Body: NEW to THEATERS 3/17 I Love You, Man -- Watch trailer. Aww, lok at that hug . . . That's what I want to do to Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, along with the rest of the stars (Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, and The Office's Rashida Jones). With all of those people, how can this movie go wrong? If you still think it could go wrong, I recommend you rent the exact opposite of this movie; and as far as I can tell, the exact opposite is P.S., I Love You, which stars Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank (watch trailer). Duplicity -- Watch trailer. Clive Owen and Julia Roberts are corporate spies who team up to pull off the ultimate con. Uh oh, can they trust each other??? This reminds me of the old screwball comedies with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Only I'm not so sure this is going to be as good as a Howard Hawks movie . . . Oh well, this could still entertain. (P.S., Duplicity is not a sequel to Multiplicity, which stars Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell, so if you're not in the mood for a spy movie, watch Multiplicity again (watch trailer). The Great Buck Howard (limited) -- Watch trailer. A law school dropout (Colin Hanks) becomes assistant to a has-been magician (John Malkovich). Al-riiiiiight, Emily Blunt and Steve Zahn are in it! Plus Colin Hanks' real-life dad (Tom Hanks) plays his movie dad! Sin Nombre (limited) -- Watch trailer. Two desperate Honduran teenagers try to start new lives in the US The tagline is "The greatest sin of all is risking nothing." Hey, isn't that also the tagline of Maverick starring Mel Gibson? (Watch trailer to Maverick.) Super Capers (limited) -- Watch trailer. Another B-grade superhero satire, although unlike Superhero Movie, Super Capers looks like it at least has some heart. The story: a regular guy joins a team of superheroes-in-training. During their first mission, which fails, our hero finds himself framed as the mastermind of the crime. He must clear the name of his team by finding the real villain. Some really entertaining actors fill the minor roles--Jon Polito, Tom Sizemore, Adam West, and Clint Howard (Ron's weird-looking brother)--so this might deliver some worthwhile entertainment. __________________________________________________ BONUS VIDEO: Sylvester Stallone's new muscles are lethal weapons ___________________________________________________ NEW to DVD 3/17 The Duchess -- Watch trailer. This is the kind of thing Keira Knightley is really good at: acting powerful and cute at the same time. Baby Mama -- Watch trailer. Starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler . . . which is pretty much all you need to know. FilmCouch's Kevin Buist says it's good, although it doesn't allow the two enough time to improv. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People -- Watch trailer. I've heard it's okay, but it didn't really live up to anyone's potential. Speaking of Simon Pegg movies, I've heard The Good Night is pretty good, and I'm looking forward to the sexy reincarnation of Star Trek. Faust -- Watch trailer. This 1926 silent epic from W. F. Murnau (the guy who gave us Nosferatu) looks like it's a truly mind-bending experience. Punisher: War Zone -- Watch trailer. Punisher reboot #2. I miss Dolph Lundgren; I guess you don't know what you got 'til it's gone . . .

