These and many other films deal with characters struggling to come to grips with their sense of reality and the moral choices this struggle imposes. In that sense almost any good drama that deals with moral ambiguity has a spiritual element to it. But films that deal directly with philosophical dilemmas as opposed to post-modernistically revelling in chaos or futile irony are much more resonant to the heart. Also, films that are irreverent but maintain a sense of seeking reality or at least real-ness such as Dogma have a legitimate spiritual sensibility imho. (ps- how do I create a link?)

It doesn't really matter if you are misunderstood by even a majority of the people- you are at least being a catalyst for change and who knows how far it will reach in the long run. I think much of the carping at celebrities who take stands stems from understandable human jealousy and the desire to prove that they are no better  and indeed often inferior to "us". It's helpful to stand back from the media -driven phenomenae and see them as normal humans who have to deal with both the glory and the backwash of their fame. Anyway, the "objective" view from most critics that I've seen so far is that  A Mighty Heart is worth seeing, and I'm looking forward to veiwing it and forming my own opinion.

Body: It's very interesting that a significant portion of the review of A Mighty Heart revolved around whether it's possible to consider Angelina Jolies' performance apart from her current cultural notoriety. But that is as it should be, given the power of mass media. It would be dumb (or tragically hip) to ignore the elephant in the room. I think we should forgive Angelina for being so much more hated and adored than we all are and try to appreciate what may be good or honestly observe what doesn't ring true in her performance. I think Adam and Sam did a good job of being as fair  and dispassionate as they could manage to be. Since Angelina's celebrity will fade before this film will, it's best to consider whether the film and performances will stand the test of time. The impression I took from the review is that this is a really good, possibly great movie and I am looking forward to seeing it and finding out for myself.

But that is as it should be, given the power of mass media. It would be dumb (or tragically hip) to ignore the elephant in the room. I think we should forgive Angelina for being so much more hated and adored than we all are and try to appreciate what may be good or honestly observe what doesn't ring true in her performance. I think Adam and Sam did a good job of being as fair  and dispassionate as they could manage to be. Since Angelina's celebrity will fade before this film will, it's best to consider whether the film and performances will stand the test of time. My hope is that through this combined plan plus the use of my hometown video stores for new releases and whatever desired DVD's they may stock, I'll be able to have movies when I want them and have a clearer conscience through not giving in (completely) to NF's complacent dominance of the market. Ideally I can drop Netflix completely, though I admit to some separation anxiety borne of the fact that NF just may have some movies I can't get anywhere else. Neurotic enough? Yes, I am a Woody Allen fan!   So what do you guys think? P.S. tried out Movielens and am very pleased. Good recommendations-
