Group Name: Independent Features
Group Description:
"Our vision was to create a festival whereby filmmakers of all walks of life could submit their feature films to the festival and be judged by an international jury of their peers via a web-based competition" -Philip J. Nelson, President of Independent Features

Independent Features was created by two independent filmmakers who learned first hand how hard it is to find an independent film an audience. After completing their first independent feature in March of 2001, they ran into the same predicament most independent filmmakers find themselves in. They found it very hard to find their film an audience. After years of working outside of the film industry they talked about giving it another shot, they always loved independent film. Instead of producing another film they decided to go another direction, they created a platform that would give independent filmmakers a global audience. Independent Features pioneered the first film festival in which film selection is done ONLINE via a web-based competition. The 2008 competition will take place through June 30th with the top 21 films receiving an invitation to the Independent Features Film Festival. The festival will take place July 25-27 at the acclaimed Tribeca Cinemas in Lower Manhattan.

Group Name: Disability On Film - Discuss depictions of disability on film
Group Description:
Film lovers often observe ... and sometimes complain ... that high-profile movies that depict people with disabilities get lots of mainstream praise and awards because the films tug at peoples' heartstrings. It's also been observed that depicting a disabled person is an "easy" way for actors to get credit for what is seen as "difficult" portrayals. Yet, this can also be viewed cynically as cheap "stunt acting".

But, what does cinema throughout history say about the experience of living with disabilities? What constitutes a "positive" portrayal vs. a "negative" one?

Group Name: Game Over The Group - A place to discuss first time filmmakers ups and downs...
Group Description:
My name is Larry Carrell and I am a partner in Ungowa Films and the writer, co-director, and Bruce of our 2008 feature Game Over The Secret Life of Game Store Clerks. I am starting this group to have a place to invite people to discuss my film, and keep people posted as things progress.

I would also like to invite other new filmmakers to share their adventure hardships and heartaches here. One thing we all share is a passion and with that fire comes a lot of drama. Some days good some days bad. Blow off some steam here friends, I can definetly relate.

I look forward to talking to you all!

Thanks,

Body: It is time. Several people have asked me to share my true life paranormal experiences over the last couple of years. I have a few experiences to share so this might take some time... This discussion is open for all of you to contribute so if you have had a paranormal or "horror movie" situation happen to you I would like to hear about it! This does not have to be a ghost story! It can be an encounter with a Monster like Bigfoot or The Lochness Monster or a giant Black Leopard or with a psychopathic killer like Henry Lee Lucas or Jack the Ripper... Mine is a ghost story and I will share it with you now... Ms. June, Froggybabe, Robert, Chris, Rizzo, Puhnner and anybody else who is curious, this is for you... (my memory of exact dates or timeline might be a little fucked up due to several years of drug and alcohol abuse) ... In the early 1980's my family moved into a large house in the Lake Arbor community in northern Arvada Colorado. I moved in with them on the condition that I would rent the entire basement for $200 per month. The basement was divided lengthwise into two rooms. One room was my bedroom that had enough room for not only my bed but a couch and chairs and a table and a huge walk-in closet and a full size refrigerator/freezer AND my own bathroom! The other room was a large finnished living-room type room with a couple of big couches and chairs and a fireplace... I slept alone in this basement for more than a year with SOMETHING that was not of this world. My first encounter with this entity was in the form of a dream... or rather a nightmare. I had the scariest dream of my life about a tall guy with dark curly hair and thick black-rimmed glasses who was attacking me in that very house and wanted only to kill me. The next morning I told my Mom that I had just had the scariest dream of my life and she said "Stop! You are giving me goosebumps!" and I said "Why?" and she said because she had had the exact same dream! It was not long afterward when I saw the exact same guy standing in the middle of my bedroom when I was wide awake! I stood face to face with this "spook" not more than three feet away one night and I am convinced that I personally met a Demon... More to come... you asked for it... < GOR >
More to come... you asked for it... < GOR > </spout:body>

