Group Name: B Movies - B is for better
Group Description:
B movies are like the original Not Ready for Primetime Players--funny, brave, brainless, learned, rowdy, rough, ribald, and dangerous.

B movies can be like a seven dollar bottle of champagne, miles away from the real thing but every bit as fun. (Semi-Pro)

They can be like absinthe, so bizarre you wonder if you're actually enjoying yourself. Nobody else will be able to tell you. (Eraserhead)

They can be like moonshine. Lightning in a bottle, you wonder how the maker captured it, you wonder if they even know how good it is or if they could do it again. (The Night of the Hunter)

They're like surprise hard cider. Something that's been set aside, and then you find it by accident, take a tentative sip, and it knocks you to the floor! (Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women)

They're like straight Yagermeister, the kind with deerblood and mercury in it. An acquired taste that never lets you forget how dangerous it is, and others can't fathom why you're in love with it. (Wicker Man--1974).

Group Description:
My name is Larry Carrell and I am a partner in Ungowa Films and the writer, co-director, and Bruce of our 2008 feature Game Over The Secret Life of Game Store Clerks. I am starting this group to have a place to invite people to discuss my film, and keep people posted as things progress.

I would also like to invite other new filmmakers to share their adventure hardships and heartaches here. One thing we all share is a passion and with that fire comes a lot of drama. Some days good some days bad. Blow off some steam here friends, I can definetly relate.

I look forward to talking to you all!

