If you are a member of this group, you love everything about the Super Bowl of movies, especially the movies themselves! You love to make predictions, guess at the politics, discuss and dissect who should have been nominated and who should have won...or, you're just an avid movie lover that likes to pay attention. Group Name: Movies we do not want to see - Try to convince us to see these movies!
Group Description: Want to be a member? Send me a message with a list of at least 5 movies that you do not want to see.

There are many movies that I do not want to see. I'm not sure if its right of me to decide never to see a movie without seeing it. You know...like when a kid says they hate mushrooms even though they admit never trying them. So maybe this is a good spot for people to display movies they don't think they want to see, and see if anyone can convince us to try them out.
Body: I'll cheat a bit here and throw out the forthcoming movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road". I've only read the book, obviously, but it had me reaching for an extra dose of Wellbutrin every 50 pages or so. I expect the film to be every bit as bleak and realistic under John Hillcoat's direction. It may even beat out "Mall Cop" as the most depressing film of 2009.
Body: 1. Rachel Getting Married I'm just thrilled that Ross and Rachel finally get to tie the knot. And on the big screen, no less! I gotta say I just love that Jennifer Aniston. She is such a trooper. I still can't believe Brad ran off with that other one. You know, what's-her-name...Jon Voight's daughter. Of course, he was in that "Midnight Cowboy", and THAT thing was pure filth. 2. Synecdoche, New York Sigh-neck-do- what? 3. Milk You know your cousin Andrea is gay. So is that nice looking Italian man she brought to the wedding. Aunt Barbara kept bragging the whole time about how he was quite a catch. Well, let me tell ya! 4. Reprise Again with the subtitles? You know I can't read that fast. 5. The Wrestler That reminds me. All of those little pink wrestling dolls you used to play with need to come out of my basement. Seriously, or they're going to the Goodwill. I have a hard enough time with your father and that beer making set he hasn't used in 20 years.
Win a DVD box set worth up to $75. You choose the box set! That's right, winners pick any DVD box set for $75 or less, then we buy it and ship it for free. Here's how you play: 1) Reply with a list of your 5 Favorite Movies of 2008. 2) Tell us what your mother would say about each movie. We're not looking for whole reviews, just one or two sentences. EXAMPLE: 1) The Dark Knight -- "You know, I wouldn't have minded if Batman killed the Joker. That guy was just...blech!" Check back here on 12/31 to see if you've won! Good luck, and happy holidays!
Body: Juliet Loves Romeo (The late-70s all-star comedy version) One of my most loved movie gimmicks from the late-70s/early-80s was the all star cast tie-in. Anyone who remembers that era may recall seeing a poster; usually with an overly-busy cartoon drawing and block pictures of various celebrities around the periphery, advertising one of these filmic gems. The celebrities involved ran the gamut from faded stars of yesteryear (Orson Welles, George Burns) to musicians (Elvis Costello, Meat Loaf) to comedians (Steve Martin, Rodney Dangerfield) to sports stars (Tommy LaSorda). There was also a whole lot of Tony Randall. Granted, most of these celebrities usually appeared on-screen for no more than 2-minutes, but spotting them was supposed to be “part of the fun.”. It was also intended to distract you from the usually moribund task of actually sitting through the movie. So, let’s rewind about 17 years, send Baz Luhrman and his transluscent butterfly wings packing, throw Neal Israel behind the camera, and recast this b*tch like it’s 1979. (Note: for further reference, see films such as “Americathon”, “The Muppet Movie”,”Sgt. Body: Depressing Holiday films: Metropolitan Christmas A comedy of manners about the late-80s debutante ball circuit would hardly seem to qualify as bleak material, but one scene, in particular, has always stuck in my memory. The film largely takes place in the penthouses and ballrooms of upper Manhattan. At one point, though, the bookish and out-of-place Audrey is seen simply walking the city streets amid the bustling Christmas tide. We sense in her a kind of sorrow. She’s trapped in a world of sniveling upper-crust brats, and yet she desperately wants to find a connection in the world from which she’s been cloistered. This is why she falls for the faux-proletarian Charley and why she ventures out alone in search of everyday experience. Whit Stillman (the director) never puts a heavy point on this. He simply lays out the scene for us to experience. Brilliant stuff. Brokeback Mountain Fourth of July Enis stares pensively at a small town fireworks display with his back turned to the camera. While the flashing bombs in the sky provide an easy metaphor for his inner turmoil, we also experience, through him, a corner of America where the veneer of patriotism hides a brutal and unforgiving cultural landscape. Forrest Gump New Years 1972 The look on Lt. Dan’s face says it all. Rocky Thanksgiving I gotta say: poor Adrian! She spends all day cooking a turkey for her drunkard of a brother, and how does he thank her? By throwing it out the window! She then goes to an empty ice rink with a blockheaded amateur-circuit boxer and is cajoled into spending the night at his depressing apartment. She ends up getting married to this guy. She almost dies in childbirth. She gets sexually harassed by Mr. T. Her husband gains a fortune and buys her a hideous snake watch. The fortune is squandered (again, the brother). And, to top it off, she dies mysteriously. Worst Thanksgiving EVER! The Passion of the Christ Good Friday Relax, Jesus. Mel Gibson really does love you. He just has his own special way of showing it.
