Group Description: This group is all about making lists of five films each. The films in each list share a common element (lead actor, director, etc...).
Spout Group:Beyond Barney - Kid-friendly films that won't make you ill

<img align='left' src='http://www.spout.com/Avatars/Groups/37.jpg?TimeStamp='6/27/2007 11:04:34 AM'' hspace='10' style='height:80px;' />
Group Name: Beyond Barney - Kid-friendly films that won't make you ill
Group Description: I know that in recent years, family-focused (particularly animated) features have become huge successes for studios, parents, and kids alike. I don't mean to buck the system, but I fear my children being unduly influenced by Disney or Pixar or whomever. The genius of these films in part is their dual plot lines, reaching out to both parents and kids. But the wink-wink nudge-nudge aspect of the parent-directed jokes make me weary, and long for film that help me more directly connect with my child. Laugh at the same joke. It started with comparing Toccata for Toy Trains to Barney, where I asked myself why couldn't films worthy of my kids' attention also appeal to me on the same level? So these aren't the only criteria for listing films here - it's more of a popular brainstorm about such things. But it's what made me start this group. Feel free to join, and don't see this as an academic course but do take it seriously. If you add films to one of the lists, please try to give a brief description for the rest of us. Thanks!
Group Description: Both unexpectedly funny and heartbreaking, 51 Birch Street is the first-person account of Doug Block’s unpredictable journey through a whirlwind of dramatic life-changing events: the death of his mother, the uncovering of decades of family secrets, and the ensuing reconciliation with his father. What begins as his own intimate, autobiographical story, soon evolves into a broader meditation on the universal themes of love, marriage, fidelity and the mystery of family.
Body: UPDATE: Because of a change in availability, Susan & Arin will be taking questions through July and August 2008 This discussion is open to whomever would like to ask Arin and Susan questions about Four Eyed Monsters (if you want to catch up, buy the DVD from Borders Books or watch the video podcasts). Arin and Susan have total discretion over which questions they choose to answer, and will be checking into this discussion frequently thru June and July. By way of a brief introduction (Arin & Susan feel free to make any corrections), Arin Crumley and Susan Buice made the movie Four Eyed Monsters--an autobiographical story about how they fell in love, unlocked each other's creativity and began, well, making Four Eyed Monsters--in 2004. It premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in 2005 and, although loved by festival audiences, it failed to get traditional distribution. In November 2005, they launched a video podcast on iTunes the same day the video iPod launched (brilliant). Episodes 1-8 are about the tumultuous making the movie and were Internet sensations. Along the way Arin, Susan and an army of supporters (special nod to Brian Chirls) pioneered self-distribution and marketing with grassroots screenings of the movie, selling DVDs and being the first feature film to debut on YouTube (self-indulgent nod to your sponsor, Spout), among a slew of other efforts. Episodes 9-13 of the Four Eyed Monsters video podcast premiered in May 2008. They are a jarringly intimate conclusion to Arin and Susan's relationship and Four Eyed Monsters, a title that no longer represents a movie but--for lack of a better term--an experience. One that, for many, represents a major landmark in the potential of filmmaking in the Digital Age. I'll get things kicked off here with some questions that have been on my mind:1) This may be impossible, but could you try to describe what your lives might look like had you premiered your movie in 2005, sold it for $100,000 to a distributor, and gone back to NY with a fat check. I guess I'm looking for what would be better and what would be worse?2) Susan, in episode 12 you described you and Arin as "the unit," which I think meant your solidarity in making Four Eyed Monsters happen. But on a personal level you wanted to be out of your commitment to Arin. In trying to gain control over your own identity, you say the only thing you had control over was sex. Stripping, seeing other men, possibly even withholding sex from Arin--were your only ways to escape the unit. Why is that?3) Arin, the movie involves a lot of re-creations of real events, but at some point you started whipping out a camera to film actual conversations. When did you decide to do that? And, with the recent episodes, what was it like using "really" real footage--particularly of Susan telling you she's lost feelings for you and wants to be with other men--versus footage based on something real?4) Now that the end is on the horizon for Four Eyed Monsters, will you two still be partners in your next project? Or--to use a music industry term--are we going to see "solo albums" coming out?