Thanks,

Body: Gabe over at Videogum has been doing a series for a little over a year now called "Hunt for the Worst Movie of All Time" that is pretty stinking great. He takes suggestions from the readers and gives hilarious in-depth commentary on what he sees, complete with film clips and animated GIFs. While I'd argue with some of his picks ("Rachel Getting Married" is on the coming soon list), sometimes it's just fun to read his ranting. Has anyone else been reading this? Thoughts?
Body: Manda Bala Directed by Jason Kohn. Starring Jader Barbalho, Claudio Fonteles, Helbio Dias, Juarez Avelar, Paulo Lamarao, Mario Lucio Avelar. Brazil is a nation where political and economic corruption and violent crime are a way of life for many, and filmmaker Jason Kohn examines some of the more unusual ways they manifest themselves in this documentary. In Manda Bala (Send a Bullet), Kohn's subjects include a plastic surgeon whose practice is dominated by the victims of kidnappers who lost their ears to their captors; a political figure who uses his frog ranch as a cover for illegal business operations which have made him a multi-millionaire; and an auto customizer whose specialty is bullet-proofing luxury cars. Manda Bala (Send A Bullet) won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. Watchmen is coming out pretty soon, and up until last week I don't think I could ever say I'd read a graphic novel before. Someone lent me their copy of this book, and I'm actually only halfway through it still, but I'm really hooked. So for this poll I tried to pick movies that came strictly from graphic novels. For instance there were some I was originally going to add, but my research indicates that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series and 30 Days of Night is a comic book mini-series. In the case of American Splendor I couldn't tell if these were "comic books" or "novels" (I haven't seen the movie either...) so I just left it off to keep the list as focused as possible. And as for anything Japanese or manga based, that's just another huge world that I might do another poll about later, but for now I didn't include anything from that. Sorry if I missed your favorite, but please feel free to discuss. Please vote only once in each poll. Movies referenced in this poll:300From HellGhost WorldA History of ViolencePersepolisRoad to PerditionSin CityV for Vendetta
Body: I have 35 of these TOO!!! Uncounted From the back of the cover: Uncounted is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 and now looms as an unbridled threat to elections in 2008 and beyond. The controversial feature-length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Beyond increasing the public's awareness, UNCOUNTED inspires greater citizen involvement in fixing a broken electoral system. As we approach the decisive election of 2008, UNCOUNTED will change how you feel about the way votes are counted in America. Sounds exciting...
Body: I've finally reached that age where it seems all of my friends are getting married. The ceremonies are fun: watching my buddies committing their lives to a person they love, but what is even better is when there is an open bar and a decently catered meal. Wedding Crashers was a hilarious film based almost entirely on this notion. Knowing my friends, I'm surprised that none of them have had one of those spur of the moment weddings in Las Vegas at a 24 hour chapel with an Elvis impersonator like in What Happens In Vegas and Love Stinks. Speaking of Vegas, there are a lot of movies featuring the pre-wedding bachelor party going there and everything running amuck like in Very Bad Things. But don't get me wrong, those intimate family weddings following years of tradition are cool too. With kilts and bagpipes, Mike Myers has a traditional Scottish wedding in So I Married An Axe Murderer; Mira Nair showed us the ups and downs of an arranged Indian marriage in Monsoon Wedding; and of course Disney has perverted the minds of millions of young girls by making them believe that fairy tale weddings like in Enchanted, etc are the only way to get married (which has resulted in films like Bride Wars when everything doesn't go right).
Body: Here's an easy question just to get some activity going in this group for a change - and sorry about that, but I haven't seen much released lately in the States lately, and I haven't been able to watch many movies in general lately (hence my lack of activity) so we have to look back: what's your favorite British or Britain-inspired film? It can be anything so long as the accent's included, hee hee.I'd say my two favorites are two of my honestly favorite movies of all time: Bridget Jones' Diary (ok, so Renee Zellweger is from Texas, but you don't even notice, most of the time) and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Are they cliche? Maybe, but I watch and quote these repeatedly. I've got loads of others, but these jump to mind. Though I've kind of stopped identifying them as "British" only because I really have seen them so much and so often. Plus, I identify with good ole Bridge, and while I don't identify with the crazy English k-nig-its of Holy Grail, I quote it in conversation quite a bit. You'd be amazed at how many uses there are for lines from this movie.Anyways, discuss your favorites here!
Body: I can't get this short little montage out of my head, but I can't remember what movie it's from. There's a voice over narration talking about a character in the movie. It's talking about how he had a relative who died in every major American war, and there's a quick montage of each of his relatives being shot and killed in different era war uniforms. I'm not even sure if this was a movie I liked, but I know I've seen it. What is it???
Body: The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things Directed by Asia Argento. Starring Asia Argento, Peter Fonda, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Jimmy Bennett. Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: I've recently been watching Heroes, which resulted in some poor sci-fi trivia, and something, actually many things, bother me about the series. One of the biggest issues is time travel. I feel like the ability to travel in time is too common, and that it is often very poorly explained because explaining it is too complex, but understanding the ramifications of allowing such a device to exist in film or television can be even more confusing. Needless to say I'm fairly disappointed with Heroes' treatment of time travel. I wanted to know if anyone felt there were films in which time travel was used that didn't result in conflicts in the logic of events, etc. Preferably it would be used intelligently, unlike Hiro Nakamura's brainless journeys through the space/time continuum.
