Body: It is time. Several people have asked me to share my true life paranormal experiences over the last couple of years. I have a few experiences to share so this might take some time... This discussion is open for all of you to contribute so if you have had a paranormal or "horror movie" situation happen to you I would like to hear about it! This does not have to be a ghost story! It can be an encounter with a Monster like Bigfoot or The Lochness Monster or a giant Black Leopard or with a psychopathic killer like Henry Lee Lucas or Jack the Ripper... Mine is a ghost story and I will share it with you now... Ms. June, Froggybabe, Robert, Chris, Rizzo, Puhnner and anybody else who is curious, this is for you... (my memory of exact dates or timeline might be a little fucked up due to several years of drug and alcohol abuse) ... In the early 1980's my family moved into a large house in the Lake Arbor community in northern Arvada Colorado. I moved in with them on the condition that I would rent the entire basement for $200 per month. The basement was divided lengthwise into two rooms. One room was my bedroom that had enough room for not only my bed but a couch and chairs and a table and a huge walk-in closet and a full size refrigerator/freezer AND my own bathroom! The other room was a large finnished living-room type room with a couple of big couches and chairs and a fireplace... I slept alone in this basement for more than a year with SOMETHING that was not of this world. My first encounter with this entity was in the form of a dream... or rather a nightmare. I had the scariest dream of my life about a tall guy with dark curly hair and thick black-rimmed glasses who was attacking me in that very house and wanted only to kill me. The next morning I told my Mom that I had just had the scariest dream of my life and she said "Stop! You are giving me goosebumps!" and I said "Why?" and she said because she had had the exact same dream! It was not long afterward when I saw the exact same guy standing in the middle of my bedroom when I was wide awake! I stood face to face with this "spook" not more than three feet away one night and I am convinced that I personally met a Demon... More to come... you asked for it... < GOR >
Body: I just wanted to let you know that I am taking two different classes in October and half of November. One is called Schlock Cinema which is going back to watch B rated movies and discussing what was happening at that time in history for the movie to be made. The other class I am taking is American Horror Movie and how it corrilates to history. So I will be watching movies and also learning something on every Tuesday and Thursday night next month and part of November. Yes, I really didn't think it through when I signed up for both classes, but it just sounded like something I would really like, 2 times a week might be a little much, though. I will try to post what I watch and what I learned, someone might find it interesting.
Body: Just that. In horror-dom, there seems to be this mandatory bravura, this stolid attitude of "that wasn't scary" or "that was lame." I believe, however, if you can find the chinks in this armor, you can pry the plates apart and find what really gets beneath someone's skin, what really scares them. Case in point: in Saw II, one of the most squirm-inducing sequences for a lot of viewers, despite the brutal violence and gushing gore was the infamous needle pit that Xavier so courteously treated Amanda to. A lot of people simply were taken to the edge by that scene, deeply affected. I, on the other hand, didn't bat an eyelash. Now, I get through horror in part because I know it's not real (save those tasteless Italians...) and that, moreover, I know how they do it. There is one thing - only one - that puts me in my place and makes me realize I'm not invulnerable to the horrors of Horror. An instance in Dead Men Walking speaks to this end and in fact lays out my feelings perfectly while also serving as a gruesome example:0:35:40. It’s time I come clean about something here: I can take just about bloody (ahem) anything in horror films, but I’ll have to face that when it comes to crap being puked up, thrown up, chucked up, what have you, my stomach starts to loosen and it takes will power to keep it down. Mostly I’m O.K., but if I already am sick (with flu, not a biotoxin) or I’ve just eaten a big meal, the case becomes stronger to stop from hurling myself. Now, on with the gore. The other two of the infected trio earlier barf blood all over their escorts while a third (and this is where it gets really disgusting) is foaming up with a pinkish mixture of some unholy slime that oozes down his face like lava from a science fair volcano. Eventually, everybody in the mess hall, as it were, is puking blood all over everyone else, the entire affair one absolutely stomach-turning episode of ungodly sickness. SR: SSSSS I have always been gastrointestinally uneasy and when I see notable scenes like the one I'm thinking about as the subject of this particular post, it leaves me a bit uneasy. It is in City of Living Dead and it is a spot that seared itself in my memory forever. Giallo and general Italian horror fans, based on what I've already said, will know exactly what it is, but for everyone's edification (or vile enjoyment) I'll reproduce