Body: Just that. In horror-dom, there seems to be this mandatory bravura, this stolid attitude of "that wasn't scary" or "that was lame." I believe, however, if you can find the chinks in this armor, you can pry the plates apart and find what really gets beneath someone's skin, what really scares them. Case in point: in Saw II, one of the most squirm-inducing sequences for a lot of viewers, despite the brutal violence and gushing gore was the infamous needle pit that Xavier so courteously treated Amanda to. A lot of people simply were taken to the edge by that scene, deeply affected. I, on the other hand, didn't bat an eyelash. Now, I get through horror in part because I know it's not real (save those tasteless Italians...) and that, moreover, I know how they do it. There is one thing - only one - that puts me in my place and makes me realize I'm not invulnerable to the horrors of Horror. An instance in Dead Men Walking speaks to this end and in fact lays out my feelings perfectly while also serving as a gruesome example:0:35:40. It’s time I come clean about something here: I can take just about bloody (ahem) anything in horror films, but I’ll have to face that when it comes to crap being puked up, thrown up, chucked up, what have you, my stomach starts to loosen and it takes will power to keep it down. Mostly I’m O.K., but if I already am sick (with flu, not a biotoxin) or I’ve just eaten a big meal, the case becomes stronger to stop from hurling myself. Now, on with the gore. The other two of the infected trio earlier barf blood all over their escorts while a third (and this is where it gets really disgusting) is foaming up with a pinkish mixture of some unholy slime that oozes down his face like lava from a science fair volcano. Eventually, everybody in the mess hall, as it were, is puking blood all over everyone else, the entire affair one absolutely stomach-turning episode of ungodly sickness. SR: SSSSS I have always been gastrointestinally uneasy and when I see notable scenes like the one I'm thinking about as the subject of this particular post, it leaves me a bit uneasy. It is in City of Living Dead and it is a spot that seared itself in my memory forever. Giallo and general Italian horror fans, based on what I've already said, will know exactly what it is, but for everyone's edification (or vile enjoyment) I'll reproduce here how I said it on my site:“THE BODY PURGING” 0:31:30. A girl’s eyes start to bleed…then it gets really sick. She starts to foam atthe mouth as if rabid, the foam quickly turning red and then into strange things: intestines – yards and yards of them – and then organs of several shapes, sizes and colors. In time, the girl vomits up her innards while the specter of the suicidal priest stares her down. After the body purging, a hand reaches into the boy’s hair and grabs out a chunk of his brains, leaving a grapefruit-sized hole. SR: ããããã That left me feeling ill, like I might be sick myself. That, I must say, is rare. In fact, it never happens. Nothing I have ever seen that does not involve projectile or otherwise unusual puking has prompted a physical reponse like this. A third and final moment in this vein (ahem) in my grim horror-watching career comes from Wishmaster 3:0:54:12. Don’t eat prior to watching this scene, I really mean it. Anne befriends the Djinn, tragically unaware of course of who he really is. She wished earlier to lose some weight. If you know anything about the series, it’s that the Djinn always grants wishes, but never in the manners intended. Anne indeed loses weight, a la City of the Living Dead. Her nose and areas around her mouth start to bleed, events that the Djinn describes as “a little liposuction.” As she starts to spit up a liquid, molten mixture of fat and blood, the Djinn goes on about how she always considered her stomach a problem area. In a few seconds that too is on the floor and the waxy substance she’d been spitting up for a while continues. As Diana steadfastly refuses to make her wishes, aware of the repercussions if she did, Anne continues to waste away, her entire body’s worth of fat shriveling up, her skin taking on a gruesome new complexion. Eventually the Djinn talks her into wishing for him to relieve her of the pain, naturally intending for the process to be reversed. Instantly, however, all her joints go limp and she’s D.O.A. SR: SSSSS So, now that I've come clean about what grosses me out, how 'bout you?
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Again it's kind of an arbitrary comparison I know, but I still thought it was interesting how many Andersons there were as famous directors. I know Roy Andersson has an extra "s" in it, but as far as I know it's pronounced the same. Please vote only once in each poll. Some of the movies from these directors: Lindsay Anderson - This Sporting Life, If...., O Lucky Man! Paul Thomas Anderson - Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood Paul W.S. Anderson - Event Horizon, Resident Evil, AVP: Alien vs. Predator Wes Anderson - Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Roy Andersson - A Swedish Love Story, Songs from the Second Floor, You, the Living
Body: Gabe over at Videogum has been doing a series for a little over a year now called "Hunt for the Worst Movie of All Time" that is pretty stinking great. He takes suggestions from the readers and gives hilarious in-depth commentary on what he sees, complete with film clips and animated GIFs. While I'd argue with some of his picks ("Rachel Getting Married" is on the coming soon list), sometimes it's just fun to read his ranting. Has anyone else been reading this? Thoughts?
