Group Name: B Movies - B is for better
Group Description:
B movies are like the original Not Ready for Primetime Players--funny, brave, brainless, learned, rowdy, rough, ribald, and dangerous.

B movies can be like a seven dollar bottle of champagne, miles away from the real thing but every bit as fun. (Semi-Pro)

They can be like absinthe, so bizarre you wonder if you're actually enjoying yourself. Nobody else will be able to tell you. (Eraserhead)

They can be like moonshine. Lightning in a bottle, you wonder how the maker captured it, you wonder if they even know how good it is or if they could do it again. (The Night of the Hunter)

They're like surprise hard cider. Something that's been set aside, and then you find it by accident, take a tentative sip, and it knocks you to the floor! (Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women)

They're like straight Yagermeister, the kind with deerblood and mercury in it. An acquired taste that never lets you forget how dangerous it is, and others can't fathom why you're in love with it. (Wicker Man--1974).

Starring Asia Argento, Peter Fonda, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Jimmy Bennett. Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: LOL Directed by Joe Swanberg. Starring Joe Swanberg, Kevin Bewersdorf, C. Mason Wells, Tipper Newton, Brigid Reagan. The constant need to be plugged-in and connected threatens to crash the real life operating system of three technologically obsessed twenty-somethings in director Joe Swanberg's humorous meditation on the relationship between man and machine in modern society. Tim does computer work for a living, but he also lives for his computer. Unfortunately his inability to snap the lid closed on his laptop is rapidly alienating his girlfriend Ada, who recognizes Tim's apparent inability to communicate with other people without the buffer of technology. Meanwhile, as struggling musician Alex obsesses over a girl he met on an adult website, flesh-and-blood girl named Walter does her best to make her attraction to Alex known. Lastly, Chris has transferred from New York to Chicago due to the demands of his job, making a long distance relationship with his east coast girlfriend Greta increasingly difficult to maintain. Though the pair talks constantly on their cell-phones while also sending cell-phone pictures to one and other, neither Chris nor Greta can deny that their reliance on technology in sustaining their relationship is no substitute for the living, breathing warmth of human companionship. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: What are your favorite black and white films made after a time when color had become the norm? Since I'm not sure exactly when that was (that could be an interesting thing to discuss here as well), I'm going to say 1970. I can actually think of a lot more than 5, so I'm going to say more than that, but I think that's fair and allowable. 1. I'm clumping all of Jim Jarmusch's B&W films together, which is nearly half of them I think: Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Dead Man, Coffee and Cigarettes. 2. The Man Who Wasn't There. The Coen brothers' tribute to film noir. 3. The Elephant Man. My favorite Lynch film (even though I've only seen three). 4. Ed Wood. It HAD to be in B&W. 5. OK, I can't pick 5, so these all tie for 5th. Clerks, Pi, Young Frankenstein, Raging Bull, Following, Good Night, and Good Luck. Ok, I have a few more I'd like to mention, but I'll hold off for some discussion. There are several that I'm expecting a lot of people to list.
Body: Ten CanoesDirected by Rolf de Heer. Starring Crusoe Kurddal, Jamie Dayindi Gulpilil Dalaithngu, Richard Birrinbirrin, Peter Minygululu, Frances Djulibing, Jamie Gulpilil. A man teaches his younger brother an important lesson through an ancient fable in this period comedy-drama shot in Australia, and the first feature film made in the Aboriginal language of Ganalbingu. As narrator David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu sets up the story, we watch a group of tribesmen led by elder Minygululu (Peter Minygululu) set out on an expedition to gather bark for canoe building and collect the precious eggs of the magpie geese. It has become clear to Minygululu that his younger brother Dayindi (Jamie Dayindi Gulpilil Dalaithngu) is infatuated with the youngest of his three wives, and Minygululu wants to be sure Dayindi doesn't do something he'll regret later on. To teach his brother a lesson, Minygululu shares with him a long story about Ridjimiraril (Crusoe Kurddal), a warrior who finds his brother Yeeralparil (also played by Jamie Dayindi Gulpilil Dalaithngu) has become a rival for the affections of his bride. However, while Minygululu's story caries a clear message for his brother, it also goes on long enough with enough twists, turns and digressions that it gives Dayindi little opportunity to get into mischief during the trip. Body: The Party's Over Directed by Donovan Leitch, Rebecca Chaiklin. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Actors and political activists come together to take a long, hard look at the State of the Union during the 2000 U.S. Presidential election in this documentary, a follow-up to 1993's The Last Party, in which actor Robert Downey Jr. followed the 1992 presidential campaign. In The Last Party 2000, with Robert Downey Jr. unavailable due to drug convictions (he does make a brief appearance, and his legal problems as well as the current state of American drug laws are discussed), Philip Seymour Hoffman takes his place as he visits the 2000 Democratic and Republican National Conventions and talks to politicians and activists both famous and obscure as a pitched battle is fought between supporters of democratic candidate Al Gore, republican nominee George W. Bush, and the many voices who believed neither candidate represented a worthwhile or reasonable choice. Along with Downey and Hoffman, celebrities speaking out on the issues in this film include Courtney Love, Rosie O'Donnell, Reese Witherspoon, and David Crosby; the rock band Stone Temple Pilots also appear at a political rally. The Last Party 2000 was directed by actor and musician Donovan Leitch, who served as a producer on the first film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Directed by Kristian Fraga. All politics is local in this hilarious burlesque of a documentary following a tightly-run mayoral race in the small town of Bogota, New Jersey. When the much-reviled--and legally blind--Republican incumbent Steven Lonegan boldly announces he will run for re-election, the citizens of Bogota go on the offensive to unseat him. Enter Democrat Fred Pesce, coaxed from retirement to share the ticket. With his health in question, and his politics compared to those of Tony Soprano, the field is wide open for sight-challenged town booster and former local football hero Dave Musikant to step in as a long-shot write-in independent candidate--officially making it the only mayoral race in the nation where two of the three candidates are legally blind! Add to the mix the machinations of Jesse "The Body" Ventura`s campaign manager, and Anytown, USA resonates as an all-too-familiar look at the charade of partisan politics in our increasingly polarized nation. ~www.filmmovement.com
Body: I pick two and predict that one of them will be made into a movie. One Foot in Eden by Ron Rash. This is a wonderful short novel by a South Carolina writer/poet. It just begs to be filmed. The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I loved this book and wept at the end of it. With a Pulitzer to its credit, I see this one turning into a screenplay soon, if it hasn't been already. What book would you like to see made into a movie?
