
I'm even excited for some directors that have fully established themselves in my mind, making their own masterpieces already. But its exciting to think that something even better is still on the way. The Coen brothers' latest film No Country for Old Men is currently their highest rated movie on IMDB. Although I know sometimes movies that have only been seen in limited release can get huge IMDB ratings and then come down once the general public absorbs it.
Huh...Rizzo, I find it very interesting that you keep refering to general acceptance or popular polls to decide if something is a masterpiece. I'm not sure I would list that as the most important criteria for "masterpiece." Also, Indieabby: I hope to high heaven that Zach Snyder can make something better than 300. If 300 is a masterpiece of film making...well...that sucks. That movie was bad. Lots of potential.....but ugh. I REALLY wanted that movie to be good. sigh..... Hmmm, I suppose these two comments do bring up the question of definition again. Are we talking about masterpiece in relation ONLY to the single director? Or are we talking about masterpiece in relation to the art of making movies. It feels like there is a nice middle ground to be had here, but Im not sure everyone agrees on what that is. It seems to me that we are talking about both a bit. The movie which is going to be called a masterpiece or the director that we are hoping has a masterpiece is both related to the catalogue of material as a whole while being specifically compared to the personal material. For instance, Wes Anderson was mentioned: some say that he has yet to create a masterpiece where others are talking about Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums. However, it was mentioned that his movies have made it onto the "Criterion Collection." So it seems necessary to be personally successful or outstanding, while also being lauded by critics or the general public. To participate in the original question, although I am a huge fan of his work so far, I think that Wes Anderson could make a better movie.I do have to say that I am a little scared of listing directors that HAVE made thier masterpiece. I took some art classes in college and one of my profs once said that you should hope to never make a masterpiece, but only to keep striving for better and better work. Cheesy?? Definately. Somehow vaguely inspiring?? Unfortunately...yes.
Body: If you were the person you are today at age one, what would have been your first spoken word? LOLXORSWhat, if anything, do you value more than consistency? HAH! I dont really even value consistency that highly.....loyalty is my pick, thank you Sam GamgeeWhat famous painting is most likely a portrait of you?Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase What cinematic landscape do you live in?Wayne's World.....really, I live right near where they filmed parts of that movie... It is said of you:"When I first met you...I really thought you were annoying...haha, in fact, I HATED you....but now, I kinda like you." What is the color of your voice?kelly green?? (sorta bright...but sometimes loud and annoying?) What is the origin of your Spout moniker? It has been my nickname since highschool....also known as Mathias Proffesional... What is your alter ego's favorite drink?Depending on what is meant by alter ego, I would say either Three Wisemen or Water. If alter ego means my opposite evil twin, it would be Three Wisemen which is a shot of Johnny Walker gold, Jim Beam, and Jack Daniels....grossest drink EVER... But if alter ego means "super hero," I have to say water because heros are normally well groomed and healthy, and PARTICULARLY well hydrated. What are the traits of your hero? loyal, self sacrificing, and REALLY good looking, you know....like the movies. You understand these languages intuitively:well...sorta english....but definitely not ANY other language... What would your robots accomplish? the end of busy work....the death of things I hate doing. What is your favorite onomatopoeia?bleh or BAH!To which animal do you feel the strongest kinship?probably dogs What is your favorite mythical monster?the masticore...just cause it is cool, but is also a KILLER Magic: the Gathering card. Which objects would you substitute for currency?Magic: the Gathering cards....I have SOOO many useless ones....sigh. Oh man, if they were currency, my wife would LOVE that I own so many of them instead of going...."hey, honey? can you....like.....get rid of some of these?" Who or what is the embodiment of good taste?I would say some sort of hybrid-hipster-monster of my friends Adam and Kevin....To whom belongs the future? My progeny (mwahahahaha)Little do most people know, . . .nothing...I am an incredibly open book....probably annoyingly so at times... What is a sentence you've never said out loud, and probably never will?No no, thats ok honey, let ME clean up...I just LOVE doing chores...What's that? Take out the trash? Sweep the floors? Wash the pots and pans? Scrub the bathtub? YES! *fist pump* THIS IS THE BEST SATURDAY EVER!What question are you not asked often enough? What can I get for you, my royal and stunningly good looking king?
