Title: Hard Eight
Year: 1997
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Plot: Before his commercial breakthrough with Boogie Nights (1997), writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson made this low-key drama. John (John C. Reilly), a half-bright loser stranded in Reno, is down to his last few bucks when Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall), taking pity on him, buys him breakfast and offers him a few tips on making money in the casinos. Two years later, John has become Sydney's partner, but his lack of common sense goes from problematic to dangerous when he falls in love with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a cocktail waitress who isn't above turning a few tricks when she needs to make money -- and isn't any brighter than John. Hall and Reilly, both first-rate character actors, are cast in rare leading roles, and Paltrow is cast strongly against type as a part-time prostitute with a serious lack of street smarts. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Although PTA is an incredible film-maker, and I love each and every movie he's made (but, alas, I have not seen Hard Eight/Sydney/his first movie), Wes Anderson has always hit home with me. Regardless of critical opinion on some of his films, I have adored everything he's made, and found the re-watchability factor with his movies to be better than most other idiosyncratic directors. So, my vote went, hands down, to Wes. I haven't had a chance to see any of Lindsay Anderson's films, but I've been eyeing up If... for a while and have This Sporting Life in my Netflix queue.
Body: Well this poll seems to have petered out already. I am glad that most of the entries have gotten votes, that usually indicates an interesting poll. I personally have not seen Michael Clayton or Basquiat, but I had a friend who liked Basquiat a lot. No one has voted for it and no one has mentioned even liking it really, so maybe that's the weakest debut for all of these directors. My favorite of the other three would be Blood Simple, even though it's still actually my least favorite Coen brothers film. Hard Eight is also good, and reveals PT Anderson's recognizable style in it's infancy. I feel like both of these were these artists weakest films, but these are also both amongst my favorite directors so I still think their weakest films are fantastic! As for Thank You For Smoking, I also found it to be a good movie, but not a favorite. The worst part was probably that precocious kid. I hate precocious kids in movies!
Body: This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown round #2”. Read more about that here.Hard EightP.T. Anderson's Magnolia and a Punch-Drunk Love are two of my favorite movies. I also think Boogie Nights is a very good movie, although it doesn't affect me as profoundly as those other two. I just watched Hard Eight, and have yet to see There Will Be Blood. So far my feeling is that each of Anderson's movies have been subsequently better. Hard Eight is a solid movie with good characters and good use of a style that would come to be perfected. Boogie Nights may just not appeal to me as much because I can't get entirely invested into the world of the pornography industry. But it is still well done. Magnolia is simply perfect, and Punch-Drunk Love is somehow even better in it's own way. Due to this trend in my personal enjoyment of his movies and the unbelievable amount of praise I've heard from both the general public, critics, and close friends, There Will Be Blood is certain to be amazing. And because of that I'm kind of putting it off to watching it until a day I feel like I need to see something I know will be great.Anyways, as for Hard Eight there is no reason to gripe. Some of Anderson's techniques are in more primitive stages, but it has wonderful moments (see a pack of matches spontaneously combust in John C. Reilly's pocket) and I like that he started out with a more simple story before moving into the more epic quality of his next two movies.Rating: 8/10
Body: This is a list for Round 2 of my movie year countdown viewing project as first described here. If by any strange chance whoever is reading this is actually following along you may notice that I'm still less than two thirds of the way through my original one. Well I'm starting this new one because as much as I love old movies it can get a little tedious watching just older movies. So I'm going to be blending my watching of the two lists together. Still focusing on the original one, but every once in a while sliding in the next entry from this new list.Again these new movies are limited to full length movies that are available on Netflix. And for this new round instead of picking a movie from every year, I will be picking a movie from every two years. For example the first movie must have come out during 2006 or 2007. The second movie must have come out in 2004 or 2005. The next in 2002 or 2003. You see.The list is not finished yet, but here is what I have decided so far. I will update this post later with the new flicks.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. Children of Men (2006)2. The New World (2005)3. Body: Thanks for the opinions Ryan!
The Coen Brothers: Fargo was great, but it's a flavor-of-the-week film. I'm going with The Man Who Wasn't There. I'm such a sucker for Scarlett Johansen.
What does flavor-of-the-week mean to you exactly? What flavor is Fargo? You get that flavor weekly? If you mean it's just a genre piece, well that's pretty much all of the Coens work. All of their movies are different genres. ESPECIALLY The Man Who Wasn't There.
Sofia Coppola: Lost in Translation. Hands down. If she ever tops this, I'd be surprised.
I think she just might be able to. If she did think how awesome that would be!
P.T. Anderson: Jesus, how does one decide on a single film of his? They're all masterpieces!
You didn't include Hard Eight in your links. Have you seen it? It's the only PT Anderson feature I haven't seen yet. Is it as good as the rest?
