Group Name: Independent Features
Group Description:
"Our vision was to create a festival whereby filmmakers of all walks of life could submit their feature films to the festival and be judged by an international jury of their peers via a web-based competition" -Philip J. Nelson, President of Independent Features

Independent Features was created by two independent filmmakers who learned first hand how hard it is to find an independent film an audience. After completing their first independent feature in March of 2001, they ran into the same predicament most independent filmmakers find themselves in. They found it very hard to find their film an audience. After years of working outside of the film industry they talked about giving it another shot, they always loved independent film. Instead of producing another film they decided to go another direction, they created a platform that would give independent filmmakers a global audience. Independent Features pioneered the first film festival in which film selection is done ONLINE via a web-based competition. The 2008 competition will take place through June 30th with the top 21 films receiving an invitation to the Independent Features Film Festival. The festival will take place July 25-27 at the acclaimed Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.

Group Name: Disability On Film - Discuss depictions of disability on film
Group Description:
Film lovers often observe ... and sometimes complain ... that high-profile movies that depict people with disabilities get lots of mainstream praise and awards because the films tug at peoples' heartstrings. It's also been observed that depicting a disabled person is an "easy" way for actors to get credit for what is seen as "difficult" portrayals. Yet, this can also be viewed cynically as cheap "stunt acting".

But, what does cinema throughout history say about the experience of living with disabilities? What constitutes a "positive" portrayal vs. a "negative" one?

Group Name: B Movies - B is for better
Group Description:
B movies are like the original Not Ready for Primetime Players--funny, brave, brainless, learned, rowdy, rough, ribald, and dangerous.

B movies can be like a seven dollar bottle of champagne, miles away from the real thing but every bit as fun. (Semi-Pro)

They can be like absinthe, so bizarre you wonder if you're actually enjoying yourself. Nobody else will be able to tell you. (Eraserhead)

They can be like moonshine. Lightning in a bottle, you wonder how the maker captured it, you wonder if they even know how good it is or if they could do it again. (The Night of the Hunter)

They're like surprise hard cider. Something that's been set aside, and then you find it by accident, take a tentative sip, and it knocks you to the floor! (Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women)

They're like straight Yagermeister, the kind with deerblood and mercury in it. An acquired taste that never lets you forget how dangerous it is, and others can't fathom why you're in love with it. (Wicker Man--1974).

Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Again it's kind of an arbitrary comparison I know, but I still thought it was interesting how many Andersons there were as famous directors. I know Roy Andersson has an extra "s" in it, but as far as I know it's pronounced the same. Please vote only once in each poll. Some of the movies from these directors: Lindsay Anderson - This Sporting Life, If...., O Lucky Man! Paul Thomas Anderson - Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood Paul W.S. Anderson - Event Horizon, Resident Evil, AVP: Alien vs. Predator Wes Anderson - Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Roy Andersson - A Swedish Love Story, Songs from the Second Floor, You, the Living
For most of us, the worst we see is extreme heat, heavy downpours or blankets of snow; those unfortunate others that must endure hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other outrageous meteorological conditions are a sorry bunch indeed. And it is these events that have been the focus of many a summer blockbuster as well as this week's theme. The first film that comes to mind for me is Twister. This was another film like Independence Day that garnered much attention for the budget it required to make and the phenomenal (at that time and surprisingly still today) visual effects that filled it. Despite a good amount of cheese from the soapy love triangle between Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and Jamie Gertz, the film succeeds in the growing tension of the impending twisters and the sense of dread the audience endures as this crazy group of tornado chasers does the unthinkable and purposely heads towards danger. Another film that comes to mind is Hard Rain. I have to admit I don't recall the film that well, but do recall how much I loved the fact that Morgan Freeman was playing the villain. Something to the effect of a large scale crime being committed during a catastrophic flood in a Midwestern town and only Christian Slater can stop it. Definitely need to see this one again. One area where the natural disaster genre needs some definite help is with volcanoes. I can only think of two: Dante's Peak and the aptly named Volcano. Both with relatively decent leading men, Pierce Brosnan and Tommy Lee Jones, but both loaded with laughable impossibilities and storylines that make Uwe Boll seem like Orson Welles. So, let's incur the wrath of Mother Nature and get talkin' this week!
Body: I just watched Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour myself. Really good stuff, but not so much to say about it. It was my second Bunuel after The Discreet Charm of the Bourgousie, which I also like a lot, and am not sure what to really say about it. If feel like talking about what you've watched lately, do so here.
Body: If you wanted to pair two movies (not sequels) together what movies would you watch together and why? I'd pair The Bear with Grizzly Man. The Bear is a story of how an older grizzly takes care of a young bear who las lost his mother and how they just want to get along and wouldn't bother people at all if it wasn't for the mean hunters who are after them. Werner Herzog takes documentary footage from a man who was a self taught expert on bears, before he was eaten by them, and turned it into Grizzly Man. The other pairing I have would be F for Fake and The Hoax. In F for Fake, Orson Welles interviews Clifford Irving, a journalist who spent a fair amount of time interviewing a famous art forger, who could never be convicted. The Hoax tells the story of Irving a few years later when he created forged Howard Hughes diaries and sold them for fun and profit. What pairs do you have?
Body: Its awards season again so we are rapidly finding out which movies everyone loved, but that begs the questions, which ones sucked the most? Lets face it, 2008 left us with a bumper crop of craptacular films. For every Dark Knight there were a dozen Disaster Movies. What are your nominations? *Bonus: it would be fun to divide this into categories, like a real awards show such as... worst cinematography worst picture worst screenplay worst actor/actress worst soundtrack worst foreign film etc... Feel free to categorize your nominations, but don't feel obligated. Can't wait to hear everyone's picks!
Body: The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things Directed by Asia Argento. Starring Asia Argento, Peter Fonda, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Jimmy Bennett. Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Did anyone listen to this week's Filmcouch?................ No?? Well, I did. It was good. They talked quite a bit about horror movies and they actually touched on something I've been thinking about using for a Weekly Theme for a while now. They mentioned women in horror films and the stereotypical shriek so often heard at the moment of their imminent peril. Well, I'd like to talk about a broader topic. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's right, I wanna hear about all those "GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF" moments that have somehow become a part of film culture in general. Do any women actually act like this? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ How about Betty Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Or one can't forget Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby. Also, the third act of a very old film called Häxan takes a very interesting turn that fits this theme. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. OK your turn. Do you have a favorite moment. Or do y'all just hate this whole idea? I wanna hear it.
Body: It's December! Guess what that means!!! Since Spout saw fit to make a banner for our group on the Groups page, I thought it was only fair to start our 2009 buzz thread and get the juices flowing. You know, one of our four major predictors, the Critics Choice Awards, has its nominations being announced tomorrow by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, followed closely by the Golden Globes and SAG. Keep up to date here on all of the lists and nominees as they get announced. Get ready to discuss the awards season. I have a feeling we're going to have a doozy this year... the SpoutBlog has already been hitting on some of the short list announcements and the subjects of great speculation, not the least of which include whether or not Heath Ledger will posthumously be nominated for any award for his Joker portrayal in The Dark Knight. Also - is Wall-E good enough to be nominated for Best Picture (I think Animated Feature is in the bag). Also, now that it's after Thanksgiving, we're seeing the awards season push of films. Any interest you this year? Let's live up to our hype and get to buzzing. After all, it's the most wonderful time of the year for us Oscar fans! :-)
:-)</spout:body>

