<strong>Title:</strong> 2012<br/>
<strong>Year:</strong> 2009<br/>
<strong>Director:</strong> Roland Emmerich<br/>
<strong>Plot:</strong> Disaster movie maven <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P____88961/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Roland Emmerich</a> (<a href="http://www.spout.com/films/93431/detail.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Independence Day</a>, <a href="http://www.spout.com/films/222036/detail.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>The Day After Tomorrow</a>) crafts this apocalyptic sci-fi thriller following an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe, making contact with his double in an effort to prevent the catastrophic prophecies of the ancient Mayan calendar from coming to pass. According to the Mayan calendar, the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. When a global cataclysm thrusts the world into chaos, divorced writer and father Jackson Curtis (<a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P____16329/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>John Cusack</a>) uses his knowledge of the ancient prophecies to ensure that the human race is not completely wiped out. <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P___272779/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Chiwetel Ejiofor</a>, <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P____27278/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Danny Glover</a>, <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P___215968/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Amanda Peet</a>, <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P____52472/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Thandie Newton</a>, and <a href="http://www.spout.com/players/P____57054/default.aspx" style='text-decoration:underline'>Oliver Platt</a> round out the cast of this end-of-the-world thriller co-scripted by the director and his 10,000 B.C. writer/composer, Harald Kloser. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> In a good way. If you're looking for deep, meaningful, intellectual entertainment, this isn't the film for you. It is, however, a well-paced, entertaining disaster movie.
As always with Emmerich films, the special effects are fantastic. Where he surpasses his previous work is in the pacing of 2012 as well as the apocalyptic scope of THIS disaster. Instead of a big special effects intro that peters out into the human part of the story, Emmerich balances the human story and the disaster all the way through 2012. Call me sick, but I find something very satisfying in watching the entire city of Las Vegas tumble into a gaping red maw of fault line.
The details of the plot require a certain suspension of disbelief, to be sure, but the acting and dialogue are plausible in context. The film also makes an everyman-style attempt to ask some moral questions regarding who lives and who dies. Ultimately, it's accessible film making.
I can be as much a movie snob as the next person, and of course, my next movie night will be The Road, but for sheer entertainment, sometimes I just don't want to think too much and enjoy watching lots of really big stuff blow up in a really big way.
2012 blows up really, really well.

<strong>Body:</strong> In 2012, cataclysmic earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves send John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton racing across the globe toward a modern-day Noah&rsquo;s ark. Director Roland Emmerich says he was inspired by the ancient Mayan doomsday prophecy and other jittery theories as he prepared to go back to the future. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m glad every two years visual effects take a leap forward,&rdquo; says the disaster master. &ldquo; But it all starts with a concept, not effects.&rdquo; And that concept is? &ldquo; The characters have to get aboard a ship or they&rsquo;re dead. The government people all know what&rsquo;s happening and have moral discussions about whether they&rsquo;re doing the right thing. John Cusack plays one of the people who don&rsquo;t know, and he views the disasters as a way to reconcile his life. Then there&rsquo;s Woody Harrelson, the crazy guy in the middle who thinks it&rsquo;s all about spaceships. There&rsquo;s a balance between intimate scenes, action and laughs, and people who&rsquo;ve seen it told me they cried. That balance doesn&rsquo;t work every time; this time it really does.&rdquo; Download HERE<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> I didnt dare buy a pirated cd of it coz i really planned to watch it on the big screen! And now, my long wait paid off. . id been waiting for this movie for almost 3 months already and finally it's dominating the cinemas now! blockbuster, i should say! it was my 1st time to watch a movie alone. . sad? yeah. . but i was wrong.. coz i realized lately, it's fun to watch alone. . much focused on the movie..rather than entertaining a companion. . It's a story of grief, love, sacrifice, heroism, bit of humor. . perfect for a family. . i cried twice coz i can't imagine myself saying good-bye to ur loved ones and having a devastating end.. i have to admit..the first part was boring for me but it became intense as it went on. . it was really frightening. . conscience-bothering. . and mind-disturbing. . dont know if we have to believe it..but one thing is for sure..this world will end. . People caused this catastrophe that's why we are tasked to cease our wrongdoings. .reawaken. . therefore CHANGE! act now. . Maybe that was the reason why the movie ended happily, still. . Just maybe, we can still do something about it.. We might not know what's really in store for us.. who knows the story might be true or not. . that's why.. WE WERE WARNED.. pray hard fellows..make time. . see for yourself and you'll not regret it!<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> I have seen the movie yesterday and didn't like it that much. It seemed pretty fake to me like, the hundreds of meteors falling out of the sky just when they were talking about the end of the world! Though if you dont look at how silly some parts are the movie would be a good one to pick in the cinema near you. Roland's "The Day After Tomorrow" is still MY favorite and I highly recommend it.<br/>

