Body: Kevin Smith is having title trouble again. After previously dealing with censorship related to the title Zach and Miri Make a Porno, the filmmaker has run into a snag with his next movie, originally called A Couple of Dicks. Warner Bros. has changed the title of the comedy, which will star Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan, to A Couple of Cops, obviously so as not to confuse anyone with the multiple (including the offensive) meanings of “dick.”
But this can’t be the end, because nobody in their right mind would distribute a movie with that new title. I’m pretty sure the word “cops” is poisonous. Has there been a single good movie with that word in the title since Buster Keaton’s 1922 short? Singularly, “cop” will occasionally work, such as in Beverly Hills Cop, Super Cop, Cop Land and Kindergarten Cop. But pluralized, I think the best we’ve seen is Cops and Robbersons. Recall that Hollywood Homicide was once titled “Two Cops,” which is quite like Smith’s movie’s name, but better. And maybe the original title cursed it, because the movie flopped. So, unless A Couple of Cops involves fumbling policemen resembling the Keystone Cops, it’s certain that the studio will need to brainstorm a new name quick, if it’s not already too late. Or, if Smith doesn’t really care about this movie, which he didn’t write and is seemingly only directing for the easy money, perhaps he can ultimately take his own name off and let it be an Alan Smithee film.
Here are some of the negative responses to the name change from around the web:

Vince Mancini at FilmDrunk explains the change:
WB had originally acquired the script not realizing “dick” was a double entendre. Once they found out, they took immediate action, first experimenting with more literal titles such as A Couple of Dicks - Not Penises, This Isn’t That Kind of Movie At All before settling on the newer, shorter name.

Kudos to the A.V. Club for referencing the fake Tracey Jordan movie within 30 Rock titled Black Cop White Cop, and noting that once again life is imitating art: “Variety’s report didn’t mention when we can expect Who Dat Ninja or Fat Bitch in theaters.”
And kudos to the Fark headline for a great Clerks reference: “Warner Bros changes name of Kevin Smith’s new film to ‘A Couple of Cops’, fearing moviegoers might be offended by ‘A Couple of Dicks’. It’s not like there’s 37 of them.” Also, a great discussion in the Fark comments section references both classic and recent titular uses of “dick”: Dick and The Bank Dick.
I also love the headline at The Playlist: “Emasculated: Kevin Smith Loses His ‘Dick’”
“So now how will moviegoers know there are dicks in this movie? By seeing Bruce Willis on the poster?” asks Vulture.
“I mean, we’re all adults here,” write’s Jessica Barnes at Cinematical, “has it really gotten to the point where even a pun as vanilla as a variation on ‘Private Dicks’ is too much for audiences?”
Melanie Addington, of Oxford Film Freak, comments on Barnes’ post:
That doesn’t sound like that would help with any sort of marketing plan. At least A Couple of Dicks may scream, hey, fun Kevin Smith film - fans, come see it. But A Couple of Cops? Why does it sound like Paul Blart: Mall Cop Part 2? Blart Teams Up With Another Cop? Funny antics ensue. Sigh.

Russ Fischer is a bit harsh with his joke at CHUD.com: “A title more limp than Mickey Rourke after the Oscars.”
“Kevin Smith has spent his entire career delivering interesting movies with awesome titles and only a few of us showed up to see them,” writes Josh Tyler, jokingly giving in at Cinema Blend. “Maybe it’s time to give the people what they want, and what the people seem to want is a good nap.”

Body: I should probably start by saying that I am a rabid Kevin Smith fan. This is not to say I think he can do no wrong, but one day I would be more than happy to be as successful as he is today. On small budgets and short, indie style shoots, Smith has acquired a fanbase most directors at his level don't possess. He's turned into that aloof musician that releases an album every few years and you hope it'll be just as good, if not better, than the last. Zack and Miri Make a Porno, while not my all time favorite of his films, delivers on most parts and despite its faults remains a genuinely funny movie.
