Body: The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things Directed by Asia Argento. Starring Asia Argento, Peter Fonda, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Jimmy Bennett. Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: CleanDirected by Olivier Assayas. Starring Maggie Cheung, Béatrice Dalle, Nick Nolte, Don McKellar, Jeanne Balibar. A woman throws herself into a last-ditch struggle to conquer her demons in this gritty drama from director Olivier Assayas. Lee Hauser (James Johnston) is a faded rock star who lives with his wife, Emily Wang (Maggie Cheung), the former host of a European music video show, in a small town in Western Canada. Both Lee and Emily have been battling drug addiction for years, and when Lee finally dies of an OD, Emily finds herself charged with possession of heroin and ends up spending six months in jail. Lee and Emily's son, Jay (James Dennis), has been living with his paternal grandparents, Albrecht (Nick Nolte) and Rosemary (Martha Henry), and while Emily is eager to see her son after getting out of jail, Albrecht persuades her that she needs to get herself clean before she can reconnect with Jay. Determined to get off methadone, Emily relocates to France, where she scares up a job as a waitress and moves in with her old friend Elena (Béatrice Dalle). Emily's attempts to start a new career and stay off drugs prove to be an uphill battle, and she doesn't appear to be winning her fight when she learns that Albrecht and Jay will be accompanying Rosemary to London for medical treatment when Rosemary contracts a serious illness -- and that Albrecht is considering making a side trip to Paris. Clean was screened in competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Although Erickson and company are often credited as being among the forbearers of psychedelic inspired acid rock, Erickson battled serious drug problems and mental illness throughout much of his life. An aimless 20-year-old with a penchant for following the rules receives a mysterious set of instructions that lead him down a path from which he may never return in director Géla Babluani's tense tale of death and chance. Sébastien has come into possession of a train ticket and a mysterious set of instructions. Bored by his uneventful existence and hungering for something new, Sébastien boards the outbound train and takes his first bold steps into an unknown future. But the world can be a cruel and unforgiving place filled with unfeeling men to whom human life means little more than a lost wager, and if Sébastien is to make it through his harrowing journey alive he must keep his wits about him and pray that luck is on his side. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: Directed by Tom Jackson. Out of Balance is an expose of the largest, most powerful company in the world. Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth was a call to arms concerning the consequences of impending global warming. Out of Balance goes one step further: While acknowledging the need for drastic change, director Tom Jackson clearly points the finger at ExxonMobil for using its immense power to block efforts to wean us from our addiction to oil.
Body: I tried posting this a minute ago but it was all currupted gobbledy-gook, so I'm trying again. Anyone read World War Z? I mentioned it in The Casting Futon and wanted some opinions about casting the movie (which is in pre-production as we speak). In the audiobook each character was read by a different actor. And not no-name yutzes, we're talking Henry Rollins, Mark Hamill, Jurgen Prochnow just to name a few. It was very well done. Usually I read books the old fashioned way but this idea struck me and so I "read" it the lazy way and am glad I did. As far as the soon-to-be film goes I'd like to see them stick with the audiobook cast (for the most part at least). Anyone have any ideas? [addendum: i apologize for the crappy layout, but i only seem to be able post in a single paragraph form despite spacing everything properly]
Australian playwright Tony McNamara makes his directorial debut with the offbeat comedy The Rage in Placid Lake, adapted from his own play The Cafe Latte Kid. In his first feature film, indie rocker Benny Lee stars as a troubled teen named Placid Lake. The child of new-agey eccentric parents (Garry McDonald and Miranda Richardson), Placid spends his childhood getting picked on by bullies. Fortunately, he finds friendship with classmate Gemma Taylor (Rose Byrne), whose father (Nicholas Hammond) pressures her to excel in school. After Placid shocks the school with his dark student film, he gets into an accident that lands him in the hospital. Upon his recovery, he reinvents himself as an conservative insurance agent and engages in an affair of sorts with emotionally detached co-worker Jane (Saskia Smith). The Rage in Placid Lake was screened at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide
Body: I was having a conversation with my wife about Four Eyed Monsters a couple days ago and I think the reason we fell in love with the movie, the podcast, the mythos of it all is that we actually had a similar experience. We were young, in love, and everything felt done and played out. We wanted to forge "our own reality" and started writing notes to each other, drawing cartoons, sharing our experience non-verbally. I think that part of this can come with immaturity, always wanting to do things counter to social norms. But it also is something that was definitely made more powerful because of our intense connection to each other. Communicating creatively made our relationship grow even faster. Hey, look at us now, almost 10 years later... married, house, 2 cats, and working at the same place. I was wondering if other Spouters had a similar experience or could share their own experience with strong relationships and bonding moments. Thanks, V
Body: This is a great film by Cory McCabe (whose band, The Billy Nayer Show, also provides the music for) about an Astronaut on a mission to deliver a cat to a bar on the asteroid Ceres. Thus begins a huge chain of events that propels him across our universe and into the hands of Professor Hess. Hess is a sociopathic killer who will only slaughter those he has no beef with, oh, and it's always his birthday. The stark imagery and stream of conciousness apsects of the film are heavily influenced by Lynch's Eraserhead. The film features a dust-bowl era production design, with the Astronaut traversing space in a converted steam engine. Through clever cutting and minimal resources McCabe creates some really effective space effects. It's a sci-fi, space western psuedo musical dreamed up by a bunch of guys in a bar.I originally saw this when it was making its way around college campuses back in 2002. It came out on DVD a couple years back, but I haven't really seen too many people getting excited about it. It's inventive and hilarious.Has anyone seen this?http://www.americanastronaut.com/home.shtml
Body: recently i have spoken to people that work at video stores and talked to some people that like to rent current movies of this genre;i have also spoken to friends and family and it seems to me (from my point of view),that this is a hard genre to please people i know ;Movies that i have rented the past 4 mths or at least for the year 2007 in this genre have not been very good;Either i ,my family or friends did not find a movie that i or all of us liked. The only ones that i or the consensus(my family and friends) liked are:masters of horror: Pick Me Up (2006 season 1)and Family (2006 season 2)Can anyone else offer their insight or and have movie they would like to recommend? (foreign-older foreign flicks count cause it takes a couple yrs. for a lot of foreign to be easily available in u.s. and indie flicks count also)
Body: The Great Match Directed by Gerardo Olivares. This film tells the adventurous story of three heroes, none of whom have ever met, but who nevertheless have two things in common: firstly, they all live in the farthest-flung corners of the planet and, secondly, they are all three determined to see on TV the final in Japan of the 2002 World Cup between Germany and Brazil. The protagonists in this 'global' comedy are: a family of Mongolian nomads, a camel caravan of Tuareg in the Sahara, and a group of Indios in the Amazon. They all live about 500 kilometres away from the next town – and the next television – making their task a particularly daunting one. Nevertheless, these inventive people possess the resourcefulness and the willpower to achieve their goal. ~www.filmmovement.com
Body: I have been thinking of adding new sections. I have decided that one would very much work in the group: Nature of Humanity. The idea of the group is to have documentries and historical retellings, or just plain visual metaphore about the way humans are good or bad. Things that come to mind is 2001, Clock Work Orange, The Yes Men, The Coperation, Koyaanisqatsi, ect.I would just like to know what the current group thinks before I approve anything. -- Sidepocket