here how I said it on my site:“THE BODY PURGING” 0:31:30. A girl’s eyes start to bleed…then it gets really sick. She starts to foam atthe mouth as if rabid, the foam quickly turning red and then into strange things: intestines – yards and yards of them – and then organs of several shapes, sizes and colors. In time, the girl vomits up her innards while the specter of the suicidal priest stares her down. After the body purging, a hand reaches into the boy’s hair and grabs out a chunk of his brains, leaving a grapefruit-sized hole. SR: ããããã That left me feeling ill, like I might be sick myself. That, I must say, is rare. In fact, it never happens. Nothing I have ever seen that does not involve projectile or otherwise unusual puking has prompted a physical reponse like this. A third and final moment in this vein (ahem) in my grim horror-watching career comes from Wishmaster 3:0:54:12. Don’t eat prior to watching this scene, I really mean it. Anne befriends the Djinn, tragically unaware of course of who he really is. She wished earlier to lose some weight. If you know anything about the series, it’s that the Djinn always grants wishes, but never in the manners intended. Anne indeed loses weight, a la City of the Living Dead. Her nose and areas around her mouth start to bleed, events that the Djinn describes as “a little liposuction.” As she starts to spit up a liquid, molten mixture of fat and blood, the Djinn goes on about how she always considered her stomach a problem area. In a few seconds that too is on the floor and the waxy substance she’d been spitting up for a while continues. As Diana steadfastly refuses to make her wishes, aware of the repercussions if she did, Anne continues to waste away, her entire body’s worth of fat shriveling up, her skin taking on a gruesome new complexion. Eventually the Djinn talks her into wishing for him to relieve her of the pain, naturally intending for the process to be reversed. Instantly, however, all her joints go limp and she’s D.O.A. SR: SSSSS So, now that I've come clean about what grosses me out, how 'bout you?
Body: Has anyone seen the trailer for this? You know I'm not much for remakes but this actually looks pretty fun because they've made it in 3D. I really liked the original movie, it's not very well known but it was pretty good. Anyone have any opinion on the old movie or the new one?
Body: I've already said that I hated The Midnight Meat Train. But there are some movies that I don't hate. Trust me. If you have read some of past discussions you will find that I LOVE John Carpenter's The Thing starring the drool-tastic Kurt Russell. However, now I'm going to talk about some movies I've seen that were really dumb. And some other previews that just looked dumb. Here we go. I recently watched the Day of the Dead remake. Very disappointing, but quirky at the same time. Ving Rhames returns as Captain Rhodes (sound familiar?), a military dude who has no relationship to Rhames' character in the Dawn of the Dead remake. SPOILERS AHEAD. He get his face eaten, as well as the other black kid, Nick Cannon, who, by the way, is freaking married to freaking Mariah Carey for crap's sake. But he doesn't get eaten 'til the end or so. I was sad that he got eaten but I got over it. Mina Suvari, the hot blonde from American Beauty, is the main character and she has a stupid horny brother who is worthless but lives. Damn the luck. Stark Sands, some guy I don't know but who is a big nerdy Private and kinda cute, gets bitten and turns into a horny, lusting-for-the-main-character zombie. Named Bud. Oh the agony. The other thing is that the zombies were fast. Again. And one crawls across a wall and a ceiling to get to some poor nurse. Just not the way a zombie is supposed to move. I can understand the fastness but they're not geckos. So, I didn't like it. It sucked. And the ending was gay. Another movie that just looks gay is Orphan. It seems to be quite similar to The Good Son which I thought was pretty okay. But, I've already seen it so why should I see Orphan? I don't know, but I sure won't if I can help it. Sorry for the rambling. What do you all think of the movies I've mentioned or any movie for that matter? Speak up!
Body: Well fellow Spouters, it's been ages and ages since I posted on this site but by golly I missed it. And I'm bored. So I got that going for me, too. Anywho, if you want to know where I've been, just send me a message. But I will not bore you with the details on this particular post. I've seen a few movies lately, which were pretty gay (I use that word in reference to that word "stupid..." If you have a problem with it, I wouldn't suggest telling me or I will bite your face off) including a film based on a story by one of my very favorite authors. The movie I am referring to is Midnight Meat Train (I think the "Link a Movie" deally is not working right now. Damn) and it was horribletastic with holes everywhere and a very unsexy and disturbing sex scene that made me want to ralph. Nothing was really explained and I can't remember if I'm supposed to be pissed off or not because I can't remember the short story very well so I will have to be reading that some time soon. On another note, welcome to everyone who has joined since my hiatus and I hope things will be fun fun fun for the time I decide to keep posting. Cheers!
