Plot: Maldone was one of the first feature-length efforts of French filmmaker Jean Gremillon. The title character is a footloose bargee who returns to his ancestral home upon receiving a huge inheritance. At first, Maldone is reluctant to give up his carefree lifestyle, especially his lusty romance with a toothsome gypsy girl. Eventually, however, he accedes to the responsibilities of his social position, marrying the daughter of a wealthy neighbor and fathering a child. Though he tries to be a faithful husband and good father, Maldone simply can't get over his gypsy sweetheart, who has since become a famous actress. Finally, Maldone "breaks down," donning old clothes and scurrying back to his former haunts, in the vain hope that he will be reunited with his former love. There were two Romanian short films in the Great Expectations program. The Tube with a Hat by Radu Jude and Marilena de la P7 by Cristian Nemescu. Both were exhilerating because they were distinct, fresh voices from a rather unheard of place in the world of cinema.I really wanted to see Ghosts of Cité Soleil the way everyone I talked to who'd seen it seemed awestruck by it. But my schedule just didn't work out.

Body: I am so glad guest director J.P. Gorin and the co-directors of Telluride 2006 have introduced me to the work of Jean Grémillon. It boggles my mind such a film like Maldonne can be almost 80 years old and still overlooked. The sequence in the dance hall alone makes this film worth finding at all costs and should be cited in text books next to the Odessa Steps sequence of Battleship Potemkin and the Chorus Girls sequence in Citizen Kane. It's rare to see a film, like Maldonne, overflowing with experimentation but, at the same time, holding firm to sensitive storytelling. Whenever I see a film like this I want to mainline it into the veins of film students. Such creativity brings courage to artists of any age. I love this quote filmmaker J.P. Gorin wrote in a note to himself "as a self medication," When stuck: Take two Grémillon and call me tomorrow...