Body: HITTING THEATERS 3/13 Disney's latest leading man: Dwayne Johnson in Race to Witch Mountain Race to Witch Mountain -- Watch trailer. This has Brendan Fraser's name written all over it, but it's starring Fraser's remake, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Of course, Brendan Fraser is a remake of Kurt Russell, and I bet that if the original Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) had starred a young, sexy hero (not the older Eddie Albert), it would've been Disney favorite Kurt Rusell (remember The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and The Strongest Man in the World?). PS - I'm mostly joking; I like Dwayne Johnson. Standing on the shoulders of Swedes: The Last House on the Left The Last House on the Left -- Watch trailer. Produced by Wes Craven, this is a remake of the Craven-directed The Last House on the Left (1972), which was kind of like Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), which is loosely based on a novel (The Siege of Trencher's Farm) but reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (1959), which was inspired by the Swedish ballad "Torres dotter i Wange," which is purportedly based on true events... The Whitest Boys U'Know: Miss March Miss March -- Watch trailer. A young guy wakes from a 4-year coma to find that his high school sweetheart gave up waiting for him to become a pin-up for Playboy. Needless to say, the guy sets out for the Playboy mansion to reclaim his old girlfriend; also needless to say, he's joined by a sex-crazed friend. LIMITED RELEASE Dirty movie: Sunshine Cleaning Sunshine Cleaning -- Watch trailer. Amy Adams plays a short-on-cash mother who's determined to send her son to a quality private school. Adams reluctantly enlists the help of her sister (Emily Blunt) to start a cleaning service that specializes in crime scene clean-up and bio-hazard removal. Is it just me, or do you pick up on an indie cash-cow vibe? I mean, could it really only be a coincidence that it's called "Sunshine" Cleaning when it's being billed as the next movie from the producers of Little Miss "Sunshine"? But ultimately, any pandering to the audience may not matter if Sunshine Cleaning is actually good. And with actors like Blunt and Adams, Alan Arkin and Steve Zahn, I've got high hopes. They ain't heavy, they's my brothers: Brothers at War Brothers at War -- Watch trailer. Documentary filmmaker Jake Rademacher's two brothers are soldiers. Jake spent three and a half years on this film, staying with four army units over two trips to Iraq, exploring his brothers' service and motivation. This very personal film appears to reveal a lot that's universal, as Rademacher seeks to understand what the soldiers in Iraq continue to experience. Dennis Quaid takes the bait: The Horsemen The Horsemen -- Watch trailer. Dennis Quaid, widowed detective, finds chilling connections between himself and the victims of a serial killer who's obsessed with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. To me, this still sounds like Se7en, Part Two. I guess whether that's a good or bad thing depends on your point of view. ________________________________________ NEW TO DVD 3/10 -- Oscar films hit the shelves Oscar alumni 1. Milk -- Watch trailer. The one Best Picture nominee that probably could've taken the laurel leaves from Slumdog Millionaire. I haven't seen it yet--I was too busy watching The Wrestler three times. 2. Der Baader Meinhof Complex -- Watch trailer. This Oscar-nominated foreign film looks really good, even considering I don't know what's happening in that intense trailer! Check it out! 3. Happy-Go-Lucky -- Watch trailer. It's considered one of the biggest snubs of the Oscars that charming star Sally Hawkins wasn't nominated for Best Actress. 4. Rachel Getting Married -- Watch trailer. FilmCouch's Kevin Buist says Anne Hathaway is great in an otherwise grating, tiring, "annoying" movie about...you guessed it: family conflicts. Huh, I guess content equals form after all. Blockbusters (and wannabes) 5. Role Models -- Watch trailer. Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott are funny together, but the film coasts way too long during the scenes of LARPing (live action role playing). 6. Transporter 3 -- Watch trailer. I haven't seen any of these yet, would you guys recommend them? I do always like Jason Statham, even when he's in bad movies. 7. Max Payne -- Watch trailer. Mark Wahlberg. Video game movie. Much stylized violence. 8. Repo! The Genetic Opera -- Watch trailer. Interesting-sounding shocker set in a future where a mysterious epidemic of organ failures turns healthy organs into a precious commodity. When organ buyers fail to make good on their payment plans, their organs must be re-possessed... 9. Saw V and Saw Goreology: Movies 1 - 5 -- Watch trailer to Saw V. It's a Saw movie, you know the drill. Hey, was that a pun? Lil' nuggets 10. Let the Right One In -- Watch trailer. Best vampire movie ever? Looks like it to me. 11. Synechdoche, New York -- Watch trailer. The Charlie Kaufman-penned film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman. I've heard the film is intellectually demanding, but I've never felt like I've wasted my time watching something written by Kaufman. 12. Battle in Seattle -- Watch trailer. This feature recounts the events of the 1999 World Trade Organization and the ensuing riots. 13. Rocker -- Watch trailer. The Office's Rainn Wilson stars as a one-time promising rocker who now, 20 years later, gets a second chance. 14. Cadillac Records -- Watch trailer. The word: good actors, good music, so-so film.