Why is that?3) Arin, the movie involves a lot of re-creations of real events, but at some point you started whipping out a camera to film actual conversations. When did you decide to do that? And, with the recent episodes, what was it like using "really" real footage--particularly of Susan telling you she's lost feelings for you and wants to be with other men--versus footage based on something real?4) Now that the end is on the horizon for Four Eyed Monsters, will you two still be partners in your next project? Or--to use a music industry term--are we going to see "solo albums" coming out?</spout:body>

Body: Spout frequently receives DVD screeners for upcoming or newly released movies. We send those screeners to members who display particular insight and thoughtfulness in their writing. These are our Spout Mavens and this group is where they review and discuss the movies we send them.Want to be a Spout Maven? Here is what you have to do...Request membership to this group. We will review what you have written here at spout.com and make a decision. (We're pretty nice, if you don't make the cut the first time, we'll make suggestions on what to improve upon so you can try again.) We are looking for prolific movie watchers writing quality reviews and discussion posts within Spout. You need to have content in your Spout Profile including at least 5 editorial quality reviews already posted to your Spout Filmblog. Also, you need to reside either in the US or Canada since we can only ship to the Region 1 code (US and Canada). If you are accepted, we will periodically send you DVDs to screen. You are expected to write a review of the movie in your Spout Filmblog within one month of receiving the screener. The reviews should adhere to basic movie review guidelines (600-1000 words in length, cite actor and director names, be grammatically correct) and have movie titles linked to the corresponding movie page at spout.com. The DVDs are yours to keep as our thanks for making quality contributions to Spout. Please, give joining a shot and spend some time perusing our discussions. Thanks,Paul
Body: If you've paid any attention to the Vampire Cage Match this week at spout.com/vampires, you've noticed Twilight's Robert Pattinson is mopping the floor with every vampire he faces. I could understand his victory over Tom Cruise (Interview With a Vampire), but now that he's crushed Gary Oldman, I think there's something very rotten in Transylvania... The Vampire Cage Match is about finding the ultimate badass vampire, not the Vampire Most Likely to Get Laid This Week! What do you guys think? Can Kate Beckinsale pull through? Or have the baddest vampires already been eliminated? Vote: Pattinson vs. Beckinsale Discuss: WTF?
I want to know they are there for me and I will be there for them. While you sit and think, watch Gabriel Over the White House from this week's podcast. Body: Hola group, On SpoutBlog, you may have seen Chris Campbell's weekly lists. I thought it would be fun if the Top 5 group got to weigh in what we're thinking about from week to week. I'll give you the topics, you weigh in with your movies, and when Chris' posts go up (between Tuesday and Friday) we'll let you know here in the group so you can check them out. Here are the lists we're working on this week (10/13/08) for SpoutBlog: Top Political Passion Projects -- For good and for ill, celebrities can get too big for their britches and make very politically-motivated movies. Top Musicians Who Made Movies -- We're not talking actors-turned-musicians, like Bruce Willis or Crispin Glover...maybe that should be its own list. We're thinking more along the lines of Madonna's latest foray as director. Top Virgins Who Lost it On a Road Trip -- We got to thinking about how many road trips involve someone losing their virginity. Why is it easier to get laid on the road? I'd look forward to reading what you think. -Paul
Body: In less than 200 words, share your most scarring movie memory in this thread. We'll pick the most traumatic experience, announce the winner on Filmspotting and send them some Spout swag. I'll be the first divulge dark secrets with my most scarring memory... Even more than watching Luke’s hand get axed by Darth Vader, was E.T. I was six years old watching what I felt was the greatest movie ever conceived, when E.T. gets sick, he goes missing and Elliot’s older brother goes to find him. Find him he does, unconscious laying next to a drainage ditch in the LA suburbs, all pink and fleshy looking like a skinned cow carcass sculpted to look like an alien. I burst into tears and climbed in my mom’s lap. I wanted to go home. Even the messianic resurrection and E.T.’s pick up by the homeboys on the mother ship didn’t undo the damage.I was literally a full grown adult living on my own before I finally stopped getting butterflies in my stomach each time the lights went down in a movie theater. If I could hang words on that instinctive feeling, they would be, “What the f@#k am I about to get myself into? Another E.T.?”
