Title: Bride Wars
Year: 2009
Director: Gary Winick
Plot: A clerical error tests the lifelong friendship of two brides-to-be by scheduling their respective weddings at the famed Plaza Hotel on the exact same date in this romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson. Ever since they were little girls, Liv (Hudson) and Emma (Hathaway) have bonded over planning their weddings down to the very last detail. Now, both in their mid-twenties, Liv and Emma have each found the men they want to spend the rest of their lives with. But while most of the details regarding their respective weddings don't overlap, the one thing that both Liv and Emma have always dreamt of is holding their ceremony at the legendary Plaza Hotel -- New Your City's ultimate bridal destination. Unfortunately, a simple clerical error has scheduled both of their weddings on the exact same date, at the exact same place. As a high-powered lawyer who's used to getting her way, Liv simply isn't willing to settle for anything less than perfection. And though simple schoolteacher Emma has always placed the needs of others above her own, the prospect of making any sacrifices on her big day brings out her inner bridezilla in ways that shock her unsuspecting friends and family. There was a time when Liv and Emma would have done anything for each other, but now that the two best friends are at odds over who will get their dream wedding and who will have to settle for second best, the lacy gloves are off and it's all-out war. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Body:
I've finally reached that age where it seems all of my friends are getting married. The ceremonies are fun: watching my buddies committing their lives to a person they love, but what is even better is when there is an open bar and a decently catered meal. Wedding Crashers was a hilarious film based almost entirely on this notion. Knowing my friends, I'm surprised that none of them have had one of those spur of the moment weddings in Las Vegas at a 24 hour chapel with an Elvis impersonator like in What Happens In Vegas and Love Stinks. Speaking of Vegas, there are a lot of movies featuring the pre-wedding bachelor party going there and everything running amuck like in Very Bad Things. But don't get me wrong, those intimate family weddings following years of tradition are cool too. With kilts and bagpipes, Mike Myers has a traditional Scottish wedding in So I Married An Axe Murderer; Mira Nair showed us the ups and downs of an arranged Indian marriage in Monsoon Wedding; and of course Disney has perverted the minds of millions of young girls by making them believe that fairy tale weddings like in Enchanted, etc are the only way to get married (which has resulted in films like Bride Wars when everything doesn't go right).
I'm looking through this list and realizing that movies that feature heavily on weddings tend to turn me off. I'm not sure why exactly. I'll have to do some soul searching. But has anyone ever seen The Ruling Class? That features what is probably one of the funniest at the alter scenes I've ever watched. Between Alastair Sim and Peter O'Toole I was just doubled over!
Body: Today’s clip isn’t exactly film-related, but it does tie into Kevin’s list from earlier about unsuccessful movie prophecies. Plus, its title somewhat references Back to the Future, and anything paying tribute to BTTF immediately sparks my interest (this tie-in may have even influenced my vote for president). The comedy short comes from FunnyorDie.com and stars Paul Scheer of Human Giant (and Bride Wars, just to make this more movie-related) in two roles. One role, really, but its divided into two parts, “Alex” and “Future Alex.” And the whole thing is a play on the idea of fashions of the future.
Anyway, the video made me think of the Oscars’ usual ignorance of science-fiction costumes, particularly of designs for films set in the future (meaning Star Wars‘ win in the category was apparently okay). Why wasn’t Jean-Paul Gaultier nominated for The Fifth Element? And what about Milena Canonero for A Clockwork Orange? Of course, even more disappointing than those snubs was the failure to nominate Joanna Johnston for Back to the Future Part II, a film so visionary in its futuristic fashions that fans campaigned to have Nike produce a pair of sneakers similar to those seen in the movie. Maybe we won’t have self-drying clothes in 6 years, but what a great concept and what a great execution of that idea in Marty McFly’s jacket. Much better work than anything seen in Driving Miss Daisy, that’s for sure.
If only we could go back in time and change the Academy’s mind.

Body: Funny enough, but about what you'd expect from a comedy released around this time of year. Orange County was the only movie released in early January that's worth a damn, and it was no Duck Soup. Hathaway proves that she's a better actress than Hudson, even in the comedy realm. Who would want to marry Hudson, anyway? She temporarily ruined the lives of her past 2 men (Black Crowes' frontman Chris Robinson and Owen Wilson). The script draws enough laughs throughout (sample Hathaway line: "Mother Eff!"), but the character development needs more, err.., development if the ending is to be taken seriously. Feel free to wait until a video release, or, if you're like me and live in a small town with $4.50 evening shows, it's not a bad date night film.
Body: I'm a little disappointed but not all that surprised to hear Unborn wasn't any good. I kind of had high hopes for it, based mostly on the film poster. I did find a few lists of "films we're looking forward to" in 2009, but unfortunately they seemed to mostly be re-hashing familiar themes...

