Body: Manda Bala Directed by Jason Kohn. Starring Jader Barbalho, Claudio Fonteles, Helbio Dias, Juarez Avelar, Paulo Lamarao, Mario Lucio Avelar. Brazil is a nation where political and economic corruption and violent crime are a way of life for many, and filmmaker Jason Kohn examines some of the more unusual ways they manifest themselves in this documentary. In Manda Bala (Send a Bullet), Kohn's subjects include a plastic surgeon whose practice is dominated by the victims of kidnappers who lost their ears to their captors; a political figure who uses his frog ranch as a cover for illegal business operations which have made him a multi-millionaire; and an auto customizer whose specialty is bullet-proofing luxury cars. Manda Bala (Send A Bullet) won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: There are certain films which are aching for a Criterion release. My suggestions are Night and Dawn of the Dead (the original Romero versions of course). Also I think there should be at least one Errol Morris film in the collection. Also the Bicycle thief should be in there, even though they included Umberto D. As for films that don't deserve to be in the collection: the Rock, Armageddon, RoboCop, and Fat Girl. Anything Michael Bay deserves to be burned.
Body: Better late than never right? This week is all about the ancient Japaneese art of Karaoke. It seems like I've been seeing this more often than usual lately. There's of course the great scene with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation. I loved her in the pink wig. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Polish Brothers used this as a theme in Jackpot. It's about a guy traveling the country, entering as many Karaoke contests as he can. He does the same song every time, George Jones' 'The Grand Tour' I've also been watching some Korean movies lately. There always seems to be a good Karaoke scene in those. A Dirty Carnival and Memories of Murder are two good examples. Anyway, it's part of pop-culture; therefore, you will see it in movies until it dies out. What do y'all think?
Body: C'mon Magic Bus..................... Or would you prefer The Double-Dutch Bus.......... fo-shizzle. Lets talk about movies or scenes that take place in or revolve around various forms of public transportation. Hmmm, let's see. There's buses. Such as the Brazillian documentary Bus 174 about a hostage stand-off. Oh yeah, there's allways "Pop quiz hot-shot!" How about subways and trains? I loved Dark Days. A doc about the people that live in underground in the subway systems of NY. I also really liked a Hungarian movie called Kontroll that takes place entirely in the subways of Budapest. Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes was about a train ride and Kurosawa's High and Low has a great scene on a train. (my beautiful wifey bought me that one for Christmas) I read he used something like 9 different camera angles to get that scene and in such a small space it was quite an accomplishment. I know taxies aren't exactly "public" transportation but let's throw those in there too. You've got Taxi DriverTaxi Driver (1976) and I think Micheal Mann made a pretty underrated movie with Collateral to name a couple. So, what else??
Body: The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things Directed by Asia Argento. Starring Asia Argento, Peter Fonda, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, Jimmy Bennett. Actress and filmmaker Asia Argento directed this faithful screen adaptation of the fictional J.T. Leroy's fictional memoir, which documents a boy's truly harrowing road to adulthood. Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett) is the seven-year-old son of Sarah (Asia Argento), an unstable and unwed mother who abandoned her son and left him to be raised by foster parents. Jeremiah has come to love his guardians, and is devastated when Sarah arrives at their doorstep, demanding her child back. Threatening Jeremiah with torture if he tries to run away, Sarah introduces her young son to drugs and encourages her one-night-stand paramours to help "discipline" her son when she feels his behavior is inappropriate. Sarah marries a man named Emerson (Jeremy Renner), but abandons him shortly afterward; Emerson responds by molesting Jeremiah, and soon the child is left in the care of his grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), members of a fundamentalist Christian sect which emphasizes child discipline that's strict to the point of abuse. After three years, Sarah returns with a new husband, Kenny (Matt Schulze), and takes Jeremiah (now played by Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse) with her; Kenny spends most of his time on the road as a trucker, and Sarah supports the family at home as a stripper and a prostitute. Sarah also begins dressing her son is girl's clothing, which excites the perverse appetites of Sarah's latest boyfriend, Jackson (Marilyn Manson); she soon leaves Jackson and pairs off with Chester (Jeremy Sisto), a biker with a dangerous way of making a living. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the "Directors Fortnight" series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: I wasn't really sure what you call this theme. But basically, I'm talking about those great films that start out with a simple plan, that slowly and surely gets more and more screwed up as the story goes along. Many time (but not always) these are 'heist gone wrong' films, such as Stanley Kubrick's The Killing. Or John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle Sam Raimi used this in his very aptly titled A Simple Plan. And my favorite filmmakers, the Brothers Coen have used this beautifully in Blood Simple and Fargo. Whatch'all think?? I love watching films like this. They are usually a bit more formulaic than what I typically like but there's just something about it that I really like. More importantly, do you have a name for it?