Body: Hi horror group, I caught The Collector last night; I was shocked to have mostly really, really liked it. Apparently it was conceived as a Saw prequel, and the advertising pushes the writers' involvement in Saws 4-6. They did a decent enough job turning it into something different enough to stand on it's own. It spends enough time developing charcters and plot to get the viewer invested in the events, and sets everything within the film up well. I don't like the "torture porn" label, but since it seems to have taken, I'll use it here. If you've not been a fan of the genre, Collector will definitely not be for you; if you've come to at least be able to tolerate it, give this one a shot. I'll also note that Gary Tunnicliffe of some (all?) of the Hellraiser series does effects here, and that you can tell; I don't know if he designed the villain, but one or two set-ups & some torture gore are evocative of that work.
Body: I had the great opportunity while in Scotland this last month to check out "Pontypool" at the Edinburgh film festival. I know this movie only just opened in the states, and I'm pretty sure its release is fairly limited, but I wanted to know if anyone had seen this yet, or wants to, or has any thoughts about it. I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of this movie and think everyone should go check it out. I think it's a really refreshing take on the conventions of the zombie genre, and probably my favorite new zombie movie (that I've seen) since "28 Days Later." Here's a link to the trailer
Body: In Seattle this weekend there is going to be a zombie walk where they are trying to get as many people as possible to break the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest zombie walk ever. I will not be a zombie, my friends think I am strange enough, but I will be doing something fun. On Friday night, the Fremont outdoor movies here in Seattle, is going to be showing Shaun of the Dead and having a best zombie costume contest. So this should be really fun! Just wondering if any other towns had things like this? I know around Halloween it is really a zombie fest. I've also heard that with Michael Jackson's death, there are places that are doing a "Thriller" walk and dance. Anything else happening or will happen one day in your area?
Body: There are times I just can't wait to see the Trailers for new movies coming out that I have been dying to see. There are also times that I get so mad that these people who make the trailers give WAY too much of the movie away, including the endings. Now this really isn't a SPOILER because it was on the trailer but when I watched the trailer for Quarantine, I knew exactly what was going to happen...when you see the lead actress being pulled extremely fast backwards in the dark...you know it's not going to end well. Anyway, what are some trailers that you have seen that just gave away TOO much information. If you are going to reveal endings of movies, make sure you put a spoiler alert before it just in case someone hasn't seen it yet.
Body: THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS SO IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IT, YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ THIS: Okay, I saw Drag me to Hell a couple of weeks ago and thought it was a very fun movie. It was extremely predictable in some parts but it was highly entertaining. There were some incredibly gross parts but when it did get really disgusting it was also really funny and just made me laugh. Like the old lady when she lost her teeth and started trying to gum the young woman to death, or all the saliva everywhere. I just started cracking up. I did guess the ending pretty early though but other than that, it was a very good date movie. So, has anyone else seen this movie? What did you think? June
Body: We've discussed Asain horror (or as some of you think, the lack thereof...lol) and Italian horror and directors - but overall what are some of your absolute favorite Foreign horror movies. I don't care for dubbing but a friend of mine can't watch any movie while reading subtitles because she says it distracts her from the movie, but I like to hear how it's suppose to sound and don't mind subtitles. Anyway, there are a LOT of great spooky movies from all over the world out there. One of my favorites is from Mexico, The Devils Backbone...it moved a little slow, but it was really good. I also loved Brotherhood of the Wolf, I don't know if I really consider that a horror movie but my friend calls it one. It was more of an action film to me, but it was really great. What are some of your favorites?
Body: Hi guys, i'm looking for a horro movie from late 80's - 90's i guess. I've seen it on TV like 10 years ago, but i didn't got it from the begining. The movie starts with a daughter (i think) comming home to a little town where is greeted by her mother, the go by car to the town but they can see anyone. After they go looking through houses they see that almost everybody is dead or dissaperead or something. But they find some people and go hide at the police hq or something like that. I can't remember any more details about that part, but afterwards it's revealed that an entity live under the city, or something like that, and they wait for a SWAT team, and near the end all the people appear in the center of the town. Sorry for the spelling mistake and for the writing style. So anybody have a clue? i really really apreciate it:)
Body: Gor, I was wondering if you've ever seen the old silent French film version of The Fall of the House of Usher. Just saw this one and it has a lot of creepy elements. The beginning with the guy looking for a coachman to take him up to the house and everyone being freaked out reminds me of many scenes from the beginning of Dracula movies. Also, I looked through past discussions and didn't see any that seemed to be specifically devoted to real old classic B&W horror from the silent or early sound days. What are some lesser known but great horror movies from that era?