Body: HITTING THEATERS 3/6 Only one movie goes wide this Friday, but it's a doozy: Watchmen -- Watch trailer. Read the review on SpoutBlog. What do you think, will you watch the Watchmen? Will Mr. Snyder (300) blow it? I hope not; I love that frickin' book. Kevin Buist's review will show up on blog.spout.com Wednesday afternoon-ish. Who's your favorite character? I'd have to say Rorshach, although in real life I'm more like Nite Owl. :) And of course the Comedian's a creep, but he's almost as fun to read about as the Joker. Waiting eagerly for the Watchmen? Might as well have fun in the meantime; check out my new favorite short film, starring Will Ferrell and Craig Robinson: Bat Fight -- Watch it LIMITED RELEASE: 12 -- Watch trailer. Russian thriller about twelve jurors who must decide the fate of a Chechan teenager who murdered his father. From the Oscar-winning director Nikita Mikhalkov (Burnt by the Sun). This sounds like a badass, Russian version of 12 Angry Men, and that sounds fine to me. I'm interested. Tokyo! -- Watch trailer. Three directors: Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), Joon-ho Bong (The Host), and Leos Carax (The Lovers on the Bridge), offer tribute to the Japanese megacity. I'm not hearing very positive things about it, but these directors make undoubtedly interesting work. Phoebe in Wonderland -- Watch clip. This Sundance alum stars Elle Fanning (yes, of the Fanning dynasty) along with Patricia Clarkson and Felicity Huffman. Photo: Dennis Quaid at the bait shop. The Horsemen -- Watch trailer. I wouldn't blame you if you think it sounds like Se7en, Part Two. I don't know if the director Jonas Akerland is any good; anyone seen his movie Spun? ____________________________________________________________ NEW DVD's 3/3 The Warlords (Tau Ming Chong) -- Watch trailer. A Chinese/Hong Kong war epic. Set in 1870, a revolutionary army of religious fanatics rises to overthrow the corrupt Qing dynasty. Starring Jet Li, who is a good man fighting for the Qing, torn between his conscience and his honor. Sounds good to me! Australia -- Watch trailer. This film had its moments, but in my opinion, it was far too long to only have good moments. Ghost Town -- Watch trailer. Ricky Gervais can see dead people like Greg Kinnear. I heard it's alright. Beverly Hills Chihuahua -- Watch trailer. I am speechless. In the Electric Mist -- Watch trailer. A dark-looking detective film starring Tommy Lee Jones, John Goodman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ned Beatty, and Tom Sizemore; and it's adapted from a book by James Lee Burke, a masterful mystery writer. So what could go wrong? I don't know, but I don't remember this hitting theaters at all. And Stargate fans: The movies Ark of Truth and Continuum come out on a 2-disc set. Me, I'd only watch them if they star Kurt Russell.

[/quote] Dude, honestly sorry to have misled you. I was trying to "go along" with Stiller's joke, but sometimes I forget that tone doesn't come off so well in the written word. I agree that the retrospective was a little off-putting. I could tell they were trying to 'keep it fresh,' but didn't they film it in a swaying, drunken sailor rhythm? You mention how excited you were to find out Jenkins was nominated--I can relate to that. There was some real drama in rooting for my favorite actors, whether they won or lost, but I considered most of the night to be less than interesting. P.S. -- I thought Stiller's impression was pretty funny. It wasn't 'realistic' but I thought it showed good comic timing. I'll agree to disagree, since you are, after all, a professional comedian. :)

Body: I got an amusing message from a new member. They're making a CIA-themed training video, and searching for specific scenes they could use to communicate the ideas below. At first this reminded me of when my sisters asked me for help on their homework, and then I thought...it is, it's just like when my sisters asked me for help on their homework. But then I thought, I might be able to help this person make an un-boring corporate video! So here's what I came up with for these concepts. Are there any scenes you can think of? Plan strategically -- Utilize technology effectively -- Doesn't Mission Impossible I have an extended sequence where Tom Cruise uses all kinds of tools, ends up hanging from a wire, and steals a computer chip or something? Drive performance -- Accountability & Dependability -- For a counter-example, how about any of the scenes in Burn After Reading where an agent gives reports to J.K. Simmons? Communicate effectively -- Develop people -- I'm guessing this has to do with taking some time to guide or mentor a younger person. Are there any scenes like this between Sean Connery and his right hand man in Hunt for Red October? Lead strategically -- I'm thinking of the scene in Bourne Ultimatum where Matt Damon is helping the reporter (Paddy Considine) stay unseen by CIA agents. PS -- the person listed the kind of movies they had in mind: The Recruit, Mission Impossible 1-3, The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum, Enemy of the State, The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games.

