Body: If you wanted to pair two movies (not sequels) together what movies would you watch together and why? I'd pair The Bear with Grizzly Man. The Bear is a story of how an older grizzly takes care of a young bear who las lost his mother and how they just want to get along and wouldn't bother people at all if it wasn't for the mean hunters who are after them. Werner Herzog takes documentary footage from a man who was a self taught expert on bears, before he was eaten by them, and turned it into Grizzly Man. The other pairing I have would be F for Fake and The Hoax. In F for Fake, Orson Welles interviews Clifford Irving, a journalist who spent a fair amount of time interviewing a famous art forger, who could never be convicted. The Hoax tells the story of Irving a few years later when he created forged Howard Hughes diaries and sold them for fun and profit. What pairs do you have?
Body: An interesting thing happens when you study the arc of Westerns: one narrative template begins to inform the next. An example: The cattle drivers tame the land and pave the trails at the end of Red River. However ten years later those same cattle drivers are the jerks kicking the Homesteaders off of "their land" in Shane. A supposed "happy ending" results in a very real problem. Name a happy ending from one movie (the cause) and how it informs the problem of a second film (the effect). Like this: Sure the rebels win at the end of Return of the Jedi. But then what? The land is now lawless. Tribes will begin to splinter and argue over the new law. Power must be consolidated to ovoid further conflict. In the wake of war will the war hero remain noble or give in to the dark side and take advantage of the war torn lands... which is the plot to MacBeth (although I prefer Throne of Blood). Be as creative as you can! Show us how that happy ending actually has unforeseen consequences. Cause & Effect!
For this one please only post one entry per post. I think it gives the Mad Lib more variety when we have different minds from one insert to the next. Body: I got this idea from watching The 400 Blows this weekend. It only took me about 5 minutes to come up with a pretty long list of films that have to do with being incarcerated in some sense. Some films use this setting as the backdrop of some grave injustice such as false accusation such as Jim Sheridan’s fantastic film, In The Name Of The Father. Sometimes the jail cell is used in comedies like Jim Jarmusch’s Down By Law. Other times we just deal with the emotional and mental drama associated with dealing with your loss of personal freedom such as in American History X and The 25th Hour. And I haven’t even mentioned escape films, like The Shawshank Redemption and Brute Force which is somewhat of a sub-genre in itself. So, with the plethora of films we’ve seen dealing with being locked up in mind, let’s hear about which are some of your favorites. More specifically, what is your favorite scene, shot inside a jail cell or detention center of some sort? For me, there are two scenes that have touched me for drastically different reasons. The first is the triumphant moment in which Luke (Paul Newman) in Cool Hand Luke chokes down his 50th egg. You really can’t help but to rejoice and laugh at the same time with this one. The second one for me is one of the most unforgettable scenes of all time. The moment that Giuseppe (Pete Postelthwaite) dies in In The Name Of The Father leads into a great shot. All of the inmates light pieces of paper and throw them out of their cell windows yelling, “Giuseppe’s dead!” The prison walls look as though they are crying tears of flames. Well, that’s what I’ve got, let’s hear it. Remember, I also want to know about some of your favorite specific scenes as well. Emery
Body: You'll find the winners of our new pack of Reservoir Dogs contest at the end of this thread and on this week's Filmspotting podcast. hang loose, skypilot ______________________ In honor of Heath Ledger's irreplaceable role as the Joker, we've picked the most difficult recasting game we could think of: recast Reservoir Dogs. Switching out Keitel or Buscemi is like putting on a new pair of shoes that are filled with swamp water. I don't even know exactly what that means, but the point is, it would feel really wrong. Body: With the summer months waning and my own plans for vacation steadily approaching, it seemed apropos to dedicate this week's theme to that equally loved and despised category of film known as the road movie. From the family-friendly RV to the magnificently perverse Natural Born Killers, the road movie appears in countless incarnations and across all genres. Personally, Almost Famous has remained not only my favorite road movie but overall one as well. The aforementioned Natural Born Killers, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Dogma, Little Miss Sunshine, Boys on the Sideand Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas round off the list. Others include Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation and The Living End; the various Aussie flicks like the Mad Max trilogy and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; the Indie hits such as Easy Rider and Buffalo '66; and lastly Alexander Payne's About Schmidt and Sideways. So bring out the map and let us in on some your favorite road movies!
Body: The winners of the Matrix recasting contest have been announced at the end of this discussion and on the Filmspotting podcast. Take the Red Pill: Recast THE MATRIX (1999) Here's a bit of trivia: did you know the Wachowski brothers originally conceived of The Matrix as a graphic novel? The movie pitch they presented to Warner Brothers was 600 pages of storyboard, pretty much a graphic novel in itself. For those who gripe about Keanu Reeves, it's time to put your money where your mouth is and pick a better Neo. But can anyone fill Hugo Weaving's shoes? I've been imagining other actors saying "Mister An-der-son," and they all just seem...wrong. Keanu Reeves ... Neo Laurence Fishburne ... Morpheus Carrie-Anne Moss ... Trinity Hugo Weaving ... Agent Smith Gloria Foster ... Oracle Joe Pantoliano ... Cypher Marcus Chong ... Tank Julian Arahanga ... Apoc Matt Doran ... Mouse Belinda McClory ... Switch Anthony Ray Parker ... Dozer Paul Goddard ... Agent Brown Robert Taylor ... Agent Jones Here are the names again so you can copy/paste them more easily: Keanu Reeves ...