Body: After much neglect I am determined to make Trailer Park a more active group. I thought that a Top 10 List of trailers released in 2008 might be an interesting start. The trailers that I have chosen are those elite few that have not only kept my attention but made me gush afterwards about how exciting the film will be once it is released. Not only that, but have sought them out on the internet or on my phone to watch again and share with friends. Here we go: Top 10 Trailers of 2008 10.) Zack and Miri Make a Porno - The title alone made this trailer a must see while cameos by Traci Lords and staples in the Askewniverse and Team Apatow got all the cool kids watching. 9.) The Dark Knight - Everyone was searching for this trailer months before its release due to the death of Heath Ledger. Fortunately the trailer did not disappoint and the film became one of the most profitable ever. 8.) Twilight - To many this trailer came and went, but to that subset of the populace obsessed with the novels, Twilight was THE trailer to watch over and over and over . . . . 7.) Australia - The stunning visuals along with a shirtless Hugh Jackman and stunning Nicole Kidman made this trailer one to talk about around the water cooler. Unfortunately many found the feature lacking. 6.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Pretty much a given. Either you're a fan or you're not, but you have to admit that the films keep getting better and better. Trailers included. 5.) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - The subject of the film eluded most until the first trailer showed us a diminutive old man that looked surprisingly like Brad Pitt and a gorgeous Cate Blanchett doing pirouettes in the moonlight. Sure enough this trailer did its job. 4.) Watchmen - When this trailer finally found its way onto the internet, ever geek went into ultra nerd mode and spent a good day dissecting the trailer to see that it matched the amazing graphic novel it is based on. The trailer has that great Smashing Pumpkins song playing and just enough is teased in front of our faces to make us buy our tickets to the first showing right now. 3.) He's Just Not That Into You - A huge ensemble cast for this flick but surprisingly the star power takes a back seat to the lesser-knowns in this cutesy rom-com trailer. 2.) X-Men Origins: Wolverine - After the horror that was X3, I was terrified by the thought of another X-Men movie being eviscerated by a faux-comic book loving screenwriter. But alas, the trailer looks accurate to the source material and the explosion of superheroes and villains just made me all giddy. 1.) Revolutionary Road - Utterly spellbinding, this trailer is its own magnificent short film. The combination of that haunting piano and the powerful Nina Simone rattle the viewer to the bone and make this trailer my best of 2008. So what trailers did you all like this past year?
Body: So, every week at Spout we watch a movie and discuss it. Sounds fun, no? Well, it is. However, selecting the movie every week is not without it's challenges and as the lucky person who fills up our queue, I feel a lot of pressure to meet several requirements that often seem conflicting. 1) The movie needs to be one which we would not normally watch. The point is to be stretched outside of our movie comfort zone. 2) If you pick a really tough movie that ends in a really uncomfortable way every week, people will stop coming to watch. 3) There is a wide spectrum of movie preferences/tolerances present at Spout. We aren't all the movie freaks that you would expect. Many of us consider ourselves to be fairly average in our movie knowledge and preferences. Often, watching something with subtitles can seem like a challenge. 4) It needs to be short. We can't spend more then 2 hours on a movie out of our work day. So yeah, we are looking for short/normal length movies that will stretch us, but won't make the average movie goer want to run and hide every week at movie time. I greatly anticipate your suggestions. the unpopular movie-picker, Christi
Body: What we have here is a list of quotes most people think are actual film quotes. Some of them are in fact from a film, some of them aren't at all, and some of them are darn close but not quite accurate. Its up to you to rack your brain and figure out which of these are true and which are false. First person to get the most right before January 9th wins a sweet Spout swag pack! "Do you feel lucky, punk?" (Dirty Harry, 1971) "What we've got here is a failure to communicate." (Coolhand Luke, 1967) "Come with me if you want to live!" (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, 1990) "Play it again, Sam." (Casablanca, 1942) "May the Force be with you." (Star Wars, 1977) "Say hello to my little friend!" (Scarface, 1983) "Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson?" (The Graduate, 1967) "Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" (Snow White, 1937) "Houston, we've had a problem." (Apollo 13, 1995) "I love the smell of napalm in the morning..." (Apocalypse Now, 1979) "Mama always said, life is like a box of chocolates..." (Forrest Gump, 1994) "If you build it, they will come." (Field of Dreams, 1987) "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." (Gone with the Wind, 1939) "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!" (Wizard of Oz, 1939) "I want to suck your blood!" (Dracula, 1931) "You had me at hello." (Jerry Maguire, 1996)