Body: NEW TO THEATRES 2/20 1. Madea Goes to Jail - Watch the trailer. Until today, I thought Tyler Perry's Madea was like a kooky update of Jim Varney's Ernest P. Worrell. (Considering Ernest Goes to Jail, can you blame me?) Then I started looking into Tyler Perry, and even though I don't think his movies are for me, he seems like a really interesting guy. Two quotes from him on Wikipedia really caught my eye: 1) "I know my audience, and they're not people that the studios know anything about." 2) "Did you know you can't say 'Jesus' in a sitcom? They told me that and I was like, You gotta be kiddin' me...God has been too good to me to go and try to sell out to get some money." I was impressed to learn that Tyler Perry's been writing plays since he was 18, and according to Wikipedia, by 2005 his plays earned $75 million in ticket sales! Who knew? Madea Goes to Jail itself was a stage play in 2006, and a filmed version has already appeared on DVD. Has anyone seen that? 2. Fired Up - Watch the trailer. Teen comedy, whooooooo! Two randy football players avoid summer football camp by becoming cheerleaders. 3. Eleven Minutes (limited) - Watch the trailer. A documentary about fashion designer Jay McCarroll trying to set up an independently-produced runway show. NEW TO DVD - 2/17 1. Quarantine - Watch the trailer. This one looked pretty thrilling to me. An inner city apartment building is subjected to a government quarantine, but what's infecting the victims? 2. Body of Lies - Watch the trailer. Kevin Buist from FilmCouch saw this and didn't love it. Here's his review. 3. Choke - Watch the trailer. Kevin Buist wasn't crazy about this one either, so maybe he's just a big fuddy-duddy. Listen to his review. 4. Changeling - Watch the trailer. This was getting a lot of Oscars buzz until everyone actually saw it. Oh well, Clint Eastwood made a winner with Gran Torino. 5. High School Musical 3 - Watch the trailer. Well, I'm sure that whatever this movie's supposed to do, it does it well. Does anyone else think 'Corbin Bleu' sounds like a gourmet meal? 6. Righteous Kill - Watch the trailer. Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro are in the same movie for only the third time. Since the first two movies were Godfather Pt. II and Heat, this third time is most definitely not 'a charm.' 7. Midnight Meat Train - Watch the trailer. Here's another dose of Bradley Cooper for everyone who's crushing (or man-crushing) on him from He's Just Not That Into You. Myself, I have a bit of a man-crush on the villain, who's played by tough-as-nails Vinnie Jones. 8. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People - Watch the trailer. Simon Pegg starts working for a pompous fashion magazine. Also stars Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox, Jeff Bridges and Danny Huston -- all people I like. The movie didn't get very good reviews, though... Do you know what buildings are busiest on Friday the 13th? Tents and cabins in the wilderness. Weird, huh? The International -- Watch the trailer. I've heard some rumors that this is suprisingly good. I'm intrigued by the premise, that a large multi-national bank would use its (our) funds to support terrorists and other criminals. And hey, two winners heading the show: Naomi Watts and Clive Owen. Confessions of a Shopaholic -- Watch the trailer. Hmm. I haven't read the book, but I have bought it several times. Anyone looking forward to this? Two Lovers (limited) -- Watch the trailer. Did you know that Joaquin Phoenix has retired from acting? It's true. And now for something that's not true: Two Lovers is the first installment in a teen-fantasy-based trilogy, completed by I Beat Up the Bully In Front of Everyone and I Win The Talent Show With My Own Power Ballad. Gomorrah (limited) -- Watch the trailer. This mafia movie set in modern-day Naples won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, and its American release is sponsored by Martin Scorsese. This movie looks like it can boast authenticity from its head to its toes...three of the actors are tied to mob activity, and the author of Gomorrah (the book this is based on) has been living under 24-hour protection since the book's release. NEW TO DVD 2/10 Blindness -- Watch the trailer. Sort of like Children of Men, but is it as good? Listen to Filmcouch. Burn After Reading -- Watch the trailer. Foot Fist Way -- Watch the trailer. I liked this one a lot. Listen to the review. Frozen River -- Watch the trailer. Won Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Feature at Sundance 2008. Miracle at St. Anna -- Watch the trailer. Just a heads-up, I haven't heard one good thing about this movie. Son of Rambow -- Watch the trailer. Soul Men -- Watch the trailer. The final film performances of Isaak Hayes and Bernie Mac. W. -- Watch the trailer. Eh, it was so-so.