Body: Alright. Just admit 5 films you're almost embarrased to love so much. 5. The Burbs - Yes this is completely nostalgic, and it sucked, but I rented it the other day and still love it. 4.Casino Royal - I hate James Bond films, and everything they stand for, but I kind of liked this one. 3.Snakes on a Plane - I didn't have this much fun in a theater in a long time. Since Slither. 2.Garden State - Yeah it was sentimental. Yes it was sappy. But it had decent music, and It made me feel good. 1. The Lost Boys - Strange that there are two Cory Feldman films in this list. But I LOVE this film. Kiefer at his finest. And don't forget the grandpa mobile at the end. Everybody I show this too absolutely hate it. So it is a guilty pleasure.
Body: Manda Bala Directed by Jason Kohn. Starring Jader Barbalho, Claudio Fonteles, Helbio Dias, Juarez Avelar, Paulo Lamarao, Mario Lucio Avelar. Brazil is a nation where political and economic corruption and violent crime are a way of life for many, and filmmaker Jason Kohn examines some of the more unusual ways they manifest themselves in this documentary. In Manda Bala (Send a Bullet), Kohn's subjects include a plastic surgeon whose practice is dominated by the victims of kidnappers who lost their ears to their captors; a political figure who uses his frog ranch as a cover for illegal business operations which have made him a multi-millionaire; and an auto customizer whose specialty is bullet-proofing luxury cars. Manda Bala (Send A Bullet) won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: I just saw a trailer for Coraline the other night and was pretty intrigued. I believe they said it was "hand drawn digital animation"--almost seems like a contradiction of terms but intriguing none-the-less. Anyone heard much about this or seen it? Body: I had the great opportunity while in Scotland this last month to check out "Pontypool" at the Edinburgh film festival. I know this movie only just opened in the states, and I'm pretty sure its release is fairly limited, but I wanted to know if anyone had seen this yet, or wants to, or has any thoughts about it. I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of this movie and think everyone should go check it out. I think it's a really refreshing take on the conventions of the zombie genre, and probably my favorite new zombie movie (that I've seen) since "28 Days Later." Here's a link to the trailer
Body: In Seattle this weekend there is going to be a zombie walk where they are trying to get as many people as possible to break the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest zombie walk ever. I will not be a zombie, my friends think I am strange enough, but I will be doing something fun. On Friday night, the Fremont outdoor movies here in Seattle, is going to be showing Shaun of the Dead and having a best zombie costume contest. So this should be really fun! Just wondering if any other towns had things like this? I know around Halloween it is really a zombie fest. I've also heard that with Michael Jackson's death, there are places that are doing a "Thriller" walk and dance. Anything else happening or will happen one day in your area?
Body: Yes, I know this is rather belated (sorry for my extended absence from the boards--the KU J-school will do that to you), but I feel duty-bound to start a discussion of "Up," the latest slice of fried gold to be added to the Pixar canon. I thought this was a wonderfully whimsical, funny, and surprisingly poignant film. I don't know about you guys, but there were a couple of times where it got pretty dusty in the theater for me (read: tears running down my cheeks as I tried to keep from showing my emotion). What did you guys think? Favorite parts? I'm partial to the "cone of shame." Did anyone get to see this in 3D? My second-rate local 8-screen theater only showed it in regular 'ol 2D, so I didn't get the full effect. Let's discuss!
