<strong>Body:</strong> "Babe" (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) is a runt piglet with a kind heart who, by fate, comes into the life of a gentle farmer (James Cromwell, who was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role). The farmer realizes almost immediately that the pig is something special, and his suspecions are realized when it becomes clear that "Babe," which he calls "Pig" has a way with sheep and the other animals on his farm. This is a very cute movie, but has its problems. The biggest problem is the performances of the majority of the human cast. I really could not find these characters believable for the most part. Cromwell was probably the best of the human cast. Something that this movie does very nicely is the special effects. If you ask me, it was difficult to tell the difference between the actual animals and the animatronic ones. The soundtrack is not memorable, but is a good match for the film. Some of the most fun songs were sung on-camera by the three "mice", who read what I could describe as "chapter titles" seen throughout the movie. It is the animals which are the main focus of the movie, and are the most believable of the entire cast. Even though the voices were probably added at a later date, the actors seemed to have good chemistry. They also did a fantastic job at giving each animal personality. There are some sad moments in this movie, but there is no violence. There is also no "four-letter words" in the entire movie. I would also suggest that you try to get this in widescreen to appreciate the fields of the unnamed location. The cinematography is beautiful in this movie when it shows the scenery in wide-shots. This could be a pretty good rental if you have young children in your household if you ask me.<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> I want to wait on writing any critiques about Australia before I see it again. It was a beautiful film, but there was just something that was holding it back from being a truly magnificent film. I really liked Baz Luhrmann's other Aussie centric film Strictly Ballroom. It was interesting to watch it after seeing all of his later films and seeing how his personal style blossomed from his first film. A film that completely transformed my life was Muriel's Wedding. It was one of those movies that I could totally relate to at the time of my life that I first watched it and remains a favorite to this day. Toni Collette (pre-Sixth Sense), Rachel Griffiths (pre-Six Feet Under) and an ABBA score, gotta love it. You can't mention Australian films without mentioning Paul Hogan and the indelible Crocodile Dundee. One of those horribly bad yet awesomely good films that you can't help but love. Lest we forget that it was nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award. Something to think about. Somersault was a really interesting independent flick from down under. Abbie Cornish was insanely good as the emotionally and physically scarred runaway looking for herself in a chaotic ski town. Worth checking out. Yes, I'm going to say it: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. A bunch of drag queens consisting of Agent Smith from The Matrix, Leonard Shelby from Memento, and General Zod from Superman driving through the outback in a pink bus. 'Nuff said. One that ALWAYS make me tear up is Babe. Cute little talking pig trying to be a dog. For the longest time I thought this was an English film but eventually found out that it was an Aussie pic. Another family friendly Aussie film is The Rescuers Down Under. Interestingly, both of the Rescuers movies deal with extremely dramatic issues of kidnapping and child abuse which I really respect considering they are Disney films. Preempting American History X with the remorseful, introspective Neo Nazi rethinking his life, Romper Stomper had Russell Crowe and quite a bit more emotion. And I'm gonna go ahead and mention Dead Alive since I doubt we're going to get around to doing a Weekly Theme on New Zealand films. It is probably my favorite slapstick comedy / horror film. Love Love Love it. Quigley Down Under - I vaguely remembering my parents dragging me to this at the movie theater when I was 8 years old. All I remember was that my Gummi Bears were a helluva lot more interesting that the movie.<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> The fanboys are so serious about The Dark Knight being the best film of 2008 that if the Academy snubs the comic-book adaptation for a Best Picture nomination, they’re liable to storm the Kodak Theatre on February 22 in protest. But why should anyone be worried that it won’t get the nomination? It wouldn’t be much of a coup for the year’s top-grossing blockbuster to be named one of the five Best Picture candidates. In fact, since the very first Academy Awards, the top award has often been handed out to films that were #1 at the box office in their respective year. And the last time it happened was as recent as 2003, with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Thanks to popular and talented filmmakers like D.W. Griffith, Walt Disney, David Lean and Steven Spielberg, it’s hardly uncommon for films to make money and earn critical respect. But this isn’t an opportunity to spotlight overrated top-grossing Best Pictures like Titanic, Rain Man and Rocky, which were decidedly not their year’s best films. Rather, this is a chance to ease the minds of fanboys just in case The Dark Knight doesn’t get the nod. Some of these blockbusters were indeed nominated for Best Picture, and a few even won the award, but some of them were both their year’s biggest moneymaker (in the U.S.) and best film (from the U.S.) without gaining proper Academy recognition.