Body: 2/2 -- It's Groundhog Day! Well, the little bugger saw his shadow, so we're in for another six weeks of winter. But he also smelled his own breath, so we're in for some good movies before spring! Not surprisingly, the groundhog wouldn't just come out and say which movies are going to be good--but he did give some short, zen-like predictions. Check 'em out below. 1. Pink Panther 2 -- Watch the trailer. I think Steve Martin is one of the smartest and funniest comedians alive, but each of his new movies makes this a little harder to remember. Don't get me wrong, Pink Panther (2006) is decent slapstick with a handful of especially funny moments. If the sequel is any better, it'll be worth the price of admission. THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "My dandruff is really quite edible." (That means the film may seem off-putting, but is actually pretty good.) 2. He's Just Not that Into You -- Watch the trailer. This looks less like a story than An Evening of Stars Getting Together and Not Getting Together. Have you seen the mash-up video Christian Bale Is Just Not That Into You? THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "I quench my thirst with my own drool." (That means he's attracted to Jennifer Connelly, and laments that, alas, they can never be together. If you wanna have fun or just feel close to Ms. Conelly, Recast DARK CITY.) 3. Fanboys -- Watch the trailer. This movie started a brawl between the badasses of Star Wars and Star Trek. Vote for your favorite characters to help them survive the brawl. Fanboys has been hanging around since 2007, so I'm kind of wary. Nevertheless, it's full of good people (Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler, and Kristin Bell in Princess Leia's golden bikini, yikes!) THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "These darn saddle sores just won't heal!" (He's tired of all the delays, and hopes the film lives up to his expectations. It also means, would I please hand him my lip balm so he can give some relief to his rump?) 4. Coraline -- Watch the trailer. I've read the book by Neil Gaiman and it's pretty good, sort of Alice In Wonderland meets The Nightmare Before Christmas. Hey, that's what the trailer looks like, too! THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "Does a Coal Monster poop diamonds?" (This must be some kind of stock phrase among groundhogs. Do any of you know what it means?) 5. Push -- Watch the trailer. The director of this thriller made Lucky Number Slevin, which was pretty good. On the other hand... THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "I have blood in my stool." (This is far too vulgar to translate, and he knows better. I kick him lightly in the saddlesores and he scurries back into his hole.) ________________________________________________ NEW TO DVD 2/3 There are a bunch of Friday the 13th special editions coming out, some on Blu-ray. I was thinking about seeing the new Friday the 13th next Friday, but then my appetite for slasher films was ruined by the horrid My Bloody Valentine 3-D. 1. Zack and Miri Make a Porno -- Watch the trailer. Since it stars those two delightful cats--Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks--I'm surprised it bombed so bad in the theater. I haven't seen this yet; any opinions on whether it deserves a look? 2. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist -- Watch the trailer. Don't you just wanna pinch Michael Cera's cheeks? 3. Redbelt -- Watch the trailer. A good but flawed film from David Mamet about honor (and the lack thereof) among professional Tae Kwon Do competitors. I learned from this film that the only belt higher than blackbelt is redbelt...and if I'm not mistaken, there's only one Redbelt at a time. 4. Bottle Shock -- Watch the trailer. Starring Bill Pullman and the superb Alan Rickman, this comedy-drama's set in 1976, within the world of wine-making and wine-tasting. If you've ever been to a wine-tasting, you know there's plenty to make fun of there. The best comments I've ever heard at a wine-tasting. I'm not making these up: (1) It's a bit austere in the mid-nose. (2) Ooh, I'm almost sensing a bit of effervescence that isn't really there! 5. The Secret Life of Bees -- Watch the trailer. Wow, that Dakota Fanning is everywhere these days. Yesterday I saw Dakota down at the DMV, trying to get her driver's license. I'm like, "What do you need that for?" And she's like, "I'm not gonna drive! They're just photographing me! My agent made this deal so that my picture goes on every new photo ID in America." Just an FYI, if you're going to get a license or passport. 6. Assault on Precint 13 (re-release) -- This is one John Carpenter classic I haven't seen. Any opinions of it? 7. Being There (re-release) -- Watch the trailer. I'm a fan of Peter Sellers, but I haven't seen this one. By the way, we're giving it away. Find out how to win.