Body: So the other day I am in the shower , pondering as well as washing. And I was thinking about all I learned from shooting Game Over when I realized that some where along the way I kinda lost focus on the original vision that was Game Over. Granted that was easy to do, our very first project, no money to keep things going,...blah blah blah. We were also really worried about it being feature length and not being a short to prove we could do a feature. I was suddenly possessed with a desire to do a project that served inspiration. A project thats soul purpose was to tell one story and tell it well to the best of my ability. It doesn't matter how long it is or how short it is. Just that it works. I am taking everything else out of the equation, There is no budget. I will have to use things I already have access to. There will be no deadline. We will do it till it is right. There is no pressure. This is not for sale I will post it free for everyone to see. So the script is written, we are casting and I am storyboarding now. The plan to shoot in late Feb 2009. This will show a whole different side of Ungowa Films. And for the first time in a long time I am excited. When I am inspired these things burn inside me untill I get them out, ...and that is a good place to be. Peace, Larry
Body: I just received three(3) copies of this from our very own Ungowafilms user. He is working quite hard currently at promoting this film on Spout. Film detail page: http://www.spout.com/films/374060/default.aspx If any of you are interested in checking this very indy flick out let me know. Otherwise it will probably just find its way to one of your mailboxes whether you like it or not. :) I know I know, I'm a jerk. Honestly though it looks interesting enough. I'd watch it but I'd feel bad if I break the nice shrinkwrap on the case.
Body: I just read an interesting article on Newsweek entitled The Way We Were. It begins: "If artists depend on angst and unrest to fuel their creative fire, then at least in one sense the 43rd presidency has been a blessing." That's probably true, and I wanted everyone to give an example of a film that was created in the past eight that exemplifies the era of our 43rd president. I would like to recommend: Why We Fight I feel that this documentary, while obviously biased, provides insight into the current era because docs were ridiculously popular, and because it provided me with parallels to help me understand what we were engaging in. It represents the speed with which we are able to "look back" at the direction our nation is headed, which is obviously significantly faster than ever before.
Body: LOL Directed by Joe Swanberg. Starring Joe Swanberg, Kevin Bewersdorf, C. Mason Wells, Tipper Newton, Brigid Reagan. The constant need to be plugged-in and connected threatens to crash the real life operating system of three technologically obsessed twenty-somethings in director Joe Swanberg's humorous meditation on the relationship between man and machine in modern society. Tim does computer work for a living, but he also lives for his computer. Unfortunately his inability to snap the lid closed on his laptop is rapidly alienating his girlfriend Ada, who recognizes Tim's apparent inability to communicate with other people without the buffer of technology. Meanwhile, as struggling musician Alex obsesses over a girl he met on an adult website, flesh-and-blood girl named Walter does her best to make her attraction to Alex known. Lastly, Chris has transferred from New York to Chicago due to the demands of his job, making a long distance relationship with his east coast girlfriend Greta increasingly difficult to maintain. Though the pair talks constantly on their cell-phones while also sending cell-phone pictures to one and other, neither Chris nor Greta can deny that their reliance on technology in sustaining their relationship is no substitute for the living, breathing warmth of human companionship. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: We got a pretty good start to a list going for essential films dealing with issues surrounding femininity. One thing I noticed, however, is that the films seem predominately feminist/pro-woman. Generally speaking, Hollywood seems to have a negative image for its portrayal of women, from body image to passe stereotypes, however, our list seems to indicate otherwise. Some points for discussion: -Is this accurate, or are we just seeing a subversion of the old cultural standards? -How is Hollywood propogating or subverting the old stereotypes today? -Is Hollywood promoting a feminist agenda or not? Just some points to ponder. I have my opinions, but I'd love to hear everyone else's first...
Body: I watched La Moustache last week and am still trying to figure it out. It kind of drove me nuts. It's a Kafkaesque tale about a guy who shaves his moustache and loses it when neither his wife nor his friends notice the change, claiming he's never had a moustache. Has anyone seen this? Are you as confused as I am, or do you have some insight as to what the hell was going on at the end of this movie?
Body: Just from looking at the Mumblecore map, I would have to say that I enjoyed Great World of Sound quite a bit. It was torn down and transparent, which I felt added to the overall realism and humor of the film. I also liked George Washington for a lot of the same reasons. When I watched it, I wouldn't have labeled it "mumblecore", but when I think more about it, the filmmaking reflects a lot of the same characteristics. Its interesting seeing how all of these films and directors are related. I would never have drawn the connection between HomestarRunner and George Washington:)So, what are your favorites?
Body: Summer Palace (2006) Directed by Lou Ye. Starring Hao Lei, Guo Xiaodong, Hu Ling, Zhang Xianmin. A romance takes place against some of the most turbulent events in recent Chinese history in this epic-scale story from filmmaker Lou Ye. Yu Hong (Hao Lei) is a beautiful seventeen-year-old girl who is soon to leave the small border town where she was born and raised to attend college at Beijing University. Shortly before Yu Hong leaves for school, she gives her virginity to her longtime boyfriend, Xiao, and pledges to remain faithful to him. At Beijing University, Yu Hong makes friends with Li Ti (Hu Ling), another girl dealing with a long distance relationship, and meets Zhou Wei (Guo Xiaodong), a handsome student who soon steals her heart. Yu Hong leaves her relationship with Xiao behind to commit herself to Zhao Wei, and she's swept up by her feelings for him as they embrace the new social and economic freedoms which are being felt on campus. The empowerment felt by the students in Beijing come to a head during a series of demonstrations in Tiananmen Square; the protests have tragic consequences, and the excitement of new possibilities gives way to a feeling of defeat. Yu Hong and Zhou Wei are separated and the heavy hand of the state is brought to bear on the rebellious students. The first Chinese film to feature full-frontal male and female nudity, Yiheyuan (aka Summer Palace) received its world premier as an official selection at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: In order for me to give you a good movie recommendation, we need two things: 1. Most importantly, I have to know something about you. That's the only way I can tailor a recommendation. 