Body: Occassionally there comes a book that I never, never, NEVER want to see turned into a movie. Watchmen is one of those books. It's something I've tried, to little success, to explain to friends who always assume that, as a comic book fan and Alan Moore fan, I'd naturally be really excited about the prospect of a Watchmen film. However, instead of just pointing to the horrible track record of Moore adaptations, I try to explain how wrong the entire idea of a movie is.Watchmen is, even more so than Spiderman or Batman or Superman, a comic book. That of course goes without saying, but it's worth stating because Watchmen is a comic book to it's core. There has never been, and possibly never will be, a subject more suited to it's medium. Watchmen NEEDS to be experienced as a comic book. The format is as important and integral to the story as any other characters. Removing that format removes a lot of the story's import.Last night I watched the comic-con panel from 2007 where director Zack Snyder came out and answered a few questions. It did little to assay my fears, even if Snyder came off as a generally well-intentioned person. I don't mean that as an insult, I mean to say that Snyder seems to really want to make this movie, and not just for monetary reasons. However he also doesn't seem to know what he's talking about, exactly. However, I have to give it up for a cast that includes Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan and Jackie Earle Haley as Rorshach, which is just awesome(a lot of the cast is younger than their characters in the comic, but Snyder says they were cast at an age where they could age them up or down depending on the flashback instead of hiring several actors per part). Now, I'm not saying Watchmen can't be a good movie, and certainly I have as much faith in Zack Snyder as I would in any other person(politics aside, 300 was a perfect adaptation of that comic work), I'm just not sure a movie could ever do such an epic story any form of justice. Either way, we'll have a bit of a wait to find out; the movie isn't scheduled for release until 2009.
Body: I've been meaning to do this for a while now. Every week I think I'm gonna do it, I find something that happens to be more relevent to my current week. Well, I guess this is as good a week as any. Let's talk about Austrailian flicks. I rewatched Chopper the other night and I must say, I don't remember it being as brilliant as I found it this time around. I also usually like to mention The Interview when talking about Austrailian movies. This is primarily a mindf*ck movie that depends wholly on the performance from Hugo Weaving. It absolutly doesn't fail in this regard. If you haven't seen it, I would highly suggest taking a look. Oh yeah, has anyone out there ever seen Bad Boy Bubby?!?!......... Speaking of mindf*cks. This is one of the most disturbing things I've seen on my tv screen ever. But I think I kinda liked it? I'm not sure yet.
Body: Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I couldn't find a group on Spout about directors. Great directors. Directors in general. Anything. So for my first post in this group I would like to reveal part of my freakish nature. This might seem like a complete waste of time to many of you but it is just part of my obsession for chronicaling and rating and making lists in regards to movies. I have been working on a personal algorithm to help me calculate who my favorite directors are.If you are interested at all my pathological quirk of developing this algorithm, here is the way I calculated it. I have a list of all of the movies I have seen and most of them I have assigned a rating between 1 and 10. For each director of any movie I have seen I have extracted three points of data.A = the average movie rating of all of the movies I have seen by that directorB = the number of movies I have seen by that directorC - the total number of movies that director has madeJust extracting this data has been difficult. For one I am not counting "shorts" which IMDB classifies as any movie that is less than 45 minutes. I just never rate these films. I find it more difficult to rate a short as compared to a feature length which has more to absorb. Also I do not include movies for which the director has done just one short segment. Then I have to decide if I am going to include movies in which the director has "co-directed" or in which there is more than one director. Also should I count movies in which the director is uncredited? Is there any point in counting movies that the director did that aren't even available anymore? What about movies that the director has rejected after it was made for whatever reason? OK, so these are difficult questions that I will have to decide as I revise my data. But this is the general data for my algorithm. And now for the final formula. The final score I give to each director is calculated like this:((((B*A)+((((A-5.5)*(B/C))+5.5)*(C-B)))/C)+(((B-1)*0.5)*A))/(1+((B-1)*0.5))Ok if you can follow that you might just be as crazy as me. Basically what this means is that directors are penalized to some extent (penalized if they are good but actually get a bonus benefit of the doubt if they actually do suck) for having made movies that I have not seen yet. So the more movies they have made that I haven't seen, the more their score drops. The more movies of theirs I have seen and the higher the percentage both increase the strength of the average score. So far I have only calculated data for directors for whom have at least one 9 or 10 star movie I have seen. I'll add more data for the other directors whose movies I have seen later, but their scores would not be high enough to break into the top 25 or so anyways. Here is my list of top 25 directors of all time based on my algorithm. I am only including directors for whom I have seen more than one of their movies. (I have also removed a few directors that I just didn't consider relevent for whatever personal reasons)1. Joel and Ethan Coen 2. Bruce Robinson 3. Hal Hartley 4. Jim Jarmusch 5. Stanley Kubrick 6. Paul Thomas Anderson 7. Terry Zwigoff 8. Quentin Tarantino 9. Terrence Malick 10. Ming-liang Tsai 11. Terry Gilliam 12. Sergio Leone 13. Whit Stillman 14. Alejandro González Iñárritu 15. Terry Jones 16. Errol Morris 17. Mel Brooks 18. Todd Solondz 19. Robert Zemeckis 20. Wes Anderson 21. Werner Herzog 22. Frank Darabont 23. John R. Cherry III 24. George Lucas 25. Akira KurosawaOk, I'll probably post more geeky lists like this later. But I don't want to turn off more people than I probably already have.