Body: This one is just too obvious. I had to look through our previous discussions to make sure we hadn't done this one. I was pretty surprised to find out that we haven't touched it yet. I love time travel movies. It has the ability to be one of the most complicated thematic elements, but when done well, it can completely suck you in.. I think Primer is my favorite example of an intelligent film with a complex plot. 12 Monkeys is just one of the coolest flicks ever. I absolutely love the whole 'science is the newest religion' aspect. I also thought The Jacket was pretty good. That's about all I've got for now. I'm really more interested in getting some recomendations. So, let's hear it. San Dimas High School Football RULES!!!!!!!!
Body: I'm going to be starting this marathon next Monday and I'll be giving each film a week. I've only seen one Haneke film thus far (Funny Games) and I loved it. I know some of his other stuff has received a considerable amount of praise so I've been wanting to catch up with more of it. He also just won the Palm D'Or at Cannes for his newest film, The White Ribbon. So I've picked 4 films that are very easy to get. All are available from Netflix and/or Blockbuster.com. So let's get started. July 27th - August 2nd : 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance August 3rd - August 9th : Funny Games August 10th - August 16th : The Piano Teacher August 17th - August 23rd : Cache Well there you have it. Four films and about a month to get to know Michael Haneke. So fire up your queue, and let's check these out. * I'm not sure how much it actually matters whether or not you follow the schedule, but you know.... whatever..
Body: Alright, so let's let this thread be used as sort of a "how to" for starting and organizing a marathon. That being said, I really don't know what I'm doing so any feedback and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Anyway, I do think I've got some pretty good ideas so let's start with those, shall we. First off, I think it would be a good idea to keep the discussion of the films of your marathon confined to one thread. This will help keep the group more organized. Announce and schedule your marathon. I will probably be announcing the schedule for my first marathon in a day or two. It will likely start about a week after the announcement. This will give whomever would like to follow a chance to add the films to thier netflix or blockbuster.com queue. I also think that it would probably work best if you picked around 3-5 films for the marathon and gave about a week per each film. Maybe something a little like this...................................... __________________________________________________________ EXAMPLE __________________________________________________________ Sample Woody Allen Marathon: Annie Hall - April 1-6 Manhattan - April 7-13 Deconstructing Harry - April 14-20 Sweet and Lowdown - April 21-27 __________________________________________________________ Then in the following weeks, you could use the discussion thread to start conversating about the particular films. Consider what you're asking people to watch. It would be a good idea to check the film's availiablity on netflix and blockbuster before adding it to the marathon. Anyway, I think this is worth a try. I would really like this to get some response. This is a great way for me and anyone else to get exposed to some more films. I really love watching films with friends and since most of my fellow cinefile friends live thousands of miles away from me, this seems to be the best way to get a group of people watching the same thing at the same time and discussing it while its still fresh in thier mind. That's all I've got for now. Peace and Love, Emery
Body: "I like thinking about the red dress and the television and you and your father. Now when I get the sun, I smile." - Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) from Requiem for a Dream. So, this week I'd like to talk about television in the movies. There is actually a lot to choose from. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - George Clooney directed Charlie Kaufman's adaptation of Chuck Barris' (ehem) autobiography.... How could you go wrong? I remember when the book came out. I read some excerpts from it and thought how crazy it could be if the right people got involved to make the film. Audition - Lest we forget, the central plot of this film is about an audition for a television show. I think I would have completely fallen in love with this Takashi Miike film had I come into it knowing a lot less about it and Miike's reputation. Quiz Show - I like to mention this film about as much as I can. I think it's Redford's most underrated film and it's my personal favorite. It's about a scandal involving a game show but it was all of the intellectual banter scenes between Ralph Fiennes and Rob Morrow made this film so memorable. Also, John Turturro's performance was brilliant. Well folks, that's all I got for the moment. As I said before, there are a ton of films about television. So let's here about them.
</spout:body>

