If you are a member of this group, you love everything about the Super Bowl of movies, especially the movies themselves! You love to make predictions, guess at the politics, discuss and dissect who should have been nominated and who should have won...or, you're just an avid movie lover that likes to pay attention. Group Name: Movies we do not want to see - Try to convince us to see these movies!
Group Description: Want to be a member? Send me a message with a list of at least 5 movies that you do not want to see.

There are many movies that I do not want to see. I'm not sure if its right of me to decide never to see a movie without seeing it. You know...like when a kid says they hate mushrooms even though they admit never trying them. So maybe this is a good spot for people to display movies they don't think they want to see, and see if anyone can convince us to try them out.
Body:
I don't think there's much to think about here, in my opinion. Shyamalan (or as my mother likes to call him, "shyamalama-ding-dong") had already outstayed his welcome when "Lady in the Water" came out (anyone else see the lame accompanying picture book?), and "The Happening" was just a joke. It seems this guy thinks he's the next great director--I guess all that buzz about Hitchcock that came out around "The Sixth Sense" went to his head about as fast as a hit of heroin--and, actually, I think this may be the case. However, I wouldn't compare him to Hitchcock. Not in the least. If anything, this guy is a George Lucas. He's got concepts, yes, as well as a good visual sense. But can he write? No. Can he accept the fact that he can't write? No. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Abby, I couldn't agree more. I would add that his "style" is self-replicating. He doesn't bother exploring, only allows himself to keep doing the same damn thing he did last time. But he's running out of ideas. Regarding his plot twists, the fact that it has become a trademark, the fact that we as the audience expect them to happen, give an overtone of condescension. It's like he's holding it over our heads that he knows something we don't, and it's gotten to the point where even watching a trailer for a Shyamalan movie makes you feel like you're stupid for not getting the twist. By extension, if you don't like the movie, then you just don't "get" it. This makes his movies (which are pretty difficult to like to begin with) even harder to enjoy. That and the gaping plot holes. [obligatory]Yes, we're aliens who are allergic to water, and it's quite likely that we're only here on Earth to consume its resources because we've already consumed all of our own, so we chose to come to this planet whose most abundant resource is water, so that we could die naturally just standing around in humidity.[/obligatory] In brief, Shyamalan's a hack, always has been, always will be. None of his movies have blown me away just yet (though his first two popular ones were bearable), and I would be flat-out stunned if any future movie of his ever did.
Body:
Hm, so many of the ones I would pick have already been picked. Theres a few notables missing, however. One of the all-time weirdest: The Fountain Darren Aronofsky (sp?) at his weirdest. I would try to explain it, but I'm not sure I can anymore. If you're interested, I reviewed it here. Requiem for a Dream Same director as Pi and the Fountain. The really trippy drug induced fantasies and hallucinations, plus the steady downward spiral of all the characters in this film make it a weird one. Fantasia Satan. Mickey Mouse. Pluto. Wizards. Demons. Nuff said. Me and You and Everyone We Know I saw this one twice and still can't really figure out quite what it is about. I've heard a wide range of theories. All I know is there is a 5 year old making out with a 35 year old woman, and he's obsessed with 'pooping back and forth forever'. Is it a metaphor? Is it funny? I don't really know. Stranger than Fiction / The Science of Sleep I don't know why, but I always think of these films together. Anyways, I think they both should be included on any 'weird' list. Both have pretty strange concepts that seem like they wouldn't work/be that interesting, but somehow both of them turned out to be good films--a big compliment to STF considering I don't like Will Ferrel as a rule of thumb. Both will definately mess with your mind a bit.
