If you are a member of this group, you love everything about the Super Bowl of movies, especially the movies themselves! Group Name: Movies we do not want to see - Try to convince us to see these movies!
Group Description: Want to be a member? Send me a message with a list of at least 5 movies that you do not want to see.

There are many movies that I do not want to see. I'm not sure if its right of me to decide never to see a movie without seeing it. You know...like when a kid says they hate mushrooms even though they admit never trying them. So maybe this is a good spot for people to display movies they don't think they want to see, and see if anyone can convince us to try them out.
Body: I'd like to see the red-haired doctor on Grey's Anatomy as Batman - he's got a silent and stormy presence plus the occaisonal rage. Or perhaps he'd work as a Bond character - there is something very Daniel Craig-ish about him. Also, i'd like to make the guy who plays Pete Campbell the Robin to Hamm's Batman.
We've got DVDs of the The Dark Knight. How do you win one?We all know Christian Bale growls too much and Heath Ledger carried The Dark Knight. For the sequel, let's go ahead and pick a new Batman. Pick someone to play Batman in the next movie and post their name here. Check back here on Friday, 11/12 to see if you've won!
Body: Although I picked Kinski, I also wanted to give credit where credit is due to Gary Oldman. What a transformation! But Kinski's vampire was really 3 dimensional, especially since most of the other characters in that film were so flat. my favorite scenes are 1) when he is moving the coffins off of the ship with this funny little walk to the church and 2) when he is running through the deserted streets of the town, bounding and leaping with such exaggeration. Too funny!
I picked this poll for a couple reasons. 1. This conversation in the Horror Movies 101 group turned towards discussing the greatest Draculas. 2. There was recently a vampire poll/tournament put on by Spout in which I think many people were a little disappointed that Twilight fans overwhelmed it. In this poll it won't be the tournament format and since it's just Dracula, the Twilight guy won't be included. Please vote only once in each poll. Movies referenced in this poll:Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)Dracula (1979)Horror of Dracula (1958)Dracula (1931)Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)Nosferatu the Vampire (1922)Dracula (1931)Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary (2002)
Body: I just saw Australia on Friday. Pros: Awesome cinematography - looks like a similar filter used in Peter Jackson's King Kong) Overarching storyline was great Real Aboriginal people cast as the Australian natives. Cons: DIdn't quite buy Hugh Jackman, pretty as he may be, as an old school cattle driver type. There was something too perfact about him- Viggo Mortensen would've been a more logicial choice- i could imagine him alseep under the stars. Also, the scene with him bathing outside is completely gratuitous and solely a beefcake shot( was that water in that bucket or baby oil anyway?) Didn't buy the romantic relationship between Jackman and Kidman- something was off If someone says " Crikie "( sp?) one more time... Dialog was bit cheesy ( like the above term used repeatedly) This film definitely gets better the more your think about it after you've left the theatre and you'll probably benefit from seeing the large screen format( lots of sweeping shots) rather than watching it on DVD Was it worth it? I thought so Would I see it a 2nd time? No Would I buy it on DVD for my collection? If I could get it on sale What did other folks think about it?
And by the way, Baz Luhrmann's Australia comes out on 11/26. Do you guys know anything about it? I mean, besides the fact that Hugh Jackman is frighteningly attractive with his shirt off?
Body: The thing that I find interesting about Tim Burton is that he has such a pat style - you could pick his films out of a crowd almost anywhere ( like Baz Luhrmann also has a set style). I recently saw Sweeney Todd and though I loved his vision for the film ( it must be difficult to adapt a muscial to the silver acreen), i kept thinking that there was something very early 90s about it. I think I would've liked it alot more if the film came out around the same time as Edward Scissorhands. Actually, i felt that the style of the film said more about Burton and the era he matured in than anything else (it's the same reason we see so many remakes of '80s material now- Transformers, Strawberry Shortcake, The Smurfs float in the Thanksgiving parade- the 80s generation is at an age where they have more of a say in work force and as a result what they remember being popular is making a comeback). My favorite Burton film is still Edward Scissorhands- I tera up at the end almost every time. So many of his films seem to take a page out of the Scissorhand handbook though- not making them bad films, just... predictable and slightly dated.
Body: Good question. Normally, when I think extreme, i think in terms of my comfort level being disturbed. Something that pushes me to the -nth degree would be labeled extreme. Something that is so outrageous, done purely for shock value or for the sake of being labeled 'transgressive' would be called extreme. On the other hand, according to Risselada defintion, Teletubbies(sp?) could be labeled extreme...and I might even throw most pandering child cartoons into that category ....the cherry on top of the "so -giggly cute- it's- annoying-enough- to-make -me- wanna-stab -myself- in- the- neck -with- a- pencil" extreme sundae. But my primary defintiion still stands.
After reading through the list started nominating 'extreme' films, I realized it seems we have wildly varied opinions and ideas of what makes a film 'extreme'. For instance, I am not particularly disturbed by physical violence or sex, but the combination of the two makes me physically ill at times. Does 'extreme' serve as a synonym for 'disturbing' or 'uncomfortable'? Is a graphic portrayal even necessary, or does your imagination do the work in some cases? Curious to hear what everyone has to say...