Body: Anyone check out this week's FilmCouch podcast? Kevin and Adam talk about My Bloody Valentine 3D, which leads into what I thought was a great discussion about what truly makes a horror film great, and how gimmicks don't necessarily equal great filmmaking (though directors often seem to think they do--see our other discussion here). Bonus: they give a great quick history of 3D film--including the highest grossing 3D film ever, a crappy 70's soft-core porn. Kevin and Adam brought up The Descent and The Orphanage as great examples of what a horror film *can* be. I really liked their perspective on horror films and the horror genre, and the direction filmmaking seems to have taken towards gimmicks. "How do you get through to somebody who's seen a hundred horror movies? And yours has nothing to offer them." -FilmCouch #105 What do you guys think?
Body: Just saw that The Uninvited is coming out soon. I guess this is another adaptation by the people who brought Ringu over as The Ring, so I am a bit curious to see this as I still have PRTSS (post Ring traumatic stress syndrome). It was originally based on the hit Japanese Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters (and was to be released in the US under the same title, but was changed last minute). The preview really looks genuinely creepy, and coming from a Japanese Korean film I'm pretty sure it won't disappoint, given the Japanese Korean track record for ultra-creepy movies. Has anyone heard anything about this one?
Has anyone heard anything about this one?</spout:lastpostby><spout:postdate>1/26/2009 10:59:48 AM</spout:postdate><spout:body>Just saw that The Uninvited is coming out soon. I guess this is another adaptation by the people who brought Ringu over as The Ring, so I am a bit curious to see this as I still have PRTSS (post Ring traumatic stress syndrome). Body: I know there are a lot of horror movies out there that almost go up to Part 26 or so...but what are some of your favorites? AND if they are in a series what are your favorites within that series? There are a LOT of obvious ones, but also try to think of the ones that aren't so popular...There is one group of movies, I think they only go up to Part 4, but they are called Subspecies, they are low budget but they are really good and creepy about good vampires and bad vampires. There is also Night of the Demons 1 and 2, and 3, I can't remember if they go up in further. I also really enjoy all the Wishmaster Movies. Which number is it that has Robert Englund in it, that was one of my favorites...What are some of yours?
Body: Has anyone watched these short films? It is On Demand on cable and on www.fearnet.com - they are one hour horror films by different directors (kind of like Masters of Horror). Anyway, they have a really good one called New Years Day - I watched it a few times and kept catching different things. It's basically about a zombie apocalypse seen through the eyes of a woman that partied way too hard on New Year's Eve. It was really cool along with a lot of the other episodes. Has anyone else seen it?
Body: Okay, I found the PERFECT movie for this discussion. It is a 1961 (Netflix says 1961 but Spout says 1963) movie called Blood Feast. I have never seen such bad makeup (especially on the"old" man - spray on gray hair and gray eyebrows), bad acting, bad gore scenes, cheesey clothes and props. The lead actress is really beautiful but she couldn't act her way out of a paperbag (I kept thinking of the phrase casting couch for this girl). I think the term for this movie is sexploitation although they really didn't show any nudity (sorry Doc) but it had a lot of beautiful young women being (badly) tortured and mutilated. It is only a little over an hour but well worth watching. Just soak up the badness and all the really bad fake blood and body parts. Has anyone seen this movie? What are some other absolutely HORRIBLE movies that you watch and just say, oh my god, that was GREAT!
Body: Hey, everyone! I'm wondering if any of you folks would be willing to help me out with a presentation I'm doing for my Spanish class. I'm trying to compare Spanish horror films and American horror films with respect to ghosts, or general creepy thrills. For my Spanish film, I'm watching "The Devil's Backbone." I'm not sure about the American film, but I'm thinking "Poltergeist," because I'd like to stick with movies that have similar subject matter (in this case, ghosts). So far my thinking is that Spanish horror films, particularly "haunting" movies, like Del Toro's film, or "The Orphanage" have more to do with the scarier aspects human nature than American horror films, which seem to deal chiefly with special effects and scaring the bejeezus out of you. Am I on the right track? Are there other aspects I should be examining? A different American ghost/haunting-related film I should be checking out? Sorry this post is so long...but I don't think there was any way I could make it short. Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated! iGracias!