I'll add more data for the other directors whose movies I have seen later, but their scores would not be high enough to break into the top 25 or so anyways. Here is my list of top 25 directors of all time based on my algorithm. I am only including directors for whom I have seen more than one of their movies. (I have also removed a few directors that I just didn't consider relevent for whatever personal reasons)1. Joel and Ethan Coen 2. Bruce Robinson 3. Hal Hartley 4. Jim Jarmusch 5. Stanley Kubrick 6. Paul Thomas Anderson 7. Terry Zwigoff 8. Quentin Tarantino 9. Terrence Malick 10. Ming-liang Tsai 11. Terry Gilliam 12. Sergio Leone 13. Whit Stillman 14. Alejandro González Iñárritu 15. Terry Jones 16. Errol Morris 17. Mel Brooks 18. Todd Solondz 19. Robert Zemeckis 20. Wes Anderson 21. Werner Herzog 22. Frank Darabont 23. John R. Cherry III 24. George Lucas 25. Akira KurosawaOk, I'll probably post more geeky lists like this later. But I don't want to turn off more people than I probably already have.</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>7/18/2007 5:16:34 PM</spout:postdate><spout:body>Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I couldn't find a group on Spout about directors. Body: Here's an easy question just to get some activity going in this group for a change - and sorry about that, but I haven't seen much released lately in the States lately, and I haven't been able to watch many movies in general lately (hence my lack of activity) so we have to look back: what's your favorite British or Britain-inspired film? It can be anything so long as the accent's included, hee hee.I'd say my two favorites are two of my honestly favorite movies of all time: Bridget Jones' Diary (ok, so Renee Zellweger is from Texas, but you don't even notice, most of the time) and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Are they cliche? Maybe, but I watch and quote these repeatedly. I've got loads of others, but these jump to mind. Though I've kind of stopped identifying them as "British" only because I really have seen them so much and so often. Plus, I identify with good ole Bridge, and while I don't identify with the crazy English k-nig-its of Holy Grail, I quote it in conversation quite a bit. You'd be amazed at how many uses there are for lines from this movie.Anyways, discuss your favorites here!
Body: We already got the discussion started on this one over at Horror Movies 101, but for those of you who have seen the original The Last House on the Left (1972), do you have any expectations for the upcoming remake? Is it good that Wes Craven is attached to the film in some capacity instead of a whole slew of new people having their own way with it? If you've seen the trailer already is there any point in watching it since EVERYTHING was given away? Let us know!
Body: Nowadays, the American Dream is tough. Finding a decent paying job. Looking for love. Buying a house. Mowing your lawn. And just when you think you've got it, some jerk has to move into your perfect little neighborhood and ruin it all. You know who I'm talking about. The pyscho mass murderers, the pedophiles, or worse, one of those weird French guys with their creepy accent and stupid looking berets. Whether you're looking out for the safety of your kids (like Sarah Pierce and Brad Adamson in Little Children), suffering from OCD (like Melvin Udall in As Good As It Gets), or just plain racist and homophobic (like Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino and Col. Frank Fitts in American Beauty), there is always some reason to take an overactive interest in your neighbors and plot to drive them out of their homes (or kill them). So with that said, what are your favorite Neighborhood Watch films?