Body: Please reference this thread for the rules of this group. I've been reading the novel "A Confederacy of Dunces" and have heard the stories about all the different people who have been involved in trying to put a production together at different times over the past 30 years. The fact that John Belushi, John Candy, and Chris Farley had all been cast for the role at some point and then died created a legend of the Confederacy Curse. However you must also consider they were all probably chosen because they were obese commedians, and obeseity in itself is probably more of a curse and health issue in this situation. I'm not sure if I could picture any of them in the role of Ignatius though. I think it will take some very special casting to discover the right person for such a specific character. Anyways, one of the possible productions of this film is mentioned in a list from the wonderful book 10 Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists. And thus this poll: Please vote only once in each poll.
Body: While I was going through the films that premiered at Sundance I noticed a number of documentaries that really caught my attention. Here are the lists: Spectrum 2009: Documentary Spotlight World Cinema Documentary Competition 2009 U.S. Documentary Competition 2009 I wanted to know what everyone's top 5 picks would be out of all of these. I know you haven't watched them yet, but I would encourage you to read the synopsis (If we don't have one check sundance's site), and to watch the trailer if there is one. The films you pick would be ones you want to see, and perhaps think could win awards of some kind. Thanks, Ryan
Body: I have 35 of these TOO!!! Uncounted From the back of the cover: Uncounted is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 and now looms as an unbridled threat to elections in 2008 and beyond. The controversial feature-length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Beyond increasing the public's awareness, UNCOUNTED inspires greater citizen involvement in fixing a broken electoral system. As we approach the decisive election of 2008, UNCOUNTED will change how you feel about the way votes are counted in America. Sounds exciting...
Body: Yet another theme that I've been wanting to do for a while now. I'd like to talk this week about expressionistic film. I think maybe we should try to define it first. I'm probably not the best person for this, I think you could pretty accurately call expressionism an art movement, started in Germany in the early 20th century in which reality (the world) is distorted in order to reflect emotion..... Still with me? Its pretty easy to understand once examples are used so let's start that. As I said earlier, this art form was started in Germany so naturally, early German films are great examples. Think of the buildings and backdrops of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis. In the former, the buildings were all standing twisted and sideways to display a chaotic and unnerving feel. While in the ladder, the city was very much larger than life and completely oppressive. Later, many German directors like Billy Wilder and Fritz Lang moved to the states and continued their expressionistic style in the film noir vein with films like Double Indemnity and The Big Heat respectively. Film noir is really defined as an expressionistic film movement as a whole. Filmmakers used smoke and fog in the shots to lend more of an unsettling and suspicious feel to the films. ** from Double Indemnity - notice venetian blind shadow give the "behind bars" look ** Director Tim Burton has somewhat rehashed and revamped expressionism in modern films. His sets for Gotham in Batman and Batman Returns are throwbacks to the earlier looks of the German films. Edward Scissorhands' costume and set are both very exaggerated in their look to add a stark contrast to the character backdrop relationship. There is one more film I'd like to mention that fits this catagory to a T. But, I will wait until later in the hopes that someone else mentions it first. I will only say that its a film that came out within the past 15 years and its an obvious homage to one of the early German films. I really would like to see someone else mention it before I do. So there you have it. I absolutely love this theme and I hope I've given y'all something at least to think about.
Body: I recently was given Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo by a friend (on DVD no less--its a wonder whats available on DVD now...) and I have to say, it definitely holds its own in the Worst Movie Ever category. As far as dance films go, I'd almost wager this is #1 since it sort of set a precedent for the genre, but I'm curious to know what other crappy ones are out there? Oh and definitely take the time to watch the clip below. It sums up the whole film pretty well.
Body: Sorry for the late entry y'all. I've been working out of town a lot lately and my hotel's internet wasn't working very well. Thus spawning a great......well, adequate idea for this week's theme. How about all those films that take place in or around a hotels, motels, inns, b&b's or lodges. Psycho scared the hell out of people when it came out. Barton Fink and Dirty Pretty Things are a couple of my faves that I think everyone should take a gander at. The hotel in Barton Fink is pretty much a character itself. There's actually quite a few right off the top of my head, but I'll check in with y'all later....... Enjoy your stay.
