Body: Its awards season again so we are rapidly finding out which movies everyone loved, but that begs the questions, which ones sucked the most? Lets face it, 2008 left us with a bumper crop of craptacular films. For every Dark Knight there were a dozen Disaster Movies. What are your nominations? *Bonus: it would be fun to divide this into categories, like a real awards show such as... worst cinematography worst picture worst screenplay worst actor/actress worst soundtrack worst foreign film etc... Feel free to categorize your nominations, but don't feel obligated. Can't wait to hear everyone's picks!
Body: Obviously this one will span many an era depending on how old you are. I'm not going to ask for a certain type of film either.Mine:1. The Adventures of Mark Twain. This is forever part of my childhood memories. Love it, love it, love it. If you haven't seen it I'll forgive you so long as you rectify that immediately - it's been on DVD since January 2006, so you can easily get ahold of it now. 2. Labyrinth. Another one permanently imbedded in my memory banks. This, along with Legend, were my first "fantasy" movies and can more-than-likely be blamed for turning me into a nerd. 3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This was my generation's Pokemon. Everyone had action figures, posters, Halloween costumes, etc. I'll refrain from including #2 but I have the same soft spot for it as well.4. The Addams Family. I loved this when I was a kid and I still have to watch it when it comes on telelvision.5. Clerks. Not exactly "childhood" fare but this was my first "grown-up" movie. My sister introduced me to this and Mallrats at the same time and despite Mallrats' potty humor my 12 year-old brain was transfixed by Clerks. This was the genesis of my internal filmmaker.
Body: This week on SpoutBlog, Chris Campbell will build these lists: 10 Best Dysfunctional Families in Movies 10 Most Depressing Holidays in Movies 10 Most Accessible Foreign Language Films of the Last 10 Years* Does anyone have opinions on these? Here's your chance to influence Chris's picks. *I had to laugh when Risselada leeroy711 called Amelie the "gateway drug" of foreign films in this Top 5 Overrated Movies discussion. (Sorry about my flub, leeroy!) UPDATE 11/12: 10 Best Dysfunctional Families by Chris Campbell. I see that a couple of your suggestions showed up! UPDATE 11/13: 10 Most Depressing Holidays Dang, I wanted Earth Day from Bio-Dome to show up! Good work, mercurial. UPDATE 11/14: 10 Most Accessible Foreign Films A lot of you picked films that showed up on Chris's list. Plus, leeroy711 gets quoted! Body: Hey guys, You can see the winner on page 5 of this discussion thread. You can also hear Adam and Matty discuss the contest on the Filmspotting podcast. Our next challenge: take the red pill, recast The Matrix (1999). Have a good holiday weekend, skypilot Top 5 Movies to Teach an Alien About Earth The year is 2010. The United States has a black president, people play golf with titanium sticks, cars are powered by--of all things--hydrogen, and Netflix offers every movie ever made on the Internet. NASA gets a signal from an extra-terrestrial life form. The alien has just signed up for Netflix and wants five movies that will teach it about life on Earth. For reasons too elaborate to explain, you--yes you--have been picked to choose these five movies. Do you go historical with Schindler's List? Or put a positive spin on things with Dumbo? Do you explain children with A Christmas Story and old people with Cocoon? Or do you really roll the dice and send them War of the Worlds? --Paul
Body: Okay, I know there are often films that many people call "great", and you have to bite your tongue to avoid an argument against the masses. Well here are my top five that I dislike. I can't say that I "hate" them, but it sounded like a better discussion topic to say the word "hate". And I'm not just talking about Pirates of the Carribean 8 that will still make a billion dollars, so the "masses" love it, but I'm talking about dissagreements with your respectable peers. This list is in no particular order and just some that came to mind. I'm sure I've got hundreds. 1. Reservoir Dogs - I have to say this film was a big dissapointment. Maybe it was the mood I was in, but it just didn't engage me. Violence and surprises. Not refreshing. It was an amateur film by a then amateur director. 2. Vertigo - Do not get me wrong here, I consider myself a Hitchcock fan, and this may be blasphemy seeing most people say this was his masterpiece. I found it excruciatingly boring, unnecessarily confusing (the first time around), and one of his weaker films. 3. Every James Bond Film - These films are a one trick pony. The franchise is a cliché of itself. Yet whenever there is a new Bond film, everyone and their grandmother want to go see it.4. Ocean's 11 - I mentioned this in the top 5 heist category as one I disliked. I just don't like the genre in general, and this seemed like a rehash of the genre (i know i know it was a remake). It seems like somebody thought it was actually smart to have "a bunch of really interesting characters pull off a heist, and have hillarity and trouble ensue!"5. Anchorman - Why is this film funny? Why do my friends think Will Ferrel is so great? All he did in this movie is talk in his deep voice that he does for every other character, and act like every other snl character he ever played. I absolutely despised this film (and his most recent Talledega Nights was atrocious as well). You can argue me here, I'd actually like to see some defense for these films. What are your films that everyone else loves but you don't?