Body: When I think Extreme Films, the first thing to come to mind is totrure porn films like Saw. The original one is brutal- when they threaten to pull that woman's mouth apart from the corners...i shrudder just thinking about it. As the Voice put it in a brillant article on Rosemary's Baby, "Horror movies provide a snapshot of the zeitgeist" and today's horror films "reflect the age of "enhanced" interrogation techniques." Happy Halloween.
First off I would like to thank our host, Stinger839, for starting this most promising group! The subject matter of Extreme Cinema has a lot of potential for some interesting conversations. I think I will be here regularly talking about many movies that are near and dear to me! So let's start this thing off with a 'bang', shall we? Last night when my partner Phantasma-Gore-ia and I became the first people to join this group we quickly discovered that we were not able to list any films on the existing group list so I started my own list called Extreme Films... The first three movies I listed on here are legendary examples of Extreme Cinema. First off, Deliverance ... John Boorman's take on the infamous James Dickey novel is a phenomenal film that deals with man's survival instincts in the face of overwhelming odds. Although most people can not get past the homosexual rape scene and the subsequent murders and Burt Reynold's compound fracture of his thigh bone that would make ANYBODY wince! Yeah, this movie is a little bit over-the-top... Next on the list is Mandingo . This shocking story of slavery in the old South is nothing short of being 'politically incorrect' ... Former heavy-weight boxing champion Ken Norton stars as 'Mede', a Mandingo warrior who is captured and sold to a wealthy southern family and is trained to be a "fightin' nigger" who is forced to fight against other slaves for the betting pleasure of his owner. Sexual debauchery abounds in this perverse tale that ends with Mede being shot and boiled alive and 'pitchforked' to death! ... Next is Pretty Baby ... Brooke Shields made her movie debut in this shocker about prostitution in New Orleans. Susan Sarandon is a prostitute in a New Orleans brothel who becomes pregnant and decides to keep her child. That child (Brooke Shields) is raised in the brothel until she becomes 12 and then her virginity is auctioned off to the highest bidder. About this time she becomes the obsession of a French photographer named Bellocq who is actually more interested in photographing he young girl than he is in touching her! Although there is deffinately a physical relationship that is more hinted at than actually shown! The thing is this... 12 year old Brooke Shields spends much of this movie running around naked! This movie received a wide theatrical release back in the day and was a 'mainstream' movie! Today this movie would be called 'kiddie-porn' and it would be illegal to even THINK about it! That is pretty extreme in my book... Obviously no list of 'extreme' films would not be complete without the scariest, most disturbing Horror movie ever made so I must go now and add The Exorcist to my list as well as Nekromantik ! < GOR >
< GOR >
</spout:body>

Body: I think you raise an intresting question, Gor. It seems to me that it comes down to people's general view of women and sexuality...again (doesn't it always?). We have a 21st century cultural understanding that women who sleep with men 'just because' are not degrading themselves even if the motivation could be something other than attraction or love. Sex for money is merely an exhange of power and services but that is chastised more than drunken night bar sex with the guy who bought you an extra gin& tonic. That person is just as much a stranger as any John Doe, and that sexual experience could be construed as just as 'crude' as mutual arrangement of protitution. It appears to me that in general, we want to keep our flowery perceptions of sex when it suits us, but draw a line in the sand that THIS is unacceptable in order to...i dunno, make ourselves feel better somehow? if that is so, it seems a pretty odd place to draw the line, when the flowery stuff people usually state as reasons prositution are wrong (this arguement excludes STDs, victimization issues- that is a different discussion, not film related) have been trodded over time & again. Bottom Line: Sex and women have always been something that makes the world uncomfortable. Women should have the right to have sex for whatever reason they choose, lust in whatever form, without being damned for it. The men in the aforementioned films are supposed to swoop in and save the women from their lowly sexual positions (after seeing they are worthy inside because their hearts are still pure) and make them the revirginized princesses they all despertaely want to be. Life is a more complicated then that, and films have boxed women into the Madonna/Whore roles for far too long. Women have just as much a human right to be as ' morally despicable' in character as any man (NOT that men) and until women have the right to be seen that way( with sex being a part of everyone's life), we will continue with these stereotypes.

Good picks! The "Prosititute to Princess" plot has always irked me. Pretty Woman in some ways is almost a romanticism of prostitution. Yikes! And you're right--in the end it always takes a kind-hearted gentleman to come along and see her for what she really is and reach out to her despite her lowly position. I understand how that message could be perceived as good (don't judge a book by its cover, etc), however I think there are ways of showing it that would be less demeaning and less stereotypical.