Body: After I finished season 3 of Heroes I resolved to never watch another episode of that show ever again. I can't believe people still watch it. I just read an article at i09 that basically ridiculed the most recent episode. If you haven't watched it yet beware of spoilers in the article. Needless to say Nathan and the gang sound just as confused and worthless as they always have. It's great to see that the writers for that show don't know how to write their way out of the paper box that is Heroes. So do you still watch? Tell me why.
Body: Call them what you will: hero support, tag-a-longs, sniveling assistants; sidekicks are an essential archetype throughout the literary and filmic representations of heroes over the course of our history. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Inspector Gadget and Penny, Batman and Robin, sidekicks come in all shapes and sizes. The little blue fish that wouldn't shut up, Cory from Finding Nemo definitely ranks rather high on my list of sidekicks. Straddling the line between ultra-lovable and incredibly annoying, Cory helped catapult Finding Nemo onto countless top ten lists the year it was released. If there is one thing that made Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull not work for me was the replacement of the incredible Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom with the whiny wannabe Mutt. With his constant thieving, lightning fast comebacks and general flare for equaling Indiana Jones screen presence, Short Round deserves a top spot on my list. And lastly Mini-Me. Oh, Mini-Me, so adorable yet so menacing. With his obscene gestures and ability to say so much without saying anything at all, Mini-Me from Austin Powers is truly an indelible sidekick that will not be soon forgotten. So this week, let's give it up for the sidekicks!
Actually, probably not until 2010 at the earliest, but this was the first news I heard about this project and thought it was really amusing to imagine. http://indiefilm.movies.yahoo.com/article-9-/ Hopefully that link comes up properly, but basically there will be a Three Stooges movie written and directed by the Farrelly brothers with Jim Carrey as Curly, Sean Penn as Larry, and possibly Benicio del Toro as Moe. That would be wild!
Body: I can't get this short little montage out of my head, but I can't remember what movie it's from. There's a voice over narration talking about a character in the movie. It's talking about how he had a relative who died in every major American war, and there's a quick montage of each of his relatives being shot and killed in different era war uniforms. I'm not even sure if this was a movie I liked, but I know I've seen it. What is it???
Body: I got an amusing message from a new member. They're making a CIA-themed training video, and searching for specific scenes they could use to communicate the ideas below. At first this reminded me of when my sisters asked me for help on their homework, and then I thought...it is, it's just like when my sisters asked me for help on their homework. But then I thought, I might be able to help this person make an un-boring corporate video! So here's what I came up with for these concepts. Are there any scenes you can think of? Plan strategically -- Utilize technology effectively -- Doesn't Mission Impossible I have an extended sequence where Tom Cruise uses all kinds of tools, ends up hanging from a wire, and steals a computer chip or something? Drive performance -- Accountability & Dependability -- For a counter-example, how about any of the scenes in Burn After Reading where an agent gives reports to J.K. Simmons? Communicate effectively -- Develop people -- I'm guessing this has to do with taking some time to guide or mentor a younger person. Are there any scenes like this between Sean Connery and his right hand man in Hunt for Red October? Lead strategically -- I'm thinking of the scene in Bourne Ultimatum where Matt Damon is helping the reporter (Paddy Considine) stay unseen by CIA agents. PS -- the person listed the kind of movies they had in mind: The Recruit, Mission Impossible 1-3, The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum, Enemy of the State, The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games.
Body: Better late than never right? This week is all about the ancient Japaneese art of Karaoke. It seems like I've been seeing this more often than usual lately. There's of course the great scene with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation. I loved her in the pink wig. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Polish Brothers used this as a theme in Jackpot. It's about a guy traveling the country, entering as many Karaoke contests as he can. He does the same song every time, George Jones' 'The Grand Tour' I've also been watching some Korean movies lately. There always seems to be a good Karaoke scene in those. A Dirty Carnival and Memories of Murder are two good examples. Anyway, it's part of pop-culture; therefore, you will see it in movies until it dies out. What do y'all think?
