Body: There are certain films which are aching for a Criterion release. My suggestions are Night and Dawn of the Dead (the original Romero versions of course). Also I think there should be at least one Errol Morris film in the collection. Also the Bicycle thief should be in there, even though they included Umberto D. As for films that don't deserve to be in the collection: the Rock, Armageddon, RoboCop, and Fat Girl. Anything Michael Bay deserves to be burned.
Body: I am a bargain hunter in general, but I love to dig for things. I have made it pretty much a standard that I don't pay full price for Criterions even though I love them. I have a hard time paying $40 for a movie. Here are a few that I have found for really really low prices.Seven Samurai - $7 (Blockbuster used area)Carnival of Soulds - $5 (Second hand store)Band of Outsiders - $6 (Bizarre junk shop in Niles Michigan)Shock Corridor - $8 (Going out of business clearance at Hollywood Video) Robocop - $25 (ebay, usually sells for $80ish... its out of print) I will add more if I have any new super on the cheap aquisitions.
Body: I was having a conversation with my wife about Four Eyed Monsters a couple days ago and I think the reason we fell in love with the movie, the podcast, the mythos of it all is that we actually had a similar experience. We were young, in love, and everything felt done and played out. We wanted to forge "our own reality" and started writing notes to each other, drawing cartoons, sharing our experience non-verbally. I think that part of this can come with immaturity, always wanting to do things counter to social norms. But it also is something that was definitely made more powerful because of our intense connection to each other. Communicating creatively made our relationship grow even faster. Hey, look at us now, almost 10 years later... married, house, 2 cats, and working at the same place. I was wondering if other Spouters had a similar experience or could share their own experience with strong relationships and bonding moments. Thanks, V
To be honest, if I was a film executive, I too would greenlight this piece of crap just to make some cash. But because I am not a film executive, this will be, on the record, the worst film ever! Oh yes, want to find something absolutely atrociously amusing? Watch the new Nicholas Cage trailer. I think its called Ghost Rider.
Body: Obviously, the reason that the X-Men movies are listed several times over in this group is the fantasy of gaining a superpower. The movies explore the downsides rather thoroughly: the prejudice and outsider feelings one might have to find they are different. Let's ignore the serious side for a moment, because part of the appeal, of course, is "wouldn't that be cool if...?" So, which X-Men character would you be? I always liked Storm, of course, even though Halle Berry makes me cringe (anyone else think she's overrated in general?). I think I would most like to be Jean Grey though without the harsh Phoenix side. I would NOT want to be Rogue. What a completely useless power that completely separates her from not only humans but also other mutants. Her power sucks. Which one would you like to be?
Body: I have noticed this movie bubbling up to the top of the recently viewed flicks list several times in the last few days. Then I remembered that I had actually seen it quite a while ago. It was when I lived on the southwest end of Michigan and only received Chicago TV signals (there are no Michigan channels down there). Late one Saturday night I was channel flippin' and on Channel 26 "The U" there was a Chicago variant of Svenghouli announcing that his terrifying pick of the week was Slugs. What followed was a hillariously bad horror movie that could easily take the honors for worst flick ever. It was these late night Svenghouli flicks that actually helped build my interest in shit cinema. Now I love watching bad movies. Anyone else have any similar stories?
Post Date: 6/18/2006 1:05:39 AM
Body: I saw Cars tonight, a week late, but whatever. First, I should mention that I'm a Pixar geek. I love each and every Pixar movie. I love all of the little gimmicks and things that are trademarks to the franchise: the shorts that come before each movie, the logo, the voice talents, the imaginary worlds, the state of the art CGI animation, and the credit gags. Still, I was less excited for Cars than, say, Finding Nemo or The Incredibles just because it was a movie all about, well, cars. I'm not a car fan, in general. Cars are necessary to drive, but I was leery of watching a movie about cars with personalities. I imagined a wide variety of puns were in my future and wasn't sure this film was going to live up to its predecessors. I'm an avid reader of movie reviews. I like to get a wide spectrum of opinions from different types of viewers before I make a decision about seeing movies, except movies I really want to see. I read the review from the New York Times for Cars, which basically called this an emotionless dud. Have I mentioned that the Times reviewers are pretentious and snobby? Rarely do I agree with them, but yet masochistically, I always have to read the review to see if it will pass their muster. This is one of those times I starkly disagree with the Times. Like every other Pixar movie, Cars was heartwarming and funny. Also, like every other Pixar movie, it was a surprisingly complex and textured little film that carried several themes and subtexts, which little kids will lose after distraction by the schticky characters, but which adults will find charming and important. Yes, so, cars are the main characters and live in a world of gassy puns. This movie, though, provided cheeky satire about NASCAR and car racing (and car racing fans); social commentary about American society's obsession with cars; tongue-in-cheek observations about relationships between the sexes (there is a funny take on the "men can't ask for directions" phenomenon); and a message about the consequences/byproducts of progress and about not losing sight of our local and national/historical treasures. It didn't make me laugh as much as Finding Nemo and is a bit formulaic, since the main character, race car Lightning McQueen, has to come to some self-realizations in the end like Woody/Buzz, Flik, Sully, Marlin, or Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible, but an emotionless dud it was not. I loved the film, and I think it's another triumph for Pixar. Plus, the short that regularly accompanies the feature films was hysterical as always, and the credit gags were laugh-out-loud funny! I highly recommend this movie. Anyone else want to comment?
Body: I'm not sure if I'd actually buy this, but maybe. Its only 6 minutes long, and I don't really know what I'd do with it...I guess I'd play it a few times for different people hoping it would make them buy Michigan asparagus, then I'd pass it on to someone else who cared.Asparagus!
