Spout Group:Beyond Barney - Kid-friendly films that won't make you ill

Group Name: Beyond Barney - Kid-friendly films that won't make you ill
Group Description: I know that in recent years, family-focused (particularly animated) features have become huge successes for studios, parents, and kids alike. I don't mean to buck the system, but I fear my children being unduly influenced by Disney or Pixar or whomever. The genius of these films in part is their dual plot lines, reaching out to both parents and kids. But the wink-wink nudge-nudge aspect of the parent-directed jokes make me weary, and long for film that help me more directly connect with my child. Laugh at the same joke. It started with comparing Toccata for Toy Trains to Barney, where I asked myself why couldn't films worthy of my kids' attention also appeal to me on the same level? So these aren't the only criteria for listing films here - it's more of a popular brainstorm about such things. But it's what made me start this group. Feel free to join, and don't see this as an academic course but do take it seriously. If you add films to one of the lists, please try to give a brief description for the rest of us. Thanks!
Body: Logan's Run i watched Ewan McGregor in "The Island" a few days ago and I kept having thoughts of how it was basically a remake of Logan's Run. so I had to break out the classics. I forgot how much i really enjoyed this movie. Peter York was a perfect fit for the role. The special effects were pretty low-budget; everytime they would shoot at the runner it always made a spark at their feet. i guess in the future nobody is taught how to aim. it reminded me of the old bugs bunny cartoons where yosemite would shoot at the feet and yell "dance ya varmint". Aside from that, I loved the theme of the movie.who can forget the creepy "renewal ceremony" masks?
Body: o.k. here is where i justify the suckiness of the sequels. flashback to matrix 1. Neo has obtained a godlike status at the end of the film. he is able to shake up and manipulate the matrix like a friggin 'etch a sketch.'nothing can stop neo. not even himself. fast forward to the sequels.neo is back to sissy mode. what gives? did he bump his head and forget how to toss around the matrix?and the messianic ending of the third movie was enough to make me barf. i was screaming at the screen "please god, let a robot kill this poor bastard and end my misery!" o.k. maybe not screaming. but severely disappointed. the only redeeming value was the kick-ass mech battle. that was it. the sappy ass love scenes were inappropriate to the entire series but yet, there they were, the cliche' "keanu loves you baby but he's such a tortured soul." And if i have to watch yet another Keanu movie where he spends a majority of his screen time walking around with this "help me mister i've lost my mom" look, I swear to almighty God, I will rip my toenails off with a rusty fishing knife. Because that would undoubtedly garner more pleasure than yet another Matrix sequel.they suck. get over it.
Body: It took me a few days, but I finally saw Superman Returns. I'll reiterate that I was really scared because I love the first Superman with Christopher Reeve and to a slightly lesser extent Superman II (but not III and IV, they were lame). I thought it was-risky-to remake Superman again not too long after Mr. Reeve passed, and, really, I feel like no one else can play Superman as well. Dean Cain sure couldn't do it. And Tom Welling is good, but he's playing teen Superman, so it's not really comparing apples to apples. First off, Brandon Routh allayed all of my fears. He was EXCELLENT. He played Superman with much deference and similarity to Christopher Reeve while still making the character his own. Plus, he's got piercing blue eyes, which is very important. So, that fear was quelled. And Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor? Shut up! He was outstanding. Then again, he almost always is. He was a bit more subtle than Gene Hackman, but I thought he did a fine job. Maniacal, sure. Insane evil genius, sure. But...more subtle. Not subtle outright...just more subtle than Gene Hackman. The weakest character portrayal was Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't good either. It could have been the way the character was written, but she just didn't have that spark that Lois Lane needs. She was spunky but kind of flat, I felt. Lovesick to be sure, but, well... The thing I most want to talk about is the biggest spoiler to the whole movie. There is a major plot point to this movie that is both heartwarming but also creates several flaws for me. I mean, in total, the movie was good. Bryan Singer made the film something of an homage to Superman I, using the Marlon Brando sequences (some from the Director's Cut of the first) and lifting lines for the characters to repeat ("I hope this doesn't put you off of flying...it's still, statistically speaking, the safest way to travel"). He even had the scorer use John Williams' core themes, including the entire opening sequence and the same graphics for the credits. It was also an homage to the character as a character, and as a man. There were lots of slomo shots of Superman in flight, saving people, in flight in space, stopping bullets, in flight. His cape billowed in the wind, while his trademark curl stayed perfectly in place. Still a marvel. Oh, and he took Lois on another ride. The basic plot was new and different...which I won't spoil. The biggest thing in the plot, though, blew open a ton of holes and questions. It made me feel like there should've been a movie before this movie, to explain more why Superman left and what happened just prior to him leaving...anyone know what I'm talking about? My biggest issue: this plot thing happened, but Lois still doesn't know that Clark is Superman? Wha???? Still, I think the movie will be mine someday. And I'm sure they've left sequel possibilities wide open. Anyone else seen it who wants to comment?
