If you want to stay home and watch movies on Halloween but actually getting your hands on the full slate of films on our Six Degrees of Frankenstein marathon seems like too much trouble, consider Turner Classic Movies your back-up. The channel began its 48 Hours of Horror this morning at 6:15 with a showing of Mad Love, the Peter Lorre-starring tale of fatal attraction for which I am a total nerd. Highlights coming up over the next two days include:


 William Castle’s Mr. Sardonicus (about a Baron who digs up the decomposing corpse of his dead dad to retrieve a lottery ticket, goes into shock and emerges with his face fixed in a grotesque grin), and his more famous but more gimmicky The Tingler.
I Walked With a Zombie already played this morning, but there are two more to come from producer Val Lewton: Cat People (7:30 AM Friday) and The Body Snatcher (3:30 pm Friday). The latter features both Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, and was directed by Robert Wise.
A clear precurson to Lewton’s work is White Zombie, starring Lugosi, which plays at 2:15 tomorrow. Kevin Buist wrote about the film in his piece on the science behind zombie fiction.
Halloween night is devoted to four films based on the work of H.P. Lovecraft. The only one I’ve seen is Die, Monster, Die, an AIP pic from 1965 starring my classic horror boyfriend, Boris Karloff. The TCM page for this drive-in classic sums up the bizarro plot better than I ever could: “Karloff assumes the role of Nahum Witley, a paraplegic scientist whose remote estate (with an enormous crater nearby) is visited by milquetoast American Stephen Rinehart (TV’s former “Johnny Yuma” and Japanese monster stalwart Nick Adams), an old college paramour of Witley’s daughter, Susan (Suzan Farmer). The locals don’t take kindly to the Witley family, and weird vegetation seems to be growing everywhere. As it turns out, Stephen was summed by the scientist’s ailing wife (Freda Jackson), who wants her daughter to escape. A mysterious glowing greenhouse, eerie howling within the house, and malevolent vines all figure in the horrific goings-on, linked to a radioactive meteorite which threatens to consume them all.” Also, it features some of the creepiest shitty hologram effects I’ve ever seen. The lighting is beautiful, the scorpion is pretty well done for 1957, but the writing must've been written by aliens: SCIENTIST 1: We've been driving all day, and that volcano doesn't seem to be getting any closer! SCIENTIST 2: Nobody put a gun in your back to make you become a geologist! SCIENTIST 1: (laughs) Yeah, but don't rub it in! That's one of my all-time favorite exchanges. There's only one cheesy monster movie I like more than The Black Scorpion, and that's The Tingler. The Killer Shrews is noteworthy, though I recommend watching the MST3K version. Otherwise it's only fun if you're in the mood to work for your fun. Same with Monte Hellman's largely incoherent Beast From Haunted Cave. A very far-out old movie is The Manster. It must have influenced the scene in Army of Darkness where Ash sprouts another head.<br/>

Pretty soon, it all reduces to semantics, but the label benefits those it describes in that it connects films that, on an individual basis, would be too small to register on most people’s radar. Would Hannah Takes the Stairs or Quiet City or Mutual Appreciation have warranted a NY Times piece on their own? (Then again, is the NYT even the right forum to discuss such films, which seem to do just fine with the more selective audience of the blogosphere?)
Debruge is here giving us an object lesson in why most applications of The M Word are really, really frustrating: the genre label becomes a polite form of thinly masking the condescending assumption that none of these films can stand on their own without it. Mutual Appreciation is not a film that needs a movement as a prerequisite, especially one which mostly coalesced after its premiere. As resolutely analog as it is, it also hardly fits in with Debruge’s wider argument that “important thing is that digital cameras, home editing software and the internet have enabled a new wave of filmmakers, many of whom have become very close friends, sharing equipment, ideas, cast and crew.”
This statement is not totally false, but at the risk of sounding like a cranky Marxist, it seems like he’s really talking about the means/tools of production. Goliath and Hannah Takes The Stairs might share an actor and certain technical commonalities, but I can’t imagine two films being more different in their sensibilities. By Debruge’s rationale, The Ten Commandments and The Tingler were part of the same “movement,” because both were shot on film cameras, both were released in movie theaters, both were produced by gimmicky showmen, and both productions employed Vincent Price.

Pretty soon, it all reduces to semantics, but the label benefits those it describes in that it connects films that, on an individual basis, would be too small to register on most people’s radar. Would Hannah Takes the Stairs or Quiet City or Mutual Appreciation have warranted a NY Times piece on their own? (Then again, is the NYT even the right forum to discuss such films, which seem to do just fine with the more selective audience of the blogosphere?)
Debruge is here giving us an object lesson in why most applications of The M Word are really, really frustrating: the genre label becomes a polite form of thinly masking the condescending assumption that none of these films can stand on their own without it. Mutual Appreciation is not a film that needs a movement as a prerequisite, especially one which mostly coalesced after its premiere. As resolutely analog as it is, it also hardly fits in with Debruge’s wider argument that “important thing is that digital cameras, home editing software and the internet have enabled a new wave of filmmakers, many of whom have become very close friends, sharing equipment, ideas, cast and crew.”
This statement is not totally false, but at the risk of sounding like a cranky Marxist, it seems like he’s really talking about the means/tools of production. Goliath and Hannah Takes The Stairs might share an actor and certain technical commonalities, but I can’t imagine two films being more different in their sensibilities. By Debruge’s rationale, The Ten Commandments and The Tingler were part of the same “movement,” because both were shot on film cameras, both were released in movie theaters, both were produced by gimmicky showmen, and both productions employed Vincent Price.

<strong>Body:</strong> Yes, Froggy, I saw The Tingler a long time ago when I was pretty young.  It was a HUG centipede suppose to be brought on my people when they are afraid, that is what makes shivers go up your back.  hee hee.  I remember seeing it and then I got really paranoid that I actually had one in my spine, you know it looked like vertebrae, how would anyone know.  It was a silly movie, but I LOVE Vincent Price, he made it good.   The original FLY is pretty funny the ending always cracks me up in a sad sort of way.  heeeellllpppp meeeeee (in a teeny little fly voice) The Fly Remake was pretty awesome but it was really gross I STILL cannot watch the arm wrestling scene...UGH.  That just freaks me out.  I can&#39;t remember about the medicine cabinet, did he have body parts that kept falling off?  <br/>

And beetles are bugs, damn it.On the flip-side, I was just wondering, whilst looking at posts on Spout and coming across this one again, The Tingler, I know, has Vincent Price.  And Vincent Price is a bad-ass.  But that is neither here nor there.  I&#39;ve never seen this one and is it really about a centipede dealy like the picture of the cover alludes to?  Don&#39;t think I&#39;m stupid!  I&#39;m just...lazy.Oh oh oh!  And The Fly!  The remake and the original!  Being a youngster, I saw the remake first and then thought the original was a bit lame, but still creepy and scary.  Does anyone know what Jeff Goldblum has in his medicine cabinet?
