Group Name: Disability On Film - Discuss depictions of disability on film
Group Description:
Film lovers often observe ... and sometimes complain ... that high-profile movies that depict people with disabilities get lots of mainstream praise and awards because the films tug at peoples' heartstrings. It's also been observed that depicting a disabled person is an "easy" way for actors to get credit for what is seen as "difficult" portrayals. Yet, this can also be viewed cynically as cheap "stunt acting".

But, what does cinema throughout history say about the experience of living with disabilities? What constitutes a "positive" portrayal vs. a "negative" one?

Group Name: B Movies - B is for better
Group Description:
B movies are like the original Not Ready for Primetime Players--funny, brave, brainless, learned, rowdy, rough, ribald, and dangerous.

B movies can be like a seven dollar bottle of champagne, miles away from the real thing but every bit as fun. (Semi-Pro)

They can be like absinthe, so bizarre you wonder if you're actually enjoying yourself. Nobody else will be able to tell you. (Eraserhead)

They can be like moonshine. Lightning in a bottle, you wonder how the maker captured it, you wonder if they even know how good it is or if they could do it again. (The Night of the Hunter)

They're like surprise hard cider. Something that's been set aside, and then you find it by accident, take a tentative sip, and it knocks you to the floor! (Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women)

They're like straight Yagermeister, the kind with deerblood and mercury in it. An acquired taste that never lets you forget how dangerous it is, and others can't fathom why you're in love with it. (Wicker Man--1974).

Body: Which horror movies are truly scary? What scared you? My friend Dana enjoys watching horror movies but she has yet to see one that actually scared her. She asked me for some suggestions. I told her that WE (HORROR MOVIES 101) would try to help her. Any suggestions from my fellow horrorphiles will be appreciated. My standard answer to this question is that The Exorcist (1973) is STILL the scariest movie ever made. But the fact is that horror movies are entirely subjective. What is scary to one person might be laughable to another. Also there is this... Even the scariest movie is only scary the first time. A scary movie tends to lose it's scare factor exponentially with each viewing. Here are a few that scared the crap out of me the first time I saw them... The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) The Hills Have Eyes (1977) Night of the Living Dead (1968) The Haunting (1963/I) The Legend of Hell House (1973) Psycho (1960) Darkness Falls (2003) And a little movie about a killer chimp called Link (1986) ... No shit. This one scared the crap out of me on late night TV one night.... of course I was pretty stoned and tired at the time... So what are your thoughts? What scared YOU? < GOR >
Body: I watched the horror movie Sick Girl (2007, Dir: Eben McGarr) a few months ago, about a girl with a creepy fixation on her older brother and violent tendencies. Though I found it mostly underwhelming, there was a bit of nastiness at the end that places Sick Girl amongst a number of movies that share something in common: Severe Male Genital Violence. While this group is mostly about movies that are on friendly terms with the male genitalia, I thought I'd bring the topic up because I've seen quite a few male genital butchery scenes over the years. Probably the first such scene that sticks in my mind appeared in the Wes Craven voodoo flick The Serpent and the Rainbow. Bill Pullman is the unfortunate recpient of a metal spike hammered into his scrotum, if I recall. I don't think much about the movie in general, but I haven't forgotten Bill Pullman strapped to a chair naked, begging for mercy. I think he pleads "What do you want me to do? I'll do it" and then his tormentor replies "I want to hear you scream!", and then delivers the blow. Poor Bill does indeed scream. That scene does leave the actual visual details to the viewer's imagination, though. In Sick Girl and numerous others, the violence is much more graphic and irreparable. In at least two movies I can think of, Cannibal Ferox and Cannibal (2005, Dir: Marian Dora), not only is the genitalia hacked off, but eaten as well. Actually, here's all the movies I recall where the genitals were removed and consumed: Cannibal (cooked as part of a meal) , Hostel 2 (fed to dog), Bare Behind Bars (fed to dog in one scene, force fed to victim in another) , Ricco The Mean Machine (fed to victim), Cannibal Ferox (eaten by remover). In the movies Teeth, Papaya: Love Goddess of the Cannibals, and Last House on the Left (1972), I believe that the gentalia was bitten off then spit out afterward. Cannibal displays easily the most drawn out, in-your-face genital violence I know of. Before successfully removing his victim's organ (I should note that