Body: The winners of the Matrix recasting contest have been announced at the end of this discussion and on the Filmspotting podcast. Take the Red Pill: Recast THE MATRIX (1999) Here's a bit of trivia: did you know the Wachowski brothers originally conceived of The Matrix as a graphic novel? The movie pitch they presented to Warner Brothers was 600 pages of storyboard, pretty much a graphic novel in itself. For those who gripe about Keanu Reeves, it's time to put your money where your mouth is and pick a better Neo. But can anyone fill Hugo Weaving's shoes? I've been imagining other actors saying "Mister An-der-son," and they all just seem...wrong. Keanu Reeves ... Neo Laurence Fishburne ... Morpheus Carrie-Anne Moss ... Trinity Hugo Weaving ... Agent Smith Gloria Foster ... Oracle Joe Pantoliano ... Cypher Marcus Chong ... Tank Julian Arahanga ... Apoc Matt Doran ... Mouse Belinda McClory ... Switch Anthony Ray Parker ... Dozer Paul Goddard ... Agent Brown Robert Taylor ... Agent Jones Here are the names again so you can copy/paste them more easily: Keanu Reeves ... Body: Hip hop music began in the early 1970s in New York City with the advent of breakbeat DJing. Kool DJ Herc, Grandmaster Flash and other DJs extended the breaks (short percussion interludes) of funk records. This use of extended percussion breaks led to the development of mixing and scratching techniques. As hip hop's popularity grew, performers began speaking while the music played, and became known as MCs or emcees. Melle Mel, a rapper in the group Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five was the first to call himself "MC". Performers often emceed for hours at a time, with some improvisation and a simple four-count beat and basic chorus. MCs grew more varied in their vocal and rhythmic approach, incorporating brief rhymes, often with a theme. These early raps had precursors and parallels in other aspects of African American culture, such as the dozens and signifying (see Roots of hip hop music).