It's been ages since I've seen Fantasia, but I will vouch for The Science of Sleep and Me and You and Everyone We Know for being weird. Science of Sleep is such an amazing movie. Another thread around here somewhere spoke of Amelie as being a "gateway drug" to other foreign flicks. My brother has always adamently refused to watch foreign movies on the basis that he doesn't like to "read his movies." But he caught the last half of Science of Sleep and loved it. Something about how they keep switching between three languages for the entire film has this whirlwind effect that just sucks you up and moves you through the narrative, even when it's not so narrativey. Stranger Than Fiction is a pretty good metafiction film, but as far as metafiction is concerned, I have to offer up a couple of Michael Haneke films, Cache and Funny Games. While neither of these movies might be considered "weird," they have a fourth-wall-breaking aspect that your average film doesn't. And that's the understatement of the century. Cache has some disturbing imagery at one point, which seems more gruesome than that of Funny Games, even though Funny Games is far gorier. I think it has something to do with the way Funny Games incorporates its violence, the way that the "bad guys" let you, the audience, know that you know what these games are all about, and you're used to it by now. It's quite convincing, which I guess is the true horror of the film.
Body: Haven't been to Spout in ages. I should get back into this. I always had fun before... Anyway... My vote goes to Lost in Translation. Murray is perfect here. Spot on. And it was this movie in which he showed his amazing talent for dramatic acting. It blends with his comedy so well. This movie shows how love really works, and it's one of my all-time favorites. Runner up goes to Broken Flowers, but The Life Aquatic is one of those movies (along with everything else Wes Anderson has done except for Bottle Rocket) that I just can't like, no matter how much I try.
I guess there's always Google Image Search, but I don't know how they capture the individual frames (unless they take them from their DVDs).As far as your movie goes, I haven't a clue what movie that is. I enjoyed this movie for what it was. my one problem..... I have noticed more frequently in films that "faith-based" or "christian" characters are being used as villians in films. the mist(christian), the golden compass(faith-based), and now this film jumper(christian). maybe I just didnt notice it before or maybe it is becoming more common. either way I am growing tired of this 'trend' and am hoping to see more films with faith based heroes or christian heroes. Finally I am sure there are films with heroes of the type I would like to see. I may just be going to see the wrong movies." jbozzz immediately responded: art imitates life I haven't seen Jumper, but I'm curiously half-interested in it, mostly, I think, because it's based on a book (which I haven't read), so at least it's not something fabricated by dollar-driven, explosion-fascinated Hollywood types. I know nothing about the book or author, so I have no idea if it was written by a dollar-driven, explosion-fascinated author. At any rate, I found this conversation interesting. What is it with Hollywood lately. (S)He cites three movies: The Mist (can't find a link) - I enjoyed this movie a lot and thought that the Christian portrayed negatively (Ms. Carmady) was actually a very exaggerated character meant to show not how evil Christians are, but how easily people turn to a prophet (false or otherwise) when faced with trial. You turn to the unknown to face the unknown. The Golden Compass - I thought somewhat less of this movie. In fact, I pretty well hated it, but I can give the book some credit (haven't read His Dark Materials, but the movie hints that the book is deeper and more meaningful). The Christians therein aren't specifically Christians, but a collective metaphor for Catholicism (my interpretation), so Catholics are negatively displayed. This is a recent trend, but can you blame the trend-setters when the leaders of the faith have been factually shown to be so off-base (see Deliver Us from Evil, the first movie to make me cry in many years)? Jumper - I can't comment on this since I haven't seen it. But the writer seems to be ignoring some pretty obvious and even genre-related films that have come out recently as well, like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Clearly this is a pro-Christian film whose source material has largely been analyzed as such. What do you think? Is minionembraced on target or is jbozzz? Or both?