Body: m_rturnage sent me this wonderfully obvious indie film idea after our barrage of made up film pitches in FilmCouch #65 - Indiewood Mashup. (Sorry, turnage I took so long to find it.) Greasy Cheese On a lonely back road... in the middle of flat Middle America... is Greasy Cheese. Greasy Cheese is an old all-nite roadside diner, its only employees are the slightly anti-Semitic, yet lovable,owner/fry cook and the sassy, wisdom-dispensing transsexual waitress. Rick and Carol are a young couple on the run, with only their beat up old car and a trunk full of stolen money to keep them company. Their car breaks down less than a mile from Greasy Cheese and barely limps into the parking lot before giving up the ghost. It will be a day before the tow truck can get to them, leaving the young couple stranded for 24 hours at the diner. Enter Sheriff McBiff, the corrupt cop that really stole the money and who Rick and Carol double-crossed. McBiff is hot on the couple's trail, and stop at nothing to get his money back, even if that means performing a one-man siege armed of an all-night diner. During the course of a 24-hour period, a fry cook will learn the error of his ways, a corrupt sheriff's mysterious past will come back to haunt him, and a young couple on the rocks will find new love. At turns suspenseful, hilarious, and heartwarming, Greasy Cheese is the full meal deal.
Body: This week, we're recasting The Princess Bride (1987). It's a classic that would be a travesty for some money hungry Hollywood exec to try and remake, which is exactly why we're imagining a remake. I hope a new cast comes out of this that makes me salivate for a remake, but I predict this will be an exercise in imagining how bad a remake of this movie could screw up.This is a FIlmspotting contest and a winner will be announced on the Filmspotting podcast April 18, 2008. Extra credit goes to anyone who casts Samuel L. Jackson and rewrites a classic Princess Bride quote just for him. Cary Elwes ... WestleyRobin Wright Penn ... Body: Looking at all of the Butterknife episodes, I think they have a way of being so loosely put together they almost taunt you to look for something deeper. The Smelly Elly episode seems like Ronnie hunting down a goofy guy on a smoke break then, randomly, ending the series with he and Mary looking toward the future: A baby. But there's another part of me that doesn't want it to be random. My mind starts to wonder if Ronnie as a detective is just a more interesting way of looking at a generation raised on movies, graduating college and entering dead-end jobs. If the decision to have a baby is the anti-climactic reality of becoming an adult and realizing the most exciting parts of your life may not happen in your career (or may happen in spite of your career). Is Butterknife all about a generation that grew up on TV reaching adulthood and realizing TV was lying? I don't know. Joe Swanberg's not one to hint at it one way or the other--and I've even personally asked him. But I like to think it's not random. It's a fun way to pass an afternoon, at least.
Body: How many times I have thought of a film and remembered only bits and pieces and if you know anything about the unreliability of Memory http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2005-03/du-ems030805.php ; http://www.amazon.com/Eyewitness-Testimony-new-preface-author/dp/0674287770/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-8380071-7184419?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173130812&sr=1-1 then you are well aware, wait!!! your memory is probably swell! then you know that it is my memory that is questionableIn a recent discussion with xxchunkyxx718 about a missing film, here are a couple of synopses begging for a title... ( here is hoping that 'Wisdom of the Crowds' is just that)1. the movie is domestic, i'm gearing towards it being in the drama section or some sort of drama/family. It was made before 1995 I know that much and as far as my memory goes, the movie is about a girl and an older man who is sort of like an outcast in their town or villiage, this girl goes to this man and tries to get him to give her music lessons or singing lessons but he's very unfriendly and I think says no, but i remember bits and pieces of the movie like she always carried I think whats called a book satchel or a belt looking thing that carries her books and i remember her giving it to him either as a thank you or a gift trying to get him to give her the music lessons. The last parts of it that i remember is him giving her the music lessons and the towns people find out about it and raid this mans house and burn it, i remember the towns people throwing all of his things like his music notes and small furniture off of his balcony and this was all during where the girl was singing in some concert and the people destroying the pianist's house was kind of faded in the background of the girls concert. The only other thing i remember is when the girl was in the man's house a woman was talking to her and the girl i think asked some questions about the man and the woman said to her "just remember that curiosity killed the cat". ...2....I am trying to find a film that I saw one night on cable 5 or 6 years ago, I think it was set in Florida or something. A young girl was chained in some cage/box and went through a hurrican and fortunately ( I think at least ) the 'care giver' ( god what a description ) was killed in the storm and the young girl was found...after that I have no idea what happened...I think I fell asleep. but I would love to find it.please feel free to join in with any films you would love to locate...