<strong>Body:</strong> It was many moons ago when they came for us out of the blue. Their giant spaceships rained down from the Heavens and we finally had an answer to the question of whether or not we were alone. However, we quickly learned that these otherworldly visitors were no friends of mankind. In what has been verified as the greatest aerial battle in the history of mankind--we turned back our alien oppressors on Independence Day.

How experts missed this danger is beyond me...

Then, years later, we were told that the world we knew, the planet we take for granted like a dime-store hooker, was not going to take our bullshit anymore. In what historians are calling the "Day After Tomorrow" (two days from now) event; the citizenry of much of the world had to evade frost as though it were an advancing predator. Scientists were ignored, hippies disregarded, and the common people paid the price for our ignorance. We will never again forget what a bitch mother nature can really be...

A pleasant spring day in downtown Manhattan

If only we were not so blind, we would have seen that the 'hurricane frost' and 'Anti-American Aliens' were only the tip of the iceberg. You see, everyone with the internet knows that the real problem we are ignoring is the oncoming end of the world on December 21st, 2012. When the Mayan calendar completes it cycle--so do we. (Copyright, Movies with Minjoe.)

This guy totally saw it all coming

'2012,' represents director Roland Emmerich's third attempt at destroying the planet. Looking beyond the obvious 'mom issues' that lead him to make these apocalyptic films, is...difficult. As per usual, he assembles a large cast of talented actors and then completely wastes them by forcing them to utter the most trivial, worthless dialouge you can imagine. Long gone is the wittiness and timing of "Independence Day" only to be replaced by cheesiness and ridiculousness galore. Each scene that has good emotion, or depth, is quickly preempted by another horrific death or disaster--gee, thanks Roland...

"Ok, CUT! This is boring--lets just move on to his decapitation via solar flare."
-R. Emmerich

The film follows several groups of people, including scientists working for the government, politicians, conspiracy theorists (Woody Harrelson is again top notch playing a white trash character), and, of course, The Curtis Family (John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and two kids no one cares about). The family is your typical American household with mom &amp; dad divorced, new dad at home with mom, kids caught in the middle, and everyone coming off as slightly upset and pissy at all times.

Mommy is banging someone else now--deal with it.

To be perfectly honest, giving you the cast list and who is doing what is a complete waste of your time and mine. This movie has absolutely zero to do with the characters. The actors in this film could be removed from the final-cut and you might not notice all that much of a difference. You can feel Emmerich trying to build emotion, concern, and empathy within the audience--but the steady chorus of giggles throughout the film proved that he completely failed in his endeavor. Make no mistake, this movie is about the CGI. Period.

"Congrats to Roland Emmerich on making a film almost as ridiculous as the drivel I continue to churn out."
-Michael Bay

Films that come out these days seem to be an effort to take CGI to the next level--at the expense of strong character work. '2012' was never destined to be an Oscar winner, but it could have been an interesting sociological study as to how mankind reacts to the end of days. Instead, it made such important philosophical questions background noise to the incredible visuals. The scenes in this movie are visually stunning and I'm amazed by how far CGI has come in the last several years. However, using such amazing work to show someone driving a car through a falling skyscraper, or pilot a plane in the middle of a caldera eruption, doesn't exactly strike me as the best use of the technology.

More focus on this (In full IMAX HD) Less focus on CGI = Win.

In the end, I really don't have a lot to say about 2012 because my expectations were minuscule and the film pretty much lived up to what I thought it would be. I could go on about the strange absence of religious &amp; societal ramifications that were ignored, the terrible science, plot points that made no sense, and 'serious' moments that had me laughing to the point of tears--but what would be the point? If you go see this movie, you'll be wasting 2 hours and 4o minutes of your time...I don't wish to add to that total.