Body: I know I already posted my initial five, but I've come up with four more that make my cut.Two scenes in particular from Big Fish stand out to me. First, when Ewan McGregor's wife thinks he's died in the war, since the men in the army vehicle told her he went MIA, and then his sillhoette (sp?) appear behind the sheets being hung out to dry and out walks Ewan McGregor. This is the result of a combination of an excellently-told story and Danny Elfman's tremendous score. At the end of the same movie (and I think this one's been mentioned already), when Billy Crudup tells Albert Finney the story of how he dies and you get that he finally understands his father in those final minutes of Finney's life.Next, in Stand By Me, River Pheonix tells the story of how he was punished for stealing the class's milk money when it was really the cafeteria lady who did it, knowing full well all the blame would fall on River because of his family's reputation. Classic, and it makes you really feel bad for every kid that was ever "known" to come from a bad family. Finally, I recently watched the documentary Deliver Us from Evil. I don't know whether to recommend this movie to people or not. It's an excellently made film, but it's so disturbing that I'm not sure I would tell somebody, "You've GOT to see this." The offending priest in question seems to think that by confessing (and not for the first time) that he has commited some of the worst acts against humanity you could ever hear about, he will somehow be saved. He tells some of the sickest stories you've ever heard and then smile. And then while you're crying over the priest's actions and feeling sorry for his victims, you wonder what the victims are doing as they watch the movie and see his reactions in the present. I barely made it through this movie. I don't know how they could possibly get halfway.
I don't know how they could possibly get halfway.</spout:body>

Body: Now it's my turn to blaspheme. But before I go there, let me say that I agree on the point of Vertigo. I couldn't even make it through the movie once, but I'm determined to do so before I die, fully realizing that I have no valid argument against any movie until I've actually watched it.And allow me to defend Eternal Sunshine, one of my all-time faves and the comment that was made about it being all gimmick (or magic tricks, I think it was called) and no coherent storyline. I would offer up the idea that the rush-rush pulling and pushing from one whacked-out set to another is an essential part of the storytelling. For the bulk of the movie, we're actually inside Joel Barish's mind, which is being changed and erased as the story unfolds. Here's a couple:The Godfather -- I just don't see what everyone else sees. I actually find this movie to be boring. Maybe it's just because it's been built up, or maybe its because I knew in advance that Mario Puzo (the author of the novel the movie's based on) wrote the novel with no intent of making a meaningful story, just something he could sell. And wouldn't you know it? You all bought it.Mission: Impossible 3 -- Maybe I'm misinformed here, but it seems like all the critics really liked this movie. Everyone I've ever spoken to likes it. But I thought that it was so friggin contrived and a repeat story! It may not be the exact same story as the first M:I, but it's got the same plot twists and everything. Corruption in the force, renegade bad guy. About the only thing that was different was the macguffin, and that should have been left to Hitchcock.
Body: I agree with pippin06 on the vast majority of his points.I kinda see Shyamalan as the new Joel Schumacher. Shall we compare?Schumacher's Flatliners -- A fun movie with an eye for grandiosity about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. It turns into a sort of horror flick with heart as the film wears on. The characters find themselves haunted by the horrors they've commited themselves, but find redemption in the act of apology.Compare to Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense -- A really fun movie with a focus on the individual about death and the afterlife, whatever it is. In the end it's remembered as a horror film, but it has a sort of heart as well. A small child brings realization to a middle-aged man who never realized he'd actually passed away, and brings a sort of redemption to his mother who always doubted her own mother.Schumacher's The Lost Boys -- This makes for one hell of a popcorn flick and it's got a popular cast: The Two Coreys (as they are called) and the slightly less popular but still recognizable Diane Weist. It's a stupid movie with very little purpose.Compare to Shyamalan's The Village -- I found the movie to be entertaining, if a little predictable (or a lot predictable) with a few cast members who'd been getting a fair amount of press at the time like Adrien Brody. The movie didn't really have anything new to say. You know, it's all about how man cannot suppress his very nature of hostility and how any society has always crumbled from the Greeks to the Romans to maybe America? It's also a stupid movie with very little purpose, but that's all The Lost Boys or The Village were ever really meant to be.One more: Schumacher's Batman Forever. Stop cringing. It does you no good. Batman Forever was a cheap attempt to capitalize on a successful franchise. The movie made good money, I'm sure, but it's generally regarded as the second worst Batman movie to date (the worst being Batman and Robin). Then look at Shyamalan's Lady in the Water. Again with Paul Giamatti, good actor that he is, in a role that makes him look childish. In a way it's a continuation of a franchise because that's how it was advertised. The wording in the trailer is probably close to, "An M. Night Shyamalan Film." People went to see it because he directed. In a way, it's a franchise. But it's not a very good movie in any way, shape, or form.I see a lot of commonalities between the two, and I think we just need to watch Shyamalan's films for the entertainment value and overlook his frequent plot holes, his trademark plot twists, and his hack style. I can watch his movies just for fun in the same way that I can't say no to a viewing of The Lost Boys.
