Title: Dirty Dancing
Year: 1987
Director: Emile Ardolino
Plot: A teenage girl learns about love, adult responsibility, and how to do The Dirty Boogie in this romantic drama. In 1963, "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a 17-year-old spending the summer with her family at a resort hotel in the Catskills; she plans on being in the Peace Corps next summer, so this is expected to be her last summer as a carefree adolescent. Baby doesn't get along with her older sister, Lisa (Jane Brucker), and she's bored to tears by most of the older guests at the resort. However, one night Baby hears what sounds like a party going on in the employee's dormitory, and she pokes her head in to discover most of the hotel staff enjoying the sort of close dancing that would get you kicked out of the senior prom in no time flat. Baby is particularly struck by handsome Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), a dancer in the resort's floor show, and falls head over heels in love, wanting to be near him. When Johnny's dance partner, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), finds herself pregnant after a fling with one of the waiters, Baby volunteers to learn her steps and take her place; however, Baby's father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), will have none of it, convinced that Johnny is a low life and that his daughter is too young to understand her own feelings. Dirty Dancing was a surprise box-office hit, and the soundtrack album was an even bigger success, spawning several hit singles and inspiring a top-drawing concert tour featuring several of its artists. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
Body: Dirty Dancing My girlfriend, who saw precious few movies growing up, somehow managed to fall in love with this one. I had never seen it before, and neither had the spouses of many of her friends. So the women arranged a little party to subject us all to this film. Pretty much what I expected. A kind of woman's fantasy. I understand why it has such a following. The filmmakers knew what they were doing to lure the girls in. It has all of the elements, and the story editing and structure all fit into place. For the people it appeals to I mean, not for me. It had some amusing moments mostly laughable. I guess even most people who love it have to admit it's pretty much all cheesy. When it came out in the 80's it was supposed to be a period film about the 60's, but viewing it now it seems much more 80's than 60's. Rating: 4/10
Body: I say The Forbidden Dance because it was a cheap, terrible film made to capitalize on the craze started by Dirty Dancing. It is super ridiculous. It involves a Amazon princess who tries to get on TV to save her rain forest from an evil company. Of course, this leads to her meeting a rich guy who gets them into a lambada competition on television. And the dancing was about as exciting as seeing Cloris Leachman on Dancing With the Stars. At least Sig Haig played a witch doctor. Maybe this film justifies Captain Spaulding's reign of terror
Body: This is so hard; they're are so many it seems. Here goes: Dirty Dancing "Nobody puts baby in the corner." This was a super favorite movie of mine growing up. I loved this movie and would watch it every single day around the time when our laserdisc player was breaking. I'd ask my parents to watch it everyday until my mom hid the movie from me and lied to me saying that my uncle took it with him when he moved. I continued to believe this lie until my high school years, which was when my mom told me that we had it the whole time. Drop Dead Fred Also a favorite. I'd watch this over and over again, and it even made me wish I had an imaginary friend like Fred growing up. The Princess Bride I remember watching this all the time when I was really young. Despite my crazy fear of some old lady in the movie (I associated that characted as being a scary witch), I still liked watching this. Superman II Let's just say that I watched this movie religiously -- everyday after I'd come home from elementary school until the VCR broke. I was so bummed. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze Nothing like the teenage mutant ninja turtles facing against Shredder and a mutant dog and turtle. Oh yeah and the random role of Vanilla Ice in one of the scenes. TMNT were cool growing up. I even played the video game. "Aw, shell-shocked!"