The film stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as high school friends and roomates who are forced to film a porno in order to make payment on their month's behind bills. The cast is much more high profile than any of Smith's other films, and some might even be mislead to believe it is a Judd Apatow production. That being said, the acting is also of a higher calibur than most of his films. Seth Rogen isn't breaking any ground playing the deadpan, chunky lead, but he fills the shoes well.
As a fellow writer I always look forward to hearing what dialogue will be coming out of Smith's characters next. The outrageous one-liners and vulgar ten minute conversations on God knows what always makes me laugh. He appeals to my baser instincts but also my wit; and I am rewarded for catching his inside geek/dork references (ie. Monroeville Zombies) strewn throughout the movie. I expect no less from Smith, and if nothing else he makes me laugh for an hour and a half.
The weakness of this film seems to lie deep in its plot between the second and third acts. Up until this point the pacing of the movie feels comfortable. Instead of taking another twenty or so minutes to keep the pace going, Smith jumps the timeline ahead three months and resolves most of the conflicts too easily. I have no problem with fairly happy endings in Kevin Smith's films, but this just didn't feel natural and felt more like he took a shortcut to get us to the end of the movie. While this hurts the film, it doesn't mean it makes it unwatchable.
Kevin Smith is the everyman's filmmaker. None of his films have won Oscars (these days I'd take that as a point of pride) and they aren't always deep. They do all manage to make me laugh, and you can still put them above all the poorly made remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, adaptations, and [insert genre here] movie parodies. He's vulgar, dark, witty, and laughably funny. And although Zack and Miri has some mechanical flaws in its bones, it still fits the bill for an entertaining Smith flick.
Body: Zack and Miri Make a Porno might be director Kevin Smith’s most accessible movie to date, even while it also seems like the one that least carries many of Smith’s defining characteristics.
The story takes two childhood friends, Zack and Miri, who have known each other since grade school and who currently live with each other - though in a non-sexual manner - as they find themselves in the middle of a financial problem. With little income and a lot of bills the two find inspiration to their difficulties at a horrendously uncomfortable high school reunion.
That solution? They’ll make a low-budget porno. Hence the movie’s title.
They recruit a hodge-podge of friends to help them make their movie. A co-worker of Zack’s becomes the producer because he’s the only one with money. A high school friend with a video camera becomes the cameraman. And a couple of ladies - portrayed by actual porn stars - become the stars in the movie.
In-between the problems with production that provide much of the movie’s comedy Zack and Miri provide the movie with it’s heart and emotional resonance. These two have known each other for 20+ years and never had a romantic relationship but decide, of course, that it’s going to be the least weird if they have sex on-screen. They just need to convince themselves that it’s not going to impact their friendship. But of course it does and it’s not hard to predict where the story will lead them to.
Zack and Miri doesn’t play like a Kevin Smith movie. By that I mean many of Smith’s verbal ticks are downplayed in the writing, or at least they’re less prevalent in the hands of the actors he’s cast here. While there’s an abundance of jokes about people’s private parts and a huge-honking Star Wars reference, it’s handled a little bit more deftly than is usually the case in his movies. Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, portraying the titular couple, bring their own style to the characters and makes Smith’s dialogue flow in a way that it hasn’t really been able to in prior films. That’s not a knock against them - I’m a huge Smith fan - but it just works on a different level in Zack and Miri than it has previously.
The movie is now available as a two-disc DVD set. On disc one you’ll find just the movie. On disc two you’ll find a wealth of extras, including the “Money Shots” webisodes that were released on line during the film’s production and a collection of bloopers, ad libs and other fun outtakes.
The best part of the extra features, though, is “Popcorn Porn,” an hour-and-a-half documentary that chronicles the film from inception through the much-documented battle over ratings with the MPAA. This is absolutely the best thing (other than the movie) included in the set and I definitely recommend watching it after you watch the feature.

