Plot: Independent filmmaker Jeff Mahaffy chronicles a few days in the life of a man whose life is beginning to fall apart in this cinema verite-influenced drama. Thomas Lindsey (Jeff Clark) is a middle-aged salesman who collects abandoned insect nests when he isn't on the road trying to drum up sales. Lindsey has dumped most of his life's savings into a new product called Wellness, a health supplement that claims to cure nearly all physical and emotional ailments. Wellness is being marketed like a pyramid scheme, and Lindsey's overseer is Paul Stubbs (Paul Mahaffy), who bullies his charges into bigger sales and treats Lindsey with barely disguised contempt. As Lindsey desperately tries to convince people to buy into the new wonder drug, Stubbs begins scaring away the few customers he can attract as Lindsey finds himself on the verge of financial ruin. Body: 2008 was not the banner year that ‘07 turned out to be, but there were still plenty of movies worth watching. Sometimes end-of-year lists look like straight Oscar predictions, with little deviance from critic to critic, not so this year. Some of our favorite stuff was not playing in a theatre near you, some of it was. For the record, our complete lists are after the jump. But first! Wholphin 7 is out now! The geniuses over at McSweeny’s have once again curated a delightful collection of rare and unseen short films. We share our thoughts about a few favorites. It was made with almost no money, shot on a handheld camera with natural light, and the non-actor cast was not working from a script. While many films that fit this description never leave the territory of Gen-Y narcissism, Wellness takes a different tack, examining several days in the life of a middle-aged pyramid scheme salesman. Like many films of its ilk, it nails awkward social situations with laser precision, but the value of Wellness doesn’t stop there.