the "victim" is willing), the guy tries to bite it off. This doesn't work out, so he just cuts it off, leaving a bloody stump that squirts eurine! This is something I had not yet encountered, and so I was impressed. He later cooks up the severed member and and shares it with the former owner. All of this is shown unflinchingly. Only the ending of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her lover approaches this sort of grossness. Strangely, while Cannibal is nauseatingly graphic, I never felt the need to grab my own privates defensively while watching it. Really, the only movie that still makes me cringe in that fashion is I Spit On Your Grave. The bathtub scene has always been in my mind the most unsettling act of hostility toward a guy's manhood. There he is, enjoying the moment, and then out comes the knife. A few seconds later the blood starts to flow. None of this is much more graphic than The Serpent and the Rainbow, but there is something viscerally disturbing about it. Camille Keaton visits upon the rapist a cold vengeance, and the stupid bastard never saw it coming. The other villains in the movie get off easily by comparison (though the death by boat motor probably stung a bit). Sudden Impact is another rape/revenge movie involving genital violence that I can think of, but it doesn't come close to I Spit On Your Grave. The rapists in that get shot in the groin and then mercifully in the head. The guy in I Spit suffers for who knows how long. Anyway, Sick Girl got a bit more creative and depraved than I was expecting. Not only is the organ removed, but it's then used in an act of sexual violence. In fact, I can't think of any other movie that goes this route. Check it out, and see what you think.
Body: After sitting through a good number of nudity-centric movies, I've come to notice some reoccuring types of onscreen nakedness. Whenever I watch pretty much any movie with higher than a PG-13 rating, I'm on the look out for these old reliables: Naked Female Swimming - This involves any sort of frolicking in a body of water, as well as straightforward swimming. A memorable occurence of this type of nudity appeared in the 1978 war movie Inglorious Bastards, when American soldiers happen upon some unclothed German ladies in a lake. The soldiers merrily join in, that is, until the bare Frauen realize they are Americans and open fire with machine guns. Naked Female Running - This involves any movement of jogging speed or faster. I've seen naked women running from crazed killers and I've seen naked women running carefree through nature. Watch the movie Ubalda, All Naked And Warm to see Edwige Fenech engaging in the latter. (I think a naked madman chases a nude woman in the Charles Bronson movie 10 To Midnight, but I forget. Let me know if I'm right.) Naked Female Dancing - Very often this occurs in the proximity of a stripper's pole, but not always. Sometimes a lady just wants to let loose because a good song is playing, or because she's on drugs. One of the greatest Naked Female Dancing movies, in my opinion, is Snake Dancer (which is not yet available for rating on Spout, sadly). It's based on the true life tale of Glenda Kemp, who ran afoul of South African censors for her provocative dance numbers involving snakes and hand puppets. Awesome. She even plays herself. Naked Female Massage - This involves a naked woman giving and/or receiving a massage. A topless woman is seen giving Dwight Yokam a massage (briefly) in the movie Crank, but there are better examples out there if you know where to look. In the movie Getting Into Heaven, (also not yet available for rating) for example, there is some decent girl on girl massage action worth checking out. Female Bath Scene - These are fairly common. Sometimes there is an actual reason to show a woman taking a bath, like for symbolism or something. Usually, though, it's just to show her sudsing up private parts. Female Shower Scene - This is pretty much the same as above. From my experience, though, shower scenes are more frequent than bath scenes. You could probably walk into a video store and pick a random movie off the shelf (excluding the family section) and have a good chance of finding a shower scene somewhere on that DVD. (If you pull it from the Horror section, your chances increase dramatically, I would guess.) It is not necessarily true that a movie that contains many or all these will be a masterpiece. The more the merrier, of course, but there are other factors to consider. Naturally, the women in the movie should be attractive and the director should have some idea what he/she is doing. I expect more style than your typical porn shoot, at least. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for these basics, though, and watching nudity-centric movies will become more rewarding. (NOTE: A person's sex and/or sexual orientation might require that these types be altered somewhat. I'll leave the particulars up to those individuals.
