Group Description: Here's what I'm thinking: there are a lot of movies listed at Spout. But, sadly, some are the equivalent of "out of print." Do you think if we get ENOUGH people to ask for the same "out of print" films we can make a difference? Let's try...
Body: Hello everyone!Welcome to the Introduce Yourself group.I thought it would be nice to get to know a few more personal details about some of the people we all interact with on Spout. So here is where you can share more about yourself, if you feel so inclined of course.Well I'll start out. My name is Brian, but many people call me "Rizzo". I grew up around Grand Rapids, MI where Spout is actually located. Actually I am from Jenison, but then went to college at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. I actually didn't hear about Spout until after I had moved to Chicago after college, which is where I still am at.Like probably the majority of the Grand Rapids population, I am from Dutch descent. Although Risselada doesn't sound like a Dutch name, it is. I grew up with a great family, wonderful parents, and two younger brothers.Growing up I didn't do anything too unusual. Watched at lot of TV, played a lot of video games. Never have been very big into sports though. Don't really follow professional sports or anything like that. I did play soccer every year until 8th grade though. In high school I played Trombone and was all kinds of school bands like marching band, orchestra, jazz band, playing for musicals. I sang in a church choir too. And eventually I learned the bass guitar which I played with different groups here and there. I was also a big Mac geek. And occasionally a trouble maker, usually more subversive than malicious. In college I first intended to study film, but then became extremely interested in theatre as well. We had a fantastic theatre program at our college in my opinion, and luckily enough an amazing group of classmates with a lot of talent and ambition. Theatre became my major, although I still took many film classes. I made several videos while in college as well and had a great time with that.Throughout my time in college I became infatuated with improv, as in theatrical improv. I figured out pretty early on in college that I wanted to move to Chicago eventually because this is really the birthplace of current mainstream improv as performance and is still the epicenter. It's hard for me to remember when I first became extremely interested in film. It may be when I finally turned seventeen and was able to start renting any kind of movies I wanted to. The thing about film as an art form is that it can encompass almost any other kind of artwork out there. It seems to have the most potential and possibilities. It's quicker and easier to experience than a book, but can be just as absorbing. Unlike a play, it will essentially be the same every time you see it. This makes plays more fresh, but allows movies to be discussed by people from all different times and places as long as they have seen the same movie at some point they have usually seen the same thing (which of course is what pisses me off when movies aren't presented in a consistent format).Currently I'm still doing improv. My main team is called Very Real Cops (just ask me if you are ever going to be in Chicago if we happen to be doing a show). I'm working for an insurance company in the Loop which is working out fairly well for me. I've been involved in a good church community here. Trying to watch a lot of good movies of course. And always searching out new good music to go out and see or fill up my ipod with. And in a week I'm moving out of my current apartment and parting ways with my roommates. I'll be moving into my own tiny little studio apartment, but am pretty excited about it.Well that's quite a bit about me. Hopefully this doesn't all sound too self-indulgent, but my purpose of this group is really to hear more about all of you. So please let us all know!
So please let us all know!</spout:body>

Body: As ridiculous as the 347 year old Dick Clark can be, his whole "Music is the soundtrack to tour lives" quotes is...well, pretty ridiculous as well. Still, there's something about it that clicks, I think. Sometimes music is overused and misused in movies. Like Cameron Crowe's recent film Elizabethtown. You know, it's easy to enjoy a movie just because there's lots of great music, when in fact underneath it all is an all-too familiar plot, silly-shallow characters, and...well, that's about it. But then there's filmmakers who place just the right song in just the right places and as a result makes a great film more magical. I think Wes Anderson is a great example. I mean, when Gwynneth Paltrow (the troubled adopted daughter in The Royal Tennenbaums) meets Luke Wilson on the train station while Neco's version of "These Days" plays...it sets a perfect atmosphere of moments all viewers can relate to. So what's your top five favorite soundtracks? Here's mine to start: 1. Rushmore: From obscure Kinks tracks ("Nothing in this World Stops Me Worrying About That Girl") to forgotten Donovan classics, the soundtrack's songs are as quirky and marginalized as Max Fisher. 2. Can't Hardly Wait: If the film had any depth or practical wisdom I wouldn't like it nearly as much as I do. It's just about naive, clueless highshool graduates with only two priorities: have fun and fall in love. I think its soundtrack, with greats like Third Eye Blind, Parliament, and Matthew Sweet, is the perfect pomp and circumstance for the film's characters. 3. Forrest Gump: Sure, maybe a double disc of nearly EVERY pop classic from 1955-1975 was a bit much. But like the movie, these songs never lose their heartwarming charm. 4. Stand By Me: No other film better illustrates childhood friendship. And the songs that the ragtag boys sing and walk along to as they search for a dead body remind us what it was like to be young. Standout track/scene? "Lollipop." 5. Night On Earth: Tom Waits, my favorite singer, did the wonderful soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's breakthrough film. Now, what are yours?