<strong>Body:</strong>
I wanted to go and watch a nice end of the world movie, 2012, only to realize that it was a continuation of the themes that have flooded out TV (but not only..) media in the past months. In a nutshell, 2012 teaches us:
- the world is going to end on the 21st of December of 2012. They devote a few minutes to explain why. Zero time to explain how come that the Maya knew about it way before us. Not important, I guess
- Obama is a good president that is trying to save the world. But with a twist! The African-American president, which is Obviously Obama since we are in 2009, dismisses the white aide to listen to the much more human and knowledgeable two African-American colleagues. This is just a beginning, and there is a big twist!
- Since Obama is such a big character to be supported by a single actor, it is intelligently spread across several characters, namely:
-- obviously, the president, from now on O1, that unlike the one in "the day after tomorrow" has a big heart and loves humankind. Unfortunately, he dies, but wait for the twist!
-- Obama has a 20 something years old supermodel daughter, which ends up flirting with the reincarnation of Obama (see below)
-- The main scientist of the movie, Chiwitel Ejiofor, also African-American, who saves the world with the help of his friend in India, despite the white-white house mean character. I will call this Obama2 The Revenge (O2-TR)
- O2-TR is deeply socialist. He does not want the "normal" people to perish in the disaster, and he publicly declares it on screen, but at the same time does not propose a viable alternative. This leaves the mean white guy carte blanche to build the arks that are supposed to save humankind. Where do they build these arks??!!
- YES! In China! I assume that they did a public race to various companies to find the best offer, and the Chinese were obviously the cheaper option.... I guess that the quality of the ark is not that important, right?
- Now, how do you build a bunch of hi-tech arks in a few years? You combine public and private money, I guess. People could buy a seat on the arc for 1B Euro (many of the seats were taken by O1 friends at Bank of America, but this is not in the movie, just a speculation). The message is that without all this private money nothing could have been done. This leaves out a bunch of normal people that cannot afford a 1B Euro, such as all the people in the movie theater with me, which stared to sweat hard and think how unfair is life, and that they should get a better paying job starting on Monday so they can afford the billion (actually, in dollars, it's 1.5, be sure you keep this in mind in when you negotiate you 3-year-long 401K).
- Anyway, in the apex scene of the movie, O2-TR gets on the stage and delivers what is the equivanet of the 2008 O1 speech in Berlin. O2-TR skillfully reliefs the movie audience by convincing the other world leaders, all of them in the ark(s), to let the normal people in... O2-TR saves the normal people!
- Now, as any good socialist scheme, it is not well thought off: O2-TR's plan causes a catastrophe which would have been surely resulted in the death of everybody in the ark, wouldn't the director of the movie save them out of pity. In the meantime, O2-TR gains some more screen time and popularity by doing some nonsensical, untimely, and completely inappropriate action on the screen (such as helping to rescue a dog, medicating people here and there), while the other big boys try to remedy to the O2-TR caused disaster. \
- Importantly, O2-TR did not buy a ticket. Despite O2-TR claimed that it was unfair that only people that can afford a ticket can get on the ark (wow... now, next time you go on a cruise, or buy a car, or even get a drink, you should think about people who cannot afford it...), he forgets to reply to the legitimate question of the evil white guy "why don't you give out your ticket"? O1's daughter, soon to be O2-TR finance (incest?), forgets to respond too.
- As an aside, O2-TR and O1's supermodel daughter did not pay for the ticket, but were willing to use other people's resources and give it away for free (wait, where did I hear this before?...)
- Also, they forget to assess how an ark that is supposed to hold X number of people for Y days can now support 2X...well, just details, I guess, cannibalism would have eventually solved this issue.
- Now, are you ready??? What is the only continent that is spared by God's fury and emerges from the water as the new promised land? AFRICA!!! Yes! All 1st world countries have been wiped away, and finally the 4th world countries will rule the world!

If this is not ridiculous enough, my prime minister Berlusconi (yes, I am Italian) refuses to go and save himself on the ark to stay and pray at the Vatican. Come on!!!!