I don't know about you guys, but its one week in and 2009 is looking like another banner year for the Worst Movie Ever discussion fodder. So far, we have Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), where even the "making of" scenes were painful to watch. Karina, always the cynic, seems to agree as well with her latest blog post. And c'mon, Marley and Me is the top film? Followed by Bride Wars? Really? Ugh. I have a feeling this is going to be another disappointing year. Anyone else think so? Or are there any rays of light at the end of the dark tunnel that is the 2009 film year?
Have you seen Mark Kermode's review of "Bride Wars" on YouTube? It's pretty hysterical. I made the mistake of seeing The Unborn on Friday night. Pretty stinking awful. But hey, It's January. We've hit the lull period before things start to get interesting. I'm not prepared to give up hope yet. It's just not gonna be much fun to review movies for a couple of months.
Body: When the omniscient wedding planner (Candice Bergen) begins her droll narration of the film, the audience knows they are in for a truly tainted treat. Examining the deprave and ultimately ludicrous nature of modern day weddings, Bride Wars follows two lifelong friends, Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway), as they find themselves engaged at the same time and competing to one up the other as their nuptials have been accidentally scheduled for the exact same time and place. As the severity of the pranks pulled on one another increases, the hilarity takes heed and vanishes until all that remains is a rather trite attempt at conveying the boring power of true friendship. Body: I don't know about you guys, but its one week in and 2009 is looking like another banner year for the Worst Movie Ever discussion fodder.
Body: It looks like Hellraiser was delayed again, but don't worry -- there's another horror movie coming out called Bride Wars. 1. Bride Wars: Bridezilla vs. Mothranne (NEW) -- Watch the trailer. A monster movie starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. Not to be confused with the following movies. I wish we had the trailers! War Brides (1916) G.I. War Brides (1946) Atomic War Bride (1960) I Was a Male War Bride (1949) Hercules: The Legendary Journeys -- War Bride (1997) 2. The Unborn -- Watch the trailer. Gary Oldman stars as an exorcist, and the screenplay is from the writer of Batman Begins and Blade II. Okay, I'm interested. Not to be confused with Roger Corman's The Unborn (1991) -- Watch the trailer. The tagline: "Having a baby can be a scream." 3. Not Easily Broken -- Watch the trailer. Hard times put a marriage to the test. Not to be confused with Brokeback Mountain. Watch the trailer.
Body: I’m still catching up on RSS feeds after a week away, but as movie blog talk increasingly moves towards Oscar prognostication (because what else are we gonna talk about between now and Sundance –– Bride Wars?), I’m noticing a sort of two-headed theme emerge in the last week of the year. One the one hand: While Slumdog Millionaire, Milk and Benjamin Button all have their fans, no one seems crazy enough about the front-runners for the final two best picture slots (Frost/Nixon, Doubt and, um … Revolutionary Road? Maybe?) to label any of them as a lock; on the other: this year, to be contrarian seems to be equivalent to being populist.

Factors A + B first resulted in a mostly-online push for a Best Picture nomination for The Dark Knight. It might have seemed laughable before the movie opened (a comic-book cape flick blockbuster annointed for all time as one of the five best films of the year? Please!), but the campaign has gathered so much steam that the film’s worthiness is now a non-issue; in fact, it’s currently comfortably lodged within the top five on the Gurus of Gold predictions chart at Movie City News.
If it worked once, maybe it could work again. And thus, we find bloggers like Kris Tapley and Jessica Coen putting their weight behind a Wall-E Best Picture nod; AJ Schnack arguing that Man on Wire, one of the most popular and crowd-pleasing documentaries in years (not to mention the best reviewed film in any genre of this year) deserves the same; and, most interesting to me, David Carr arguing that Iron Man is more deserving of the Best Picture slot that may have already been ceded to The Dark Knight.
I still haven’t seen Wall-E (I know, I know), but I could definitely get behind an Oscar fight between Iron Man and Man on Wire. Both films would have made my 2008 top 20 for sure, and either would be a less embarrassing film to laud than Benjamin Button.
So what say you? What popular successes do you deem more worthy of a Best Picture nod than this year’s crop of humdrum prestige pictures? Originally posted on:SpoutBlog » Karina Longworth