Back to the Future - Anyone who has seen "Son of Rambow" knows the impact that a movie character can have on an impressionable youth (especially one with an over-active imagination). For a brief period in 1985-86, I WAS Marty McFly. I actually had designs on riding my skateboard to school every day by tailgating cars. Then (in typical 1980s fashion) there was a story about some kid who died trying the same thing. Back to the Future (1985)). 2. Rocky IV - This one embodied every cliche about bad 80s cinema: synth-driven montage scenes, cold war paranoia, Reagan-era hyper-patriotism, and a bizarre obsession with the titilating possibilities of robotic technology. I ate up every morsel of it. Heck, I probably had every line of dialogue memorized for awhile.Rocky IV (1985) 3. Down and Out in Beverly Hills/Ruthless People- For awhile there in the mid-80s, I couldn't get enough of the Bette Midler screwball comedies. My best friend's mom is befuddled to this day that I grew up to be straight.Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) Ruthless People (1986) 4. Superman II - One of my first moviegoing memories. To this day, Terrence Stamp scares the living sh** out of me.Superman II (1980) 5. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - This one also belongs on my personal "having divorced parents is not without benefits" list. My mom adamently refused to take me to this movie; citing its violence and demonic themes. My dad was none the wiser and even bought me the vintage hat and whip toy set after we saw it. You can imagine the heated phone call that ensued. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Body: I'm not brave enough to recast "High Fidelity". I don't dance that close to the sun. Instead, I'll offer up two of my own top 5 lists. The first, you might say, is in honor of Louis, the cool customer....Top 5 "Hey, you know what this film really needs? A black guy!" characters (The Winston memorial list): 5. James Smith (Glen Plummer) - Showgirls 4. Ron Clifford (Sean Patrick Thomas) - Cruel Intentions 3. Hollywood Montrose (Meschach Taylor) - Mannequin 2. Solomon (Ernie Hudson) - The Hand That Rocks The Cradle 1. Petty Officer Doris Miller (Cuba Gooding) - Pearl Harbor And, tangentially related to the first, I present.... Top 5 Least Convincing Gay Performances (The Kevin Kline Lifetime Achievement List) 5. Mike Myers, 54 4. Joshua Jackson, Cruel Intentions 3. Robin Williams, The Birdcage 2. Body: 1. Casablanca - To be fair, I'm don't hate this film. I'm just very lukewarm on it. I can name at least two performances from Bogart, Bergman, and Lorre that I prefer over what they delivered here. 2. Rio Bravo/The Searchers - I don't get it. I don't get the appeal of John Wayne. Never have. And, believe me, my inner- cinephilic voice tells me this is an outrage. His style of acting just grates on me. 3. Braveheart - There are not enough words in the english language to describe my hatred of this film., but here are a few -- overblown, overacted, histrionic, cliched, homophobic, cacophonous, dystopic, arrogant, boorish, sloppy, blugeoning, Manachean, stupid, stupid, stupid. 4. Moulin Rouge- take a bunch of FM-Lite pop songs, set them to really campy music, and then have them sung by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Sounds like a winning formula......for me to poop on. 5. The Aviator- really just a stand-in for every Leo DiCraprio film I've seen (exception: "The Departed"). This one takes the cake, though, because Scorcese really seems to be on auto-pilot. It seems like he's intent on channeling Jake LaMotta, Henry Hill and Travis Bickle rather than telling the story of Howard Hughes, who should be a compelling enough subject in his own right.