</spout:body>

Body: Hmmm...I guess I will put it like this:Lester Burnahm has a mid-life crisis. He is mired in a deep depression and finds that along the way, he has floated far from the familiar dock of family life. This is a terrifying realization for him, but freeing at the same time. But, instead of trying to make things "better," he decides to stick it out in the mud. And sure, this is very gratifying for a while. It can be "rewarding" to be extremely self-indulgent, to stop caring about those around you. But it is also very selfish. Perhaps there are moral limits to this that need to be observed. And I definitely think that Kevin Spacey's character crosses those limits. Now, I dont want to get into an argument about recreational drug usage or whether its ok to splurge on a sweet red Camaro and attempt to re-live the "glory days." But I think there is a certain evil that resides in the heart of a middle aged man that makes a conscious decision to seduce and sleep with a 15 year old girl. There are some major moral pitfalls evident in a human's life when that person encourages recreational drug use with a young and obviously troubled boy.Sure...SURE! I find it hard not to root for him. I find it VERY difficult not to say, TO HELL with all those moral convictions and the code of conduct that you "should" be living by as a parent of a young and troubled daughter. And I HATE the way his wife attempts to emasculate him and how obsessive she is about winning winning winning. BUT, those things do NOT make it any less true that Lester Burnahm is becoming a dead beat dad; a druggie, and a child molester. These things are bad. And by doing them...he becomes the "bad guy." Now, here is the problem...the same problem presented for me by Darth Vader. And really, that is what I think this whole "bad guy" discussion is all about for me. I think there are really great bad guys that are obviously Bad People. The ones that make you just BURN with anger and really get into your mind with thier wickedness like the above mentioned Percy Wetmore. But in the end, these aren't the "bad guys" that really move me. I don't have the itch to torture people or act with wicked abandon and malice. However, I DO see a little of Lester in my own soul. I too can feel the call of young women and drugs and a life of carelessness. So...this begs the question: how much of a bad guy am I? And, maybe more importatnly, what am I going to do about it?I hope this clarifies my ideas for you. I would love to hear what you think.
Body: Kev and Paul, I really resonated with a lot of what you said in your latest FilmCouch. I really enjoy hearing the two of you and your guests talk. As you mentioned, Darth Vader is one of the best villians that I have ever seen. And although you guys mentioned him in conjunction with specifically The Empire Strikes Back, I think that one of the things that I liked about him as a villian was the end of the third movie. He is the embodiment of evil in many ways. He wears all black, has a cape and speaks with a deviously low voice and the mechanized parts of his body are distinctively "inhuman." I was thinking about what makes him so scarey...and it isn't that he just kills people, lots of villians do that. No, I think it has a lot to do with how he slowly CHOKES THEM TO DEATH....sheesh. Bad. Ness. But really, what makes him SUCH a good bad guy....is how human he actually turns out to be. And how he saves his son from death...not just saves him, DIES for him. That is amazing. And really...Christlike. And whether you believe in Christ or not, dieing for another is certainly a noble and loving thing to do. Which is a frightening thing to say...that a bad guy can end up being like the best guy. You guys also talked about the bad guy that you sorta root for anyway. Tony Soprano, Tony Montana....Micheal "Tony" Corleone. And you mentioned that these are BAD people...but you still root for them...but it is important to recognize that they are BAD. This made me think of an even more subtle bad guy. Lester Burnahm....Kevin Spacey's character from American Beauty. I really think that he should be considered a bad guy. A marvelously like-able bad guy, but a bad guy none the less. And I think that because he is a bad guy...that is why the movie is sooo good. Anyway, those are my thoughts for now. If you are looking for a soundtrack for this sort of thing, I think that Sufjan Steven's John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is a pretty good song to start with. He sorta makes you love that mass murdering psycopath....cause he is just like you.