Body: 2/2 -- It's Groundhog Day! Well, the little bugger saw his shadow, so we're in for another six weeks of winter. But he also smelled his own breath, so we're in for some good movies before spring! Not surprisingly, the groundhog wouldn't just come out and say which movies are going to be good--but he did give some short, zen-like predictions. Check 'em out below. 1. Pink Panther 2 -- Watch the trailer. I think Steve Martin is one of the smartest and funniest comedians alive, but each of his new movies makes this a little harder to remember. Don't get me wrong, Pink Panther (2006) is decent slapstick with a handful of especially funny moments. If the sequel is any better, it'll be worth the price of admission. THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "My dandruff is really quite edible." (That means the film may seem off-putting, but is actually pretty good.) 2. He's Just Not that Into You -- Watch the trailer. This looks less like a story than An Evening of Stars Getting Together and Not Getting Together. Have you seen the mash-up video Christian Bale Is Just Not That Into You? THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "I quench my thirst with my own drool." (That means he's attracted to Jennifer Connelly, and laments that, alas, they can never be together. If you wanna have fun or just feel close to Ms. Conelly, Recast DARK CITY.) 3. Fanboys -- Watch the trailer. This movie started a brawl between the badasses of Star Wars and Star Trek. Vote for your favorite characters to help them survive the brawl. Fanboys has been hanging around since 2007, so I'm kind of wary. Nevertheless, it's full of good people (Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler, and Kristin Bell in Princess Leia's golden bikini, yikes!) THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "These darn saddle sores just won't heal!" (He's tired of all the delays, and hopes the film lives up to his expectations. It also means, would I please hand him my lip balm so he can give some relief to his rump?) 4. Coraline -- Watch the trailer. I've read the book by Neil Gaiman and it's pretty good, sort of Alice In Wonderland meets The Nightmare Before Christmas. Hey, that's what the trailer looks like, too! THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "Does a Coal Monster poop diamonds?" (This must be some kind of stock phrase among groundhogs. Do any of you know what it means?) 5. Push -- Watch the trailer. The director of this thriller made Lucky Number Slevin, which was pretty good. On the other hand... THE GROUNDHOG SAYS: "I have blood in my stool." (This is far too vulgar to translate, and he knows better. I kick him lightly in the saddlesores and he scurries back into his hole.) ________________________________________________ NEW TO DVD 2/3 There are a bunch of Friday the 13th special editions coming out, some on Blu-ray. I was thinking about seeing the new Friday the 13th next Friday, but then my appetite for slasher films was ruined by the horrid My Bloody Valentine 3-D. 1. Zack and Miri Make a Porno -- Watch the trailer. Since it stars those two delightful cats--Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks--I'm surprised it bombed so bad in the theater. I haven't seen this yet; any opinions on whether it deserves a look? 2. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist -- Watch the trailer. Don't you just wanna pinch Michael Cera's cheeks? 3. Redbelt -- Watch the trailer. A good but flawed film from David Mamet about honor (and the lack thereof) among professional Tae Kwon Do competitors. I learned from this film that the only belt higher than blackbelt is redbelt...and if I'm not mistaken, there's only one Redbelt at a time. 4. Bottle Shock -- Watch the trailer. Starring Bill Pullman and the superb Alan Rickman, this comedy-drama's set in 1976, within the world of wine-making and wine-tasting. If you've ever been to a wine-tasting, you know there's plenty to make fun of there. The best comments I've ever heard at a wine-tasting. I'm not making these up: (1) It's a bit austere in the mid-nose. (2) Ooh, I'm almost sensing a bit of effervescence that isn't really there! 5. The Secret Life of Bees -- Watch the trailer. Wow, that Dakota Fanning is everywhere these days. Yesterday I saw Dakota down at the DMV, trying to get her driver's license. I'm like, "What do you need that for?" And she's like, "I'm not gonna drive! They're just photographing me! My agent made this deal so that my picture goes on every new photo ID in America." Just an FYI, if you're going to get a license or passport. 6. Assault on Precint 13 (re-release) -- This is one John Carpenter classic I haven't seen. Any opinions of it? 7. Being There (re-release) -- Watch the trailer. I'm a fan of Peter Sellers, but I haven't seen this one. By the way, we're giving it away. Find out how to win.