Body: The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (2007) Watch trailer Directed by Cao Hamburger. Starring Caio Blat, Michel Joelsas, Germano Haiut, Daniela Piepszyk, Liliana Castro. A twelve-year old Brazilian boy who longs to see his team win out over Italy in the 1970 World Cup match finds his entire world turned upside down as his left-wing parents are forced into hiding and he is sent to live with his grandfather in Sao Paulo's Bom Retiro district. Though his country is being held in the grip of a military dictatorship and the war in Vietnam is raging abroad, young Mauro can't seem to think about anything else but the upcoming World Cup match between Brazil and Italy. If Jairzinho, Pele, and company can just win their third World Cup title, team Brazil will earn their third star on the strip - a feat that no other team in the history of the sport has ever managed to accomplish. When his Catholic mother and Jewish father are suddenly forced to go "on holiday," young Mauro is swept out of his middle class existence in Minas Gerais and taken to stay with his paternal grandfather in bustling Bom Retiro. A multi-ethnic district in which Jews, Arabs, and Greeks all live side-by-side, Bom Retiro begins to heat up with World Cup fever as things both at home and abroad all seem to be spiraling towards disaster. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide From City Lights. Body: Everyone's had some moment during their childhood when they saw a movie that seriously screwed them up. I'm not talking about the time you accidentally saw something you weren't supposed to (like that regrettable time you watched Friday the 13th at that sleepover in fifth grade). I'm talking about actual family films that, for one reason or another, contained material that made a mark on your young, impressionable self. Think Bambi's mom, or Old Yeller. For me, the definitive "scarring" movie was Toy Story. Yup, the groundbreaking Pixar film about toys that came to life. I remember pretty vividly going to see this with my dad and some family friends when I was six, and my dad telling me the next day (upon noticing my attachment to a new doll I had) that perhaps my other toys were getting jealous that I was spending so much time with the new doll. Boom. Scarred. From that point on, I was unable to sleep with just one stuffed animal when I went to bed. I had to have ALL of them, to make sure they were each getting the same amount of attention. Even today, I have problems getting rid of things I no longer use, or putting old toys in storage because of the resulting sense of guilt. I mean really...WTF? Has anyone else had similar experiences? Were there any movies that profoundly messed you up during childhood? It's time to air out those long-held cinematic traumas!
Boom. It's time to air out those long-held cinematic traumas!</spout:body>

Body: I know the feeling of going to see a movie that is supposedly good, only to spend $8 on it and have it suck. Thats not fun. But does anyone else occasionally hit the second-run theatre for a flick that is guaranteed to be laughably awful? The kind where parts that are clearly not mean to be funny are the most hilarious part of the movie? I know I've done it more than once. Heck, I even own 'The Fast and the Furious', and paid to see 'Stick It' in the theatre. You can't top the terrible one-liners in either, in my opinion. It makes for some great post-movie conversation and memorable and oft-quoted lines among friends. Anyone else have a closet fascination with the terribly awful?
Body: I don't know about you guys, but its one week in and 2009 is looking like another banner year for the Worst Movie Ever discussion fodder. So far, we have Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), where even the "making of" scenes were painful to watch. Karina, always the cynic, seems to agree as well with her latest blog post. And c'mon, Marley and Me is the top film? Followed by Bride Wars? Really? Ugh. I have a feeling this is going to be another disappointing year. Anyone else think so? Or are there any rays of light at the end of the dark tunnel that is the 2009 film year?
Body: I have seen a lot of disaster movies, some more likely to happen than others. For example, Armageddon, was, in my opinion, ridiculous. But then again, so is anything directed by Michael Bay. Others have seemed more probable, such as Deep Impact, although the acting left something to be desired. Oh well, what disaster movies do you think are more probable than others?
Body: We still have a couple of weeks ago, but it's time for our annual discussion (which never gets very far, but I'm an optimist) about which fantasy movies from the past year were our favorites! For reference, as a refresher, use the Fantasy to Look Forward to (2008) list, because this list will disappear once the year does. I realize that some of the entries on that list actually have later release dates. When I take the list away, I'll shuffle some of those around, even if the listed year isn't correct, and research their impending release dates and put them in the appropriate upcoming list. I think I saw maybe four of these this year because I haven't had much time to go to the movie theater. I've mostly been using Netflix and haven't been watching too much fantasy. I gotta say, though, that it's hard to beat Wall-E and The Dark Knight this year. Both films took my breath away in some form or another. What would your picks be? The only rule is that they have to be fantasy! And.....go! :-D
Body: Surreal, absurd, disturbing, or just plain strange movies. I got this idea from a discussion on IMDB, and I believe some movie website or magazine released a list of the top 20 a while back. In terms of overall weirdness, here it goes: 1. Un Chien Andalou The old Bunuel-Dali collaboration. This had me at the part where the eye gets sliced with a razor-blade. It is quite possibly one of the most disturbing images I have ever seen, and it was made in 1929. It is almost unsettlingly bizarre. This easily takes the cake at a whopping 16 minutes. Watching this film makes you realize how warped the human mind can be, and it's amazing. It is where every David Lynch film is originated, and really where the surrealist genre was created. 2. Eraserhead Not much about this film can be explained that hasn't already been said a million times. It is adequate to say that never has anything like it ever been seen, and it began a long and illustrious career of nightmares and dreamscapes. 3. The City of Lost Children This one is not quite surrealism, more like a plot-driven sci-fi nightmare that more than delivers on the absurdities. However, it also makes up for such strange detachment with likeable characters and genuine horror. 4. Brazil Also one of my favorite movies, it is the crowned jewel of Terry Gilliam's catalogue. The way in which the dream sequences are paralleled by Lowry's just as bizarre existence makes this a masterpiece of surrealism. 5. So many to choose from!!!!!! I can't pick this last one. So, I'll make a list of honorable mentions: Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive, Videodrome (and other Cronenberg), Dead Man, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits (and most other Gilliam), 2001, Donnie Darko, all of Guy Maddin's shorts (some of which aren't in the Spout database......), Pi. Considering this is labeled "Top 5 Weirdest movies", I'm afraid to include 8 1/2, since it's not per se "weird", but more dreamy and surrealist, which does not necessarily mean weird in my book. All of the surrealist films I mentioned were really by-the-book WEIRD. Am I wrong here?
