Title: Dead Alive
Year: 1993
Director: Peter Jackson
Plot: Director Peter Jackson's second feature cheerfully trumps the gross-out quotient of his splatterfest debut, the appropriately named Bad Taste. The tone is cartoonishly comic, and the premise is simple: The village dweeb (Timothy Balme) is trying to maintain a budding romance with the sweet Paquita (Diana Penalver) while concealing the fact that his overbearing mum (Elizabeth Moody, in an amazing good-sport performance) is a flesh-eating zombie. (She owes her condition to a bite from a "Sumatran Rat Monkey" at the local zoo.) Complicating matters even further is Les, a greedy uncle (Ian Watkin), who suspects that his sister has died and is eager to occupy her elegantly furnished Victorian mansion. The climax is a housewarming party Les throws to celebrate his "inheritance;" what he really gets is his comeuppance, thanks to his sister and her similarly afflicted zombie pals, who burst out of their basement prison to turn the guests into appetizers. Our hero finally cuts a wide swath through the zombie party crashers with the help of a rotary blade lawn mower, leaving the house awash in blood and body parts in order to save his romance. ~ Tom Wiener, All Movie Guide
Body: I want to wait on writing any critiques about Australia before I see it again. It was a beautiful film, but there was just something that was holding it back from being a truly magnificent film. I really liked Baz Luhrmann's other Aussie centric film Strictly Ballroom. It was interesting to watch it after seeing all of his later films and seeing how his personal style blossomed from his first film. A film that completely transformed my life was Muriel's Wedding. It was one of those movies that I could totally relate to at the time of my life that I first watched it and remains a favorite to this day. Toni Collette (pre-Sixth Sense), Rachel Griffiths (pre-Six Feet Under) and an ABBA score, gotta love it. You can't mention Australian films without mentioning Paul Hogan and the indelible Crocodile Dundee. One of those horribly bad yet awesomely good films that you can't help but love. Lest we forget that it was nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award. Something to think about. Somersault was a really interesting independent flick from down under. Abbie Cornish was insanely good as the emotionally and physically scarred runaway looking for herself in a chaotic ski town. Worth checking out. Yes, I'm going to say it: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. A bunch of drag queens consisting of Agent Smith from The Matrix, Leonard Shelby from Memento, and General Zod from Superman driving through the outback in a pink bus. 'Nuff said. One that ALWAYS make me tear up is Babe. Cute little talking pig trying to be a dog. For the longest time I thought this was an English film but eventually found out that it was an Aussie pic. Another family friendly Aussie film is The Rescuers Down Under. Interestingly, both of the Rescuers movies deal with extremely dramatic issues of kidnapping and child abuse which I really respect considering they are Disney films. Preempting American History X with the remorseful, introspective Neo Nazi rethinking his life, Romper Stomper had Russell Crowe and quite a bit more emotion. And I'm gonna go ahead and mention Dead Alive since I doubt we're going to get around to doing a Weekly Theme on New Zealand films. It is probably my favorite slapstick comedy / horror film. Love Love Love it. Quigley Down Under - I vaguely remembering my parents dragging me to this at the movie theater when I was 8 years old. All I remember was that my Gummi Bears were a helluva lot more interesting that the movie.
Body:
Obviously this applies to any genre that you think is completely over the top nuts in any way, shape or form. 1. Dead Alive Peter Jackson before he dealt in sprawling, long winded epics. This is THE zombie movie to see. Hilarious acting, hilarious catch phrases (pretty much everyone is familiar with "I kick ass for the lord!" by now, right?), and tons and tons of blood. I can hardly sit still during the custard/pus scene. Must see scene: Lawnmower vs. Zombies!!! 2. Live Free or Die Hard John McClane goes from limping around barefoot and using whatever he can find as a weapon in the first Die Hard to launching a car into a helicopter and then later wrestling with a jet plane. This movie is over the top in an amazing, I can't believe this is happening kind of way. 3. Rambo The same thing goes for Rambo as Live Free or Die Hard. Except this time he goes from setting booby traps around a forest to turning around a machine gun attatched to a jeep and blasting the dude in the front seat. So breathtakingly savage I watched the whole movie smiling and slackjawed. 4. Dead or Alive Takashi Miike is one of the reigning kings of over the top. Just in the beginning of this film there is a guy doing what I will assume is the world's longest line of cocaine, a greasy stripper, an incredibly slow throat slitting that spews a geyser of blood, a guy getting shot in the stomach at a restaurant and everything he has eaten so far gets flung towards the camera, a guy jumping on top of a car in the middle of a busy street and blowing away the passenger....this is all in the first 7 minutes of the film. It just gets better and better from there. 5. The Doom Generation Loads of sex, slurping down a certain seminal fluid (twice!), decapitation, castration, arm being shot off, a stabbing in the male nether region...this film has it all.