Body: You will only be able to answer this question if you've read the book. It's the ending and the path to the ending that Robert Langdon takes that could possibly qualify it as fantasy. It's one of the movies I'm most looking forward to seeing this year, but I didn't know if I could call it strict fantasy since it's actually based on very realistic paintings and artwork that actually exist. The effect of that journey, however, is something quite interesting. Anyone read it who wants to comment?
Anyone read it who wants to comment?</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>3/8/2006 11:12:01 PM</spout:postdate><spout:body>You will only be able to answer this question if you've read the book. It's the ending and the path to the ending that Robert Langdon takes that could possibly qualify it as fantasy. Body: i've noticed that alot of fantasy movies (and some sci-fi) are basically stolen replicas of older films. for instance: sharkboy and lava girl was a rip off of Neverending story. more recently: mirrormask was just another Labyrinth. any others?
Body: You will notice that much of the general fantasy list could easily be relegated to some science fiction category (of which I know at least one) here at Spout. My thought - isn't science fiction really fantasy? Or a subset thereof. Fantasy is defined at www.dictionary.com this way: The creative imagination; unrestrained fancy. See Synonyms at imagination. Something, such as an invention, that is a creation of the fancy. A capricious or fantastic idea; a conceit. Fiction characterized by highly fanciful or supernatural elements. An example of such fiction. An imagined event or sequence of mental images, such as a daydream, usually fulfilling a wish or psychological need. An unrealistic or improbable supposition. Music. See fantasia. A coin issued especially by a questionable authority and not intended for use as currency. Obsolete. A hallucination. Science fiction is defined at www.dictionary.com this way: n. A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background. -or- n : literary fantasy involving the imagined impact of science on society. That pretty much defines it for me.
Body: I hate scary movies. I loved The Nightmare Before Christmas, in the same way that I love haunted corn mazes. I recently watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was almost as creepy as The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I loved it too. I don't watch that many movies and I don't claim to be a Tim Burton expert, but I think...that I like Tim Burton Movies. Here's my problem. Someone recently pointed out to me that Tim Burton may be be exploiting evil. Do I really want my future children watching cute dolls burning up and losing their eyeballs and Santa being tortued in a "hell like" place? Are Tim Burton movies just too evil...or are they creepy done just right?
Body: (mild spoilers. proceed at your own risk!) alrighty. so i finished watching the new episode (2-11) of the second session of season two. it was interesting. I loved the introduction of the "Resurrection ship." Wasn't expecting that. But what i want to talk about isnt so much the plot or the events of this particular episode, but rather the "direction" that the show is going. Is it me, or are the writers trying REALLY hard to get the viewer to sympathize with cylons? Isn't that weird, that we're all starting to hate Admiral Cain for her aggressive hatred of cylons and appreciate Adama's apology to the cylon Sharon that they have in the brig? The attempted "rape" scene in the first half of the season was an ugly display of humanity, but you have to ask yourself - "is it possible to 'rape' a machine?" Wow..that sounds really gross. Moving on. And the show also tried to make us feel sorry for the cylon that they fed to the airlock. Come on! They're frackin' machines! They are robots. Toasters. The more I watch the show, the more I realize that I'm forgetting that the cylons are the enemy. And I'm starting to feel sorry for some of them? What? That would be like the Jews feeling bad for Nazi's. "Sure you tried to eliminate our entire race, but it's o.k. cause i realize now that you have feelings too." No way. The cylons should be terminated, down to the very last one. They obliterated the original colonies (billions dead, btw) , leaving only a handful of stragglers that fled to the safety of space. So I don't hate Cain for her hatred of cylons. I don't appreciate what she did to the civilian ships and their families and she'll hopefully fry for that. But you can't blame her for terminating a few toasters. Sure the cylons are made up of biological parts and now have the appearance of a "humanoid." We didnt feel so bad for them, when they were the older "tin-can" model. Now they're 'almost' human. But in the end they're 100% evil. I don't feel sorry for them just because they have a state of biological existence. So do chickens and I eat them.
Body: "Entertainment Weekly is reporting on the end of Firefly." From the article: "Alas, Whedon's fond memories are also tainted by Serenity's status as a franchise nonstarter; despite Universal's best marketing efforts, the film only mustered $25 million. He has no regrets -- and he's moving on." well crap. i really liked the series. sure it was a stretch of the imagination to envision "space ships and offworld dude ranches" but thats o.k. Not any more unbelievable than most sci-fi out there.