</spout:body>

Body: It is time. Several people have asked me to share my true life paranormal experiences over the last couple of years. I have a few experiences to share so this might take some time... This discussion is open for all of you to contribute so if you have had a paranormal or "horror movie" situation happen to you I would like to hear about it! This does not have to be a ghost story! It can be an encounter with a Monster like Bigfoot or The Lochness Monster or a giant Black Leopard or with a psychopathic killer like Henry Lee Lucas or Jack the Ripper... Mine is a ghost story and I will share it with you now... Ms. June, Froggybabe, Robert, Chris, Rizzo, Puhnner and anybody else who is curious, this is for you... (my memory of exact dates or timeline might be a little fucked up due to several years of drug and alcohol abuse) ... In the early 1980's my family moved into a large house in the Lake Arbor community in northern Arvada Colorado. I moved in with them on the condition that I would rent the entire basement for $200 per month. The basement was divided lengthwise into two rooms. One room was my bedroom that had enough room for not only my bed but a couch and chairs and a table and a huge walk-in closet and a full size refrigerator/freezer AND my own bathroom! The other room was a large finnished living-room type room with a couple of big couches and chairs and a fireplace... I slept alone in this basement for more than a year with SOMETHING that was not of this world. My first encounter with this entity was in the form of a dream... or rather a nightmare. I had the scariest dream of my life about a tall guy with dark curly hair and thick black-rimmed glasses who was attacking me in that very house and wanted only to kill me. The next morning I told my Mom that I had just had the scariest dream of my life and she said "Stop! You are giving me goosebumps!" and I said "Why?" and she said because she had had the exact same dream! It was not long afterward when I saw the exact same guy standing in the middle of my bedroom when I was wide awake! I stood face to face with this "spook" not more than three feet away one night and I am convinced that I personally met a Demon... More to come... you asked for it... < GOR >
Body: Every Halloween I make it a point to watch at least a couple good horror films. This year, with the popularity of Paranormal Activity following on the heels of Blair Witch , I decided to go "old-school" with the original ultra-low-budget blockbuster that started them all. Night of the Living Dead (1968) was THE drive-in hit movie of it's day that set the standards for horror movies - and ZOMBIE movies - for years to come. I first saw this at the drive-in during it's initial release (my Dad took me) and I have seen it about 100 times since then. I have no less than 6 (!) DIFFERENT copies of this movie in my collection including TWO different colorized versions and the infamous "30th Anniversary Edition" that includes newly filmed added scenes. This year I watched the original version. What a great movie. I have memorized every scene and every line of dialogue and it never gets old! I followed this up with the 1990 remake directed by Tom Savini... Night of the Living Dead (1990) ... You all know how much I dislike remakes (usually), but in this case I actually liked the remake better! Let us say that it was at least as good as the original! Filmed in color (the original was filmed in black and white simply because they could not afford color film) and with better actors and crew and a bigger budget this was simply a better film! Much more action packed and intense than the original but with the same story line this is simply a better movie! There! I've said it! You can crucify me now... < GOR >
Body: This one's gonna be another one of those "high-brow" topics y'all have come to love and expect from us here at the Weekly Theme. I know it's late, but in my defense, I was killed in a killer kill scene earlier and my zombie fingers have finally started working well enough to type. So let's talk this week about all of the greatest death scenes ever committed to film. One of my recent favorites is Ted Raimi's character in The Midnight Meat Train. Very very brutal... but still pretty damn fun. Also (without spoiling) I would say that last year's Burn After Reading had one of the most surprisingly and shockingly awesome kill scenes I've ever seen. But I would say my all time favorite comes from a film that I really didn't care for much. Soderberg's Out of Sight ('98) has a death involving a hefty fella running up a flight of stairs with a loaded shotgun...... Hilarity ensues!! Well let's hear it. I left quite a bit off this post, so I'll check back later and add some more. What's your favorite killer kill scene? Peace & Brains Emery the Living Dead.