Body: NEW DVD's 1/27 1. RocknRolla -- Watch the trailer. RocknRolla made people say "Guy Ritchie is back," but when I recently watched Snatch I was surprised at how dated it felt. By contrast, RocknRolla seemed surprising, even as I recognized some of the trademark Richie-isms in the soundtrack choices and cinematography. I recommend this one, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. 2. Vicky Cristina Barcelona -- Watch the trailer. Most of the buzz around this Woody Allen film stemmed from the make-out scene between Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz. But hey, it's Woody Allen, who once in a while he still puts together a really good movie (i.e. Match Point). Is VCB good? I haven't seen it. 3. Pride & Glory -- Watch the trailer. You've heard that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link? Well, this film has Ed Norton, Colin Farrell, and Jon Voight, and it's only as good as Jon Voight. 4. College -- Do not watch the trailer. Do not watch the movie. 5. Fireproof -- Watch the trailer. Something of a rarity, since it was produced by a Christian church and still received a wide release. Stars Kirk Cameron, as a fireman for whom it's easier to risk his life saving people than it is to work at his failing marriage. 6. Lakeview Terrace -- Watch the trailer. Samuel L. Jackson plays a psycho cop who's got an irrational beef with his neighbors, Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington. 7. The Lucky Ones -- Tim Robbins, Rachel McAdams and Michael Pena are Iraq veterans on a US road trip. 8. Zodiac -- Watch the trailer. The one David Fincher made before The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The one about the 1970s Zodiac killer. The one that was far too long and only so-so. Re-releases 1. Groundhog Day (1993) -- Watch the trailer. I watch this once a year around February 2. This is the "Anniversary Edition," commemorating the...16th anniversary? Hey, how many years of Feb. 2 do you think Phil lived through? Sixteen years? Less? More? 2. The Bourne Trilogy -- A couple weeks ago, I was asking a friend if he thought Underworld 3 would be the best of the series, and he said, "When was the last time any part three was the best?" I suggest to you: The Bourne Ultimatum. 3. Pink Panther Film Collection -- Includes A Shot in the Dark (1964), Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), Curse of the Pink Panther (1983), and Son of the Pink Panther (1993). I hadn't seen A Shot in the Dark until the first Steve Martin Pink Panther came out, and I was surprised at how little Peter Sellers is onscreen! I haven't seen any of the later films; anyone have favorites to recommend? 4. The Stewardesses, Deluxe Edition -- Watch the trailer. Body: Finally The Wrestler is in wide release, and it is fantastic! I will not soon forget it. (Watch the trailer.) FilmCouch will discuss it this Friday. Taken -- Watch the trailer. I was wary of this film until I saw this tougher-than-nails trailer, where Liam Neeson gives a monologue as hard as anything ever put on film. The story: Neeson plays a former spy who will stop at nothing to save his teenage daughter from her captors. The criminals do not want ransom; they want to turn her into a sex slave. I'm excited to see it, but I wonder how it handles the modern problem of the sex-slave trade? Will Taken just exploit modern slavery to put a new twist on the old "they took my daughter" action plot? (For example, Arnold Swarzenegger's Commando.) The Class -- Watch the trailer. We might think we've seen this before, but I think we'd be wrong. A teacher struggles to meaningfully teach an ethnically diverse group of rough-and-tumble high schoolers...and the trailer makes it look like it's way more than a French Freedom Writers! Based on a novel by Francois Begaudeau, who also stars as Mr. Marin, essentially playing a version of himsef. It won the Palm d'Or at Cannes, and I'm really looking forward to it. The Uninvited -- Watch the trailer. A girl's mother returns