1937: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 
Domestic Gross: $66,596,803
It’s certainly not the best feature-length animated film from Disney. That would be the box office disappointment Pinocchio, which came out a few years later and revealed the true breadth of Uncle Walt’s magic. But this was the first, and it’s enchanting enough that it towers over even the best live-action films of its year, including The Awful Truth, The Life of Emile Zola and The Good Earth.

1946: The Best Years of Our Lives
Domestic Gross: $11,300,000
If a film like this came out today, it would probably be ignored at the box office, just as most movies responding to the Iraq War and its effects have been box office poison. Yet The Best Years of Our Lives was a huge hit with moviegoers, and it was named Best Picture, too. If you haven’t seen it, you might think that its success had to do with the idea that movies were far more patriotic in tone then. But in reality, this film is more critical of post-wartime America and more supportive and revealing of veteran’s struggles than much of what Hollywood attempts now.

1957: The Bridge on the River Kwai
Domestic Gross: $17,195,000
If you only knew the successes of Snow White and this film, you might think the best way to both box office and Oscar gold is to feature a song involving whistling. Unlike “Whistle While You Work,” however, the catchy tune in this film was a hit from decades earlier, and certain circumstances allowed it to add subtext, one of many elements that makes David Lean’s POW epic so rich and wonderful. Of course, it’s that widescreen mise-en-scene that really makes this film just barely edge out 12 Angry Men and Sweet Smell of Success to be considered the year’s finest Hollywood release.

1962: Lawrence of Arabia

Nothing against Christopher Nolan and his interest in making truly big-screen-appropriate blockbusters, but even if he does want to completely shoot his next movie for the IMAX format, he’ll never be as fit for 70mm as David Lean was. We all remember that famous shot of the rider in the distance who eventually approaches the foreground, but despite what’s written above for the River Kwai’s entry on this list, Lean wasn’t just good for widescreen spectacle. He could actually direct action pretty well, too, for starters. If only he’d lived long enough to have been forced to deliver his own superhero flick.

1965: Doctor Zhivago
Domestic Gross: $60,954,000
Enough with the David Lean, right? This isn’t even that great a film, but the mid-60s weren’t a particularly good time in terms of Hollywood output. If you prefer, some sources place The Sound of Music as the year’s box office champ (its listed domestic take includes rerelease income), and there’s plenty who think that Best Picture-winner was the best film of 1965 instead (hi, Mom).

1972: The Godfather
Domestic Gross: $86,691,000
It won the box office, it won the Academy Awards and it still has the utmost respect of film critics and fans today. Few people could honestly say there was a better film in 1972. Even the silly voters who allowed Bob Fosse to win Best Director for Cabaret that year probably wish they could go back and change their minds.

1980: The Empire Strikes Back
Domestic Gross: $209,398,025
Argue all you want that 1977 deserves to be on this list, too, but both Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Annie Hall are better films. Besides, anytime critics include the first Star Wars as one of the best films of all time, they actually depreciate the quality of its sequel. Putting that film in the same league with The Empire Strikes Back is like putting the 1966 Batman movie on equal standing with The Dark Knight. Okay, that’s overdoing it. Maybe like putting Batman Begins on the same level, then.

1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Domestic Gross: $209,562,121
It’s terrible to have to include two George Lucas productions on this list, mainly because by 1999 he was putting out films that were their year’s top earners and top turkeys. Plus, thanks to the latest Indiana Jones movie, it’s a little tough to watch Raiders without thinking of how the protagonist will one day fly through the air in a nuked fridge. But it’s still a damn good action-adventure flick, arguably the greatest of all time.

1985: Back to the Future
Domestic Gross: $210,609,762
Robert Zemeckis gets more credit for the double success of Forrest Gump because that film won Best Picture in addition to topping the box office in 1994. Yet it’s this top-grossing film that deserves more esteem. It may not have been nominated for Best Picture, but it captured the mid-80s’ hunger for science fiction and nostalgia perfectly, turning it into one of the most memorable films of the decade, and of all time. With all respect to Sydney Pollack and John Huston, does anyone even think of Out of Africa or Prizzi’s Honor much today?

1995: Toy Story
Domestic Gross: $191,796,233
Compared to WALL-E, this film seems technically crude. It’s perhaps analogous to, in 1995, comparing Toy Story to Snow White. That’s how far it seems the wizards at Pixar have come in 13 years. But just as Disney’s first animated feature enchants us still to this day, Toy Story, far from being dated, has aged better than most of Hollywood’s films from the same year. If ever there was a year for a Pixar movie to be nominated for Best Picture, 1995 was the year. It was better than Braveheart, let alone Babe, then, and it’s better than those films now. If you prefer, some sources place The Sound of Music as the year’s box office champ (its listed domestic take includes rerelease income), and there’s plenty who think that Best Picture-winner was the best film of 1965 instead (hi, Mom).

