Title: Cocoon
Year: 1985
Director: Ron Howard
Plot: Cocoon is a warm-hearted science-fiction fable that avoids becoming overly corny thanks to the performances of its mostly senior cast. Wilford Brimley, Don Ameche, and Hume Cronyn are three old-timers who sneak out of their retirement home a few days a week to swim in the large pool on an abandoned estate next door. When the threesome begins to feel curiously younger, they discover strange pods on the floor of the pool. These pods are alien cocoons, which are being pulled from the ocean by a team of extra-terrestrials in human form led by Walter (Brian Dennehy), who has hired a local charter operator (Steve Guttenberg) to assist him. Walter explains to the seniors that energy from the cocoons is restoring youth and vigor to the older men every time they go for a dip. The aliens agree to let the men continue to swim in secret, but of course they can't keep their discovery to themselves. Soon the pool is swarming with retirees, with the notable exception of Bernie (Jack Gilford), who has no interest in prolonging life any longer than necessary. The aliens ultimately prepare to return home and offer the retirees eternal life if they leave Earth behind as well. Director Ron Howard treats his old-timers with care and dignity, and they respond with deeply sympathetic performances (Ameche won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar); the film's science-fiction trappings ably sustain the story's all-too-human ruminations on youth, aging, life, and death. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
Body: My older brother was the devil. Seriously, Beelzebub living in the room next to mine. Growing up he would be my babysitter and force me to watch every single scary film the local movie store had on video.1.) Sharks (Jaws, et al) - Living on the West Coast less than twenty minutes from the beach, it was a safe bet that after watching all of these our family trips to the beach kept me securely on the dunes as far away from the water as possible. I sadly hold sharks (specifically Great White sharks) as my one and only honest to goodness irrational fear to this day.2.) Psychopaths (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween) - Lumped together due to that fact that growing up I never kept track of which one had the machete or knives for hands or wore a mask since I was basically screaming and crying the whole time, begging my brother let me go to my room and hide safely under my blanket with my stuffed animals.3.) Scantily Clad Older Women & Michael Douglas (Basic Instinct & Fatal Attraction) - Not only was my brother pretty sick, my parents should have used more discretion in the movies that they took me to at the local cinema. My mother made sure to cover my eyes during the nude/sex scenes but strangely allowed me to watch the boiled bunny, bathtub and ice pick scenes from these two films. I remember screaming and locking myself in my room when my parents got me a babysitter that somewhat resembled Glenn Close with that crazy ratted blonde hair.4.) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - The cave o' bugs, the heart pulled from the chest, the buffet of monkey brains & baby snakes and the whipping of little boys pretty much sums up why this was not entertaining for me as a child.5.) Cocoon - Something about all those inexplicably energetic old people in the pool with the creepy eggs and the naked gold aliens popping out of them in the end for whatever reason scared the poop out of me and made me fear old people for quite some time after watching it.That's about it.
Body: 5 Lessons Learned from Cocoon:1. Old people are feisty – They get uproarious and passionate about things, and not just a lack of 4 pm supper options. Also they curse, want to have adventures involving trespassing and sneaky swimming in abandoned pools, and they talk about farting, boners and ball sacks.2. Old people are selfish – Aliens be damned! They don’t care if swimming in a pool for the restoration of their fleeting youth at the good graces of a couple kindly aliens sucks the life blood out of 10,000 year old space travelers. When the time comes to ditch this world for the next they are willing to do it at the expense of anyone who gets in there way. Earthlings be damned!3. Aliens are not all bad – It could be the rest of our video collection talking, but we were shocked to discover not all aliens want to destroy, dismember, melt faces, kidnap hicks for scientific research purposes, and/or obliterate civilizations. Some will, for absolutely no reason, save a group of good-for-nothing old timers from certain death, even though they have done nothing but contribute to a pain in their glowing asses for the last 90 minutes.4. Yelling “Fountain of Youth” in a crowded old-folks home is akin to yelling “Fire” in a movie theatre. And we now know this from our own experience (both instances)5. Old people still "do it" – And talk about doing it. And apparently want to do it with other old people. Also see # 1. Who knew?! Originally posted on:Dollar Video Curator