Body: I just wanted to let you know that I am taking two different classes in October and half of November. One is called Schlock Cinema which is going back to watch B rated movies and discussing what was happening at that time in history for the movie to be made. The other class I am taking is American Horror Movie and how it corrilates to history. So I will be watching movies and also learning something on every Tuesday and Thursday night next month and part of November. Yes, I really didn't think it through when I signed up for both classes, but it just sounded like something I would really like, 2 times a week might be a little much, though. I will try to post what I watch and what I learned, someone might find it interesting.
Body: Is a new movie coming out on October 2nd. It looks really funny (some of you may think it's really stupid, but I also like all the Scary Movie movies so I'm sure I'll like this). Anyway, if you get a chance, visit the site: www.zombieland.com Something fun before Halloween!
Body: So my girlfriend and I have this fascination with Bigfoot, thus I rented a compilation of Bigfoot themed films from Netflix. They were all really bad as we had expected, but had some amusing moments. Here's the rundown of what we saw: The Capture of Bigfoot - the first one on the DVD. This establishes a lot of common themes in you average Bigfoot movie. The villain of the film wants to kill or capture Bigfoot for his own noteriety and riches. The good guys of the film want Bigfoot to stay free. The authorities want the problem of Bigfoot killing people to be solved so that it doesn't scare away tourists (kind of a Jaws theme). There's a pointless party. And Bigfoot likes to attack couples who have sex in the woods. The only thing here you probably wouldn't see in any other Bigfoot movie is a sheriff who likes to do impressions of famous Hollywood actors for no aparent reason. There's a sweet snowmobile stunt, but also some horrible snowmobile work too. The most interesting thing was that it was filmed very close to where my girlfriend would go camping every year growing up in Wisconsin. You can hear a lot of the Wisconsin accents. Shriek of the Mutilated - The goriest, most famous, and most exciting of all of the movies on this disc, but it's still horrible. Horrible acting, filming, pacing, and editing. But some amusingly bad characters. And an amusing and unexpected piece of violence near the beginning of the film before we even see the beast. The ending is very strange and kind of a disappointment. Search for the Beast - The most recent of all of the films on this disc and also by far the worst. Actually probbly the worst movie I've ever seen. Apparently shot on VHS or some other horrible video media from the 90s. As bad as the other films on this disc were, this one was so bad I couldn't even believe it was paired with the rest. Again, having sex in the woods means Bigfoot will come for you to kill you and fuck you. But this is the fakest looking Bigfoot EVER. There are a lot of tropes in this film mentioned earlier as well. The acting is worse here than ever!! Also like Shriek of the Mutilated, the ending would have been a disappointment if I hadn't stopped caring after the first two minutes! I challenge you to watch this film all the way without considering it torture!! You are allowed to drink like I did though. Legend of Bigfoot - I was kind of worn out by the time we got to this one. This is presented as if it were a documentary but was clearly fake. Not really a horror movie either, although there are some times I think you are supposed to feel a little scared. Nothing would make sense if it weren't for the extensive and goofy narration. It was probably just made to capitalize on the topic (well actually that's proably the reason for all of these movies). So has anyone here seen any good Bigfoot movies that they would like to recommend?