Body: Surreal, absurd, disturbing, or just plain strange movies. I got this idea from a discussion on IMDB, and I believe some movie website or magazine released a list of the top 20 a while back. In terms of overall weirdness, here it goes: 1. Un Chien Andalou The old Bunuel-Dali collaboration. This had me at the part where the eye gets sliced with a razor-blade. It is quite possibly one of the most disturbing images I have ever seen, and it was made in 1929. It is almost unsettlingly bizarre. This easily takes the cake at a whopping 16 minutes. Watching this film makes you realize how warped the human mind can be, and it's amazing. It is where every David Lynch film is originated, and really where the surrealist genre was created. 2. Eraserhead Not much about this film can be explained that hasn't already been said a million times. It is adequate to say that never has anything like it ever been seen, and it began a long and illustrious career of nightmares and dreamscapes. 3. The City of Lost Children This one is not quite surrealism, more like a plot-driven sci-fi nightmare that more than delivers on the absurdities. However, it also makes up for such strange detachment with likeable characters and genuine horror. 4. Brazil Also one of my favorite movies, it is the crowned jewel of Terry Gilliam's catalogue. The way in which the dream sequences are paralleled by Lowry's just as bizarre existence makes this a masterpiece of surrealism. 5. So many to choose from!!!!!! I can't pick this last one. So, I'll make a list of honorable mentions: Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive, Videodrome (and other Cronenberg), Dead Man, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits (and most other Gilliam), 2001, Donnie Darko, all of Guy Maddin's shorts (some of which aren't in the Spout database......), Pi. Considering this is labeled "Top 5 Weirdest movies", I'm afraid to include 8 1/2, since it's not per se "weird", but more dreamy and surrealist, which does not necessarily mean weird in my book. All of the surrealist films I mentioned were really by-the-book WEIRD. Am I wrong here?
Here's your chance to influence Chris's picks. *I had to laugh when Risselada leeroy711 called Amelie the "gateway drug" of foreign films in this Top 5 Overrated Movies discussion. (Sorry about my flub, leeroy!) UPDATE 11/12: 10 Best Dysfunctional Families by Chris Campbell. I see that a couple of your suggestions showed up! UPDATE 11/13: 10 Most Depressing Holidays Dang, I wanted Earth Day from Bio-Dome to show up! Good work, mercurial. UPDATE 11/14: 10 Most Accessible Foreign Films A lot of you picked films that showed up on Chris's list. Plus, leeroy711 gets quoted! Body: With the last two films I've seen taking place over the course of a single day, I decided to make this week's theme all about those films that aren't hindered by the passing of many months, years or even centuries, but that take place over the course of twenty four hours. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist was a cute little film that had it's characters running around trying to find a secret concert during the wee hours of the night. The passing of Paul Newman and what an incredible actor he was became all that more clear to me after recently watching Cat on a Hot Tin Roof which has a whole slew of emotions bursting out of everyone during the family patriarchs birthday. Both 200 Cigarettes and Four Rooms take place on New Year's Eve and are full of all sorts of hilarious drunken debauchery. Groove, Trick and London are about the bringing together and falling apart of couples over a single day. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is all sorts of crazy packed into one night. And one of my favorites, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with a bats**t crazy Elizabeth Taylor and her verbally abused husband Richard Burton spewing brandy laden zingers at one another during a laborious night of drinking. So time's running out . . . . . . lets get to talking about those films that take place over 24 hours!
