Spout Post: SXSW for Those Left At Home. Today in Film Bloggery 03/13/09

Post By: SpoutBlog
Body: The Internet seems eerily quiet today, which is probably due to all the blog writers being miles above wifi signals, flying towards Austin for SXSW. Of course, there are some posts here and there discussing rumors about Jon Favreau directing The Avengers and continued commentary on Watchmen’s box office future and Joaquin Phoenix’s “brawl” in Miami, but there’s not much new news to get excited about.
So, I’ve decided to highlight some recent SXSW-related posts from other blogs in anticipation of the festival. I won’t be there this year, and the Bloggery posts will be taking a week off in order to let SpoutBlog focus on film reviews, interviews and other SXSW goodies, so this is my one chance to be a part of the SXSW fun, albeit from a very cold, very jealous perspective up here in NYC.
I wish everyone down in Austin a good time and, more importantly, a lot of good movies.

Pop Candy’s Whitney Matheson, who is attending SXSW, but not the film portion, reminds us homebound movie lovers that we (and she) can watch SXSW films, including Joe Swanberg’s Alexander the Last, on IFC’s Festival Direct channel this week.
Anne Thompson notifies us that we can also watch some of last year’s films on Hulu.
Lewis Wallace at Underwire directs our attention to SXSW Bingo, which should be played by any of you down in Austin. Not only does it look fun, but you can actually win an Amazon Kindle 2. Please let us know if you do play so we may follow your gaming via Twitter.
I also hope to hear about more film critic fights, though if the guys at Pajiba aren’t kidding, I may not have to worry:
There are several Southerners on staff. When we drink, some of us may get carried away by the atmosphere of our motherlands and start shit-kicking other movie bloggers. We apologize in advance (except for you, Harry Knowles. You had it coming).

In honor of the festival’s attention to both film and music, The Screengrab will be taking a look at some favorite movies about music, any of which we should be able to rent in our respective neighborhoods. Here’s a bit from Andrew Osborne’s list, specifically his appreciation for Stop Making Sense:
I never got a chance to see David, Tina, Chris & Jerry play live — not all at the same time, anyway — but dancing in the aisles with dozens of fellow Head-heads during the classic concert film’s theatrical run was the next best thing…kinda like Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience without the special glasses and shitty music. Indeed, Demme makes his subjects pop off the screen without 3D technology, pyrotechnics or any of the usual rock-doc clichés: all he needed was a lamp, a big suit, a good shot list and one of the best rock bands of all time.

And of course there will always be the reviews, from which we homebound film fans can find out what films to check out — if they ever make their way to our respective necks of the woods, that is. Michael Tully of Hammer to Nail gives us an interesting disclaimer for his site’s forthcoming reviews:
No contributor is allowed to write a review of a film that he or she worked on in any capacity.
However, if a writer genuinely responds to a film made by someone else on the HTN team, this is fair game.
We are here to primarily write about low-budget, under-the-radar films that might otherwise slip through the cracks, and to exclude a film from consideration for these tenuous reasons seems to betray the mission of our site. Our friendships with and connections to individuals within the indie film world shouldn’t be crosses to bear. If anything, they are proof that we are engaged and involved participants in this community. If you think this is all some incestuous circle jerk, read my review of Treeless Mountain or David Lowery’s review of Silent Light or Cullen Gallagher’s review of Billy the Kid.
We love movies, and we’re here to write about them.

Body: I'm not sure that I could watch a movie with a live-action wonder woman. It might feel too ridiculous. I know Captain America will have his day in the sun in The First Avenger: Captain America and another movie, The Avengers, will be arriving a few months following that features "other Marvel Heroes" as stated in the synopsis. I wonder if Wonder Woman will be one them. :) I have no idea who I would choose to be Wonder Woman, especially if it was going to be someone who had no exposure to Hollywood. I imagine there are lots of beautiful woman with brown hair, fair skin, and a sizable bust who could fill the part.
Body:
Even though some of last year’s Comic-Con secrets were leaked to the web ahead of time, the 2007 SDCC was a huge deal as far as revelations go. Whether it was the unveiling of Karen Allen’s involvement in Indiana Jones and the Then-Still-Not-Subtitled Fourth Installment or cast updates for Watchmen and Star Trek or a bit of clarification on what the hell that Cloverfield movie was, Comic-Con 2007 left us super excited and highly anticipatory for the next year of movie releases.
But after a quick glance, the 2008 convention doesn’t seem like it will have as many big announcements. There should be plenty of new footage shown from movies like Watchmen (making its second Comic-Con round) and The Spirit (hopefully there’s some better looking stuff than the most recent trailer gave us), but what secrets are set to be let out of the bag?
Here’s 10 things I hope they reveal over the next few days:

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in Terminator Salvation - If this really happens, I’ll be flabbergasted. But a guy can hope, at least for official word on a cameo. And there’s no better place than Comic-Con for a confirmation to happen. Well, I guess if Warner Bros. could keep it a secret until the movie opens next May, then that would actually be better. But that’s impossible nowadays.