Body: Just that. In horror-dom, there seems to be this mandatory bravura, this stolid attitude of "that wasn't scary" or "that was lame." I believe, however, if you can find the chinks in this armor, you can pry the plates apart and find what really gets beneath someone's skin, what really scares them. Case in point: in Saw II, one of the most squirm-inducing sequences for a lot of viewers, despite the brutal violence and gushing gore was the infamous needle pit that Xavier so courteously treated Amanda to. A lot of people simply were taken to the edge by that scene, deeply affected. I, on the other hand, didn't bat an eyelash. Now, I get through horror in part because I know it's not real (save those tasteless Italians...) and that, moreover, I know how they do it. There is one thing - only one - that puts me in my place and makes me realize I'm not invulnerable to the horrors of Horror. An instance in Dead Men Walking speaks to this end and in fact lays out my feelings perfectly while also serving as a gruesome example:0:35:40. It’s time I come clean about something here: I can take just about bloody (ahem) anything in horror films, but I’ll have to face that when it comes to crap being puked up, thrown up, chucked up, what have you, my stomach starts to loosen and it takes will power to keep it down. Mostly I’m O.K., but if I already am sick (with flu, not a biotoxin) or I’ve just eaten a big meal, the case becomes stronger to stop from hurling myself. Now, on with the gore. The other two of the infected trio earlier barf blood all over their escorts while a third (and this is where it gets really disgusting) is foaming up with a pinkish mixture of some unholy slime that oozes down his face like lava from a science fair volcano. Eventually, everybody in the mess hall, as it were, is puking blood all over everyone else, the entire affair one absolutely stomach-turning episode of ungodly sickness. SR: SSSSS I have always been gastrointestinally uneasy and when I see notable scenes like the one I'm thinking about as the subject of this particular post, it leaves me a bit uneasy. It is in City of Living Dead and it is a spot that seared itself in my memory forever. Giallo and general Italian horror fans, based on what I've already said, will know exactly what it is, but for everyone's edification (or vile enjoyment) I'll reproduce here how I said it on my site:“THE BODY PURGING” 0:31:30. A girl’s eyes start to bleed…then it gets really sick. She starts to foam atthe mouth as if rabid, the foam quickly turning red and then into strange things: intestines – yards and yards of them – and then organs of several shapes, sizes and colors. In time, the girl vomits up her innards while the specter of the suicidal priest stares her down. After the body purging, a hand reaches into the boy’s hair and grabs out a chunk of his brains, leaving a grapefruit-sized hole. SR: ããããã That left me feeling ill, like I might be sick myself. That, I must say, is rare. In fact, it never happens. Nothing I have ever seen that does not involve projectile or otherwise unusual puking has prompted a physical reponse like this. A third and final moment in this vein (ahem) in my grim horror-watching career comes from Wishmaster 3:0:54:12. Don’t eat prior to watching this scene, I really mean it. Anne befriends the Djinn, tragically unaware of course of who he really is. She wished earlier to lose some weight. If you know anything about the series, it’s that the Djinn always grants wishes, but never in the manners intended. Anne indeed loses weight, a la City of the Living Dead. Her nose and areas around her mouth start to bleed, events that the Djinn describes as “a little liposuction.” As she starts to spit up a liquid, molten mixture of fat and blood, the Djinn goes on about how she always considered her stomach a problem area. In a few seconds that too is on the floor and the waxy substance she’d been spitting up for a while continues. As Diana steadfastly refuses to make her wishes, aware of the repercussions if she did, Anne continues to waste away, her entire body’s worth of fat shriveling up, her skin taking on a gruesome new complexion. Eventually the Djinn talks her into wishing for him to relieve her of the pain, naturally intending for the process to be reversed. Instantly, however, all her joints go limp and she’s D.O.A. SR: SSSSS So, now that I've come clean about what grosses me out, how 'bout you?
SR: SSSSS So, now that I've come clean about what grosses me out, how 'bout you?</spout:body>

Body: These two mega-trilogies (or six-logy, whatever the word is, for SW) are generally considered the cream of the crop of fantasy and movie blockbusters and pop culture. Which one is your favorite? Personally, I go back and forth. On the one hand, the original SW trilogy has been my favorite all my life. On the other hand, LOTR come from my favorite books and live up to all of my expectations. It's a tough one to call...! So, put in your vote!
I really liked the original movie, it's not very well known but it was pretty good. Anyone have any opinion on the old movie or the new one?