Body: What are your top favorite films that depict or deal with a post-apocalyptic scenario? Here's some of mine.1. Twelve Monkeys. Ok, as a time travel movie of sorts the majority of the film takes place just before the apocalyptic events, but you get glimpses of what is to come, and the whole thing feels ominous.2. Delicatessen. It's been a while since I've seen this, but I do recall the brilliance of the character whose more and more supposedly sure-fire suicide attempts are repeatedly foiled. And also the floor of a bathroom crumbling away.3. The Road Warrior. Not only the perfect sparse post-apocalyptic sets with makeshift technology, but also probably the greatest straight-up action movie.4. Six-String Samurai. I don't hear a lot of people talk about this one, but it's a whole lot of fun.5. Le Dernier Combat (The Final Combat). Sparse, laconic, brutal, strange. Just like you'd expect a real post-apocalypse.6 (if I can). Waterworld. Seriously, whatever qualms you might have about the film, can you deny the impact of the sets, costumes, atmosphere, all of that? I have yet to see The Postman, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I actually love it.Anime does a good job at really giving a good feeling of post-apocalyptic worlds too. Almost any fantasy or adventure anime could be applied actually. There are countless fantastic examples, but I'll mention Akira and Wolf's Rain as two of my personal favorites, even if they aren't the most appropriate examples.I have a few more that are worth mentioning, but I'd like to see what other people come up with first.
We started to think about how great it would be for PBS to explore the Star Wars Universe. Body: The winners are discussed on page 6 of this thread and on the Filmspotting podcast. CAST BATMAN 3 The unfortunate passing of Heath Ledger made The Dark Knight an even bigger cliffhanger than it was meant to be. If the Joker's story isn't resolved, it'll be like if Han Solo had never been freed from carbonite. On the other hand, maybe there's another villain worthy of taking the spotlight after the Joker's turn in The Dark Knight. Pick a villain and an actor to play him. Write a brief letter to Christopher Nolan, convincing him your villain is worthy of being the Dark Knight's adversary in Batman 3. Some people are saying Johnny Depp would make a great Riddler, but is the Riddler a great villain? So choose a villain and an actor, and the most exciting pair wins. The hard working publicists at spout.com will try their darndest to get the winning choices in front of Christopher Nolan. No guarantees, but it's worth a shot, huh?
Body: In less than 200 words, share your most scarring movie memory in this thread. We'll pick the most traumatic experience, announce the winner on Filmspotting and send them some Spout swag. I'll be the first divulge dark secrets with my most scarring memory... Even more than watching Luke’s hand get axed by Darth Vader, was E.T. I was six years old watching what I felt was the greatest movie ever conceived, when E.T. gets sick, he goes missing and Elliot’s older brother goes to find him. Find him he does, unconscious laying next to a drainage ditch in the LA suburbs, all pink and fleshy looking like a skinned cow carcass sculpted to look like an alien. I burst into tears and climbed in my mom’s lap. I wanted to go home. Even the messianic resurrection and E.T.’s pick up by the homeboys on the mother ship didn’t undo the damage.I was literally a full grown adult living on my own before I finally stopped getting butterflies in my stomach each time the lights went down in a movie theater. If I could hang words on that instinctive feeling, they would be, “What the f@#k am I about to get myself into? Another E.T.?”
Another E.T.?”</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>6/6/2008 11:26:11 AM</spout:postdate><spout:body>In less than 200 words, share your most scarring movie memory in this thread. Body: Could a remake of Ghostbusters (1984) ever be worth watching? It's especially hard for me to imagine recasting Bill Murray. Bill Murray ... Body: This week, we're recasting The Princess Bride (1987). It's a classic that would be a travesty for some money hungry Hollywood exec to try and remake, which is exactly why we're imagining a remake. I hope a new cast comes out of this that makes me salivate for a remake, but I predict this will be an exercise in imagining how bad a remake of this movie could screw up.This is a FIlmspotting contest and a winner will be announced on the Filmspotting podcast April 18, 2008. Extra credit goes to anyone who casts Samuel L. Jackson and rewrites a classic Princess Bride quote just for him. Cary Elwes ... WestleyRobin Wright Penn ...