Body: A call with Michel Gondry clears up our misconceptions of Be Kind Rewind--a movie I think is deceptively amazing but Kevin's on the fence about--and both of us decide he's a fascinating director. This Sunday, Diablo Cody will be crowned greatest screenwriter of 2008 at the Academy Awards (I predict) for Juno and I also predict it will crush her (and I'm not just saying that because I'm bitter there's only a minute worth of interview to play here). Body: An unforeseen hangover from the Sundance Film Festival, like the freezing and thawing of the earth, slowly drags up thoughts and pondering on the state of movies in America. The conclusion looks much like the political landscape: Two parties, sharply divided, moving further apart. Talking to Baghead director, Jay Duplass, and Zeroville author, Steve Erickson. FilmCouch 55UPDATE: A correction: On the podcast, Paul says that ZEROVILLE was written by Steven Erickson, film critic for the LA Times. It was actually written by Steve Erickson, who is the film critic for LOS ANGELES Magazine.
Body: It didn't make it in to FilmCouch #48, but I think Kevin and I came to some sort of resolution over the disgreement with No Country for Old Men. Many people think this movie is among the best work the Coens have ever done. Nobody disputes that it is one of the more finely crafted movies in theaters this year or that it's compelling to watch. It was asserted that the signature "quirky" aesthetic of the brothers gets in the way of a movie that otherwise may have lived up to Peter Travers of Rolling Stone's praise that it's a "masterpiece." The conclusion Kevin and I landed on is that the Coens made a movie of archetypes (Javier Bardem is more Evil than a person, Tommy Lee Jones more a generation than a sheriff), yet those characters are as idiosynchratic as the ones in Raising Arizona. So, there is a conflict that--I think--diminishes the movie as I feel I'm supposed to laugh like with Raising Arizona, but also treat these characters with the gravity that an archetype brings. I think the Coens experimented with mixing quirky and archetype together, and the experiment didn't pay off this time.
The conclusion Kevin and I landed on is that the Coens made a movie of archetypes (Javier Bardem is more Evil than a person, Tommy Lee Jones more a generation than a sheriff), yet those characters are as idiosynchratic as the ones in Raising Arizona. </spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>12/7/2007 10:45:01 AM</spout:postdate><spout:body>It didn't make it in to FilmCouch #48, but I think Kevin and I came to some sort of resolution over the disgreement with No Country for Old Men. Many people think this movie is among the best work the Coens have ever done. Body: The return of Billy the Kid and Jennifer Venditti. The story of a first time filmmaker that began with an interview at SXSW in March concludes in a conversation with Jennifer this week. Spoiler: It's a happy ending. Revisiting No Country for Old Men. Karina's beef with the Coen Brothers caused a stir among listeners, and we pick up the debate again. It only gets more heated. FilmCouch #48
Body: Fame. Money. Success. These are the accolades reserved for only the Hollywood elite, the great artists of the silver screen. Or not. Some adored filmmakers leave us scratching our heads. Paul and Kevin look at Ridley Scott's latest, American Gangster, in light of his yet-again re-released classic Blade Runner. Does he belong in the pantheon of great gangster-epic directors or is he just an imitator? Karina questions whether the Coen brothers are anything more than competent genre directors. Body: In this episode, Kevin and I invited listeners to share any experiences they considered to be spiritual while watching a movie. So, please feel free to share. I'll start by sharing a bit more detail around my experience with Children of Men. In the scene mentioned during the podcast where the warring soldiers stop firing on eachother when they hear the baby crying, I felt I had the most palpable experience of what Joseph Campbell called the "unknowable." It was a visceral moment of respect for life and the "force" behind it. The intangible idea that we're connected, that in saving another's life, I'm saving my own became real for me in that scene. Those are the best words I have. As usual, the "spiritual" stumps intellectual explanation, but I encourage you guys to give it a shot and share your experience here. -p
Once a Hollywood boy-wonder, in recent years he has deconstructed his all-american persona. Body: Appropriation: Originality is overrated. Filmmakers taking footage from another film and adapting it into a new movie--Orson Welles (F for Fake), Werner Herzog (The Wild Blue Yonder) and Roger Corman (Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women)--are they inspired or just desperate? In the spirit of appropriation, email a sentence into filmcouch@spout.com. Kevin and Paul will incorporate it ever so naturally into next week's show. The first person to identify the appropriated sentence wins a Spout track jacket from American Apparel (valued at $50). Download FilmCouch #21 or subscribe in the iTunes store (search for "filmcouch" or click here to launch iTunes) and a new free episode will download every Friday.