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. I just posted a blog about The Hunchback of Notre Dame. One of the things commented on the special features was how this movie was almost outshadowed by the so many other well known movies that also came out of Hollywood in this same year. I could hardly even list half of films that are still well known today, but I tried my best to pick what would probably be people's most favorites. Please vote only once in each poll. Body: ...is a delightful looking PC game that I want VERY BADLY. In it, you plant flowers and use gardening skills to fend off a horde of the undead. Intriguing, yes. Boring, no. It looks a lot like a game I like to play called Plantasia, made by the creators of Diner Dash. Both ridiculously fun and entertaining. But, just wanted to alert the group to this marvel and see if anyone else has played it. Yay zombies!
Body: Well fellow Spouters, it's been ages and ages since I posted on this site but by golly I missed it. And I'm bored. So I got that going for me, too. Anywho, if you want to know where I've been, just send me a message. But I will not bore you with the details on this particular post. I've seen a few movies lately, which were pretty gay (I use that word in reference to that word "stupid..." If you have a problem with it, I wouldn't suggest telling me or I will bite your face off) including a film based on a story by one of my very favorite authors. The movie I am referring to is Midnight Meat Train (I think the "Link a Movie" deally is not working right now. Damn) and it was horribletastic with holes everywhere and a very unsexy and disturbing sex scene that made me want to ralph. Nothing was really explained and I can't remember if I'm supposed to be pissed off or not because I can't remember the short story very well so I will have to be reading that some time soon. On another note, welcome to everyone who has joined since my hiatus and I hope things will be fun fun fun for the time I decide to keep posting. Cheers!
Body: In Seattle this weekend there is going to be a zombie walk where they are trying to get as many people as possible to break the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest zombie walk ever. I will not be a zombie, my friends think I am strange enough, but I will be doing something fun. On Friday night, the Fremont outdoor movies here in Seattle, is going to be showing Shaun of the Dead and having a best zombie costume contest. So this should be really fun! Just wondering if any other towns had things like this? I know around Halloween it is really a zombie fest. I've also heard that with Michael Jackson's death, there are places that are doing a "Thriller" walk and dance. Anything else happening or will happen one day in your area?
Body: This week I'd just like to talk about your favorite use of any particular song in a film.. Here's a couple of my faves.. The first is the opening scene to Lock, Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels.. The Song is "Hundred Mile High City" by Ocean Colour Scene... ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ I also really loved hearing Jim Carrol's "People Who Died" at the end of Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake. I could probably come up with a dozen more from people like Tarentino and Wes but I'm a bit short on time at the moment so I'll chime in again a bit later. Let's here from the rest of you...
Body: There are times I just can't wait to see the Trailers for new movies coming out that I have been dying to see. There are also times that I get so mad that these people who make the trailers give WAY too much of the movie away, including the endings. Now this really isn't a SPOILER because it was on the trailer but when I watched the trailer for Quarantine, I knew exactly what was going to happen...when you see the lead actress being pulled extremely fast backwards in the dark...you know it's not going to end well. Anyway, what are some trailers that you have seen that just gave away TOO much information. If you are going to reveal endings of movies, make sure you put a spoiler alert before it just in case someone hasn't seen it yet.