Body: Summer Palace (2006) Directed by Lou Ye. Starring Hao Lei, Guo Xiaodong, Hu Ling, Zhang Xianmin. A romance takes place against some of the most turbulent events in recent Chinese history in this epic-scale story from filmmaker Lou Ye. Yu Hong (Hao Lei) is a beautiful seventeen-year-old girl who is soon to leave the small border town where she was born and raised to attend college at Beijing University. Shortly before Yu Hong leaves for school, she gives her virginity to her longtime boyfriend, Xiao, and pledges to remain faithful to him. At Beijing University, Yu Hong makes friends with Li Ti (Hu Ling), another girl dealing with a long distance relationship, and meets Zhou Wei (Guo Xiaodong), a handsome student who soon steals her heart. Yu Hong leaves her relationship with Xiao behind to commit herself to Zhao Wei, and she's swept up by her feelings for him as they embrace the new social and economic freedoms which are being felt on campus. The empowerment felt by the students in Beijing come to a head during a series of demonstrations in Tiananmen Square; the protests have tragic consequences, and the excitement of new possibilities gives way to a feeling of defeat. Yu Hong and Zhou Wei are separated and the heavy hand of the state is brought to bear on the rebellious students. The first Chinese film to feature full-frontal male and female nudity, Yiheyuan (aka Summer Palace) received its world premier as an official selection at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/3530122/9776092 I found this link whilst surfing IMDB...I can't decide what's better, that Charlie Kaufman wrote a new movie or that he's directing said movie. It looks like it's either going to be absolutely amazing, or completely depressing and pretentious. Somehow, Kaufman has managed to balance the two into some amazing movies. Let's see how he does trying his hand at directing. Personal opinion: While I had decidedly mixed feelings upon first viewing, I feel like it's going to be great. One of those existential dilemma-inducing movies...and with some much needed self-deprecating humor. And let's see if anyone can get a dictionary-type pronunciation on here, because I have no idea how the hell I'm supposed to say this. I've just been saying Schenectady, but that's adding like 10 consonants. Ponder.
Body: This is sort of a selfish thread, but I figured it might be useful to anyone's who trying to get into the genre. As for me, I have seen Crouching Tiger, House of Flying Daggers, and several Jet Li and Jackie Chan movies on late night cable. I feel as though that is a pretty good start, but I know that's just the tip of the iceberg. What are the next steps? What are the best ones? What are the most acclaimed ones? Discuss...
Body: Seriously, has anyone seen this movie yet? It's actually a pretty new movie. I have to say that I thought it was going to be a horribly low budget yawner...but it wasn't. It was actually pretty good, I was really shocked. Robert Englund also starred in it. It was a little gorey and of course from the Title I am sure that you know there is plenty of high-end stripper nudity, but it was really funny and well made. I don't know if someone else has seen it and wants to disagree but I liked it.
Body: I've been getting the newsletter for a few months now, and I'm usually perplexed by some of the cartoons. Last month said something about "Maxing it out", and now several films by Max Ophuls are planned for release. This months says: "Baby it's cold outside" with some small house-looking thing? I figured these cartoons merit discussion, and for the most part (from what I've seen) they go completely beyond me.
Body: From the Criterion FAQ page: How does Criterion decide which films receive the “Criterion Treatment”? We aim to reflect the breadth of filmed expression. We try not to be restrictive or snobby about what kinds of films are appropriate. An auteur classic, a Hollywood blockbuster, and an independent B horror film each has to be taken on its own terms. All we ask is that each film in the collection be an exemplary film of its kind. Of course we can’t just pick movies and put them out. The process of getting the rights to release a film can take years. Even if we want a film, we can’t work on it unless the film’s owners grant us the rights. Why so few films from South Asia or China?”—and we’re continually working to fill those gaps. So, we've got the discussion of which films we think should get the treatment. Are there any films you guys think will get the treatment. It also seems that Criterion releases titles that typically don't allready have a "special" or "collectors" edition released by their studios. This makes sense, I'm sure MGM or Artisan is going to much more reluctant to grant Criterion the rights to release a copy that's going to be better than the one they just released. Some I think may be seen someday. Miller's Crossing - I think there is a Coen Brother box set coming out that does not include this one. And I just think this one has a lot of potential for extra features and great artwork. Pi - This is an indy classic that doesn't really have a great release 1984 - To the best of my knowledge, there is still no dvd release availiable for this movie.