Body: Joem, I gotta admit, I'm pretty stumped here. Your plot synopsis could be the one of a movie I've never seen, or it could be the one of a hundred movies I've seen. I can't get much out of the actors' initials (my mind just doesn't think that way). Could I be the first loser of my own game?
Body: I waited for my local Blockbuster's single copy of this film to come back in stock so I could watch it. I had extremely high hopes for Renaissance. I am a fanatic for good science fiction and the visual style thrilled me just watching the trailer.I wish I could say the movie is as action-packed as the trailer makes it out to be. This isn't the Matrix, though it is clearly heavily influenced by it. There are also traces of Blade Runner here, with a noirish style. That's not to say the story isn't original. It's very entertaining, but I couldn't decide whether the movie was a calculated attempt at making us see the fallacy of beauty and immortality or a roller coaster of thrills. The visual style is amazing, however. With the exception of the lip-syncing, I have never before seen computer generated animation bring such life-like movement to human characters. The strong, black-and-white coloring removes the texture from things that usually end up making real life hard to create on a computer, like skin and hair. What you end up with instead is something that doesn't try to pretend it's not animation. There is almost no gray in the picture. The only such color comes in reflections. This seems, though, that it would have been a style of filmmaking better suited for a movie like Equilibrium. There it would have realized the severe contrast between people with emotions and their oppressors. Here, there are no two specific sides. An overwhelming corporation bent on bringing beauty to the masses becomes the backdrop for a plot about Barthelemy Karas, a tough cop, tracks down a kidnapped woman and stumbles upon a corporate scheme, a puzzle whose pieces have been scattered and hidden well. The plot is actually rather simple, but both my wife and I found ourselves vaguely confused since you are given no introduction whatsoever or even clues as to what characters are talking about. I can't remember character names, mostly because the characters whose names are said frequently (aside from Ilona, the kidnapped woman) get killed off in rapid succession. By the end of the movie, of course, everything makes sense. I was a little underwhelmed to discover the simplicty of the story after I had found myself so confused.I still can't not recommend this movie. It's great entertainment and the film is a wonder to watch, even if only for its pure aesthetic value. And if you like the Matrix and Blade Runner, you'll probably like Renaissance a whole lot and even recommend it to others.
Body: The rules here are simple. I'll provide a movie plot and several scrambled letters. The letters will be the initials of three actors who were in that movie. But they won't be in any kind of order. You are to put them in order and provide both the title of the movie and the three actors' names. Whoever gets it right does one of their own.Example: An unsuspecting twenty-something becomes involved in a sinister plot when he recieves a random phone call from a kidnapped woman. Letters - WKBECHM. Body: Convince you, tmoney? To watch Empire Records? I'll take you up on that challenge. It may actually be one of the most quotable movies of all time. For instance, "It's Rex Manning day!" "His name's not fucking Warren!" "I wonder if I'll be held responsible for this?"With the exception of "Till I Hear It From You" by Gin Blossoms, it's got a great 90's rock soundtrack.A mostly amazing cast includes that guy who played Slater in Dazed and Confused, that guy who looks like Corey Haim did in Lost Boys but isn't, that guy who was on that TV show on the USA network about the FBI, Renee Zellweger (sp?), Robin Tunney, and apparently you have a problem with Liv Tyler. Regardless of name, everyone plays the part to perfection. It's funny. It's tender. It's a movie you'll never forget and you'll watch over and over again.
