Group Description: I know that in recent years, family-focused (particularly animated) features have become huge successes for studios, parents, and kids alike. I don't mean to buck the system, but I fear my children being unduly influenced by Disney or Pixar or whomever. The genius of these films in part is their dual plot lines, reaching out to both parents and kids. But the wink-wink nudge-nudge aspect of the parent-directed jokes make me weary, and long for film that help me more directly connect with my child. Laugh at the same joke. It started with comparing Toccata for Toy Trains to Barney, where I asked myself why couldn't films worthy of my kids' attention also appeal to me on the same level? So these aren't the only criteria for listing films here - it's more of a popular brainstorm about such things. But it's what made me start this group. Feel free to join, and don't see this as an academic course but do take it seriously. If you add films to one of the lists, please try to give a brief description for the rest of us. Thanks!

We all know how most big budget films rely on formulaic storylines and "Hollywood" endings. But even among good films, a promising start looses its value when the film goes nowhere. Too often, they go on too long, meander aimlessly, or just seem unresolved. I don't mean wrapped in a nice little bow, with no questions remaining. I mean where the last five mintues are as compelling as the first – hopefully even more. Having a great ending is a required ingredient for a great film.

Body: When I was 7, the first Star Wars (okay, now known as Episode IV) was released in theaters. It was a watershed moment for me as for many others. I owned the soundtrack album on vinyl, the figurines, a viewmaster with short segments to watch over and over. I saved my allowance for several weeks to afford the $14 X-Wing toy spaceship. Call me a geek or a cliché, but it left an indelible mark on my psyche relating to good and evil, technology, and optimism. Star Wars become the first movie that I watched several times - I think I saw it five or six more times in the theater. This was quite a feat for a 7-year old in the days before cable as we know it, VCRs, DVDs, and DVRs. Now that we have all this stuff, and that the following two movies - The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) and Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) - as well as the second wave - Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III - have all come out, I can now watch each of them to my heart's content. Okay, I'm not 7 anymore, and these films certainly don't have the pull they once had. Still, I was as excited as many others to see all these films made. Ewoks aside, I enjoyed all these movies and find myself watching them, or parts of them as it happens, on cable when they're on. I'm even starting to enjoy the second wave a bit more than I did after a first look.This experience however simply reaffirms my feelings about the original Star Wars. It's the best of the series, the one that started so much madness and delight. It still takes me back to an age when I wanted and needed heros, to the 70s when the heros weren't so clean cut, and the special effects weren't so perfect. When outer space, only rarely depicted in this way previously, was magical and fresh. I've found that it's a movie that to this day, I can watch again and again with great pleasure and nostalgia.

Now that we have all this stuff, and that the following two movies - The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) and Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) - as well as the second wave - Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III - have all come out, I can now watch each of them to my heart's content. Okay, I'm not 7 anymore, and these films certainly don't have the pull they once had. Still, I was as excited as many others to see all these films made. Ewoks aside, I enjoyed all these movies and find myself watching them, or parts of them as it happens, on cable when they're on. I'm even starting to enjoy the second wave a bit more than I did after a first look.This experience however simply reaffirms my feelings about the original Star Wars. It's the best of the series, the one that started so much madness and delight. It still takes me back to an age when I wanted and needed heros, to the 70s when the heros weren't so clean cut, and the special effects weren't so perfect. When outer space, only rarely depicted in this way previously, was magical and fresh. It was a watershed moment for me as for many others. I owned the soundtrack album on vinyl, the figurines, a viewmaster with short segments to watch over and over. I saved my allowance for several weeks to afford the $14 X-Wing toy spaceship. Call me a geek or a cliché, but it left an indelible mark on my psyche relating to good and evil, technology, and optimism. Star Wars become the first movie that I watched several times - I think I saw it five or six more times in the theater. This was quite a feat for a 7-year old in the days before cable as we know it, VCRs, DVDs, and DVRs. I like animation and grew up with Disney and Bugs Bunny and the like, but for some reason I feel better about my son watching March of the Penguins or Bears than Finding Nemo. Maybe it's that I want them grounded in reality, to love and see magic in the world around them (in addition to video games). Or something. Thoughts? Should I just stick with Nemo (which is easier) and take them camping?

Curious what others think about the problems of exposing young kids to sex and violence, how the two differ, and at what age. My personal bias is that I'd much prefer them to see sex than anything violent on the screen (okay, my daughter is only 6 months). But really, I'm far more concerned by my children seeing the average killing on prime time than Janet Jackson's chest. That's just physiology for pete's sake! What do you think?

Also because I had started a few personal lists which seemed to apply, and I wondered how other people felt about watching films again.It's interesting how your experience with a film can change over time. I'm quite certain that the evolution of Cable TV, HBO, VHS, DVD, etc., has changed our perception of film. Tom Cruise annoys me as much as he does everyone else, but my wife and I will put up with that grin to catch the choice Jack Nicholson bits in A Few Good Men as it endlessly loops on TBS or wherever.Some films tend to get better upon repeat viewing, others get worse. Perhaps it's a function of my mood, timing, my own maturity, or who I'm with. Or maybe it's an aspect of the film itself. I'm not sure how many times I've seen Caddyshack, but can it be refuted that it gets better every time?
