Body: Duplicity (2009) is forgettable. You’d expect it to make an impression because with Tony Gilroy at the helm (Jason Bourne movies; Michael Clayton) and a fleet of top-notch actors . . . But even if we grant that it is a romantic caper film and not supposed to be substantial, it is still not a particularly good romantic caper film. Why?

Take the romantic part. Even though Clare (Julia Roberts) and Ray (Clive Owens) have some on-screen chemistry, what is the basis of their attraction? We don’t know. They are both professionals who lie for a living and work in the unsavoury field of corporate espionage. Should we care about them?

Take the caper part. We don’t know until well into the movie that there is a caper. At first it seems like industrial espionage; then, through a series of flash backs, we see that Clare and Ray are trying to pull a fast one. When the caper comes to a conclusion, it’s not what you expected. But this surprise ending is a cheat: You were given no hints, no chance to figure it out yourself. It was simply sprung on you, making it all that much more forgettable.
Body: I have tried to watch this three times now, it is SO boring! Not even the ruggish good looks of Clive Owen or Julia Roberts trade mark smile can save this movie!
The plot is hard to follow and when you can make out what's happening you realise it's not the slightest bit interesting.
Avoid.
Body: Viewers were probably supposed to be captivated by the as the story plot is revealed and compelled to figure out who is really being conned (by whom) and the real reasons why. Unfortunately, the movie is so difficult to follow and generally boring that half way through, you will conclude that it isn't worth the effort.
Duplicity distills corporate espionage, super secret agents, and romance down to something as exciting as a discussion of the differences between lotion and crème through the cunning use of bad acting, tedious dialogue and sleepy visuals.
Ray Koval (Clive Owen) and Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) were spies for the British and American governments, respectively. They abandon their government spy games for the seedy world of corporate surveillance. They take the chance of a lifetime by taking dueling CEO’s Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) and Richard Garsik (Paul Giamatti) for a financial ride. A strong but supporting role, Champagne has a mountainous amount of screen time playing itself.
There is a serious case of “actor playing self” in Duplicity. Champagne appears, bubbly and expensive, at every opportunity to celebrate or lamentation. Clive Owen plays the handsome and rugged, but not well put together tough-guy. Tom Wilkinson, the stiff upper lipped British guy. Paul Giamatti plays a loud mouthed, over egoed, windbag. Julia Roberts plays the beautiful, intelligent woman in love with the rugged and handsome, but not well put together tough-guy. The actors in Duplicity had as much problem finding their character as genius would have with a four piece puzzle.
Julia Roberts can’t even act herself well. Just because you have red hair does not mean you are a carrot, nor does it mean you are in anyway related to a rabbit but she does her best to channel the Cadbury Bunny in Duplicity. It is most kindly described as an extended facial seizure. Her face twitches so often, a well placed drink would make James Bond a martini, just the way he likes it. The only blessing of this unrelenting cheek and lip shivering is that distracts from everything else on screen or in the ear.
There is nothing interesting or repulsive about the way Duplicity is shot. It is remarkable only in its mediocrity. Scenes rich with opportunities for heart-pounding excitement instead employ copy machines, blue prints, and printers. Let’s not forget how often Champagne is on screen. It seems we cannot go more than five minutes without seeing yet another bottle of champagne, two glasses and another tedious reason not to drink it.
The fact that bubbly booze is a main character is a testament to the dime store quality writing in Duplicity. The dialogue is difficult to listen to at all stages of the film. The ending is totally foreseeable to anyone above age 15 with half a brain. The characters trip over their stupidity but have been able to function in high level jobs, requiring higher cognitive function than the average burger-flipper. There was no shortage of lines that made me want to commit suicide by eating my own shoe; lines I will not share with my readers because I can’t bear to transmit these bastardizations of language; these memes of brain cell death.
Duplicity is a perfect example what happens when a writer and director are the same person and substandard at both, left with no oversight. Tony Gilroy, the writer and director of Duplicity, was left to his vices and smeared his addiction to his laziness all over the audience. It would be reasonable to expect even minimal quality from actors of the caliber employed in Duplicity but instead, poor writing and direction encouraged an overall decline in quality of all aspects of this movie.
Duplicity should be renamed Dull-plicity. Tony Gilroy, I demand a refund of my time.

