Group Description:
For those who like to ask "what if...?" What if Pulp Fiction had been released in 1975? What if The Matrix we know is a remake; what would the original be like? Beware the cute baby orangutan, he's deadly and on the loose. You can read about him in the "Huxley: scourge or blessing?" entry of the "Movies Thrown Into the Past" discussion.

Group Name: The End - The best films end well.
Group Description: One test of a truly great film is to examine its ending. It's said that the hardest part about painting is knowing when to stop. We all know how most big budget films rely on formulaic storylines and "Hollywood" endings. But even among good films, a promising start looses its value when the film goes nowhere. Too often, they go on too long, meander aimlessly, or just seem unresolved. I don't mean wrapped in a nice little bow, with no questions remaining. I mean where the last five mintues are as compelling as the first – hopefully even more. Having a great ending is a required ingredient for a great film.
Body: If there is one decade that is known for bad b-movies, it would have to be the 70's or arguably the 1980's. Since I'm a sucker for cheap action adventure and horror movies, I've come across a number of less then stellar films. In thinking about your own 1970's movie experiences, what do you feel is the worst movie of the decade?
Body: I was browsing through the Hollywood Lackluster list and someone put Independence Day in as a lackluster. I've seen the film a couple of times and have to vote not guilty on this one. Yes, they sold out to Hollywood for the slick special effects and the top actors, but the movie itself is a non-stop action coaster and the special effects really did turn out great. Add to this Smith's amiable comedy and Goldblum's straight role and I would just feel unpatriotic about putting this one in the Worst Movie Jail.
Yes, they sold out to Hollywood for the slick special effects and the top actors, but the movie itself is a non-stop action coaster and the special effects really did turn out great. Body: Battlefield Earth. If there is a worse movie, then I have not seen it. I don't even think this movie needs any explaination as to why it is the Worst Movie Ever, I think everyone pretty much knows why it is. Bad script, poor storyline, horrendous acting and the make-up is absolutely laughable. I could go on and on. This movie even made me dislike Travolta, who still has not redeemed himself in my eyes. Anyway, thought everyone would get a good laugh out of this one.
Body: Death to Smoochy is perhaps one of the most deranged films that I have ever seen. The entire movie feels like a cross between Barney's Greatest Hits and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. You can tell that the movie is supposed to be a dark comedy, but the jokes landed really flat with me. What was so surprising about this Lackluster is that it had a really amazing cast for the film. Edward Norton did a great job acting, but his character was so extremely bizarre from the get go it didn't work. Add to this the very drastically comedic styles between Robin Williams, Danny Devito & Jon Stewart and the end is result is pure caos. It felt like you had invited Bill Cosby and Chris Rock to go head to head on Last Comic Standing. In thinking on the premise of the film, I can't even imagine how this thing got greenlighted from the start.
Body: I just read a review where someone was recommending a movie and saying it wasn't good to recommend it as a "blind buy" but definitely good enough to recommend for a rental. This idea of a "blind buy". I know lots of people do that and maybe they just have money to burn, but I've never done that in my life and can't imagine I ever would. I don't have the biggest DVD collection anyways though. I don't even own most of my absolute favorite movies. I just assume if I ever want to watch them again I can just rent them again.Anyone out there care to discuss this phenomena of the "blind buy"?
Body: There are a lot of great directors out there, but Alfred Hitchcock has been named #1 in an online poll. Hitchcock beat out Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola and Stanley Kubrick to name a few. I'm not sure if I would have picked Hitchcock as the all time greatest, but I will say that I enjoyed his films. One of the things that he was very good at was taking a single murder and turning it into a very intense event. In today's movies, you need a high body count to creator that kind of tension, but Hitchcock could do it with just a single death and no special effects. I'm not sure what his trick was, but even today I still find his movies a bit creepy.http://www.bizofshowbiz.com/2007/09/alfred_hitchcock_named_greates.html
Body: So I was thinking this weekend about my favorite aspects of Spout and I think that I've isolated it to the social networking aspect of the site. I love the design, the movies and everything else, but it's really the people that keep me coming back and interacting with the site. In thinking of how one could take adavantage of the social aspect to the site I came up with two ideas.First, when it comes to the groups, I would try and highlight those a bit more. Right now, information on the groups is listed under the My People section, but I might encourage you to move that info straight onto the My Page section of the site. This way the groups are highlighted on the first page that someone sees after logging into Spout. I believe that the stronger you can connect an individual to a group that the more sticky the site will be for them and by giving it front page exposure, you can encourage participation. You could either just show the groups that people are already in, but I might try and highlight a group of the week or maybe all recent groups, etc. I'm not sure how you do the details really, but I do think that this is Spout's greatest strength and anyway that you can increase participation in the groups will be a real benefit to the community.Secondily, I was thinking about how one could use the information on Spout to network with other members and I think it might be cool if we had wikis that we could create for actors, directors, independent studios, etc. My idea would be to have Spout create the tools and then let the community populate the data. You could allow someone to create a page for an actress for example that lists their films, links to fan sites or photos, that automatically picks up any conversation threads where they are mentioned (or perhaps where the wiki is linked to), etc. The idea would be to allow independent filmakers/actors to showcase the work they've done by highlighting all of their accomplishments. Eventually, I could see you using this information to recruit actors for films or to help the consumer find other films that the indie's are working on. I'm not sure how much work this would be to create and in all honesty, I can't say that I'd personally use this feature a lot, but if after seeing a great film, I could find out more about some little know producer, I think that it could help to enhance the social networking aspect of the site. Right now you have a list of all movies that someone was involved in, but you can't search by actor or director and it doesn't show any of the conversations that people are having about them. By figuring out an automated way to connect information that Spout members write about an actor or director and then implementing that into their bio, I think that you could really create a powerful tool that could be used to help filmakers and viewers.