Body: "High School Musical" represents everything I despise about the corporate juggernaut known as Disney: Flawless teens seemingly air-brushed by nature, ready-to-market characters prepared to franchise into every imaginable direction (stage play, television series, dolls, ice show, dolls, recording contracts, etc.), and a story you can set your watch to. It's also pretty darn fun, gosh darn it. I realize that the majority of the target audience of 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year' could not give two shakes of Zac Efron's hips as to what my opinion of the film is. So this review go out to all the parents out there. If there is a female child dwelling in your home and who is old enough to form a complete sentence, chances are good she knows of the juggernaut knows as "High School Musical" (or 'HSM' if you wanna b, like, hip). Chance are, too, that you have a musical number or two lodged in your cerebral cortex as it played on an endless loop in your DVD player, or as your child practiced some third-rate karaoke version of it in front of any and all reflective surfaces within your home. For this, their third outing, the East High Wildcats are in their freshly scrubbed final year in this homogenize high school, and the doubts and fears of life outside the hallowed halls are now front and center in the minds of leads Troy (Efron), Gabrielle (Vanessa Hudgens), Chad (Corbin Blue), Taylor (Monique Coleman), and Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale). As with any plot in a film with "musical" in the title, the teens plans to put on a group show, much to the dismay of the the self-absorbed Sharpay, who wants a one-woman show for her finale. And while it may feel like a cheap money-grabbing ploy to splash the big screen with this third installment, considering the first two films were squished into the confines of the small screen where their ratings shot through the ceiling, but considering the emotional resonance of high school's senior year, it seems rather fitting. It does not hurt that the cast don't seem phased by their universal omnipotence in the rooms of pre-pubescent girls and give each number their all. But the most inspired bits of this outing are compliments of director/choreographer Kenny Ortega. Ortega has lent his moves to movies since 1980s roller disco camp classic "Xanadu," and whose career since has busted some moves ("Dirty Dancing," the under-appreciated "Newsies") and lost its grooves ("Shag" or "Salsa," anyone?) -- and he's next set to direct the remake of the 80s equivalent to "HSM," "Footloose" in 2010) -- but he finds his groove early here and channels his inner Fosse. He never misses an opportunity to toss in a nod to musicals past, from the faux-tough "West Side Story" orneriness of "The Boys are Back," to the Busby Berkely-inspired "A Night to Remember," and even the spinning room of "Roman Holiday" for good measure. It's not a far cry from the "put on a show" mentality of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney so many decades ago. And as a parent of a young daughter who adores "Singin' in the Rain," it's a tad refreshing to witness another musical that can be easily inserted into the DVD player without fear of her emulating the pelvic thrusts of so many other hungry starlets in the current pop stratosphere. The only time "HSM3" trips on its stage is when it attempts to shoehorn its newest batch of fresh-faced cast members (poised and ready for their "High School Musical 4" debut, coming to a TV near you in 2009). They possess little of the mile-wide charisma of Efron or Tisdale's catty histrionics. It's a fitful send-off to seniors so squeaky clean, they make "ABC's Afterschool Specials" look like Larry Clarke's "Kids" by comparison. It's a cheery, chipper finale so wholesome it may leave calcium deposits in its wake, but so gleefully in love with its own power of positivity, it happily earns its tasseled mortarboard.
Body: Oh this is a good one! I'm definately a hopeless romantic underdog at heart, and *loved* the way 80's films portrayed highschool relationships, with their clearly defined archetypical characters and somewhat formulaic endings. For me, I think I was most shaped by: The Breakfast Club Valley Girl Say Anything Sixteen Candles (1984) They all had similar themes, of people winding up with someone that they typically shouldn't be interested in... this gave me a lot of hope as an awkward pubescent teenager.
As a kid, what 80s teen movie did you think high school romantic relationships would be most like? For me, it is a toss up between three movies: For Keeps ( happy endings), Dirty Dancing ( fleeting love), and The Breakfast Club ( flirtations)
Body: Oh I agree, I really liked the Fame movie and loved the Fame series even more. How many times did I end up singing along with the tv! Other inspiring movies from that era... oh probably The Karate Kid soooo made me want to take martial arts lessons! I guess anything with a montage right? Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, hmm I'm sensing a dancing trend here.
Body: 5-17-2008 I think Patrick Swayzy and Jennifer Gray were wonderful in Dirty Dancing. The rest of the cast was very good also. I have it on VHS and I am going to get it on DVD so I can watch it over and over again as I used to do. I am so sorry to hear about Patrick's illness. It always happens to the best doesn't it? I lost my father at age 58 and still miss him. I hope Patrick has some more quality life with wife Lisa and other family members. I will be very saddened if this disease takes him away so young. 5scarlett5 Arlington, Texas