Body:
After much neglect I am determined to make Trailer Park a more active group. I thought that a Top 10 List of trailers released in 2008 might be an interesting start. The trailers that I have chosen are those elite few that have not only kept my attention but made me gush afterwards about how exciting the film will be once it is released. Not only that, but have sought them out on the internet or on my phone to watch again and share with friends. Here we go: Top 10 Trailers of 2008 10.) Zack and Miri Make a Porno - The title alone made this trailer a must see while cameos by Traci Lords and staples in the Askewniverse and Team Apatow got all the cool kids watching. 9.) The Dark Knight - Everyone was searching for this trailer months before its release due to the death of Heath Ledger. Fortunately the trailer did not disappoint and the film became one of the most profitable ever. 8.) Twilight - To many this trailer came and went, but to that subset of the populace obsessed with the novels, Twilight was THE trailer to watch over and over and over . . . . 7.) Australia - The stunning visuals along with a shirtless Hugh Jackman and stunning Nicole Kidman made this trailer one to talk about around the water cooler. Unfortunately many found the feature lacking. 6.) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Pretty much a given. Either you're a fan or you're not, but you have to admit that the films keep getting better and better. Trailers included. 5.) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - The subject of the film eluded most until the first trailer showed us a diminutive old man that looked surprisingly like Brad Pitt and a gorgeous Cate Blanchett doing pirouettes in the moonlight. Sure enough this trailer did its job. 4.) Watchmen - When this trailer finally found its way onto the internet, ever geek went into ultra nerd mode and spent a good day dissecting the trailer to see that it matched the amazing graphic novel it is based on. The trailer has that great Smashing Pumpkins song playing and just enough is teased in front of our faces to make us buy our tickets to the first showing right now. 3.) He's Just Not That Into You - A huge ensemble cast for this flick but surprisingly the star power takes a back seat to the lesser-knowns in this cutesy rom-com trailer. 2.) X-Men Origins: Wolverine - After the horror that was X3, I was terrified by the thought of another X-Men movie being eviscerated by a faux-comic book loving screenwriter. But alas, the trailer looks accurate to the source material and the explosion of superheroes and villains just made me all giddy. 1.) Revolutionary Road - Utterly spellbinding, this trailer is its own magnificent short film. The combination of that haunting piano and the powerful Nina Simone rattle the viewer to the bone and make this trailer my best of 2008. So what trailers did you all like this past year?
I just saw the Revolutionary Road trailer over the weekend for the first time. Wow. it looks really intense. It does work as it's own short film is a lot of ways. Also, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince trailer freaked me out a bit. I can't believe that movie is for kids.
Body: Is the amateurs-making-porn genre here to stay? Perhaps as long as porn is around? Humpday reminds me of a few films I've seen over the last few years. The description makes me think I'll either sort of like it or really, really hate it. Either way, I'd like to see it. Nutshell pitch: two old college buddies who are prone to one-upsmanship dare one another to enter an amateur porn competition. They eventually decide their best chance to win is to have sex with one another. This isn't about being gay, they say; this is art. I'm interested in Humpday for a lot of reasons. For one thing, the writer/director (Lynn Shelton) is a woman, so I'm excited to see how she handles this story that seems to be primarily about men. The Sundance description ends, "her craft shines brightest when our two gentlemen finally get down to the task at hand: creating a classic 'wriggle in your seat' moment of truth." That reminds me of another film about amateur pornographers called Dear Pillow (2004), which was overflowing with such 'wriggle in your seat' moments. I liked Dear Pillow more than The Amateurs (2005), but The Amateurs had some merit too. Both films are interested in how creating pornography can affect the relationships of those involved. (I haven't seen Zack and Miri Make a Porno, but I've heard that theme's in there, too.) Dear Pillow went further than The Amateurs by looking at how merely consuming pornography can affect one's relationships. I'd love to hear from anyone who sees this movie at Sundance--is it just a re-tread of these older films? I doubt it. Another thing I don't know is whether all of these recent films are just retreading older amateurs-making-porn films. Have you guys seen older movies about pornographers?
