Title: Cinderella
Year: 1950
Director: Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson
Plot: Cinderella was Walt Disney's return to feature-length "story" cartoons after eight years of turning out episodic pastiches like Make Mine Music and Three Caballeros. A few understandable liberties are taken with the original Charles Perrault fairy tale (the wicked stepsisters, for example, do not have their eyes pecked out by crows!) Otherwise, the story remains the same: Cinderella, treated as a slavey by her selfish stepfamily, dreams of going to the Prince's ball. She gets her wish courtesy of her Fairy Godmother, who does the pumpkin-into-coach bit, then delivers the requisite "be home by midnight" warning. Thoroughly enchanting the prince at the ball, our heroine hightails it at midnight, leaving a glass slipper behind. The Disney people do a terrific job building up suspense before the inevitable final romantic clinch. Not as momentous an animated achievement as, say, Snow White or Fantasia, Cinderella is a nonetheless delightful feature, enhanced immeasurably by the introduction of several "funny animal" characters (a Disney tradition that has held fast into the 1990s, as witness Pocahontas), and a host of a sprightly songs, including "Cinderelly," "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," and -- best of all -- "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Body: "Cinderella" is based on the French author Charles Perrault (January 12, 1628–May 16, 1703) 17th century fable about a seriously mistreated stepdaughter who finds her "Prince Charming" (voiced William Phipps) with the help from her "Fairy Godmother" (voiced Verna Felton). The script of this movie is fairly weak, but the classic Disney animation is spectacular -- even after 55 years. There are a few plot holes, and poor character development. Many of the characters could have been expanded on a lot more. One character that's poorly developed, more than any other in the movie is "Prince Charming". The character is wonderfully animated, like the rest, but he has the fewest lines and screen time. Another character that should have got more screen time is the "Fairy Godmother", I would have liked to have seen her come back to aid "Cinderella" (voiced by Ilene Woods) and the "mice" (voiced by Clint McCauley and James MacDonald) get "Cinderellie", as she was affectionately called by the "mice", get out of her locked room near the end of the movie. One performace that stands out is by Eleanor Audley, who plays "Lady Tremaine". Just by using her voice, she created a character that was purely mean and cold as ice toward "Cinderella". The "mice" are very good comic relief, however the mostly squeeky voices got under my skin rather quickly. I personally would have liked to have seen less of them. Other comic relief spots were delivered by "Cinderella's" pet dog, "Bruno" (MacDonald) and his archrival, "Lucifer", the pet cat of "Lady Tremaine" and her "daughters" (voiced by Rhoda Williams and Lucille Bliss). However, it's the classic animation that makes this movie the classic it is. The use of shadows and color is amazing. And thanks to the Disney tradition of using real life models to aid in animating the natural movement of living beings, clothing and everything else there is a pretty realistic feel to the movie. Children will love the story, except for boys of course, and the adults will love the animation. This is a classic that is worth taking a look at.
Body: It's pretty simple, just pick an animal and then say what movies they would like to watch. This is a tribute to my hamster, Jeffrey. He would like to watch: Ratatouille Cinderella Of Mice and Men The Green Mile Stuart Little An American Tail An American Tail: Fievel Goes West The Killer Shrews (when he's in the horror mood)
Body: I just got back from seeing "Enchanted" at the theater, and I have to say, I really really liked it. The folks who made this movie made sure to do their homework on all the classic Disney fairy tale movies, and produced something akin to a collage of "Snow White," "Cinderella" and "Splash." There were jabs and inside humor aplenty, but the story itself also managed to be sweet and enjoyable on its own merit. This is the fairy-tale movie for the millennial generation. Sarcastic, but not cynical, sweet, but not saccharine (at least not as far as I was concerned. Guys, feel free to disagree).Anyway, watching "Enchanted" brought to mind all the other fairy tale parodies, updates and mashups that have been made over the years. We've got "Shrek" and its two sequels, "The Princess Bride" and lesser-known movies like "A Simple Wish" (one of my childhood favorites, though I'm afraid its quality hasn't held up much over the years). What do you guys think? Any favorites? Opinions on any of the movies listed or the fractured fairy tale genre in general? What about favorite fairy tale/Disney princess movies? Let's discuss!
Body: "What a load of sh*t. I'm sorry, but this movie should not be viewed by any child, especially little girls. The world we live in is one of deception, betrayal and heartache. To ellude to young children that dreams just "happen" to the unfortunate who perservere is ignorant in my opinion.