By figuring out an automated way to connect information that Spout members write about an actor or director and then implementing that into their bio, I think that you could really create a powerful tool that could be used to help filmakers and viewers. </spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>7/16/2006 11:30:26 AM</spout:postdate><spout:body>So I was thinking this weekend about my favorite aspects of Spout and I think that I've isolated it to the social networking aspect of the site. Body: I just saw Memento for the first time and was blown away with how good this film was. I loved the way that the film ignored traditional defenitions of time and reminded me of how Tarantino used a messed up time sequence to tell the story of Pulp Fiction. In watching the technique used again I couldn't help but wonder why more directors don't create non-linear films. It creates a new element of foreshadowing that is very interesting. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it.
Body: I've always been fascinated by Hitchcock because he had a way of making a single murder seem particularly grusome without needing to resort to in your face graphic violence. He always made just a single death seem so much more important then any of the killings in the slasher films.I think part of what made Hitchcock the master of suspense was what he didn't show not what he did show. The only scene that Tarantino ever filmed twice in Reservoir Dogs was the infamous ear scene. The first time that they filmed it they actually show the ear being cut off, but Tarantino went back later and had the camera pan off to the side so that viewers had to imagine the ear being cut off. This was a lot more disturbing and was what made the final cut.I wonder if Hitchcock was still alive today if his films would include the fancy special effects and digital manipulation that we see in so many of today's films or if his movies would be filmed more like live plays with limited effects.
Body: The difference between a great film and an ok film can sometimes come down to just one or two variables, but when it comes to terrible movies, it's usually only one or two variables that they get right. Since there are so many different ways that films can break down, I thought it would be fun to play a game of iSpy with the worst movies and try to find the repeat offenders. The rules are that you have to pick a movie that you really think is bad and you have to explain the connection between the two films. For example, if I nominated Blankman, you could pick Major Payne for having Damon Wayons in both films or someone could pick, Leonard Part 6 because both leading actors will end up regreting their roles in these particular superhero films. The more creative the connections, the more bonus points you get. If you feel like playing, feel free to jump in with a movie and your answer. For the first nominee, I'm going to pick Dude Where's My Car?
Body: I'm not sure how I ended up watching this one, but Evil Eyes was an absolute bomb. Spout doesn't have a lot of info on it, but it has Adam Baldwin and Matt Sheppard in it. The whole movie, I kept hoping it would get better, but the hour and a half ends up pretty flat. The story is about a writer who can will things into happening by writing about them. He is hired by a pretty creepy guy to recreate a slasher event from 35 years prior. I think that the movie could have been good with the right cast and special effects, but the acting was just plain terrible. I normally like to give the Baldwin brother's the benefit of a doubt, but this is one that I think you should skip. I vote guilty of having so much promise only to fall flat.
Body: I love playing games on Spout, so I wanted to use the Best Movie Quote group to create a guess that movie contest. I'll start by giving the first and if you get it right, then link to the actual movie page on Spout and then you get to pick the next mystery quote. If more then a few days goes by and no one can guess it, then give the answer and pick another mystery movie and we'll keep the game going. No using Google to cheat."See, now's the time of the meal when you start getting the McStomach ache. You start getting the McTummy. You get the McGurgles in there. You get the McBrick, then you get the McStomach ache. Right now I've got some McGas that's rockin"
Body: I have no idea how this film ended up on my Spout want to see list, but whoever recommended this to me better hope I don't figure out how I found out about this because Cat People has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The acting is terrible, the plot line ridiculous and the ending absolutely absurd. The movie is about a woman who meets her brother for the first time and finds out that she shares a disease that makes them turn into killer panthers everytime that they have sex with someone. After turning into a panther, the only way to get back to human is to murder someone. As if this is ridiculous enough, for some reason if they have sex with each other things are Ok. Now had the incest angle in this film been done in such a way to add something to the film, I could look the other way here, but this aspect of the plot line added nothing to the film and only made watching it all that much more unbearable. Add to this the hocus pocus of a voodoo woman who never quite defines what is going around and you've got a formula for an absolutely terrible move. After sitting through the entire film, the only thing I was left curious about was how this film ended up in my must see list to begin. If you haven't seen this film yet, take my advice and skip it, there are much better ways to spend an evening then to have to sit through this type of garbage. I vote guilty of being a worst move ever. five more votes and we'll look this cat in the worst movie ever cage and throw away the key.