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Watchmen is coming out pretty soon, and up until last week I don't think I could ever say I'd read a graphic novel before. Someone lent me their copy of this book, and I'm actually only halfway through it still, but I'm really hooked. So for this poll I tried to pick movies that came strictly from graphic novels. For instance there were some I was originally going to add, but my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series. In the case of American Splendor I couldn't tell if these were "comic books" or "novels" (I haven't seen the movie either...) so I just left it off to keep the list as focused as possible. And as for anything Japanese or manga based, that's just another huge world that I might do another poll about later, but for now I didn't include anything from that. Sorry if I missed your favorite, but please feel free to discuss. Please vote only once in each poll. Movies referenced in this poll:300From HellGhost WorldA History of ViolencePersepolisRoad to PerditionSin CityV for Vendetta
Body: Two major celebrities died today, June 25th, 2009. I think I can mention Farrah Fawcet in here because she actually starred in a VERY good Sci-Fi/HORROR movie from 1980 called Saturn 3 (1980) . She also had a minor role in Logan's Run (1976) ... Lets face it, EVERYBODY has watched Charlie's Angels and, in the 70's, EVERY teenage boy in America had ":The Poster" ... you know the one I'm talking about... the one with the one-piece swimmng suit and the protruding nipples and the big smile and the big hair... I still have the issue of Playboy that has a pictorial of Farrah when she was 40... she looked like she was 18... Farrah Fawcett will be missed by me and I was deeply saddened today by the news of her death. Oh yeah... Michael Jackson Died today also. Wow. Maybe now his children will have SOME chance of having a somewhat normal life... maybe... < GOR >
Body: David Carradine was found dead in his hotel room in Bankok yesterday. He was 72. The reports of the cause of death are, at this point, sketchy at best but it sounds like a suicide. You can read the AOL news story here... David Carradine Dies; Suicide Reported . David, eldest son of legendary actor John Carradine, was among my favorite actors of all time and I thouroghly enjoyed every role I've seen him in. He was a veteran actor with over 200 movies and TV shows to his credit. My introduction to David Carradine, like most people, was the legendary TV show Kung Fu (1972-1975). An interesting note... this TV show was written specifically for the biggest martial arts star at that time... Bruce Lee! At the last minute the studio exec's decided that Bruce Lee looked "too oriental" and sought out a more American looking actor who looked "somewhat" oriental and David Carradine's career was about to take off! David began learning martial arts only AFTER he began filming Kung Fu . All of his "Kung Fu" moves in that show were simple choreography or, as he described it, like dancing. In other words, he was faking it. It would have been a different show if Bruce Lee were the star but it wasn't meant to be. Oh well... it was a great TV show that launched a fantastic career. I next saw Mr. Carradine in a series of GREAT movies beginning with... Death Race 2000 (1975) ; As "Frankenstein", David has a plan to assassinate the dictorial President of the United States. "It's a "hand" grenade..." ... Cannonball! (1976) ; David was participating in an illegal cross-country race before Burt Reynolds ever thought of it. Thunder and Lightning (1977) ; David is a moon-runner in Florida driving a beefed-up '57 chevy with girlfriend Kate Jackson by his side... Eat your heart out, Burt Reynolds... Circle of Iron (1978) ; Mr. Carradine plays multiple roles in this, most excellent, martial arts film. I never get tired of watching this one.... in fact, I think I will watch it again tonight! The original screenplay was co-written by Bruce Lee and James Coburn! The Long Riders (1980) ; David was Cole Younger in this family-fest that featured the Keach brothers as the James's and the Carradine brothers as the Youngers. A great and underapreciated western that has a violence level on a par with the best of them... Q (1982) ; David is a police detective (along with Richard "Shaft" Roundtree) trying to solve the mystery of the giant flying lizard that has been eating the inhabitants of New York in this GREAT tongue-in-cheek giant-monster movie. Lone Wolf McQuade (1983) ; David battles Chuck Norris... David loses... Sonny Boy (1989) ; David is a psochotic transvestite called "Pearl" ... Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1990) ; David steps into the shoes of his famous father playing "Dracula" in this offshoot of the classic... Evil Toons (1992) ; Mr. Carradine has a minor role in this Fred Olen Ray T & A fest... Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992) ; Another minor role in a pretty good movie... Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998) ; See above... And, of course, his triumphant return in Kill Bill I and II ... David Carradine was an amazing actor and an inspiration for me in many ways. He will be missed. < GOR >
Body: Hi guys, i'm looking for a horro movie from late 80's - 90's i guess. I've seen it on TV like 10 years ago, but i didn't got it from the begining. The movie starts with a daughter (i think) comming home to a little town where is greeted by her mother, the go by car to the town but they can see anyone. After they go looking through houses they see that almost everybody is dead or dissaperead or something. But they find some people and go hide at the police hq or something like that. I can't remember any more details about that part, but afterwards it's revealed that an entity live under the city, or something like that, and they wait for a SWAT team, and near the end all the people appear in the center of the town. Sorry for the spelling mistake and for the writing style. So anybody have a clue? i really really apreciate it:)
