As the Toronto International Film Festival draws to a close, we talk with Karina Longworth and Kevin Kelly about their experience. The Coen Brothers’ new film Burn After Reading gets a mixed reaction, apparently it’s better if you get to see it with Adrien Brody. Brody’s new film, The Brothers Bloom, by Brick director Rian Johnson, is one of Kevin’s favorites.
The Fall, a lush surrealist epic directed by Tarsem (yes, he only goes by one name), is out on DVD. Adam and I mull it over, comparing it to the 1973 campy classic Zardoz, starring a half-naked Sean Connery.
Lastly, I interview Michelle Byrd, executive director of IFP about Independent Film Week, taking place in New York September 14-19. I should note that I accidentally mispronounced her name as “Boyd,” my apologies. It’s sort of funny if you imagine I have a strong Brooklyn accent for just that one word.

It shows one's capacity for human connectedness in The Deer Hunter (I'm thinking of when Deniro is eventually able to have sex with Meryl Streep). The sex act is a prize to be seized in Superbad and a crillion other films. Does this count as an obsession? Sometimes it's a blatant obsession, such as in Quills. Or one of the trappings of success, like in Jerry Maguire. It shows one's awakening from apathy and absurd constrainst in Zardoz.    <br/>

It's hard to argue otherwise, since the opening scenes include dialogue such as "The gun is good, the penis is evil." But I thought the movie was more about life/death and finding purpose than anything else. However, in Zardoz, sex is behavior that shows someone is "really living." Which got me thinking, how else could one portray people who are "really living"? It hit me that Pixar did a great job of showing the humans' transition from apathy to passion in Wall-E -- noticing the stars for the first time, the pleasure of holding hands, considering how fun it might be to get in the pool.    <br/>

I recently rented it again and really enjoyed it since it is so bad! The dialogue is so bad that it's memorable. The special effects are hilarious and worth seeing! And seeing Sean Connery prance around in ared jock strap for most of the film is priceless! In fact I'm going to host a Zardoz outdoor movie party on my lawn next month! Let me know if you want to attend and experience one of my favorite classic cult B movies. <br/>

A murderer with more deaths on his hands, than Hitler at somewhere around 14,000,000 persons ( not including any of the obvious deaths of Civilians and Soldiers during World War II ), more than Stalin put at somewhere around 20,000,000 persons.  Mao, if credited is the correct word, may be responsible for as many as 40,000,000 to 70,000,000 deaths of his own country men. How can I or we comprehend these numbers??? &lsquo;According to Mao: The Unknown Story, &quot;Mao Tse-tung, who for decades held absolute power over the lives of one-quarter of the world&#39;s population, was responsible for well over 70 million deaths in peacetime, more than any other twentieth century leader&quot; and claimed that he was willing for half of China to die to achieve military-nuclear superpowerdom. Between 1967 and 1976, nearly 8 million Chinese youths were &quot;sent down&quot; for specialized training to the remotest corners of the country.  The relocation of millions of urban youth to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution is one of the major social events in modern Chinese history, and it has profoundly shaped the life experience and mental outlook of a whole generation. Many prominent personalities in China today are members of that generation; some of these people will lead the country in the next century. To write anything more will only lessen the film&rsquo;s impact, but who is this human being who could write poetry like this and destroy millions of individuals?  A human being, nothing yet contradictory?  &lsquo;&hellip;only today are there men of feeling.&rsquo;Good God, what does this part mean???What does it mean that this statement was written by Mao??? If anything, the happy, smiling people, shown in these inspiring posters beneath Mao&#39;s benevolent gaze, should be replaced with the grimacing,  rotted, tattered, desiccated corpses of Men, Women, and Children, his millions of victims, rising from their graves.