Don't underestimate "the oldest profession in the world" , my friend. Prostitutes are a very important part of every society in the world. They have been around since the very dawn of Man and they will probably be around long after we are extinct. Just what, exactly, would you call that girl who lets you fuck her just because you have a nice car and you buy her pretty things? I am 48 years old and I have seen it all and every night I get down on my knees and thank God for prostitutes... < GOR >
Body: The two films I'd like to discuss star Winona Ryder in two very different roles: The Age of Innocence and Bram Stoker's Dracula. The Age of Innocence deals with many themes of early 20th century life, but specifically of the suffocation of women at that time. May Welland ( Ryder) is supposed to be an innocent in comparison to her more brazen cousin Mme. Olenska (played by the ever beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer). What we learn, however, is that May knows more than she lets on about the nature of people and even surprises her husband Archer in the end by understanding the stifling he felt during their marriage. Despite her intellect, if she had let her husband in on her ideas might've saved their marriage, she felt tied to the conventions of the time-forced to mold herself ( and her husband) into a couple of that era, never breaking from convention. She so bought into this notion that she did not question convention at all or, as Archer said " there was no need trying to emancipate a wife who hadn't the dimmest notion she wasn't free." The new film The Duchess deals with similar themes of a woman's asphyxiation in a marriage. Winona in Dracula is almost like what men feared would happened to someone like May Welland if they did not keep them naive and out of touch with their sexuality. What if May decided to open up to Archer and actually have real relationship, beyond the politeness and formality? What if she feell down the rabbit hole and decided to meet his expectations? What this film represents is how afraid men were ( and in many cases, still are) of a woman's sexual awakening. Although the film ( and the novel) take place in a bygone era, how much have films really changed from portraying women as either the delicate virgin or the seductive, man-eating whore? I think the more films tackle life's gray area, the sticky, confusing parts, the more we'll see heroines that fall somewhere in the middle of those achetypes.
I'm hoping to get a list going here of 'essential' films featuriing women. In some way, these films should each create/portray some sort of archetype that somehow demonstrates an idea/stereotype/cultural standard for women. I'll start. I chose Kill Bill for the group picture because I feel that few films have shown so many different aspects and archetypes for women. The very fact that Uma Thurman's character is referred to as 'The Bride' is worthy of note in and of itself. Her character goes from sword-wielding-sexy-vixen to nuturing mother to vengeful kung-fu killer to mother bear to... well, you get the point. I'm not sure any other film hits so many cultural archetypes so clearly. Was there an intentional message in all of this? I'm not even really sure, however I feel that Kill Bill leaves the audience with a sense that women are deeper than the typical shallow one-sided portrayal that is so painfully common on the silver screen. I would actually be so bold as to submit this as a feminist film.
Body: Ok, my fellow 80s children, what film described what you thought adulthood would be like when you were a kid? In your infinite wisdom, wise sage that you've become, do you think the film was a)right on the money or b) did it leave you not knowing what you'd be in for after highschool? I think my film choice would be St. Elmo's Fire. The film had the "no one knows what the heck they're doing now that they've graduated with a bunch of degrees that cant use in the real world" thing about it that was pretty accurate, overall. There was still some of that John Hughes-esque angst to it that was also pretty accurate, at least during the initial post college Exodus, which actually makes me wonder if folks ever evolve past a certain point. Maybe some do, maybe some don't.
We thought we were the only ones to do so until we saw High Fidelity. So how about a good-natured duel? Off comes the first glove: Recast High Fidelity. And the second glove: What's your favorite Top Five list? Do you have a list like "Top 5 Movies the Coens Must Remake," or "Top 5 Bill Murray Characters," or even "Top 5 Albums to Make Out to"? Prizes for the best recasts and lists. Winners will be announced Friday, Oct. 17. En guarde. John Cusack ... Rob Gordon Iben Hjejle ... Laura Todd Louiso ... Body: Top Political Passion Projects -- For good and for ill, celebrities can get too big for their britches and make very politically-motivated movies. For the political movie, I'd like to nominate W. w/ Josh Brolin as our "fearless" leader. Top Virgins Who Lost it On a Road Trip -- We got to thinking about how many road trips involve someone losing their virginity. Why is it easier to get laid on the road? I second the nomination for Road Trip! That scene was hiliarious! But, if I had to nominate a separate film, if one could even call it that, I'd have to go with Crossroads ala Britney Spears. Which might also fit into the Muscians turned Movie Makers category- if you want to count Spears as a musician. lol
Hola group, On SpoutBlog, you may have seen Chris Campbell's weekly lists. I thought it would be fun if the Top 5 group got to weigh in what we're thinking about from week to week. I'll give you the topics, you weigh in with your movies, and when Chris' posts go up (between Tuesday and Friday) we'll let you know here in the group so you can check them out. Here are the lists we're working on this week (10/13/08) for SpoutBlog: Top Political Passion Projects -- For good and for ill, celebrities can get too big for their britches and make very politically-motivated movies. Top Musicians Who Made Movies -- We're not talking actors-turned-musicians, like Bruce Willis or Crispin Glover...maybe that should be its own list. We're thinking more along the lines of Madonna's latest foray as director. Top Virgins Who Lost it On a Road Trip -- We got to thinking about how many road trips involve someone losing their virginity. Why is it easier to get laid on the road? I'd look forward to reading what you think. -Paul