Body: Totally. I think your comment on music is very relevant as well. It reminds me of the Gnarls Barkley album that came out a while ago. The two dudes that make up that duo are named Danger Mouse and Cee Lo Green. I read an interview with Danger Mouse (he is the same guy that did the incredible Grey Album...which is sort of another example of this) where he said that he and Cee Lo didnt really work in the same place very often on the album. He would record a set of beats or a background track and then send it to Cee Lo and then Cee Lo would sing something over it and send it back to DM...who would change his beats in accordance with some of the lyrics etc...and they built a lot of the album that way. Which I think is very cool. I wonder if that sort of thing is really possible with video? Maybe if you get a couple of people who are doing CG work....I dunno. It could be fun to try that with editing...where you would send a whole clip to someone...then send your edits of that clip where you make it into something else....and they could try it too.If you get a chance, this has reminded me of this really funny remade "trailer" for The Shining....just called Shining. I will try to link it here...Shining Trailer recut. It is quite funny and disturbing that you can make such a creepy and awesomely scarey movie look sooo much like a family fun whatever...yuck...especially the quick cut of Jack kissing his dead wife BLEH!!! shivers...Matt
Body: Puhnner!Thank you for that. So interesting to see everything laid out so simply.I suppose it was a bit naive of me to leave out the marketing aspect of this whole deal. But if one thing is certain, it is that if there ever seems to be a cheap and effective way to spread information (INTERNET!) then the advertising agencies of the world will certainly be the first to try and take advantage of it. There is an agency in Oregon (Portland I believe) that has been ahead of the curve on advertising forms for quite a while. Or at least for catching the pulse of desire in the world's markets and taking advantage of it. For instance, they coined the term "just do it" for Nike in the nineties (late eighties maybe??). I believe they are called Wieden & Kennedy. They are also responsible for the "Bo Knows" ad campaign and getting Lou Reed to work with Honda....who knew. Just recently, they had the uber-hip dance-a-thon musician James Murphy, who goes by the name of LCD Soundsystem, make a record called 45:33 which is supposed to be the "perfect" running CD...in that it creates a buildup, and climax, and a cool down all within the 45 minutes and 33 seconds that the record lasts. All of this to say that nothing is really safe from advertising. Which is ok I guess, just as long as you keep your wits about you and try to remain from being the "sucker..."I suppose I wanted to talk about things that had to do with strange un-explicable cultural phenomenons that crop up in cyber life. Ideas or websites that become WILDLY popular out of the blue. Some of these cyber memes end up turning back on themselves to then influence a new set of memes. I have seen influences like this work in movie making too. Terintino is a good example of this. He made the movie Reservior Dogs which in turn influenced a movie called Battle Royale which in turn he claimed as a reference on the Kill Bill series. Pretty interesting.I think a perfect example of meme marketing in Movies would be the whole Snakes on a Plane phenomena. The example that I was thinking of that I wrote that non-posted email to Porcupine and SkyPilot about happened in the game of World of Warcraft. You can read more about it at the link if you dont know what it is. I play... World of Warcraft is absolutley PACKED with these internet cultural references. Whether it is a character named Linken that closely resembles the character Link from the Zelda games (you have a quest to return his sword to him in WoW), or a dragon boss referenced as the Burninator from the popular website Homestarrunner.com. There are countless examples of this. One of my favorites is an item in the game called Deviate Delight. It is a piece of food that your character can eat that turns you either into a pirate or a ninja. Now, without knowledge of this internet trend, this can still be a cool and funny side-effect of eating this particular food. However, having been in college at the time of the ninja craze on the internet, I recognize the nod to the amazingly popular site RealUltimatePower. The thing about sites like this is that thier influence goes beyond even the knowledge of its beginings. I suppose that should not be as surprising to me as it is, but I am always sort of floored when I hear someone talk about ninjas "just wanting to flip out all the time and kill people" without any knowledge of where that started. Anyway, SkyPilot asked about a rumor he had heard: That there is a Chuck Norris craze in the world of gamers. This, I told him, is very true and entertaining. SP and Porcupine and I have a liking for that which is kitchy...and Chuck Norris is nothing BUT kitchy in my opinion. Anyhow, SP asked me to find some of the Chuck Norris jokes that I had been hearing online so I did and sent him a link which I will give here as well: Chuck Norris Jokes Beware...they are dirty...but many are quite funny. They mostly have to do with Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking someone in the face or being manlier or stronger than anyone else. Things like "It was discovered that Chuck Norris's tears cure cancer.....Too bad he has never cried."This then reminded me of some jokes from a set of sketches on Saturday Night Live that appeared a few years ago that were funny. They were about Bill Brasky. These occured when a group of guys all sat down in a bar and told stories...or more appropriately...one liners about their mythical friend Bill Brasky. Jokes like: "Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally Brasky takes me to a vacant lot and says, 'Here we are.' We sat there for a year and a half — until sure enough, someone constructs a bar around us. Well, the day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Brasky yelled over the roar of the flames, 'Always leave things the way you found 'em!'" Strangely enough, I found almost this exact same joke listed in the Chuck Norris jokes section of a different site. I suppose it just goes to show that these jokes are really just self feeding. For a very detailed look at this whole idea, you can check out the Wikipedia article on Chuck Norris. It AMAZINGLY mentions everything that I have found through some surfing and personal experience. It also mentions a World of Warcraft reference dealing with the popularity of Chuck in that game. It even goes so far as to mention the section of the game where he is talked about the most: the Barrens. Anyway, here is the link: Chuck Norris.Anway, all this to say: I dont know how to think about these things. How do they happen? What is the average time that they last? And more interestingly, WHY do they happen? I'm sure if ad agencies could get thier hands on that information...well, I assume that would be the end of free will!