Timur Bekmambetov. directed Night Watch, Day Watch and the new Angelina Jolie movie, Wanted. All of which would have to be described as "over the top"
Body: A ruthless farmer genetically engineers a new race of sheep to revolutionize farming. However, when environmental activists steal one of the by-products and accidentally set it loose, the sheep suddenly develop a liking for blood and humans start transforming into super-sheep. And Henry, a former farm boy with a sheep-phobia, is the only one who can try to stop them...This is probably the best splatter movie I've seen since Braindead, which incidentally was also shot in New Zealand. In addition to the cool and low-key special effects the movie is full of hilarious scenes and funny lines. Especially the dialogs between Henry and Experience, the environmental activists, are laugh out loud funny.
Body: First off, I'd like to welcome myself back from hiatus...Welcome back, me! Secondly, I'd like to give mad props to all of you who have kept our little group going...I know we were ALL on hiatus for a bit, but I've discovered some new discussions that look promising to reply to. Good going! Now, on with MY discussion!I recently purchased a few movies from ye olde Wal-Mart and one of them was The Hand with...uh...Michael Caine, I believe. I remember watching this little gem when I was wee and never EVER again sticking my arms out of the car window. And I do mean never EVER. The premise of the movie, as I recall from the little I remember (and the back of the movie case) is that this guy (Caine) is an artist or a writer or bull fighter or something involving much mechanical precision. BUt he's drivin' one day with his arm out the car window and WHACK! a semi comes on by and hacks his hand right off. Then, the hand (for reasons still unknownst to me) comes BACK and starts terrorizing him. Hate it when that happens. But I recall some other movies with "phantom limbs," like Evil Dead 2 (duh). And Return of the Living Dead Part II, with the lady's head that says, "Get this goddamn screwdriver outta my head!"...is a head a limb? I don't know. It seems reasonable to me. Anyway, what other movies have Zombie Limbs? I'm pretty sure Dead Alive had some in the midst of its hacking and slicing. But that's the only other movie I can remember them in.
Body: Ok. Here I am, late to the party as usuall! I was pleasantly surprised by this 'Total Films' list. I was pleased to see ALMOST all of my favorite Horror Movie directors represented! Carpenter, DePalma, Romero, Kubrick, Raimi, HITCHCOCK, Hawks, Siegel, Tarantino, Freidkin et al. I like all the films of Shyamalan, most notably 'Signs', and I think his spot on the list is well deserved. Most noteably missing are Wes Craven and Tobe Hooper.... but then what else would you expect coming from me? .... Anyhow, I was VERY pleasantly surprised to see Peter Jackson at number 9! This is a well deserved honor for this underestimated little director from New Zealand! I thought 'King Kong' was a failure but I saw that coming a mile away! You can NOT remake a 'masterpiece' and expect it to be better than the original! When will these guys figure this out? And if you dismiss his earlier, splattery 'gore-fests', or exploitation fare like 'Heavenly Creatures', you are left with only one thing... "The Lord Of The Rings" ! I am pleased to see that I am not the only one to propel Mr. Jackson right to the front of my 'favorite directors' list based ONLY on the magnificent job he did of bringing this trilogy to life! Also, I was sad to see the 'Italian-Horror' genre all but unmetioned... I think Argento could have made the list, at least...
Body: Just for the record, besides the cheezy clay diseased monkey, this movie's great. The scene at the party with the lawnmower, awesome. The scene with the tae-kwan-do preist, great. The zombies screwin', still the only scene of it's kind on film. Yeah,it's a B or maybe even a D movie, I like it.
