Body: I have a confession to make. I was not a fan of the first two Underworld movies. Or, more accurately, of what I saw of them. I rented both and turned both off because I found them quite dull, despite the fact that I did not find their star, Kate Beckinsale, to be dull at all. So why did I even bother with the third film? There wasn’t much else playing and I wanted to see a movie, and I have a very strong weakness for vampire films, good, bad and ugly. Despite the star rating, I’m not sure that I can classify Underworld: Rise of the Lycans as a “good” movie, but I can say that I enjoyed far more the other two (of what I saw anyway). I can’t complain about the money, I spent on it, either, as it delivers exactly what you would expect from a movie with its title. The first two pictures are not required viewing as it’s a prequel, so I didn’t feel that I walked in on the third installment of something. This is not to say that everything makes sense, because nothing makes sense in these movies. Set in the Middle Ages, the story revolves the revolt of werewolves (the Lycans) who enslaved by vampires. What the movie never explains is why the vampires would need to enslave anyone. What kind of resources do they need? They don’t need to eat, and since they are all strong, they should be able to do all the work they need themselves. Are they just lazy? If so, what do they do all night? Anyway, one Lycan named Lucian (Michael Sheen) gets special treatment and falls in love with the vampire Sonja (Rhoma Mitra, in a strange coincidence bares a striking resemblance to Kate Backinsale). This creates problems as later starts to feel bad for the other werewolves, and he eventually escapes and ends up leading the other werewolves to revolt (hence the title). Among all this action, there is the love story between Sonja and Lucian, which is not boring but not moving at all. I don’t know how moved I could be by a werewolf\vampire romance, but I did wonder what there children would be like. The movie is a success in the sense that the characters look cool (despite the fact the film has a strange digial grade), is not boring, and does not waste its story time. It doesn’t go on and on like the first films, nor does it have any gun fights. I mean, if vampires and werewolves were to have a war, would they fight it with GUNS? I didn’t care about the characters or the plot, and found no deep message or human observation, but I can say that I was entertained, which is something that a whole lot of more ambitious movies fail to do. I can’t even say if fans of the first two pictures will like it, but I can say that it passed the test as a dumb, fun movie to see on Saturday night. Believe it or not, that is a virtue in of itself. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans(2009)
Body: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is just very average. I've actually already forgotten most of it. The story was told in the first Underworld movie and so there are no real surprises. Michael Sheen ("Frost/Nixon") reprises his role as the werewolf Lucian and Bill Nighy ("Valkyrie") is back as head vamp, Viktor. The action is okay. The effects are okay. It's just all okay. Sadly, until just a few days ago, I had never seen Pretty in Pink. But I caught up with it and loved it. Written by John Hughes ("Just Visiting") it features many of his 80s teen trademarks: Molly Ringwald ("Not Another Teen Movie"), the clash between rich and poor, and lots of angst. John Cryer ("Two and Half Men") does an excellent lip sync. This movie really is awesome. From director Danny Boyle ("Sunshine"), Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a poor boy from Mumbai who is accused of cheating on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." As the police interrogate him, the film flashes back through his life to show the reasons he knows the answers to the questions. A love story hides amongst the tragedy and a lively soundtrack really makes the film pop. Definitely check this out. Unfortunately named though it may be, The Dark is really a tense little horror/thriller. Maria Bello ("The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor") brings her daughter, Sarah, to Wales to visit husband Sean Bean ("Far North"). On the creepy seaside, Sarah appears to drown, but while her parents search for her, another girl appears claiming to have returned from the dead to take Sarah's place. Very creepy and atmospheric, but not frightening. I got quite caught up in it. Another 80's classic with which I finally caught up, Working Girl puts Melanie Griffith ("Have Mercy") in the dog-eat-dog corporate world as a secretary determined to rise to the top. When her bitchy boss, a nice turn by Sigourney Weaver ("The Tale of Despereaux") steals her idea, Griffith fights back by pretending to have her boss' job. Then she falls for Harrison Ford ("Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull") and then things go awry. Sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately inspiring, this is a really good watch.
Body: 1. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans -- Watch the trailer. In the much-awaited sequel Underwear: Rise of the Lycra, we learn that a wicked wedgie has taken the life of Kate Beckinsale. Replacing Beckinsale is Rhona Mitra, one of the toughest chicks I've ever seen in film. (Fans of post-apocalyptic horror should check out Neil Marshal's Doomsday. Watch the trailer.) Fleshing out the cast are Martin Sheen and the excellent Bill Nighy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Valkyrie). Nighy gave a hint about his role at the Comic-Con preview: "I’m a vampire, I’m a zombie, and I’m a squid. How many people do you know who can make that claim?" I don't know, but I've eaten those three kinds of meat at one sitting. How many can make that claim? Rise of the Lycra was preceded by Underwear: Elle Macpherson (watch trailer) and the original Underwear (watch trailer). Now, onto the next movie: 2. Inkheart -- Watch the trailer. Hey, speaking of Brendan Fraser, recast Encino Man to win a t-shirt. 3. Killshot -- Watch the trailer. What's more mysterious: when untalented people make a good film, or when talented people make a bad film? Since Killshot's release was bumped five times and was almost a direct-to-DVD release, it seems producer Harvey Weinstein just wants the film to go away. Read more. Still, there might be some potential here since it came from an Elmore Leonard novel. 4. Outlander (limited release) -- Watch the trailer. Wow, Vikings vs. aliens! I want this to be good, but since it's another film that Harvey Weinstein wanted to disappear, it's probably not. And darn it, why do they have to show the monster in the trailer? Outlander looks about as good as Pathfinder (2007), which was Vikings vs. Native Americans, or The 13th Warrior, which was Vikings vs. a Middle Eastern scholar. What kind of Viking match-ups would you like to see? How about Vikings vs. Predator? P.S., I really dug that Vikings vs. Tomb Raider movie, Beowulf (2006).