2. You have to know a little about what movies I"ve seen and what I look for in a movie. Otherwise, you don't know how much faith to put in the recommendation. I particularly like Drama, Documentaries, Suspense/Thrillers including film noir and neo-noir, and, of course, the rare good Comedy. Although I've seen classic horror flicks and numerous children's films, I really don't know much about them and no longer watch those genres. My approach to films is pretty serious compared to the playful approach many viewers have. I expect the film to have a story that hangs together. Also, with all the human energy and millions of dollars poured into the film, I usually expect it to say something. As concrete examples of what I mean, here are the best films I've seen so far in 2008: Mother of Mine (2005; Finland/Sweden) Gone Baby Gone (2007) 51 Birch Street (2005; documentary) The Italian (2005; Russia) Starting Out in the Evening (2007) Sharkwater (2006; documentary) Charlie Wilson’s War (2007) Longford (2006) Get Smart (2008) Elizabeth I (2005) The Dark Knight (2008) Black Book (The Netherlands; 2006/2007) The Savages (2007) For what it's worth, JIMBELL
As concrete examples of what I mean, here are the best films I've seen so far in 2008: Mother of Mine (2005; Finland/Sweden) Gone Baby Gone (2007) 51 Birch Street (2005; documentary) The Italian (2005; Russia) Starting Out in the Evening (2007) Sharkwater (2006; documentary) Charlie Wilson’s War (2007) Longford (2006) Get Smart (2008) Elizabeth I (2005) The Dark Knight (2008) Black Book (The Netherlands; 2006/2007) The Savages (2007) For what it's worth, JIMBELL</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>10/2/2008 3:16:24 PM</spout:postdate><spout:body>In order for me to give you a good movie recommendation, we need two things: 1. Body: 2008 has been the worst year for movies that I can remember. Although I mean current releases, I mean even more the movies I’ve selected to watch on DVD. The problem could be the way I’m selecting movies. I usually consult three critics and check the Rotten Tomatoes rating. I found The Flight of the Red Balloon boring and pretension, The New World fakey and preachy, The Man Who Wasn’t There mannered and unnatural, Waitress charming and sexist, and so on. So I’m turning to Mavens for help. I will watch almost any genre except horror (too boring). My favs are probably Drama, Suspense/Thriller, Documentary, and that rare good Comedy. I tend to be serious and hold cinema to some of the same standards you’d hold a serious novel to. Thus, for example, I have really liked films adapted well from books e.g., The Princess Bride; The Age of Innocence. I like substantial thrillers such as Blood Diamond, and I enjoy old film noir such as Out of the Past and The Killers. In documentaries I prefer a balanced approach rather than a gonzo journalism approach e.g., Who Killed the Electric Car? impressed me, but I did not want to watch Michael Moore’s Sicko. Although a comedy may be the most difficult movie to make, I’ve recently enjoyed Sunshine and Get Smart. What would you recommend I see next?
The interpretation of some of the items in the book was off, and of-course, they had to hollywood it up with some backroom beatings, chase scenes, etc. Still ... worth seeing....
Body: CleanDirected by Olivier Assayas. Starring Maggie Cheung, Béatrice Dalle, Nick Nolte, Don McKellar, Jeanne Balibar. A woman throws herself into a last-ditch struggle to conquer her demons in this gritty drama from director Olivier Assayas. Lee Hauser (James Johnston) is a faded rock star who lives with his wife, Emily Wang (Maggie Cheung), the former host of a European music video show, in a small town in Western Canada. Both Lee and Emily have been battling drug addiction for years, and when Lee finally dies of an OD, Emily finds herself charged with possession of heroin and ends up spending six months in jail. Lee and Emily's son, Jay (James Dennis), has been living with his paternal grandparents, Albrecht (Nick Nolte) and Rosemary (Martha Henry), and while Emily is eager to see her son after getting out of jail, Albrecht persuades her that she needs to get herself clean before she can reconnect with Jay. Determined to get off methadone, Emily relocates to France, where she scares up a job as a waitress and moves in with her old friend Elena (Béatrice Dalle). Emily's attempts to start a new career and stay off drugs prove to be an uphill battle, and she doesn't appear to be winning her fight when she learns that Albrecht and Jay will be accompanying Rosemary to London for medical treatment when Rosemary contracts a serious illness -- and that Albrecht is considering making a side trip to Paris. Clean was screened in competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: An interesting thing happens when you study the arc of Westerns: one narrative template begins to inform the next. An example: The cattle drivers tame the land and pave the trails at the end of Red River. However ten years later those same cattle drivers are the jerks kicking the Homesteaders off of "their land" in Shane. A supposed "happy ending" results in a very real problem. Name a happy ending from one movie (the cause) and how it informs the problem of a second film (the effect). Like this: Sure the rebels win at the end of Return of the Jedi. But then what? The land is now lawless. Tribes will begin to splinter and argue over the new law. Power must be consolidated to ovoid further conflict. In the wake of war will the war hero remain noble or give in to the dark side and take advantage of the war torn lands... which is the plot to MacBeth (although I prefer Throne of Blood). Be as creative as you can! Show us how that happy ending actually has unforeseen consequences. Cause & Effect!
Body: Wondrous OblivionDirected by Paul Morrison. Starring Delroy Lindo, Stanley Townsend, Emily Woof, Angela Wynter, Sam Smith. Writer/director Paul Morrison, who directed the cross-cultural period drama Solomon and Gaenor, returns to similar ground, though in a lighter vein, with Wondrous Oblivion. Sam Smith stars as David Wiseman, a Jewish boy living in London in 1960 who dreams of being a world-class athlete. David is totally obsessed with cricket, and loves playing, even though he is one of the worst players at his school. His parents, Ruth (Emily Woof of The Full Monty) and Victor (Stanley Townsend), are struggling with the bigoted residents of their working-class neighborhood, but the neighbors get a bit more friendly to the Wisemans when Dennis (Delroy Lindo), a Jamaican laborer, and his family move in next door. David is shocked and delighted when he realizes that Dennis and his daughter, Judy (Leonie Elliott), are installing a cricket pitch in their backyard. Before long, and against the wishes of his worried parents, David is spending a lot of time next door, becoming very friendly with Judy, and becoming a much better cricket player. Ruth gradually warms to Dennis, but the rest of the neighborhood grows increasingly hostile. Wondrous Oblivion was presented by the Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center as part of the 2005 New York Jewish Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