Body: Liked these (in no particular order): Cloverfield Incredible theatrical experience. Might be hampered watching at home. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist Cutesy teen flick. Had a great 80's feel to it. Hamlet 2 Perverse and just plain hilarious throughout. Great original music. House Bunny I'm a sucker for Anna Faris and she plays a ditzy Playmate perfectly. The Dark Knight A comic geek's wet dream. My Winnipeg Immensely creative, original film. A flurry of emotions in a bizarre little package. WALL-E Heartbreakingly sentimental love story; action packed galactic adventure. Iron Man Another comic geek's wet dream. And Robert Downey Jr. Nuff said. The Fall Just insanely wondrous film. Deserves the comparisons to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Speed Racer Seizure inducing fanboy fun. Savage Grace Frightening 'Based on a True Story' film. Amazing performances. The Strangers Nothing new, but executed perfectly. Dark, abysmal terror. My Blueberry Nights Subtle, nuanced performances and beautiful direction. Packed with emotion. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day Carefree, fanciful period flick. Amy Adams and Frances McDormand are a perfect slapstick duo on screen. Jumper Big budget Sci-Fi blockbuster without all the annoying garnishes. Watching the Detectives Made for cinephiles about cinephiles. Hokey fun. Movies that might be on my list that I haven't seen yet: Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Spirit Doubt The Wrestler The Brothers Bloom Revolutionary Road Repo! The Genetic Opera Humboldt County Just Buried Milk Australia Rachel Getting Married W. Fear(s) of the Dark Synecdoche, New York Zack and Miri Make a Porno Towelhead Vicky Cristina Barcelona The Wackness Brideshead Revisited Glass: A Portrait in Twelve Parts
Body: On a post titled Melting Like a Snowcone in Phoenix, I said Zack and Miri Make a Porno was a 'disappointment', Josh Hall a.k.a Skiskua responded with:I loved it, actually. It was one of the cutest movies I've seen this year and in an odd way, I think it's about the value of loyalty in an oversexed world.Sorry, Josh, here's an unsatisfactory effort by Kevin Smith, he leaves his film needing more, it's lazily told. It had me laughing. Certainly. But it failed to arouse. In fact, instead of watching Zack and Miri Make their awkward Porno, I'd rather be back at home in Albany having a soapy tit wank. And here's why:Rather than illuminating the lives of the characters or impacting the plot, virtually all the supporting characters are underused. They're functional in gross-out sight gags but lack an agenda and a memorable screen personality. An appearance by Traci Lords was an opportunity to add a commentary on bad porn, something self-referential, something insightful, something sorely missed, she blows bubbles with a fanny fart but anybody could've done that.Zack and Miri do Make Jizz. And there's something genuinely beautiful about the moment. But where's the set up? Instead of gradually waning Zack's sexual confidence or building Miri's anxiety, Kevin Smith glosses over 'raising the stakes' with his incessant dialogue. Zack clumsily soothes Miri. And then, they make the Porno.Zack convincing Miri to Make the Porno is relatively easy, we're expected to buy her cheap I Will, in the same way we're expected to buy Katherine Heigl's falling in love with Seth Rogen in Knocked Up, both films are missing a scene where the female leads make a decision all by themselves. But look at Elizabeth Banks, go on, look at that face, she's a radiant screen presence, isn't she?NB: Ms. Banks, you're a radiant screen presence, that's a noble quality dear, never loose that. Because it often disappears with old age or entering politics.