Everyone’s back for Spider-Man 4 - I despise Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, and I’m not even a big fan of the Spider-Man franchise, so I’m not exactly sure why I’d like both them and director Sam Raimi to return for the fourth installment. I guess I’m just not a fan of changing horses midstream, either. Anyway, I hope there’s some sort of news about the sequel from Sony. Maybe a confirmation of either Almost Famous kid, Patrick Fugit or Michael Angaro?
Abe Vigoda is Gargamel in The Smurfs - Another cast update I’d like to find out from the Sony panel (Saturday evening, check out the liveblogging here at 5:30pm PT). I know he’s probably too old, but can you think of anyone better to play the Smurf-hater?
Tropic Thunder is funny beyond the trailer - One of my greatest fears is that Tropic Thunder is yet another comedy from which all the best jokes — such as Robert Downey Jr. being in blackface — are in the trailer. Once people have seen the whole film at Comic-Con, I’ll know whether or not to bother with it.
Ant-Man’s release date and Simon Pegg stars - I don’t think Edgar Wright will have time to direct his script, but the next best thing will be for Simon Pegg to at least star as the tiny titular Avenger. This really should have already been fast-tracked for a superhero-lacking summer 2009 release, so maybe if we’re lucky, Marvel Studios can tell us that it now has been. Oh wait, Marvel’s sitting this year out, so I guess that means no news about Ant-Man or news about casting Thor or Captain America or The Avengers. Wow. Lame. Boo.
The Spirit might not actually suck - As I noted above, so far The Spirit looks like crap. I want to learn a few good reasons, whether in response to new footage or otherwise, that it might not actually be crap.
Troma plans more Shakespeare adaptations - Everyone’s excited that Karina will be covering the Troma panel, though I’d be a little more excited if I thought the company might be planning another raunchy version of the Bard’s work, like my favorite Troma film, Tromeo and Juliet. They’ll probably just be giving a peak at their fall release, Dr. Fugazzi, which stars a very low-fallen Faye Dunaway.
Fraggle Rock will not exclude the Doozers - The Fraggle panel is Sunday (2:45pm PT), and as a huge Muppet fan, I’m psyched to learn anything about the feature film spin-off. All I know so far is that it involves the main Fraggles (Boober, Wembley, Red, Gobo and Mokey) as they wander out into the real world (they got past Sprocket!). I just hope there’s an announcement that they bring a long at least one Doozer for the adventures. Because I love Doozers. And because that would be some huge announcement, right? Umm.
At least one other DC Comics superhero is finally getting a movie - We can make fun of Warner Bros. and DC for dragging their feet compared to all the Marvel movie adaptations going on this decade, but the fact is, with The Dark Knight we’ve seen that the WB is capable of giving us the best superhero movie of all time (at least according to critical ratings, IMDb voters and box office receipts), so if they want to be slow about it, all the power to them. But can we just get one revelation of another DC superhero movie that isn’t about Batman or Superman?
Scud: The Disposable Assassin: The Movie - With the ’90s comic book series finally revitalized this year, I’m all kinds of excited about my favorite comic character of all time. I don’t care if it’s a 3-D CG-animated feature or live-action, but I want a movie already. Please tell me someone has optioned it since Oliver Stone failed to get an adaptation off the ground.

Is Cameron Diaz playing Lt. Ilia in J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie? Or trying out for the part of Moondragon in Marvel’s Avengers movie? No, she’s simply gone bald for New Line’s weepie drama My Sister’s Keeper. In the film, she plays the mother of a girl suffering from leukemia. And when her daughter suffers hair loss from chemotherapy, she shaves her own head in support.
Though I’m not sure if Diaz is actually shaved here or just wearing a bald cap, I’m hoping that either way little Dakota Fanning sees these photos (for more, head here). You may recall that the 14-year-old primadonna dropped out of the film because she didn’t want to shave her head. Well, Dakota, how’s it feel to be shown up by Cameron Diaz? I know, she’s hardly one to seem worried about her image (she’s brilliantly unattractive in Being John Malkovich), but still, no bad-skin paparazzi shots have made her look as frightening as this picture.
P.S. According to these additional shots from the set, your replacement, Sofia Vassilieva, doesn’t seem all that happy to be bald. But at least she’s going to get that sympathetic Oscar nomination. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog
Body:
X-Men Origins: Wolverine does look pretty cool! I can't wait. I know they're making another X-Men Origins, but I can't remember about who.
I can't wait for both of them. Origins: Wolverine should be pretty amazing with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool. And I haven't heard too much more about Magneto, but Ian McKellen is always incredible and I hope they tie in his children Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch since they are more than likely going to be in or at least mentioned in The Avengers movie.

Spout Post: Beast or Nightcrawler is in Magneto Spin-Off

Body: There’s been a lot of talk lately about all the mutant cameos appearing in the X-Men spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but we haven’t heard much about any characters set to show up in the other spin-off, X-Men Origins: Magneto. Until now. According to George “El Guapo” Roush at The Latino Review, the Magneto film will feature either Beast or Nightcrawler. The uncertainty over which lies in the fact that, while on a visit to a creature effects shop, Roush saw a photo (or rendering) of a blue-costumed character who he was told is a young Beast (played by Kelsey Grammar in X-Men: The Last Stand). Yet the character is described by Roush as having a tail, which suggests that the effects person was mistaken and that it’s really a young Nightcrawler (played by Alan Cumming in X2: X-Men United). Roush has printed an update acknowledging the Nightcrawler possibility but doesn’t understand why the effects guy would have had it wrong.

Of course, fans of the Marvel comic books should see the greater logic of having Nightcrawler (aka Kurt Wagner) in the film, as he and Magneto both originally come from Germany. Plus, there might then be room for a cameo from Mystique (played by Rebecca Romijn in the film series), who happens to be Nightcrawler’s mom. Featuring a young Beast, on the other hand, has no relevance except for in the whole mutant-human relations aspect. Plus, if he shows up in Magneto, he probably won’t get to show up in The Avengers, as I’ve suggested. After all, Marvel Studios really needs to intro Magneto’s kids, who grow up to be Avengers members Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and there’s really no need to have toooo much crossing-over going on.
Anyway, I guess we’ll just have to wait a bit to find out which character is actually appearing in Magneto (if Marvel had wanted the info out already, it would have announced it, right?). For now, we can only damn Marvel for creating so many blue-skinned/furred characters.