Body: Howdy all!If you didn't notice it already, we have made a number of changes/enhancements to Groups on Spout...most of it from your feedback. Please give it a once over and let us know what you think. The enhancements sound be most beneficial for those who currently "own" a group. So if you don't own one yet, go ahead and get started. Body: So I was thinking this weekend about my favorite aspects of Spout and I think that I've isolated it to the social networking aspect of the site. I love the design, the movies and everything else, but it's really the people that keep me coming back and interacting with the site. In thinking of how one could take adavantage of the social aspect to the site I came up with two ideas.First, when it comes to the groups, I would try and highlight those a bit more. Right now, information on the groups is listed under the My People section, but I might encourage you to move that info straight onto the My Page section of the site. This way the groups are highlighted on the first page that someone sees after logging into Spout. I believe that the stronger you can connect an individual to a group that the more sticky the site will be for them and by giving it front page exposure, you can encourage participation. You could either just show the groups that people are already in, but I might try and highlight a group of the week or maybe all recent groups, etc. I'm not sure how you do the details really, but I do think that this is Spout's greatest strength and anyway that you can increase participation in the groups will be a real benefit to the community.Secondily, I was thinking about how one could use the information on Spout to network with other members and I think it might be cool if we had wikis that we could create for actors, directors, independent studios, etc. My idea would be to have Spout create the tools and then let the community populate the data. You could allow someone to create a page for an actress for example that lists their films, links to fan sites or photos, that automatically picks up any conversation threads where they are mentioned (or perhaps where the wiki is linked to), etc. The idea would be to allow independent filmakers/actors to showcase the work they've done by highlighting all of their accomplishments. Eventually, I could see you using this information to recruit actors for films or to help the consumer find other films that the indie's are working on. I'm not sure how much work this would be to create and in all honesty, I can't say that I'd personally use this feature a lot, but if after seeing a great film, I could find out more about some little know producer, I think that it could help to enhance the social networking aspect of the site. Right now you have a list of all movies that someone was involved in, but you can't search by actor or director and it doesn't show any of the conversations that people are having about them. By figuring out an automated way to connect information that Spout members write about an actor or director and then implementing that into their bio, I think that you could really create a powerful tool that could be used to help filmakers and viewers.
Body: As a companion to the "What was the LAST film that scared you" thread, do you remember the very first film that scared the living daylights out of you? For me, it was Darby O'Gill and the Little People -- a Disney movie! (Oh, the shame!) But I was just a little kid at the time, and when I saw those Banshees, I was afraid to go to sleep for days afterwards, thinking they would come and carry me away!Oh, and ladies, I was too young to appreciate it at the time, but this is a notable film for another reason...it was the movie debut of 20-year-old Sean Connery!
This page will be available tomorrow (6.6.07) by the end of the day. Let us know what you think!Cheers!Bill
Body: So, I have this incredibly fond memory of being about 4 or 5 (1973 or 1974) and living in Indianapolis, IN. My parents used to watch this TV channel that had some great (and not so great) sci-fi films on it on a regular basis. I think I knew what night they came on, because I would always make sure not to fall asleep that night and then sneak downstairs to watch TV, huddled hidden in the shadows. On one particular night I think I coughed or sneezed and gave away my location. To my surprise, my folks invited me to watch what was on that night...and I have been thinking about this film ever since. This is what I remember:probably came out in the 50's or 60'shad to do with a family or group of people taking a spaceship trip to visit another planeton the planet they met the hospitality of a scientist or doctor?this person had many robot helpers......but we find out that the robots are actually manned by aliens (or would the robots have been aliened?)i seem to remember very bright vivid colors, which is why I'm thinking early technicolori think the title was "The Incredible..." or "The Amazing..." something...but this could be wrong too That's all I remember. Might not have even been movie, could have been a TV show too. But that's what I have. Can anyone help me with this?
Body: One test of a truly great film is to examine its ending. It's said that the hardest part about painting is knowing when to stop. We all know how most big budget films rely on formulaic storylines and "Hollywood" endings. But even among good films, a promising start looses its value when the film goes nowhere. Too often, they go on too long, meander aimlessly, or just seem unresolved. I don't mean wrapped in a nice little bow, with no questions remaining. I mean where the last five mintues are as compelling as the first – hopefully even more.
Body: There are a lot of movies that stick out in people's minds when they think of Marilyn Monroe, but mine happens to be How to Marry a Millionaire. I really like that film. There is something about seeing Marilyn as a kind of mousey kid with glasses that really tickles me. Everyone is good in that film, but I think that I was most impressed by Marilyn.