Body: I saw Night of the Living Dead for the first time this weekend and the entire time I was watching it, I couldn't wait to add it to this film. If there ever was a film featuring female hysteria this is it. Facing an army of zombies, the female characters in this film become absolutely worthless in fighting them off. With way too many hysterical scenes and plenty of co-dependency to the male figures in the film, this movie is the perfect fit for this group.Don't get me wrong, it was a good film, but if I'm ever in a zombie fight, I expect my girlfriend to keep her wits about her enough to kick back when they start trying to lunch on her leg.
Body: In an earlier Battlefield Earth post, Gus had nominated Robocop 3 on charges of being a Hollywood Lackluster and I thought that I'd start a thread to initiate formal charges against the film. It's hard for me to look past the sequels. so I thought I'd nominate Robocop 1 & 2 as well and let the group determine if these are suspects or witnesses. Gus' argument for a guilty verdict on Robocop 3 - Just when you thought this franchise (if you can call it that) could'nt get any worse, Hollywood shows everyone just how big a turd they can really produce. There are no stars in this. Atleast Travolta, Barry Pepper and Forrest Whitaker were in Battlefield. Not that that helped any. Robocop 3 had a horrendous story, laughable dialogue, piss-poor special effects (nothing "special" about them, they sucked), the worst action scenes, and the acting didn't even measure up to what can be seen in any high school production. Nope,no redeeming factors at all. If you absolutely have to see Robocop, do yourself a favor and watch the original. Frankly, I agree with Gus when it comes to Robocop 3. The film was weak and was only put out to squeeze the last drops of cash out of the franchise. I vote guilty. When it comes to Robocop 2, I also vote guilty of being a Hollywood Lackluster. The plot was laughable, the acting was terrible and the environment of the film was a total joke. As far as Robocop 1 goes, I vote not guilty. That movie rocked. Maybe it was that it seemed so fresh at the time it came out, but the movie was a solid blockbuster in my book. Normally, if I like a film I tend to like the whole series, but when it comes to the Robocop family 2 of the brothers are bad in my book, but one turned out alright. Sometimes people just don't know when to quit.
Body: Common! Are you SERIOUS? I thought FATF was the worst movie of all time. Didn't see the second of the series. But a third? To be honest, if I was a film executive, I too would greenlight this piece of crap just to make some cash. But because I am not a film executive, this will be, on the record, the worst film ever! Oh yes, want to find something absolutely atrociously amusing? Watch the new Nicholas Cage trailer. I think its called Ghost Rider.
Body: I can't tell you how much I love Kevin in every film he's in practically. He makes the film crackle with electricity, even if it's mediocre, (like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which wasn't my favorite). My favorite Kevin Spacey performances are, hands down, his Oscar winning performances in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, two of my all-time favorite films. These characters are totally different. Verbal Kint, the (seemingly) meek idiot savant who's actually the most masterful manipulator the world has ever known. And Lester Burnham, the (seemingly) mediocre suburbanite hitting his midlife crisis with a vengeance. Anything he does immediately draws your eyes because he's so good, your disbelief is instantly suspended. He's a favoritest of mine too (see the Meryl Streep convo). Anyone else want to comment?
Body: I couldn't think of any movies with the 4th of July except for Oliver Stone's classic Born on the Fourth of July which isn't exactly about the 4th, but close enough. The movie itself is pretty gritty and was a little too much for my tastes, but it was well done by Stone who raises a good question of what patriotism really means. I figure that there ought to be better films that use the Fourth of July, but the only other option I can think of is My Girl and that's not exactly Pulp Fiction group material.
Body: Imagine if Ed Wood were still alive when Tim Burton filmed his biopic of the cult director. And imagine that Burton's film ignited Hollywood's interest in Eddie. Studios are willing to give Wood $100 million dollars for his next film. What kind of film would he make? Who do you think would like to work with him? Who would he like to work with? My two cents: Tim Burton would be interested in producing, but Wood may not be able to share the execution of his vision with anyone else. Johnny Depp, and maybe George Clooney would either like to act in the move, and failing that, be executive producers.