Body: If you've paid any attention to the Vampire Cage Match this week at spout.com/vampires, you've noticed Twilight's Robert Pattinson is mopping the floor with every vampire he faces. I could understand his victory over Tom Cruise (Interview With a Vampire), but now that he's crushed Gary Oldman, I think there's something very rotten in Transylvania... The Vampire Cage Match is about finding the ultimate badass vampire, not the Vampire Most Likely to Get Laid This Week! What do you guys think? Can Kate Beckinsale pull through? Body: I want to get a list going of what everyone's favorite film is from 2007. Once everyone's posted their in here I'll start a list up we can share with folks. It doesn't have to be genre specific, and feel free to list the same film more than once if someone beat you to it. I'd like to keep the list to about 10 or 20 films anyway. :) These would all be films that we might recommend if someone asked us to recommend a good film from 2007. (obviously... :) My Pick: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) Feel free to disagree, but I really enjoyed this film. The characters were especially interesting, and it didn't play off like a western.
</spout:body>

Body: ... is Halloween. Everyone knows that. But coming in a close second(or maybe third, Thanksgiving has more pies) is Christmas. No offense to anyone in this group who isn't catholic/christian/baptist or what-have-you. To me Christmas is more traditional than religious, and even if you don't participate in any of the practices and traditions, that goodwill, multicolored, brightly lit houses and festive attitude are infectious. So what are your favorites from childhood, where you would spend this cold winter month huddled in a blanket in front of a warm, roaring television set? Owing to the group's name, we'll limit this to family/children's movies, which unfortunately leaves out Scrooged, Black Christmas, and possibly a Christmas Story. For me, I think it'd have to be The Year Without a Santa Claus. The Rankin/Bass specials all have their charm, and they could probably just be put up there as one great big 'favorite', but YWASC has long been my favorite. And I'll tell you why in two words: Heat Miser. And it's all because of that song. Sure, Cold Miser sang just about the exact same thing, changing only a few words, but he was a little too whiny for me. Plus I think the arrangement of the song fits better with Heat Miser's color scheme. Which is probably the weirdest thing I could say about this feature, but it always seemed to fit Heat Miser better than Cold Miser. But I digress...
Body: I just saw "Australia" with the fam tonight. Not a bad movie, considering the dreck that Baz Luhrmann has put out previously. Actually, when you compare it to "Moulin Rouge" and "Romeo + Juliet" it's pretty great. But, in the context of general cinema, only pretty good. My point (and I do have one) is that while watching this movie, I noticed many many references to other (better) Australian movies, which in turn got me thinking about how much I love Australian cinema. It was more or less my introduction to independent film, so it holds a pretty special place in my heart. I wanted to know if anyone here had particular favorite Aussie films and/or directors. Mine will always be Peter Weir and "Picnic at Hanging Rock." Every time I've watched it with someone, it's been a crazy experience, from the first time I saw it with my parents to a few months ago, when I watched it with my roommate and we both ended up yelling at the screen.
Body: I just got back from seeing "Wall-e," and I thought it was a great balance of thoughtful post-apocalyptic re-imagining, space adventure and cute kid's movie. About a year ago, I wrote in a post regarding "Ratatouille" in another group saying that I wasn't convinced by "Wall-e's" concept. It seemed a little far-fetched. By the time the actual full trailers came out, I had changed my mind a bit, and now that I've seen the movie, I'm a total convert. Any thoughts? Agreement? Disagreement? Let's get talking, people!