1972: The Godfather

It won the box office, it won the Academy Awards and it still has the utmost respect of film critics and fans today. Few people could honestly say there was a better film in 1972. Even the silly voters who allowed Bob Fosse to win Best Director for Cabaret that year probably wish they could go back and change their minds.

1980: The Empire Strikes Back
Domestic Gross: $209,398,025
Argue all you want that 1977 deserves to be on this list, too, but both Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Annie Hall are better films. Besides, anytime critics include the first Star Wars as one of the best films of all time, they actually depreciate the quality of its sequel. Putting that film in the same league with The Empire Strikes Back is like putting the 1966 Batman movie on equal standing with The Dark Knight. Okay, that’s overdoing it. Maybe like putting Batman Begins on the same level, then.

1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Domestic Gross: $209,562,121
It’s terrible to have to include two George Lucas productions on this list, mainly because by 1999 he was putting out films that were their year’s top earners and top turkeys. Plus, thanks to the latest Indiana Jones movie, it’s a little tough to watch Raiders without thinking of how the protagonist will one day fly through the air in a nuked fridge. But it’s still a damn good action-adventure flick, arguably the greatest of all time.

1985: Back to the Future
Domestic Gross: $210,609,762
Robert Zemeckis gets more credit for the double success of Forrest Gump because that film won Best Picture in addition to topping the box office in 1994. Yet it’s this top-grossing film that deserves more esteem. It may not have been nominated for Best Picture, but it captured the mid-80s’ hunger for science fiction and nostalgia perfectly, turning it into one of the most memorable films of the decade, and of all time. With all respect to Sydney Pollack and John Huston, does anyone even think of Out of Africa or Prizzi’s Honor much today?

1995: Toy Story
Domestic Gross: $191,796,233
Compared to WALL-E, this film seems technically crude. It’s perhaps analogous to, in 1995, comparing Toy Story to Snow White. That’s how far it seems the wizards at Pixar have come in 13 years. But just as Disney’s first animated feature enchants us still to this day, Toy Story, far from being dated, has aged better than most of Hollywood’s films from the same year. If ever there was a year for a Pixar movie to be nominated for Best Picture, 1995 was the year. It was better than Braveheart, let alone Babe, then, and it’s better than those films now. <strong>Body:</strong> I don’t know what is the worse idea, an all-CGI 3-D Smurfs movie, as Paramount had planned, or a CGI/live-action mix, as Sony Animation is now planning for our beloved blue communists friends. I guess if we only think back to Alvin and the Chipmunks and Underdog, it’s easy to think Sony’s new plan for The Smurfs is a terrible idea. But I think the second Scooby-Doo movie worked pretty well as far as cartoon adaptations go, and there’s a chance Hollywood could do a good job again, despite the majority (including Garfield: The Movie, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the first Scooby-Doo) being on the bad side.
That said, I’m still no fan of the trend. However, if it must continue, I think it would be interesting to see any of the following 15 animated series, all of which feature the necessary mix of talking animals (or inanimate objects) and humans, turned into live-action movies with CGI characters:


The Yogi Bear Show - I feel it’s inevitable that we’ll be seeing this one soon enough. And if Hollywood is feeling lazy enough, the plot can be a remake of the animated feature Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear! Steve Carell will play Ranger Smith, of course.
Help!…It’s the Hair Bear Bunch! - Few people remember this Yogi Bear-like series starring three hippie bears, one of whom had a straggly afro. The movie would involve the usual plot in which the bears escape from the zoo and are chased by the human zoo-keeper and his fat assistant. I’d love to see the sweet production design that goes into the bear’s bachelor pad cave. And aside from the fact that CGI bears would make the invisible motorcycle easier to work with, live-action bears have been proven to be a much worse idea (see The Country Bears).
The Great Grape Ape Show - This would be kinda like Peter Jackson’s King Kong, only without the intention of making the CGI look realistic.  I’m not sure what the plot would be, but going with the King Kong idea, they could probably just have Grape Ape and Beagle Beagle visit New York (or another city) to allow for plenty of accidental destruction (isn’t that the only reason Transformers‘ last act was in a city?).
Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels - It’s like Scooby-Doo but with a caveman instead of a talking dog. They could probably just have a guy dressed up in a very hairy costume for the prehistoric superhero, but as long as CGI characters are bringing Hollywood so much dough, they might as well render him on a computer, too.
Speed Buggy - It’s like Scooby-Doo but with a talking car instead of a talking dog. And I bet audiences will be more comfortable with a CGI talking car than with a CGI talking dog.
Dynomutt, Dog Wonder - It’s like Scooby-Doo but with superheroes. Hey, I hear superheroes are big at the box office this century. Actually, I’m really, really surprised we haven’t heard about this one yet.
Jabberjaw - It’s like Scooby-Doo but with…. wait, I’m starting to see that most of these Hanna Barbera cartoons are a lot alike. But even more than Scooby-Doo, this would be like the live-action Josie and the Pussycats, except with the benefit of having a CGI shark who plays drums for the group. Because most of the action would take place under the sea, there’s a good chance this would be too expensive to produce.
Fangface - It’s like Scooby-Doo but not made by Hanna Barbera (however, it was produced by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, who also created Captain Caveman, Jabberjaw, Dynomutt and others on this list). Instead of a talking dog, here one of the mystery-solving teens is a werewolf. And despite everyone’s love for Lon Chaney Jr. and the Teen Wolf movies, Hollywood can rarely make a werewolf these days without CGI.
It’s Punky Brewster - They could always just base a movie off the original sitcom (though I doubt they ever would), but wouldn’t it be much cuter if there was a CGI character? Fortunately the cartoon series had that leprechaun-gopher thing named “Glomer.”
Snorks - I guess there were no humans in this cartoon, but knowing Hollywood’s ability to mess with things, some could surely be added. Either the Snorks somehow venture out of the sea or a friendly scuba diving kid finds them. Though for the latter, the budget could be too high. I wonder if the Snorks could survive out of water…
Ghostbusters - Would be allowed for there to be a feature film version of Filmation’s Ghostbusters — you know, the one that wasn’t based on the REAL Ghostbusters? The one that was actually based on a TV series that came before the movie Ghostbusters? Hmm. I guess this one should really go in the list of live-action series calling for CGI/live-action treatment (like ALF…)
The Archie Show - Obviously this one could be completely live-action. But that’s no fun. And that TV movie from 1990 was extremely disappointing. Solution: CGI Jughead!
Rainbow Brite - Hey, I really liked Rainbow Brite when I was a kid. Is that OK to admit yet? I may have even wanted a plush toy of Twink. Or maybe I did have a plush toy of Twink. Either way, I’d be the first heterosexual male in line at the theater for this one.
Rugrats - This one will only be kinda CGI. It can star real kids with CGI mouths, like what they do with animals in the Babe and Dr. Dolittle movies. Oh yeah, and what they do with babies in the Baby Geniuses movies. Of course, the animated Rugrats movies each made significantly more money than the Baby Geniuses movies, so anyone who’d actually take on this idea is an idiot.
 The Herculoids - I really don’t care if they make it all CGI, mixed CGI/live-action, all 2D animation, or what; all I care about is that I get to see Tundro on the big screen one day before I die. Back when I saw Jurassic Park for the first time, I thought the triceratops was really lame. But it wasn’t because it was obviously animatronic. It was because it couldn’t shoot rocks out of its horn like Tundro. The rest of the Herculoids, especially Igoo and Gloop & Gleep, would also be awesome to see in a movie. In fact, to be honest, I mostly just made this list in order to profess my desire for a Herculoids movie.

<strong>Body:</strong>   These are just some of my favorites that are kid-friendly and NOT Disney: Babe - Brings the tears every time I watch it. The Princess Bride - My favorite movie to watch when staying at home from school with a cold as a kid. The Bear - A live-action version of Bambi, but with a bear. Beetlejuice - I've always viewed this as a kid-friendly horror movie; a lurid sub-text to the film yet done without the bad language or overly horrific effects. Big - Just plain fun for kids and parents. Chicken Run - Not a favorite of mine, but know lots of friends with kids that love it. E.T. - Again, always brings the tears. Edward Scissorhands - Parents might want to exercise discretion with this one: there are some adult themes, but it is done in such a magical / fairy-tale manner that older kids can understand it.  The Iron Giant - LOVE this film and perfect for the whole family. Jurassic Park - Might be a little too intense for the little kids, but definitely a great action flick for the junior cineastes. Little Man Tate - Great flick about a boy-genius trying to overcome his immense intellect and make some friends. A Little Princess - Spectacular cinematography envelopes every frame of this magical film. The Secret Garden - Beautiful film. The Wizard of Oz - No explanation since I'm sure most kids have already seen this classic, but just in case you needed a reminder. Howl's Moving Castle - Not typically a fan of anime myself, this animated feature dubbed in English is just so captivating, loaded with interesting characters and a bizarre story line that is rather confusing but overall lots of fun. And the English dubbing was done by Disney but it's not technically a Disney film. Hope that helps some.<br/>