</spout:body>

Body:
It seems like you've seen most of the biggest name stuff as far as movies go. I know of some more that you haven't, but I haven't seen them either, so I can't really recommend them. Except for the Cowboy Bebop movie, but I'd recommend watching the whole series before the movie. I think that series is probably the one that has brought the most people into becomming anime fans. I think it was made by some of the same people as Wolf's Rain as well. But if you watch a few episodes of Cowboy Bebop, I'd be surprised if you don't get hooked.
I actually saw the Cowboy Bebop movie a while ago when I was in the Calvin College Anime Club. I thought it was ok, but I didn't love it which is why it wasn't on my list. I did like the character of Eddy...or whatever that tech savvy little girl was named. She was funny and I liked her costumes. Perhaps I should have started with the series. Where do you get your episodes from? Are they available at stores like Blockbuster? I used to have Blockbuster Online...but I just wasn't watching as many movies as I wanted to while paying the 17 bucks a month...maybe I should give it another shot! Hah, perhaps that would curb my WoW enthusiasm a bit. Thanks for the suggestions DJS. I will check into Wolf's Rain as well.Matt
Body:
Well Matt, I actually usually find superheros to be pretty silly. So I don't get into the traditional ones very much. Especially the same ones over and over that everyone is obsessed over, which I think is pretty much the ones in the movies I had named. This Batman Begins movie was very dark, but I still find it pretty goofy. For instance, my all time favorite Batman is still Adam West because the show was basically doing a parody of the goofy but overly serious super hero premises. To me Hellboy brought out that kind of fun that the Adam West Batman did.
Rizzo...of course you like sillier stuff better. Of course. But I LOVE superheroes. LOVE 'EM. Like that show, Heroes....I eat that show up! Yeah it is overly dramatic..but...they are SAVING THE WORLD! Awesome. Now, I am going to admit something to you. Something kind of personal: I wish I could fly. Also, I wish I was highly trained in martial arts. And, I wish that if people were to shoot bullets at me, they would bounce off harmlessly. Finally, being able to breath under water would be sweet too.Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) these things are never going to be the case about me. So, I can watch the magic on the big screen. And I can play characters in games that live on and on and know how to use swords and stuff effectively. And I can dream about it. And that just may be where our tastes differ...which is fine.
Boy Matt, I'm going to have to inquire about this one [Bad Boys II]. I've never seen the original Badboys, but unfortunately for some horrible strange reasons I've actually seen Badboys II twice. I guess I can't just buy into the, lets blow up everything in sight for no reason idea. There was absolutely no regard for any kind of humanity in this movie. And did a movie like this really have to be 147 minutes long??Ok, let me know about that.
Now, Rizzo, about Bad Boys II. I have to say, I probably agree with you more than the things I wrote suggest. However, I don't think it is appropriate to denegrate a movie just because it doesn't live up to your hopes or expectations for it. The movie or movie making style just may not be for you. Also, I find a bit of comfort in the repetitious expolsions. It is reliable...you dont have to wonder if that car will eventually disolve into a rumbling ball of fire...you KNOW it will. Haha. And as far as humanity goes....I believe that the two bad boys themselves are narcotics cops. And drug dealers and pimps (other than Terrence Howard) are NOT humans...so killing them without abandon is NOT a problem. DING! Humanity back. Also, weren't they going to kill the bad guys to SAVE the sister of one of the bad boys and the girlfriend of another (all convieniently wrapped up in the same person on screen)?? That seems to show a bit of humanity and love. Now, I am writing this with a bit of a grin on my face because I know it doesn't really equate to good movie making...but still, I WAS surprised that I enjoyed them as much as I did. And I kinda like blow-em-up rock-em-sock-em movies. I think another example of this type of movie that is fun and funny is Rush Hour which Porcupine mentioned as well. In fact, a third example of a well made Hollywood action movie is the new movie of Miami Vice...that was a fun ride to be on as well. Lotsa splosions and fire. NICE.Finally, Iben...Waking Ned Divine is a great and quirky movie. Also I liked the "claw my eyes out line." You are funny!Mattypooooo