from the dead to warn her about her father's new fiancee. The father is played by the excellent David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, Bourne Ultimatum); his creepy new fiancee (who was nurse to his late wife) is played by the lovely Elizabeth Banks. It's a remake of the Korean horror flick Tale of Two Sisters. Has anyone seen it? (Here's the trailer.) It looks like the rare movie where the remake could be better than the original. New in Town -- Watch the trailer. Big-city Renee Zellweger gets a huge dose of culture shock when she's sent to a small Minnesota town to supervise a manufacturing plant's "restructuring." It's full of talented and likable actors: Nathan Fillion, Harry Connick Jr., and J.K. Simmons (Burn After Reading, Juno, Thank You for Smoking). But even if it's good, do you think this Neo-Great Depression flick will connect with audiences? I thought during the Great Depression people wanted to escape to movies that weren't about hard times? So, ladies and gentlemen, unless all the king's horses and all the king's men go to see New in Town, it looks like Paul Blart will remain the number one comedy in America for another week. Will Pink Panther 2 unseat the champ?

The Deal -- Watch the trailer. Meg Ryan and William H. Macy star in what sounds like Get Shorty meets The Producers. 4. Criteron Collection's El Norte (1983) is now on Blu-ray. When the Guatemalan government destroys a village of Quiche Indians, two teenagers trek north across Mexico and into the US. Watch th trailer. 5. Saw V -- Watch the trailer. Anyone care to bet how many more sequels will be made? 6. The Express -- Watch the trailer. The story of the Heisman-trophy winning footbal star, Ernie Davis, who was diagnosed with leukemia shortly after being drafted into the NFL. 7. Max Payne -- Watch the trailer. Mark Wahlberg is better than this movie. Hmm, what's the best video game movie ever? Is anyone looking forward to Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li? (Watch the trailer.)

Body: 1. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans -- Watch the trailer. In the much-awaited sequel Underwear: Rise of the Lycra, we learn that a wicked wedgie has taken the life of Kate Beckinsale. Replacing Beckinsale is Rhona Mitra, one of the toughest chicks I've ever seen in film. (Fans of post-apocalyptic horror should check out Neil Marshal's Doomsday. Watch the trailer.) Fleshing out the cast are Martin Sheen and the excellent Bill Nighy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Valkyrie). Nighy gave a hint about his role at the Comic-Con preview: "I’m a vampire, I’m a zombie, and I’m a squid. How many people do you know who can make that claim?" I don't know, but I've eaten those three kinds of meat at one sitting. How many can make that claim? Rise of the Lycra was preceded by Underwear: Elle Macpherson (watch trailer) and the original Underwear (watch trailer). Now, onto the next movie: 2. Inkheart -- Watch the trailer. Hey, speaking of Brendan Fraser, recast Encino Man to win a t-shirt. 3. Killshot -- Watch the trailer. What's more mysterious: when untalented people make a good film, or when talented people make a bad film? Since Killshot's release was bumped five times and was almost a direct-to-DVD release, it seems producer Harvey Weinstein just wants the film to go away. Read more. Still, there might be some potential here since it came from an Elmore Leonard novel. 4. Outlander (limited release) -- Watch the trailer. Wow, Vikings vs. aliens! I want this to be good, but since it's another film that Harvey Weinstein wanted to disappear, it's probably not. And darn it, why do they have to show the monster in the trailer? Outlander looks about as good as Pathfinder (2007), which was Vikings vs. Native Americans, or The 13th Warrior, which was Vikings vs. a Middle Eastern scholar. What kind of Viking match-ups would you like to see? How about Vikings vs. Predator? P.S., I really dug that Vikings vs. Tomb Raider movie, Beowulf (2006).