Body: NEW to THEATERS 3/17 I Love You, Man -- Watch trailer. Aww, lok at that hug . . . That's what I want to do to Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, along with the rest of the stars (Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, and The Office's Rashida Jones). With all of those people, how can this movie go wrong? If you still think it could go wrong, I recommend you rent the exact opposite of this movie; and as far as I can tell, the exact opposite is P.S., I Love You, which stars Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank (watch trailer). Duplicity -- Watch trailer. Clive Owen and Julia Roberts are corporate spies who team up to pull off the ultimate con. Uh oh, can they trust each other??? This reminds me of the old screwball comedies with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Only I'm not so sure this is going to be as good as a Howard Hawks movie . . . Oh well, this could still entertain. (P.S., Duplicity is not a sequel to Multiplicity, which stars Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell, so if you're not in the mood for a spy movie, watch Multiplicity again (watch trailer). The Great Buck Howard (limited) -- Watch trailer. A law school dropout (Colin Hanks) becomes assistant to a has-been magician (John Malkovich). Al-riiiiiight, Emily Blunt and Steve Zahn are in it! Plus Colin Hanks' real-life dad (Tom Hanks) plays his movie dad! Sin Nombre (limited) -- Watch trailer. Two desperate Honduran teenagers try to start new lives in the US The tagline is "The greatest sin of all is risking nothing." Hey, isn't that also the tagline of Maverick starring Mel Gibson? (Watch trailer to Maverick.) Super Capers (limited) -- Watch trailer. Another B-grade superhero satire, although unlike Superhero Movie, Super Capers looks like it at least has some heart. The story: a regular guy joins a team of superheroes-in-training. During their first mission, which fails, our hero finds himself framed as the mastermind of the crime. He must clear the name of his team by finding the real villain. Some really entertaining actors fill the minor roles--Jon Polito, Tom Sizemore, Adam West, and Clint Howard (Ron's weird-looking brother)--so this might deliver some worthwhile entertainment. __________________________________________________ BONUS VIDEO: Sylvester Stallone's new muscles are lethal weapons ___________________________________________________ NEW to DVD 3/17 The Duchess -- Watch trailer. This is the kind of thing Keira Knightley is really good at: acting powerful and cute at the same time. Baby Mama -- Watch trailer. Starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler . . . which is pretty much all you need to know. FilmCouch's Kevin Buist says it's good, although it doesn't allow the two enough time to improv. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People -- Watch trailer. I've heard it's okay, but it didn't really live up to anyone's potential. Speaking of Simon Pegg movies, I've heard The Good Night is pretty good, and I'm looking forward to the sexy reincarnation of Star Trek. Faust -- Watch trailer. This 1926 silent epic from W. F. Murnau (the guy who gave us Nosferatu) looks like it's a truly mind-bending experience. Punisher: War Zone -- Watch trailer. Punisher reboot #2. I miss Dolph Lundgren; I guess you don't know what you got 'til it's gone . . .
F. Body:
I'm not going to vote, having only seen Michael Clayton, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed that film and felt it is certainly a worthy contender in that category. All performances was brilliant, and the story, while hectic, maintained its coherency beginning to end. I'm not a huge Clooney fan, and especially was skeptical of his potential performance given the role of his character, but wow... he knocked it out of the water. Surely a sign of a great director.
Looking at Tony Gilroy's resume, he has primarily been a screenwriter for nearly the past two decades. This was his first attempt at directing that is listed on IMDB. He was a writer on the adaptations of all the Bourne movies recently. And he also recently completed a movie that will be coming out next year called Duplicity with a lot of big name actors. Do you think this guy has a bright future?
With the fate of Heath Ledger’s final projects up in the air, Variety takes a look at some past films that were effected by the sudden deaths of their respective stars. Would Shrek have been as popular with Chris Farley as the voice of the titular ogre? Would Interview With the Vampire be better with River Phoenix? Should Jane Harlow’s final film, Saratoga, have been scrapped?
WGA reps and studio execs enter a second day of informal talks today, which should be more exciting that it feels to me. Maybe it’s because I just read this detail of how badly the writer’s strike is effecting the economy, and now my head hurts.
After confirming that Tony Gilroy had directed him to a second Oscar nomination, Tom Wilkinson has decided to reunite with the Michael Clayton director for the pharmaceutical company drama Duplicity. He is joined by Billy Bob Thornton and joins Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida are now considered a “husband-and-wife team” for writing an original screenplay that Oscar-winner Sam Mendes will direct as a low-budget comedy. Currently untitled, the movie will be about a young couple trying to decide where in the U.S. is best to raise a child. It could be a very short film if the couple just reads the latest issue of Fit Pregnancy magazine.