You're Gonna Miss Me documents the life of Rory Erickson, the man who fronted the popular band 13th Floor Elevators, whose biggest hit provides the title for the movie. Although Erickson and company are often credited as being among the forbearers of psychedelic inspired acid rock, Erickson battled serious drug problems and mental illness throughout much of his life. Clips of the band performing their heyday are presented alongside the older Erickson, holed up in his apartment listening obsessively to multiple radios and televisions. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
Starring Vania Vilers, Aurélien Recoing, Pascal Bongard, Fred Ulysse, Nicolas Pignon, Augustin Legrand, Philippe Passon, George Babluani, Pascal Bougard. An aimless 20-year-old with a penchant for following the rules receives a mysterious set of instructions that lead him down a path from which he may never return in director Géla Babluani's tense tale of death and chance. Sébastien has come into possession of a train ticket and a mysterious set of instructions. Though he is unsure of exactly what fate awaits him when he arrives at his destination, one thing is certain: these items were most certainly not meant for him. Bored by his uneventful existence and hungering for something new, Sébastien boards the outbound train and takes his first bold steps into an unknown future. But the world can be a cruel and unforgiving place filled with unfeeling men to whom human life means little more than a lost wager, and if Sébastien is to make it through his harrowing journey alive he must keep his wits about him and pray that luck is on his side. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body: 2. The Stand -- haven't seen it in a decade, but it's stuck with me. Anyone seen it lately? Does it hold up? I'm almost afraid to find out. 1. The Devil's Advocate -- over-the-top at times, but it boasts some scenes of tremendous insight, and maybe the best role Keanu's ever had. Weird, I thought I could come up with more good films, but I'm mainly thinking of disappointing movies: End of Days, Constantine, and I don't know if the Devil shows up in Dogma because I found it so boring I couldn't make it past the first twenty minutes. I haven't seen Pick of Destiny yet. I will never watch Little Nicky.
Body: What are your favorite black and white films made after a time when color had become the norm? Since I'm not sure exactly when that was (that could be an interesting thing to discuss here as well), I'm going to say 1970. I can actually think of a lot more than 5, so I'm going to say more than that, but I think that's fair and allowable. 1. I'm clumping all of Jim Jarmusch's B&W films together, which is nearly half of them I think: Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Dead Man, Coffee and Cigarettes. 2. The Man Who Wasn't There. The Coen brothers' tribute to film noir. 3. The Elephant Man. My favorite Lynch film (even though I've only seen three). 4. Ed Wood. It HAD to be in B&W. 5. OK, I can't pick 5, so these all tie for 5th. Clerks, Pi, Young Frankenstein, Raging Bull, Following, Good Night, and Good Luck. Ok, I have a few more I'd like to mention, but I'll hold off for some discussion. There are several that I'm expecting a lot of people to list.
Body: Something that seems to happen more and more these days are movies in which people see them, leave the theater going "Huh," or "Umm," or "That was interesting," and then go home and spend hours reading up on the motivation behind the film and what exactly the filmmakers were trying to convey with it. I'm torn on this (shouldn't a good film need no explanation?) but acknowledge that I am myself guilty of this. Here we go:1.) Mulholland Drive - Not that I was completely oblivious to most of the films goings-ons (this undoubtedly being what everyone says when justifying their love for it), I was just so in awe of it all that I wanted to find out what the film was born out of (it was originally going to be a television show that never got anywhere so Lynch turned it into a film).2.) The Hours - Having just read Mrs. Dalloway the year before and loving it, I felt inclined to research how much of the film was actually based on Virginia Woolfs life and how much was just exaggerated.3.) Waking Life - Basically self-explanatory, the plethora of philosophical ideas discussed throughout the film was just too much of an overload for my tiny head that I needed some clarity afterwards.4.) I Heart Huckabees - Again, being a novice of existential theories, I needed some explanation.5.) Primer - Mathematics + Physics + Me = Incompatible. Needed to buff up on most of the concepts involved and pay extra special attention the next time I watched it.