Body: I wasn't really sure what you call this theme. But basically, I'm talking about those great films that start out with a simple plan, that slowly and surely gets more and more screwed up as the story goes along. Many time (but not always) these are 'heist gone wrong' films, such as Stanley Kubrick's The Killing. Or John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle Sam Raimi used this in his very aptly titled A Simple Plan. And my favorite filmmakers, the Brothers Coen have used this beautifully in Blood Simple and Fargo. Whatch'all think?? I love watching films like this. They are usually a bit more formulaic than what I typically like but there's just something about it that I really like. More importantly, do you have a name for it?
Body: As a cat person I've been told that I'm crazy, completely stupid, going to Hell, etc. It seems that the old saying that a dog is man's best friend reverberates strongly for a lot of people, so this week's theme is dedicated to that slobbering mess of fleas and fur: the dog. Was it the dog that made Marley & Me such a hit? Did you rent the latest Beethoven sequel? Somebody is watching them! Did Benji make you cry like a baby? Was Best in Show disturbingly bad or a work of genius? It's a new year so let's get it started with a bang, or rather, a bark!
Post Date: 1/12/2009 10:39:04 AM
Body: Okay, now I can't wait to see The Clone Returns Home. The idea is this: when an astronaut named Kohei dies on a space mission, his superiors create a clone (that I'll call K2) who's supposed to have a fully "regenerated" body and memory. Only there's a problem with K2's memory: Kohei's twin brother died in their childhood, and these memories overwhelm K2. I recommend reading the description, which is really interesting. What interests me most is that K2 unexpectedly dwells on the childhood memories of the brother's death. It seems that scientists could reproduce the data of Kohei's memories, but not all the blood, sweat and tears that went into dealing with them. This makes me think about grief, about how the only way around it is through it, and I'll be interested to see if the movie implies that Kohei himself had never adequately confronted his grief. The Clone Returns Home makes sci-fi seem like the perfect arena for themes like this. When talking to people about your favorite stories, do you ever find that others may seem interested until they figure out it's sci-fi or horror or fantasy? Then they suddenly get this superior look in their eye? That would happen to me when I'd tell people I thought World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War was the best new novel I'd read in years. What are stories you've been looked down on for thinking they were great?
Body: I know the feeling of going to see a movie that is supposedly good, only to spend $8 on it and have it suck. Thats not fun. But does anyone else occasionally hit the second-run theatre for a flick that is guaranteed to be laughably awful? The kind where parts that are clearly not mean to be funny are the most hilarious part of the movie? I know I've done it more than once. Heck, I even own 'The Fast and the Furious', and paid to see 'Stick It' in the theatre. You can't top the terrible one-liners in either, in my opinion. It makes for some great post-movie conversation and memorable and oft-quoted lines among friends. Anyone else have a closet fascination with the terribly awful?
Body: Hey there, I was thinking of maybe switching up format a bit and starting a thread that's genre specific. I don't know about you all, but some times it's easier for me to just think of a genre that I am interested in rather than to try and follow a template for getting a recommendation. So, recently I have been most interested in historical drama, but every time I go to a auto-generating recommendation engine I seem to get a bunch of films I have already seen. I have a hard time believing that I have exhausted the Historical Drama library, so I thought I would ask you all for some of your favorites or if you know of any lesser-known movies that you wouldn't typically see in a rec. engine.
Body: I have seen a lot of disaster movies, some more likely to happen than others. For example, Armageddon, was, in my opinion, ridiculous. But then again, so is anything directed by Michael Bay. Others have seemed more probable, such as Deep Impact, although the acting left something to be desired. Oh well, what disaster movies do you think are more probable than others?