Body: In no particular order: - The Quiet Earth- an 80s-knock off of "The Omega Man". For you trivia buffs, this was the film that launched Bruno Lawrence into the realm of A-list superstardomThe Quiet Earth (1985). - The Day After - creepiest film I've ever seen. I'll watch "The Exorcist" again before I sit through this. The Day After (1983) - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome- If you were in elementary school around 1985, there was a good chance you teamed up with a bigger or smaller kid on the playground and referred to yourselves collectively as "Master & Blaster" Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) - Solarbabies - Has anyone watched this recently? After "American Anthem", may be the best unintentional comedy of the era. And, only in the 80s would the two lead characters in a movie be named Grock and Jason.Solarbabies (1986) - Night of the Comet- Another candidate for the latter group. Catherine Mary Stewart was a goddess!Best line: Daddy would have gotten us Uzis! Night of the Comet (1984)
Body: Given the renewed confidence among rightwingers after John McCain’s recent bump in the polls, our mission today is to imagine a version of the Big Lebowski that is funded and cast entirely by the Republican National Committee. The cast list, of course, includes only conservative-leaning actors. It goes without saying that Jerry Bruckheimer would produce and Mel Gibson would direct, but a few other housekeeping items are in order: · As much as we’d like to keep the bowling sequences in an effort to appeal to blue collar audiences, we were unable to find a Hollywood Republican who could match even Barack Obama’s bowling score. It has to be golf. · The setting would need to move from the liberal cesspool of the Valley down to the friendlier confines of Orange County. · Those German nihilists would, in fact, need to be a dangerous band of Socialist thugs, who once put out a pro-Sandinista album in the early-80s. · “The Dude” has too much of a proto-hippie ring to it. Body: Since no one has done it yet, I couldn't resist offering up an exerpt from a Charlie Rose interview with Yoda: CHARLIE ROSE: Welcome to the broadcast. Tonight...a searing indictment on the rise of imperial hegemony and the complacency of the galactic Senate. A full hour with Jedi Master Yoda and his new book, "Begun These Clone Wars Have". Master Yoda, welcome back to the program. YODA: To see you, great as always, Charlie. CHARLIE ROSE: Now, let's get right to the point, is the Galactic Republic facing a constitutional crisis? YODA: .No doubt there is of that. CHARLIE ROSE: Now you...and let's be frank about this, you contend...in your book....that the recent concentration of power in the Imperial branch, coupled with a stunning surge in military spending, has signaled quote a "secession of authority so gross that it threatens to tear asunder the delicate power balance undergirding inter-galactic governance"... a pretty bold claim. YODA: Given in to fear, the Senate has... and empty rhetoric. CHARLIE ROSE: Now what do you mean by that? YODA: A dangerous organization, the Separatist Confederacy is, let no doubt there be about that. However, moral authority in the galaxy we have ceded. Diplomatic relations with those who may not hold our views, we have been unwilling to undertake. CHARLIE ROSE: But, and here's the main counter-argument....did you yourself not dispense two of your own Jedi to solve a trade dispute at the outset of this conflict? And did that not end badly? YODA: The full threat we did not understand at the time. A more transparent process required of us there was. CHARLIE ROSE: More transparent? YODA: Our perception across the galaxy, we must be sensitive to. CHARLIE ROSE: As Jedi? YODA: As Jedi, yes, but also as defenders of the galatic order. CHARLIE ROSE: So, what do you consider yourself? A pragmatist? An ethical realist? YODA: From no one school of thought, do I come from.
YODA: From no one school of thought, do I come from.</spout:body>

Body: “Max Rebo: Black and White Night” A special that runs during every pledge drive on “PBS Tatooine”. It features the legendary Rebo; along with Droopy McCool, Sny Snoodles and a cavalcade of stars from across the galaxy, playing some of his greatest hits for an audience of aging Hutts. Sadly, less than a year after filming this concert, Rebo would die of gluttony; making this show all the more poignant and memorable. A DVD of the performance can be obtained at the "Han Solo in carbonite" donation level. Roy Orbison: Black & White Night (1987)