Body: I never thought that I'd ever be taking a David Lynch film to Worst Movie Ever court, but Lost Highway has to be one of the worst films I think I've ever seen. I've never seen a movie where there have been this many pauses before. Every scene was shot as if it was that pivotal moment in the film and instead of adding to the tension, it got old. The entire movie was like being in a bad dream. The characters seemed to change roles at will and I could never get a sense of where events were suppose to be occuring within the storyline. In the end there was no plot, no message and no entertainment. This one is definetely guilty of being a movie that you should not rent.
Body: About a month ago, Spout sent me a really cool care package filled up with all kinds of Spout swag. Over the last month, I've been trying to figure out what exactly to do with it because realistically there is only so much swag that I can really use. Well last night, I was wearing one of their extremely soft and comfortable T-shirts and it hit me that instead of trying to turn this swag into cold hard cash (swag is very hot in the silicon valley), I would instead use the swag as a way to say Thank You to all the Spout fans who have made hanging out on Spout so much fun. I've met a lot of cool people on Spout and have found some great movies and so as a way to reward those of you who are members of the site, I have decided that I will giveaway one piece of Spout swag to anyone who is interested in getting a Spout sticker, stationary, etc. from me. This offer doesn't include Spout employees because they can already get their hands on swag, but if you happen to be a member and would like to receive a piece of Spout history in the mail, then simply send me a Spout mail with the best name and address to send it to and I will be happy to help share this gift with the rest of the Spout community. While I intend to keep one of the t-shirts (sorry it's just too comfortable), I do have another shirt to giveaway, so if you are a small or medium, let me know and I'll put you into a drawing for the premium piece of swag. At the very minimum, anyone who responds will receive a letter and something extra. I have about a dozen pieces, so it will be first come first served, so if you want to participate, get your requests in early. For those of you more interested in getting digital swag, you should definetely check out some of the new tools that they've created for their recent upgrade. Best Regards, Davis
Body: Ok maybe Paul doesn't exactly have terrible tastes in movies, but I do think a major missing piece of Spout is automatic reccomendations. It could be that this starts with creating a one to five star ratings system and evolves from there, (or 1 -10 star) but people love to rate movies, and if you can tie that into my personal preferences, I think we'll end up with great movie picks. Don't get me wrong, we need individual recommendations. I did see Witness because it was in Paul's favorites queue, but come on Parenthood??? Definetely not for me, I'm totally freaked out by that kind of commitment. After all I was the one that created the hide-from-girlfriend tag. I've played around with a lot of different movie recommendation services and Spout by far creates the best user experience, but it does lack those Netflix suggestions that give the user an incentive to rate or tag films. It's not that there won't be people who rate and tag anyway, but by creating a payoff, I think that we'd see more user participation, even if that participation creates a more passive benefit for the rest of the group. This latest rant has been brought on by checking out a new recomendation engine (http://movielens.umn.edu/main) which while accurate in their recomendations sucks the big one compared to Spout. While I understand that Spout is about discovering movies and not just finding a quick fix, until Paul can come up with something better then Dances With Wolves as a favorite, I'm going to continue to rant about reccomendations everytime I've had too much wine.*Bulletin points not added for emphasis as much as I love playing around with those slick spout tools in the editing section of these posts.
Body: Now truth be told, I fell asleep during this movie about 75% of the way into, but what I saw was enough to convince me that this was a terrible sequel. Godzilla had the big budget, the marketing hype, the special effects, but terrible acting and none of the wow factor that the earlier films had. It would be easy to convict this one on being a Hollywood Lackluster, but the original was so good that I'm voting guilty of being a bad sequel.
Body: Since everyone's taste can be quite a bit different, I thought that I would introduce a way that we can vote on whether or not a film is really all that bad. In order to nominate something for the Worst Movie Court, you must make a post of that film and then argue why you think the film should be found not guilty of being bad. WME members can then vote guilty or not guilty if you have seen the film. The first one to get five guilties or non-guilties will determine whether it goes to Worst Movie jail or Not Guilty of Being Worst Movie. All films added to the Worst Movie Ever group are open for nomination with the exception of films that members have added to the actual worst movie ever list. Since you only get one vote for that list, all votes there are final. Since we've already had our first two controversies, I figured we could start off our opening court with those films. The two cases up for review are Munich and Waterworld. Now I haven't seen Munich, so I'll have to abstain from voting, but if you've seen it, then lets hear why it needs to be in the group or out of the group, as far as Waterworld goes, I have seen it and here is why it's still guilty in my book. The acting in the film lacked real emotion. The apocolyptic vision was so over the top that I had trouble buying into the fantasy of a Water World the entire time. Add to this the childish antics of Kevin Costner's so called enemies and there was no suspension of reality regardless of how much money they spent. Because of how bad it was and the amount of money spent, I vote Waterworld guilty of being a Hollywood Lackluster.
